A Short Stay in Hell is about a religious man who dies and discovers that the afterlife he believed in during his life on Earth is not exactly what he expected. He gets cast into a version of hell based on Borges's Library of Babel where he (and others in his same situation) are tasked with finding the story of their life in order to go onto a version of heaven. It is a task none of them understand at first, but they (and us as the readers) get a little taste of what 'infinite' actually means. Existential, haunting, beautiful, thought-provoking - this novella packs quite a punch. Spoilers begin in minute 33.

One of the most dishonest and unethical things that politicians commonly do in this country is to find a way to increase taxes on specific sections of the Australian population - but present it to the public as a measure to improve life for ordinary people. We're seeing this currently with attitudes to citizens who seek to establish a business by letting a property they own to tourists and other short-term visitors to the area. These kinds of properties typically use systems like Airbnb or Stayz and they're popular with travellers who prefer to stay in a house or an apartment rather than a motel or a hotel room. And of course they're perfectly legal and a reasonable thing for property owners to do to create a sustainable business. But local authorities have seized on this as another way to raise revenue.

At Viviant Healthcare of Murfreesboro, located in rural TN, 25% of residents are short stay. When they leave, Lisa Lugo, Director of Social Services, worries. Lacking transportation makes it hard for many to fill prescriptions. Some in need of pain medications can't get an appointment with a pain clinic for days. Others return home and don't follow up with their healthcare providers. Without support, residents may experience health mishaps that land them back in the hospital. To avoid these complications, Lugo opted to take part in a pilot program for Continue Care, a suite of services from PharMerica designed to help keep patients healthy at home. It worked: the rehospitalization rate for Viviant during the pilot was 10%, a significant improvement over the average rate among SNFs of 23%-31%. And residents weren't the only ones who benefitted. By eliminating manual processes and calls or faxes to the pharmacy to get prescriptions filled, Continue Care saves a lot of staff time and frustration and frees caregivers up to spend more time with residents. Plus, with a three on/three off schedule, there's no risk of orders falling through the cracks between shifts. Hear firsthand from Lugo when she joins hosts John O'Connor and TJ Griffin along with PharMerica's Bill Deane, whose team operationalized the program, to discuss her facility's previous processes that prompted her to adopt Continue Care and the positive impacts it has had on outcomes and her team alike.

Will investing for Airbnb deliver a bigger and better profit for you? On this episode I'm talking all things short stay accommodation. The intangibles, the secrets, the hidden profits as well of the obvious ones. Winning at short stay is not about buying a property and sticking it on airbnb. Success is far more nuanced than that, but also relies on the same approach we take with investing in other markets. There's no doubt that short stay is becoming more and more of a property investors delight. With potential for quick turnarounds and providing a personal holiday experience what's not to like? To give a little background on today's episode, we recently read the book A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck, who is a professor of biology and bioethics at BYU and an award-winning fiction author. The book is a remarkable and frankly terrifying exploration of a concept of “hell” that calls into question the very natures of eternity, meaning, and relationship. As we talked with each other about this book, we realized that exploring the Latter-day Saint concept of “hell” in relationship to other hell theologies would be fascinating. But more importantly, as Steve's book indicated, it would provide an opportunity for us to dive deep on what we mean when we say eternity, and what our unique faith tradition has to teach us and share with the world about the nature of an endlessly loving God, life after death, and human potential. So we asked Steve to join us to talk a bit about his book, and brought in Terryl Givens as an additional conversation partner to round out some of these concepts, especially in light of Christian and Latter-day Saint tradition. And yes, if you're wondering, we thought that Halloween was the perfect day to release this episode ;)

Steven Peck reviews Mormonism and Science. He speaks about truth and discovery and how God interacts with us. He discusses how a God of the Gaps will fail us. Then he speaks about his book A Short Stay in Hell. The book pesents an amazing thought experiment. Steven addresses time and space within an eternal perspective and how these ideas came together in this story.
