In this episode, we'll be focusing on dry fly fishing. But that's not all! We'll also talk about the top rivers to fish in Connecticut, a hidden gem for fly fishing enthusiasts. Antoine will also share some gear recommendations to enhance your dry fly fishing experience. So kick back, grab your favorite beverage, and get ready for a laidback and informative conversation that will have you itching to hit the water with your dry flies at the ready! Farmington River Show Notes with Antoine Bissieux 1:34 - Antoine gives us an update since he guested on our podcast in episode 424. He talks about that time when he spent two weeks in the Farmington River with his old friend, Yannick Riviere, and some other anglers. When they were there, a tremendous storm came in. 8:20 - His season comes to an end after Christmas. He doesn't start fishing until mid-March. It varies from year to year depending on the weather. In his spare time, he usually ties flies and creates watches, which he finds relaxing. 11:07 - Antoine teaches us about Connecticut's best rivers. The Housatonic River is a beautiful river that offers excellent fishing in the fall and spring. Summer pike and bass fishing in Housatonic are fantastic. It's double the size of the Farmington. The Farmington is Connecticut's most well-known river. Click here for a list of the top 15 fly fishing locations in Connecticut. 15:14 - He explains why Farmington is the number one river to visit in Connecticut. To fish the Farmington, he advises starting from the section between New Hartford and Riverton. He mentions a guidebook to fishing the Farmington by the Farmington River Anglers Association. 20:02 - If you're going to hit dry flies in the Farmington River, the best month would be from the end of May to July. He also mentions the bugs present at this time. 22:53 - His off-season patterns are typically some form of crippled or handicapped bug. He mentions a fly that looks identical to it. A fly created by Yannick that he claims is hard to sink also works well for him. 29:00 - He gives more dry fly tips and tricks. He says that a good fly is nothing else but a good cast. 33:20 - We talk about his leader setup and other gear in detail. 40:44 - Antoine highly recommends Bestard boots for wading. 44:47 - He discusses the Magic CDC, a new CDC on the market that is not yet accessible in the United States. 46:37 - He uses a semi-automatic reel from Peux Fly Fishing, notably the Fulgor 01 which is also available at the Tactical Fly Fisher. He explains the difference between an automatic and semi-automatic reel. 51:40 - I ask him questions from our listeners about the rod and reel combo for fresh and saltwater and streamer fishing. 53:51 - He provides additional useful dry fly fishing tips and tricks. He recounts using a CDC fly called berzilleuse, which Yannick named for himself. 57:05 - He tells the secret of a good dry fly cast. 59:50 - He does fishing sessions with Orvis. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Friday, May 5.Friday will start sunny and pleasant, with a chance for some rain as the day goes on. According to the National Weather Service it will start out mostly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area, with temperatures reaching a high of 70 degrees. It will become increasingly cloudy as the day goes on, though, and there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. The overall average chance of precipitation is listed at 30 percent.Shortly after noon Thursday, Iowa lawmakers concluded their work for the year. Unless a special session is called, they will not return to resume their work at the Iowa Capitol until next January.Republican leaders in the Iowa Legislature frequently used the word “historic” in their descriptions of the 2023 session.House Speaker Pat Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, said Republicans followed through on the priorities “that we laid out to Iowans,” including property tax relief and “making sure that parents were a part of their children's education,” whether through school choice or school transparency requirements for curriculum and books.Meanwhile, Democrats did not mince words when describing their view of the 2023 session.Sen. Zach Wahls, the leader of the Senate Democrats from Coralville, told reporters the session was “one of the most divisive and cruel ever seen in the history of the Iowa Legislature,” and said state house Republicans “poured gasoline on the flames of the culture war.”Wahls criticized Republicans for the private school financial assistance program, their more strict regulation of books in K-12 schools with sexual content, and legislation that impacts transgender children in Iowa.As these comments suggest, most bills were passed along party lines, with Republicans passing most of their agenda without needing, or receiving, any support from Democrats. They did agree on a few things, such as a property tax reform bill that aims to lower property taxes by restricting how much funding schools and local governments can raise from increased growth to property values over a given time period. Governor Kim Reynolds signed that bill, almost unanimously approved by state lawmakers, on Thursday.Kirkwood Community College named its new president on Thursday.Nearly 10 years after leaving her vice presidential post at Kirkwood Community College for a senior role at ACT, Kristie Fisher has landed the premiere post atop Eastern Iowa's largest community college.Fisher had spent her last four years leading the 2,442-student Iowa Valley Community College District as its chancellor and president. She arrives during challenging times for higher education. All of Iowa's community colleges have lost students in recent years. While seven of the state's community colleges saw slight enrollment upticks in the fall, Kirkwood was among eight that saw a dip — although it remains the state's second largest behind Des Moines Area Community College.“One of the things that I think not just Kirkwood but all community colleges are going to be facing is the fact that there's so much learning loss from the time of the pandemic,” she said to the question of big issues she'll have to tackle as Kirkwood president. “I think we're going to see that for the next decade.”

In 2014 I spoke with Joe Bonamassa about his album 'Different Shades Of Blue' on 96.9 WOUR in Utica , NY which is Joe's hometown. He discusses writing original music in Nashville, writing with Jonathan Cain of Journey, James Dewar & Robin Trower, B.B. King, & Johnny Winter who had passed away recently. I loved living in Utica and you can tell Joe loved growing up there and in nearby New Hartford.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, May 24. Tuesday will begin a trend of rainier weather that will continue through Thursday. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 68 degrees. The chance for rain will pick up to around 40 percent after 4 p.m. Tuesday and spike up to 90 percent overnight into Wednesday. It will be breezy late Tuesday as rain creeps its way closer, and the low temperature should be around 53 degrees. A proposal by Gov. Kim Reynolds to shift taxpayer funding for public schools to scholarships for private school tuition assistance will not pass the Iowa Legislature this year, a top statehouse Republican said on Monday. Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, told reporters Monday that there were not enough votes among the 60 House Republicans to get the 51 votes needed to pass the proposal in the 100-member House. The legislative proposal had already passed the Republican-led Iowa Senate and Republican leaders had been holding up the session in hopes of reaching a compromise with House Republicans. The bulk of the holdouts among House Republicans were legislators in rural districts, where public school officials said the loss of students to private schools could be fiscally devastating. It is the second consecutive year that Reynolds, a Republican, made the proposal, only to see it falter in the Republican-controlled Iowa House. With Cedar Rapids casino backers on the cusp of applying again for a state license, the Iowa Legislature with scant notice Monday approved a moratorium on issuing any new approvals for casinos for two years. The moratorium, a new topic that came up in what appears to be the last days of the 2022 legislative session, is part of https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=89&ba=HF2497 (House File 2497), a broader law on gaming and regulations. The bill was passed 35-11 in the Iowa Senate and later 60-23 in the Iowa House. The measure needs Gov. Kim Reynolds' approval to become law. If it becomes law, the hiatus would thwart Cedar Rapids' third try for a casino until July 2024. State regulators previously denied a gaming license to Linn County in 2014 and 2017. “It's incredibly disappointing that this can happen seemingly in the dark of night without the city to even have the opportunity to respond,” Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell said after the vote. Lawmakers who supported the change argued that Iowa's gambling industry is at its saturation point and any other casinos would cannibalize the existing market. A judge has set a hearing in July on a motion to move the trial of one of two Fairfield teens accused of killing a high school Spanish teacher with a baseball bat out of Jefferson County because of pretrial publicity and to suppress several pieces of evidence and his statements to police at trial. A lawyer for https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-rules-2nd-fairfield-teen-to-be-tried-as-adult/ (Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, 16, )says her client can't get a fair and impartial jury in Jefferson County based on “extensive pretrial publicity.” In the suppression motion by Miller's lawyer, filed previously in March, the defense is asking the court to not allow the prosecution to submit evidence obtained during a search of Miller's residence on Nov. 4 of last year, and his statements to police because his rights were violated. In the motion, Miller's lawyer argues that Miller's mother signed a juvenile waiver when police asked to speak with her son about a missing person — Graber. Miller's mother was told about vandalism at Graber's home, not that it was regarding a homicide investigation or that Miller was a suspect. His lawyer argued that the subsequent police interrogation was thus tainted by the fact that Miller was not properly informed of his rights.
