There is no question that organic is more expensive than non-organic but the question on everyone's lips is why is it so and should be "biting the bullet" and going organic for our health?  Well we dive into it all We go into the fundamental reasons why organic is more expensive What some of our listeners choose and why We explore the "nasty chemical" that is glyphosate (spoiler alert it's not as nasty as you think) and give you the information you need including the acceptable daily intake We look at pesticides, in general, seeing what the current evidence says which also leads us to look at claims such as "pesticides cause autism" We discuss the media and its apparent biased in this conversation - essentially spreading fear and according to one meta-analysis could be causing certain low-income households to not buy certain foods as unable to afford the organic variety We also briefly touch on if organic is better for the environment - the conclusion may surprise you! John Canlas (@johncanlasrd) is a registered dietician living and working in the Bay Area in California. In addition to his private practice working one on one with clients on their nutrition, he also works as a dietician for a prison in California. Who knew prisons had dieticians? Not me that's for sure. But, some of them do. Essentially to ensure they are eating a balanced diet and have access to the food they need to keep healthy. John plays this role, and we discussed it at length in this podcast. In addition to ensuring the prisoners are well fed, John also runs a private practice where he sees patients to help them with their diet. As a registered dietician John in qualified to advise patients on dietary interventions for medical purposes, such as patients who have diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease. This of course requires a much more in depth understanding of nutrition and physiology than some giving generic lifestyle/diet advice. John also gave an interesting perspective on the organic vs non-organic food debate. It's more complex that simply what is "healthier" and labels simply do not tell us everything. In this week's podcast, we discuss the difference between organic and non-organic foods. Are organic foods healthier and contain more nutrition compared to their non-organic counterparts? No. Organic food production doesn't effect the nutritional quality of the food you buy. The organic label tells you more about how the food you are buying was cultivated. Organic farms must take into account the soil quality before and after harvest. This is the biggest difference between these two farming practices. Non-organic farms don't have to worry about soil quality or the integrity of the ecosystem in which they cultivate their crops. They can simply focus on increasing the yield no matter the cost to the surrounding environment.  This lack of concern for the quality of our soil and the heavy reliance on artificial oil derived fertilizers, is the biggest concern with non-organic farming. This is the reason you should buy organic if you have the means to afford it.  You won't get more nutrition from the organic foods, but you will be contributing to the health of our planet by buying organic and that's the primary reason why you should. Kendall Metz raises chickens in Delaware as her supervised agricultural experience.  She has been innovative and has done some experimentation while she was doing this.  She started out raising chickens traditionally but then changed to raising them organically.  After realizing that things worked better as a non-organic producer she went back to her first method.  Because she was making all the decisions she was able to make this transition very quickly. Kendall's quick thinking and agility as an entrepreneur is what led her to be the winner of the Star In Agribusiness both in Delaware and in the Eastern Region FFA.  It also led her to a silver award at the national level. Kendall is also a leader, serving as the chapter president at Caesar Rodney High School.  She plans on majoring in agricultural education and bringing her quick thinking and leadership back to the classroom. This process released a byproduct of heat, which is where this concern might have come from. What science has been able to demonstrate is that in fact the opposite is true. Medical research suggests the saying should instead be “feed a cold, feed a fever.” When we are unwell with fever or a cold, it requires additional energy to fight the infection. This means our body requires an increase in energy and nutrients to produce the immune cells required to fight the infection. These immune cells, immunoglobulins for e.g. are made up of proteinOther micronutrients, including Zn, selenium, Fe, copper, vits A, C, E, B6 and folate, glutathione (cruciferous veg), bioflavanoids (citrus fruits) are all involved in immune processes and its important to have enough of these through eating a variety of whole foods. Colds and flus are caused by viruses Intermittent fasting may enhance immune function, but not so useful once you’re already sickStarving a fever is of no benefit and may even delay your recovery Drink plenty of fluids, rest if you need to, hearty soups such as minestrone, chicken and veg, can help provide nutrients and liquids - killing 2 birds with 1 stone. And the heat can help loosen mucous. Listen to your body - eat when you’re hungry but also rest when you need to. Some benefit in zinc , olive leaf extract at the first sign of a cold to reduce the severity and durationUpgrade your health - swap your riceRice itself doesn’t offer much more than carbohydrates and calories so if you have an opportunity to swap it out for something that adds more value we’d encourage you to do so. You could swap rice for a grain such as quinoa, barley or freekeh for significantly more protein and fibre; a legume like chickpeas or lentils, or get right amongst it and try some cauliflower rice. If it’s the curry you’re really after then you’re unlikely to miss it. And if you just want rice, absolutely use it, keep your serves to the size of your fist. And select basmati rice, wild rice or a rice and quinoa blend to get the glycaemic response down. Organic versus non organic produceStudies on the foods themselves in terms of nutritional content, levels of chemicals and resistant bacteriaStudies on the health of humans long term When we look at organic vs non-organic there may be slightly higher concentrations of antioxidants in organic produce. This is only in general, as organic milk has been found to have lower mineral content, and varies depending on the source. When we look at chemicals and pesticide residues, organic produce may reduce exposure to these but important to note that the levels of toxins in non-organic produce is generally well below safe limitsWhen we look at health overall, in particular long term health of individuals that eat organic vs non organic produce, the benefits are far less clear. No difference in cancer risk (studies of >600,000 women)Huge systematic reviews show no differenceSome studies that report a difference need to be careful of other confounding factors. If we think about the profile of someone who may eat organic - they have chosen to and have the means to do so. In general,this often means they are more likely to be of a higher SES/income, better living environments, higher education level, health conscious therefore choose more fresh produce overall, get regular health check ups and screen for chronic diseases. It’s really difficult to attribute health benefits to the organic produce when there’s a whole bunch of other health-promoting behaviours, environmental and lifestyle factors contributing. Bottom line: if you’ve got the means and it’s a priority for you - by all means! If you don’t - just keep aiming for your 5 serves of veggies and wash them well.
