Ep. 195 - From 5-Month Injury to National Title & State Record: The Story of Mia Sirois

The Sunday Shakeout

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2026 54:31

In 2026, Barrington High School's Mia Sirois cemented herself as one of the premier distance runners in the nation. The Illinois standout opened her year by winning the indoor national title in the 5,000 meters before carrying that momentum into the outdoor season. Already known as one of the country's top young talents, she continued to raise the standard with every race.At the IHSA State Championships, Sirois defended her Class 3A title in the 3200 meters, running 9:44 and setting a new Illinois state meet record. She also added another state title to her resume, further solidifying her place among the most accomplished runners in state history. Her success didn't stop there. Just weeks later, she lined up against some of the nation's best at Brooks PR and finished second in the 3200 meters. With personal bests of 4:46 for 1600 meters, 9:44 for 3200 meters, and 15:58 for 5K, Sirois has established herself as one of the top distance runners in the Class of 2027.But behind the records and championships is a story of resilience.Last summer, a trail running accident resulted in a fractured ankle and heel, sidelining her from consistent running for nearly five months. The setback forced her to step away from the sport she loved and challenged her perspective in ways success never could. In this conversation, we dive into the race that changed her confidence forever: a sixth-place finish at Nike Cross Nationals during her sophomore season. We discuss the pressure of becoming the athlete everyone is chasing, what injury taught her about gratitude, and how losing running helped her appreciate the sport more than ever before. As she prepares for U20 Championships and New Balance Nationals, Sirois continues to chase new goals while holding tightly to the perspective that has shaped her journey.Tap into the Mia Sirois Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following The Sunday Shakeout on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review. I would also appreciate it if you shared this episode with a friend, teammate, or runner who could benefit from Mia's story.

Which John Cooper-Era Buckeye Would Guarantee a Title for Ohio State? | Buckeye Weekly PodcastOn the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr kick off a series revisiting past Ohio State eras by debating which John Cooper-era players they'd add to the current Buckeyes to best ensure a national championship. Both agree Orlando Pace is the obvious top choice and discuss where he'd play on today's offensive line, calling him possibly the best Ohio State player they've ever seen. They then consider other additions, including David Boston alongside Jeremiah Smith and other receivers, plus options like Terry Glenn and Joey Galloway. On defense they highlight Dan “Big Daddy” Wilkinson and discuss adding Antoine Winfield, along with mentions of Shawn Springs and Andy Katzenmoyer. They also float Eddie George at running back, Ricky Dudley at tight end, a return of a fullback, and Mike Vrabel at defensive end, then invite viewer suggestions and promote their YouTube channel and buckeyeinsiders.com.00:00 Welcome and Setup00:52 Orlando Pace No Brainer03:23 Adding David Boston04:58 Glenn or Galloway Debate06:40 Big Daddy in the Middle08:25 Eddie George Power Back09:30 Winfield and Secondary Upgrades11:21 Fullback and Dudley Ideas12:56 Vrabel and Katzenmoyer Fit14:25 Wrap Up and Subscribe

What OSU Needs to Win the National Title: O-Line, Julian Sayin, Run Game & Defense | Buckeye WeeklyOn the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr discuss results from Tony's Twitter poll asking fans to finish, “Ohio State will win a national championship this year if ___.” The most common response was improved offensive line play (about 55–60%), driven by late-season issues like pass protection and lack of a running game. They also highlight Julian Sayin's ability to make plays, process quickly, and add situational mobility, plus a better running game through broken tackles and incremental improvements from young backs. Defense was a smaller share of answers (about 10–15%), with the view that it only needs to remain close to last year's historically strong standard under Matt Patricia. They also touch on Ryan Day, play-calling, and the addition of Arthur Smith to help address offensive consistency.00:00 Stormy Show Opener00:45 Championship If Question01:56 Offensive Line Top Concern04:01 Julian Sayin Mobility06:33 Running Game Breakthroughs11:21 Defense Expectations15:20 Ryan Day and Arthur Smith19:58 Wrap Up and Subscribe

College football spring practice 2026 has reshaped the national title conversation, but the central question remains: how many teams can actually win it all? On this episode of Hit The Books, Joey Knish and Brad Powers break down the biggest contenders in college football, including Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, and others across the national landscape. The debate centers on whether college football is truly more open at the top or still defined by a small group of elite programs capable of winning a national championship. Joey Knish argues there are now roughly twelve to thirteen teams with a realistic path to a title, pointing to increased parity across the sport and the expanded College Football Playoff creating more legitimate contenders. Brad Powers disagrees, arguing the true number is closer to seven teams that can realistically win multiple high-level playoff games and actually get through the full postseason gauntlet. The conversation also covers spring takeaways from major programs across the Big Ten, SEC, and ACC, including where teams like LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Miami, Texas Tech, BYU, and Louisville fit into the national title picture. The guys also discuss how quarterback play, roster strength, and schedule difficulty separate true contenders from playoff participants. Ultimately, the question is whether the top of college football is expanding into a deeper championship field or whether only a small elite tier truly has a path to winning it all.
