Welcome to MANN WEEK!!!Based upon the hit '80's TV show of the same name co-created by Oscar-nominated writer/director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans), Mann brought this adaptation to the big screen twenty years ago this summer.  The story once again focuses on two partnering Miami police detectives named Sonny Crockett (Oscar-nominated Colin Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx) - they are going undercover to take down a Latin American drug cartel and the similarities to the original show pretty much end there.  Among their targets are Jose Yero (John Ortiz), Montoya (Luis Tosar), and Isabella (Gong Li) as they partner with the FBI to stop a major shipment of drugs.  However Sonny then starts a romance with Isabella....and complications ensue!  Considered a disappointment by both audiences and critics upon initial release, this has since gone on to develop a cult following....especially resulting from a better reception to the eventual "Director's Cut" which was released on DVD.  THAT version will be reviewed in this episode.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

True Crimes Against Wine

Hey friend — if you're planning a pool day and want to bring something better than boxed rosé (but still chill and easy), this episode's for you. We're big fans of low-drama, high-fun batched drinks: think margaritas and mojitos as the MVPs. They're simple to scale, super tweakable, and they won't leave you with a sad, flat, sugary mess after a few hours in the sun. Quick PSA: don't bring Long Island iced tea to the heat. Also, please don't do blue motherfuckers. Learned that the hard way — way too much alcohol with way too much artificial sugar and a color that makes you question life choices. If you're making something for a group, pick something that stays pleasant in a pitcher. Real talk on batched cocktails: start simple. Margaritas are the perfect base — tequila, lime, and a touch of agave. Mojitos are great too, just keep the soda separate so it stays fizzy when you serve. For fruit-forward sweetness, use ripe fruit (watermelon, strawberries, peaches) and muddle it in the pitcher for natural flavor instead of dumping in extra sugar. Sugar + sun = rough morning, so let the fruit do the work. Want to get fancy? Try spicy margaritas with jalapeño, or play with citrus like blood orange or a lemon-lime-orange blend. If you want bubbles, batch the base and top each poured drink with Prosecco or soda — don't pre-mix the fizz. Also, remember large-batch ratios sometimes need a little tweaking from your single-drink recipe, so taste and adjust before you serve. Another favorite hack: make a few different lemonades (spicy watermelon lemonade, triple-citrus lemonade, ginger-peach lemonade) and let folks pick their liquor — rum, vodka, tequila, gin — so people can control strength and sweetness. It's great for guests who don't drink much; they still get a delicious refresher without the buzz. Bottom line: keep it fresh, keep it simple, and don't over-sweeten. If you try one of these batched ideas (or invent your own twist), tell us how it went — we love hearing your variations. Hit us up at truecrimesagainstwine@gmail.com or on Instagram. We'll send you some swag if it's cute enough. Cheers and enjoy the pool!

How does it feel competing against the world's best bartenders making six cocktails in six minutes in front of a large audience? How can bartending become a form of storytelling instead of simply making drinks? How did the Mojito begin as a 16th-century medical remedy? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Kaitlyn Stewart, the first Canadian to win the prestigious title of World Class Bartender of the Year and author of the book, Three Cheers: Cocktails Three Ways: Classics, Riffs, and Zero-Proof Sips. How did a mentor show Kaitlyn that bartending could combine storytelling, creativity, and performance? What was it like competing to make six cocktails in six minutes inside a Mexican wrestling ring? How did Kaitlyn become the first Canadian to win World Class Bartender of the Year? Why does Kaitlyn believe the world's greatest cocktails have stood the test of time? Why did Kaitlyn design her cocktail book with classic, modern, and alcohol-free versions of every drink? How does the Manhattan cocktail secretly contain New York City's 212 area code? Which classic cocktail has the strangest origin story? How did the Mojito begin as a medical remedy more than 400 years ago? What inspired the invention of the now-famous Espresso Martini?   About Kaitlyn Stewart Kaitlyn Stewart is an internationally recognized, global bartending champion with over 20 years of hospitality experience. Miami Vice should have been a slam dunk. Michael Mann adapting his own iconic television series with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles sounds like a guaranteed hit. Instead, audiences got a moody, digitally-shot crime film that cared far more about atmosphere, professionalism, and vibe than plot or nostalgia. But over the years, the movie has developed a passionate following. The Bookshop Detectives, Murder and Mojitos by Gareth Ward and Louise Ward. Two real life booksellers from Hawkes Bay have created a fictional bookshop named Sherlock Tomes which in this, the 3rd in the series, is cosy crime full of literary mayhem. Sherlock Tomes are invited to work with a visiting writer from Cuba who's coming to Hawkes Bay for the Art Deco Festival, given the shared architecture style of the two countries, and the bookshop has the opportunity to run a literary event while she's in town – which of course goes terribly awry.. This is warm, witty and highly amusing. The Kingpin by A.A.Dhand. A pharmacist in the city of Leeds is drawn into the underworld through both the temptations of his brother, newly released from prison, and a local cop with a terminal illness who now has nothing to lose. Idris Khan is the pharmacist in question – his dispensary is on the edge of a large housing estate where he supplies methadone to local addicts and he lives in a hard, morally grey world. This is really gritty inner city crime, made more interesting by the pharmacist's understanding of medicines and how to use them for very specific results. Welcome back to our January rerun series! For today's spotlight, I'm thrilled to revisit Episode 17, where we dive into the elegant and effervescent French 75. One of my ALL time favorites and my go to welcome cocktail to serve when hosting parties.  I chose the French 75 for this rerun because it's a brilliant riff on the classic Sour cocktail—that timeless combination of spirit, citrus, and sweetener. What makes the French 75 stand out, though, is its use of sparkling wine as a mixer or lengthener. The addition of bubbles transforms the structure of the drink, making it light, festive, and perfect for celebrations or any time you want to elevate your cocktail experience.  By mastering the French 75, you're stepping into the world of the Collins family of drinks. The Collins family is all about taking the basic sour template and “lengthening” it with something fizzy—traditionally club soda, but as the French 75 shows, sparkling wine is a fantastic twist. Other drinks in this family include the Tom Collins, John Collins, and Vodka Collins—each swapping out the base spirit or bubbly for different flavors and personalities.  And while we're here, it's worth tipping our hat to the Mojito. Though technically not a Collins, the Mojito follows a remarkably similar template: spirit (rum), citrus (lime), sweetener (sugar), and a bubbly lengthener (soda), plus the refreshing addition of mint. It's a great example of how understanding the Collins structure empowers you to spot and create variations across cocktail families—even when they hail from different traditions or use different techniques.  As you listen (or re-listen) to Episode 17, think about how the French 75 not only showcases the versatility of the sour formula, but also invites you to play with sparkling ingredients in your cocktails. Once you get comfortable with this style, a whole world of bubbly, refreshing drinks is yours to explore.  Cheers to new adventures in the Collins family, and to a sparkling start to the new year!
