Die Songs: Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the U.K. Ramones - I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement Procul Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale Johnny Thunders - Born To Lose The Blues Brothers - Theme From Rawhide Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen Band Of Bollocks - Gott Schütze Wien PiL - Public Image Paul Anka - My Way Sid Vicious - My Way Ramones - Love Kills Phoebe Bridgers - Chelsea The Velvet Underground - Heroin

Quite possibly one of the most recognizable names ever, Alex Cox joins me to talk about his iconic career, spanning over four decades. After realizing being an actor wasn't in the cards, Alex decided to move to production (which was unpopular at the time) and has been making beautiful films since. "Repo Man," "Sid and Nancy," and "Straight to Hell," are just some of his iconic masterpieces. We talk about his early life, inspirations and his latest (as of the recording) movie “Tombstone Rashomon,” which is a retelling of the famous gunfight at the OK Corral, but from everyone's perspective. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Facebook and Instagram. I do a lot of appreciation posts, free giveaways and more!

The whole world was watching when punk rock star Sid Vicious began a relationship with one of his groupies: Nancy Spungen. When Nancy was found dead, all eyes were on Sid. But this infamous case has never been solved, it remains a total mystery. Trigger Warning: abortions, self harm, suicide attempts, drug abuse and overdosing, mental health issues including schizophrenia, abusive relationships Resources: https://linktr.ee/usualdisclaimer
We begin the 9th Annual Month Of Bev by chatting about a cult classic that features punks, Reaganomics and odd automobiles. Repo Man was Alex Cox's debut (Sid And Nancy came 2 years later) and it was also very early in Emilio Estevez's film career. The man who would basically stop acting in motion pictures about 15 years later is just okay here. He's joined in this sci-fi/comedy by veteran character actors like Tracey Walter and Harry Dean Stanton. The movie still touches Bev's Gen-X heart, despite a clunky middle section and an unsatisfying ending. This is a weird flick, but you have to admire that everyone involved embraces the weirdness. Well, maybe not Stanton. So drive your Chevy Malibu across the country---no matter what danger the trunk contains---and follow the code as our 560th pieces through Repo Man. To Be Clear...: Gary Oldman's co-star in Sid & Nancy is Chloe Webb (playing Nancy Spungen). Also, Sy Richardson WAS indeed one of the writers of Mario Van Peebles' Posse. Since repo men spend so much of of their day waiting in cars, they could use Sparkplug Coffee. You can snag some of that with a onetime 20% discount. Young love can be a pretty magical thing. But it usually doesnt end well. In the end, someone always gets hurt. No where is this exemplified better than the short lived relationship between Sex Pistols Bassist Sid Viscious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. As we know, this infamous relationship ended with Nancy lying on the floor of the Chelsea Hotel with a knife sticking out of her stomach. A few months later Sid himself would also be dead of a drug overdose. This week we take a look at both the life of Sid and Nancy, as well as their untimely endings. This isnt a romantic story (contrary to popular belief), or a sexy one, Sid Viscious was not a good dude, and Nancy was an insanely troubled person. That being said, it is one hell of a story.Oh ... also, dont do heroin.

Never mind the Bollocks, it's Someone's Favorite Movie with another cringe punny way to introduce the show notes for episode 66 of this esteemed program. In this episode, it's the doomed romance of Sid Vicious (from the Sex Pistols) and Nancy Spungen in Alex Cox's sensationalized biopic. This is the second Alex Cox film that we have covered. A look back at esteemed film critic and director Alex Cox's most famous hour (after Repo Man perhaps) reveals a first half so camply wild and cartoonish it could be from Baz Luhrmann himself. A second half that leaves the Sex Pistols behind and focuses on punk's own Romeo and Juliet, is a more thoughtful, sad and tragic affair - that goes a long way to humanising a potentially obnoxious couple. Both an early Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb are outstanding in the titular roles. The cinematography of a mid eighties New York hellscape was so good I looked up who did it and was fairly shocked to find the one and only Roger Deakins!
Kyle Gallner and Emily Skeggs talk about their movie "Dinner in America" about a a repressed suburban Michigan girl and the punk rocker who injects some needed chaos in her life. Plus how an alleged insurrectionist relates to a Lizzo lyric and in the Antwentig, a dispute over a barren rock is offered up as a lesson for us all, but especially Vladamir Putin. Sid. Nance. Cox. Others. I kept most of the talk focused on what happened with the Sex Pistols during the Sid Vicious era and what happened to Sid and Nancy after the breakup of the band. Lots of different perspectives on what went down at The Chelsea Hotel. Not a load of background on the making of the film this time, you can buy the Criterion edition for that. I just decided to react in real time to what was taking place on screen. I go from a few righteous exclamations of, "Good one, Sid!" to exasperated to repulsed to tearful, while dovetailing back to the history of the people involved. Sex Pistols bassist, Sid Vicious, woke up from a narcotic haze in his Chelsea Hotel room, on the morning of October 12, 1978. He discovered his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, laying lifeless in a pool of her own blood. She had been stabbed in the abdomen and bled to death. Immediately, Sid blamed himself.. Police found him in the hotel hallway muttering "I Killed Nancy". Sid admitted to killing Nancy, but recanted his story. Rather than the NYPD investigating the murder, they were set on Vicious. In February 1979, after being released on bail, Sid Vicious died of a deadly heroin overdose. The death of Sid closed the case on Nancy's murder........But did he do it?...........

PUBLIC VERSION. Sid and Nancy depicts the bass player from the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, and his self-destructing relationship with his girlfriend Nancy. It's a weirdly simple name for a movie. This movie is hard to watch. It's two people with not a care in the world drink and drug themselves to death. But it does spark […]

Stewart talks about the the rise and fall of T. Rex frontman, Marc Bolan. He dives briefly into Bolan's upbringing and super nova career culminating in some mind boggling coincidences regarding his lyrics, his interviews, and general attitude with relation to his tragic and premature death. Emily then delves into the horrifying details surrounding Sid and Nancy's short and tragic lives and breaks down the still relatively unsolved murder of Nancy Spungen.
After a brief catchup on late 2018 trips to Colorado, James and Marisa discuss the druggy Shakespearean drama that is Sid & Nancy. They also breakdown punk history, codependency, and Gary Oldman.
It’s 1986 America. Movies doing the rounds are “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (movie vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg, “An American Tail” and Alex Cox’s bio of “Sid And Nancy”. The Centennial celebrations of the Statue of Liberty are underway in New York, and Mike Tyson beats Trevor Berbick in his first professional World Title win.Music wise here, we have Steve Winwood, The Pretenders, The Bangles and some Cameo on the way. The fight for the top is with Madonna, Bon Jovi, Boston and Human League. More great songs of the era “True Colors”, “Hip To Be Square” and “Shake You Down” do you remember who sang them? Enjoy!

In this episode we make another trip through the annals of time back to that trippy establishment The Chelsea Hotel. Lynn gives you a brief run down of the history of this iconic landmark first and then brings us the tale of Jobriath. Who is Jobriath, you might ask, well she will tell you all about this amazing gay musical visionary. Come hear about the giant light up Penis that almost made it to the Paris Opera stage. Then a very pneumonia stricken Regina tells us the tale of Sid and Nancy. Nancy Spungen met her end in room 100 at the good ol' Chelsea, and up until recently common belief is that Sid Vicious was the murderer. But was he really? We didn't understand Stephen Hawking in A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, and we don't understand love in real life. But we do understand romance in biopics, which is what the new film about Hawking attempts to do in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. This inspires a look back at other great romances of our time (or at least the altered film versions) in SID AND NANCY & A BEAUTIFUL MIND.
