On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we're diving deep into a chat inspired by two tribute albums to an incredibly influential musician, Sun Ra. Joining us are Meshell Ndegeocello and David Harrington. And oh man, do I have my work cut out for me in trying to introduce these incredible people and their careers—I won't even scratch the surface. Meshell Ndegeocello's biggest foray into the public consciousness, strangely enough, came on a duet with John Mellencamp in the mid-'90s, but that's not at all indicative of her wide-ranging career, which also includes everything from go-go music to neo-soul to jazz to rapping on a Madonna song. These days, the Grammys had to create an entirely new category for what she does: She just won the first-ever Grammy award for Alternative Jazz for last year's The Omnichord Real Book. It's no surprise given her musical serachings that Ndegeocello is also deeply inspired by Sun Ra, the legendary out-there jazz composer and performer who traveled through time and space until leaving our planet in 1993. His legacy lives on, though, and Ndegeocello recently released Red Hot & Ra: The Magic City, which features new compositions, old sounds, and a fresh look not just at Ra's work but his musical spirit. It's hard to explain, but check out “Bedlam Blues” from The Magic City right here. Today's other guest is David Harrington, founding member of Kronos Quartet, which has been expanding the music world for 50 years. I'd be a fool to try and sum up everything they've done and everyone with whom they've performed over the years, but do yourself a favor and Google them if you're not familiar. I'll just say that Kronos has pushed the envelope from just about every conceivable angle and expanded the scope and understanding of classical music, pop music, experimental music and much more. They've done film scores that you've definitely heard and deep dives into fringe classical compositions that you almost certainly haven't. So it's no wonder that they, too, like Ndegeocello, have found the wonder and mystery in Sun Ra's music, and that they've put together their own tribute in the Red Hot and Ra series. Theirs is called Outer Spaceways Incorporated: Kronos Quartet and Friends Meet Sun Ra. The friends on their volume of the series include Laurie Anderson, Marshall Allen, Laraaji, Moor Mother, Terry Riley, and more. Check out “Outer Spaceways Incorporated,” which features Georgia Anne Muldrow, right here. I should mention too that both of these albums are being released by the Red Hot organization, which has been raising money and awareness for good causes—initially AIDS research, and now that and more—since 1989. The Red Hot and Ra series is just the latest in a long line of albums that push musical boundaries while also serving humanity, so kudos to them—and to former Talkhouse host Elia Einhorn, who's been working with the Red Hot folks on these Sun Ra tributes. In this great conversation, Harrington and Ndegeocello talk, naturally, about Sun Ra, and they get granular with it, touching on MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech and its relationship to this music. They also chat about bringing more women into composition—a Kronos mandate since the beginning—as well as how finding Sun Ra changed Ndegeocello's musical path completely. Harrington also shares a great story about rehearsing with Ornette Coleman. Bonus! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Meshell Ndegeocello and David Harrington for chatting. Meshell Ndegeocello has been a working musician since she was a teenager. She's probably best known for her biggest hit to date, “Wild Night,” a Van Morrison cover she recorded with John Mellancamp back in 1994. Meshell is 55 now and just put out her 11th solo album, “The Omnichord Real Book,” her first in five years. The album started as a kind of personal pandemic project before she decided to share it with the world, and it's now been nominated for a Best Alternative Jazz Album Grammy award. When Anna spoke with Meshell, she was just back from a quick European tour, and they talked about what it was like for her to grow up in the 70s and 80s in the Washington D.C. area, surrounded by music, and how she found the bass, her main instrument, by chance (and with a little help from Prince.) In this episode, Meshell shares how her life with music has evolved through the years, what she's learned to let go of – as a performer, as a mother and a daughter – and how the ‘musical transmissions' that she receives help her stay grounded and present to who she really is, moment to moment.

In this episode, Soho Radio NYC's George Burton is joined by award-winning bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello. This is a snippet of their wonderful conversation - with music clips shortened right rights reasons - and we can't recommend enough the full-length show available on our mixcloud. Ndegeocello's artistic genius has been long documented. So has her expansive scope. Funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, reggae, rock, and more all have a place in her music. As one critic noted, she even helped “spark the neo-soul movement.” Her wide range is evident in not just her music but also her conversation with George as it incorporates everyone from Stevie Wonder to Joni Mitchell to Ben Webster to Jason Moran. The dialogue also advances Ndegocello's role as a philosopher. Time, in particular, takes on a central role in the discussion, whether Ndegeocello's ability to use technology in otherwise idle time to create art or how now is the moment to change society for the better. This is the Soho Radio podcast, showcasing the best broadcasts from our online radio station in the heart of Soho, London.Across our Soho and NYC + Culture channels, we have a wide range of shows covering every genre alongside chat, discussions and special productions. To catch up on all things Soho Radio head on over to mixcloud.com/sohoradio or tune in live anytime at sohoradiolondon.com.This is a Soho Radio Productions Podcast.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/soho-radio. We had the pleasure of interviewing Brian Cullman over Zoom video! Winter Clothes is the new summer record from Brian Cullman.Winter Clothes is Brian Cullman's most fully realized album to date, one with nothing to prove, just the easy camaraderie of first-rate musicians playing together, the snap crackle pop of the rhythm, and the smoky beauty of the songs. It's being released on September 11 by noted New Music label, Sunnyside Records. This is Cullman's first fully cooperative album with longtime friend and collaborator Jimi Zhivago (Glen Hansard, Ollabelle). Many of the songs were assembled during writing sessions where the two of them played ideas off one another, working through melodies and rhythms until the pieces were fully in sync. Tragically, Zhivago went into the hospital during recording of the project's final song. Brian visited him daily with the day's output and shared ideas and plans up until the day he passed away. The recordings were shelved for over a year before Cullman felt he could return to them. The album was mostly recorded live at Forrest Sound in Long Island City with the core lineup of Cullman (guitars, vocals); Zhivago (electric & acoustic guitars, organ, mandolin); Byron Isaacs (The Lumineers, Ollabelle) on bass, backing vocals and occasional drums; and Glenn Patscha (Ry Cooder, Ollabelle) on keyboards and backing vocals. Later sessions filled out the sound, adding Chris Bruce (Me'shell Ndegeocello, T Bone Burnett) on guitars; Christopher Heinz on drums; Tony Leone (Chris Robinson Brotherhood) on percussion; and Syd Straw (The Golden Palominos) and Mary Asque Fendley (Basque) on backing vocals. As always, Hector Castillo (Phillip Glass, David Bowie) was there to oversee the recording and to mix.We want to hear from you! In the early 90s, when Meshell Ndegeocello released Plantation Lullabies, her first album, she helped to usher in the era of neo-soul. Her debut inspired a slew of artists such as Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, and Lauryn Hill. On later albums, Ndegeocello went on to experiment with silky jazz ballads, staccato rapping, quiet meditations—all of it led by the fat, undeniable groove of her bass playing. But even as she began to work with the energy of rock and the introspection of folk, her sound remained steeped in soul. This week, we hear about Ndegeocello's most recent project, a theatrical work called Can I Get a Witness: The Gospel of James Baldwin. In the last few years, there's been a resurgence of interest in Baldwin, who died in 1987. Baldwin has emerged as an icon for a new generation of literary essayists—figures like Jesmyn Ward, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah—whose writing carries forward the power and precision in Baldwin's work, addressing the African-American experience in a range of registers, moving from journalism to memoir to sermon to polemic to fine-grained, fiercely argued sociological and psychological analysis. Meshell Ndegeocello's adoration of Baldwin is secular, despite its many religious trappings. Ndegeocello has sanctified James Baldwin for his intellectual curiosity, for the way his work leads its listeners and readers to enlightenment through argument, information, and analysis, rather than faith and mysticism. It's an immersive performance, somewhere between an improvisational concert, a dynamic church service, a rowdy, communal literary reading, and an exuberant celebration of a masterful writer. This week you'll also hear fiction from Ben Greenman. Ben has collaborated on books with Questlove and George Clinton and is the author most recently of Don Quixotic, a darkly comic investigation of the internal workings on the mind of our forty-fifth president. His story is performed here by actor Hank Harris, who has recently appeared on Twin Peaks and The Man in the High Castle.

Shae Fiol grew up in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by family members who were classically trained musicians such as her mother, father, both grandmothers. She is a true performer, the complete musical package -arranger, guitarist, lyricist, songwriter and vocalist. Her path to music began in her sophomore year at New Mexico University when her father came up with a great way for Shae to earn tuition - by writing songs. After purchasing his daughter a digital tape four track, he agreed to pay her $250 for every song she wrote. The result was a nine-song demo, which not only earned her enough cash to live off but also became the catalyst to build her indomitable song writing skills. After college, Shae's musical ambitions helped to land her in L.A. where she worked with Tha Liks, especially J-ro on a track "Run Wild" Just a year later, Shae was invited to New York City by Rockwilder to work with him on her album. Shae now calls Brooklyn home. She is a well-rounded performer who has showcased her talents at well-known NYC venues ranging from Joe's Pub, BAM and SOB's. She describes her music as creating the type of vibe, which allows one to travel inside their mind and daydream while still appreciating the eclectic mix of classical, folk, rhythm and blues, hip-hop, jazz and Latin playing in the background. Her music is personal, searching, and adventurous. Shae's first full-length album, Catch a Ride, was produced mostly by her collaborations featuring Grammy Award winners Stuart Matthewman of Sade, Me'shell Ndegeocello, and producer Rockwilder.

David Gamson has been messing around with sounds, songs, and arrangements for years. As keyboardist/writer/producer for the 80’s band Scritti Politti, he guided the brightly colored, synth-driven sound that was to create several hits in the UK and the U.S. For a band that started as a punk-based band, the migration to a soulful, yet groove-based sound was designed primarily by Gamson. Today, he works as an independent producer and songwriter working with artists such as Chaka Khan, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Green Gartside, Sheila E., George Benson, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, and has garnered several Grammy nominations for his work. His musical heritage was a natural training ground for him….having worked in a recording studio out of college and even having a father who was Leonard Bernstein’s assistant. It was the making of a talented producer, writer, and arranger who has become the “scritti” behind many artists today. Inside MusiCast welcomes David Gamson.
