Since we just covered the 1985 zombie classic Return of the Living Dead on the Cult Film Club, we thought it would be apt to re-release Paxton's I Read Movies episode where he covers the film's novelization written by none other than Night of the Living Dead's John Russo. If you're curious about how the movie might differ from the original script, or how Russo had a darker take on a sequel to NotLD, check out this episode.
The battle begins in what you could easily call the Romero Division, where the competitors are all traditional zombie movies in one key way or another. In this episode "World War Z" faces off with "Night of the Living Dead" (1967) and "The Dead" contends with NOTLD 90.
William Butler has quite the extensive horror résumé. He faced Jason Voorhees in “Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,” the Sawyer clan in “Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” flesh-eating zombies in “Night of the LIving Dead” (1990), and even appeared in 2 episodes of “Freddy's Nightmares.” Tune in to hear all about his vast career in the genre, the many horror greats he's worked with throughout the years, and some exciting updates on his latest projects.
This week Warren Wagner and I discuss George A. Romero's all-time classic NotLD. "The Only Safe Place is the Dark" was just published by Ghoulish Books. It's set in the zombie apocalypse so what better sin to confess to than the sin of never having watched THE MOST IMPORTANT ZOMBIE MOVIE EVER! Don't worry, I put him thru the wringer. But we had a great time discussing this seminal work of art. Join us in the Confessional! Follow Warren here Purchase The Only Safe Place is the Dark here Support the show here

“They're coming to get you, Barbra.” In our second episode, Bradford and Eric marvel at George A. Romero's 1968 public domain classic, Night of The Living Dead. Shot in and around Pittsburgh, featuring a troupe of primarily amateur actors, and chock full of practical effects, this is the film that launched Romero's career and the ...of The Dead series. Halloween is almost upon us. Instead of doing the normal Halloween themed movie, this year we thought we would talk about one of the early films inspired by NOTLD, which has nothing but atmosphere and spooky vibes; Amando de Ossorio's 1972 classic TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD. Although, this was dubbed and released in North America, it is definitely better to avoid that version and find the original Spanish release. We touch on the many reasons why in this episode. We also give a run down of movies we've been watching, bands we've been jamming, and recent activities in the Burnt Offerings camp. And, if you haven't heard, ACID WITCH has a new release! Go scoop that shit up.
We rewatched my favorite film of all time (I've seen it hundreds of times and still find new things) and give you our thoughts on it, and also the musical that we wrote based on it. While Frankenstein is the father of the “undead”, NOTLD is the father of the modern zombie, a blue collar monster that we can't ever get rid of in modern horror. https://connerandsmith.myspreadshop.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/connerandsmithshow/message

DAY OF THE DEAD Secuelas: 3 peliculas mas. Budget: US $3.500.000 Gross: US $34.000.000 Año: 1985 Director: George A. Romero Actores: Lori Cardille (Sarah), Joseph Pilato (Capitan Rhodes) & Sherman Howard (Bub). Before anybody gets the wrong idea, let me just say that (if I haven't said it during every other episode at some point) this guy is my favorite writer/director and NOTLD is my favorite movie of all time... But with every director's legacy comes the growing pains of learning every film you make won't get the same response. In this case, and while not all the films are terrible at all, the "Dead" saga has had it's fair share of ups and downs as time went on. For a series that started with sooo much promise, there were some major mistakes made on the Legend's behalf, so I had to vent about it. Enjoy, people.
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972) discussed
Night Of The Living Dead is obviously my favorite film of all time... And being as though nobody could seem to respect it enough to even get it right after the 1990 remake, there's really nowhere to go but up with this property, right? So when the news broke that a new remake is in the works, I actually was pretty thrilled. But then something happened that totally made me second guess, but I'll let that explain itself as the episode goes on. I also give a brief history of the NOTLD property, just to give people an idea of how far we have and haven't come over the years. Enjoy, people.
It's Halloween so time for the third NOTLD episode. In this episode I talk about hauntings and instances of ghosts in Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. From festivals aiming to placate them through to reports of hauntings and even ways to counter a ghost. There's even a very dangerous trick with a walnut. Episode notes at www.ancientblogger.com. It's October, and that means Planet 8 is taking a turn into the creepier side of things! This episode we focus on that classic of cult films, and the one that really started the zombie craze, Night of the Living Dead! We have not one, but two special treats for you: first, an exclusive Planet 8 interview with actress Judith O'Dea, who starred as Barbara in the film. To add on to that, discussing the film with us is none other than the always-entertaining Mr. Lobo, host of Cinema Insomnia. Hey, what more could you ask for?We open up with our interview with Ms. O'Dea, whose performance as Barbara in NotLD really sold the feelings of fear and confusion that the characters were experiencing. We'll learn about how she became an actress, her early career, and how she became involved in making the film. Ms. O'Dea was a generous and insightful interviewee and we had a wonderful time talking with her. Then we move into a freewheeling discussion of the film with our special guest, Mr. Lobo. We'll reminisce about our first time viewing NotLD -that's something you never forget! - and how it made us think about how we would defend our homes from zombies!Night of the Living Dead is definitely the grand-daddy of all our modern zombie films and TV shows. Before George Romero made his little film, zombies had always been connected to voodoo or sorcery and there had never been a connection to cannibalism. Of course, the creatures in NotLD weren't called zombies -that came later. But so many conventions of modern zombie lore came out of this film.Even today, the film resonates with viewers. Maybe it's the almost documentary feel of the film, or the stark black and white look; but it is still compelling. There's a deep sense of despair, of nihilism, that pervades the film. Later films may have been gorier or filled with more stunts, but Night seems to have the darkest soul. If you haven't seen it in a while, give it a look. For our Sensor Sweep, we want to share all things Mr. Lobo! If you have never experienced Cinema Insomnia, never taken the pledge of the Sleepless Knights of Insomnia, check out episodes on Amazon Prime, Vimeo. his streaming channel OSI74 on Roku, the YouTube channel for Mr. Lobo, and of course, cinemainsomnia.com. You can also find him on Facebook and Twitter -honestly, you can find Mr. Lobo everywhere! It's an invasion! Check him out! That wraps it up for us. We hope you enjoyed this extra-special look at a classic horror film. Please share your thoughts, experiences, and feedback with us here, or at our two other locations: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastThanks for listening!
Instead of me fishing for my copy of the Night Of The Living Dead remake, like a normal person, I came back around this this dope documentary on YouTube... What a find this was back when I first came across it a few years back. There's a reason that NOTLD 1990 is the best horror remake for me, but to see how some of it was done and hear points of views from the cast/crew is epic. So of course I had to put my two cents in and talk during the play through. Enjoy, y'all.
In addition to House on Haunted Hill, we discuss: Village of the Damned, 31, House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, Lords of Salem, The Exorcist 3, The Exorcist 2, Pure, Creep, Vampires, Haunters, Prophecy, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, Body Bags, Critters: A New Binge, Halloween III, The Furies, They Live, NOTLD 68, NOTLD […]
Rest In Peace to Dan O'Bannon for being the brains (pun intended) of this here operation on screen... Without him, this horror comedy zombie epic wouldn't have been possible. So of course I had to talk everyone's heads off about one of my top 5 zombie movies ever made, all while being harmless and keeping your own brains intact. I didn't nerd out as much as I did with NOTLD, but I enjoyed this, and hope you listeners do the same.

Episode 102 ushers in that most wonderful time of the year. Yes, the month of Halloween! Spooky fun fact: three out of ten storage units have a dead body in them. Just ask Will, he’ll tell you it’s true! Speaking of spooky, your hosts have that Halloween feeling and “Tales of Halloween” (2015) is just the thing! Would this be perfect to play in the background during a party? Well, it may not be NOTLD or "The Thing from Another World”, but yes, indeed! There are ten stories and they are a lot of scary fun. Many of Hollywood’s horror stars, directors and horror nerds populate the Tales. Is it as much fun as a "Darling Pet Monkey”? Yes, and with about half the clean-up required! Is it as cool as Vincent Price’s shrunken apple head kit? We think so, and it’s easier to find! Just like Cool Hand Luke said he could eat fifty eggs, at least two of your hosts will be going for a horror movie a day for "31 Days of Halloween”. And without George Kennedy around to help! So, get an early start so you don’t have to cram it in before midnight! Find us on Instagram, where we are @chewingthescenery or easily find us on Facebook. Episode 36 is an honor for Chewing the Scenery. Judith O'Dea, “Barbara” from the original Night of the Living Dead” sits down with Richard for an interview. She talks about about how she got her start and of course, the 1968 film that changed it all. So, why did Barbara fall apart? Why didn't she take up arms and dispatch those ghouls? Did writer John Russo really know how big this little movie would become? The answers to these questions and more as we get to know this iconic actor and lovely person a little better.
Episode 32 is an honor for Chewing the Scenery. Russ Streiner, “Johnny” from the original Night of the Living Dead” sits down with Richard for an interview packed full of information and insights about the 1968 film that changed it all. In fact, Russ promises that with the 50th anniversary of NOTLD on the horizon, he and the rest of the filmmakers and actors will have some “tricks up their sleeve” to celebrate it. So, why did Johnny have fancy driving gloves for a Pontiac LeMans? Why did Richard pay him 75 cents? What’s the Pittsburgh Film Office? The answers to these questions and more as we get to know this iconic actor/producer a little better. Now, check to see if there’s any of that candy left and let’s start whistling past the graveyard, because he’s coming to get you! Episode 12 is a special one. We couldn’t keep this one from you any longer…a celebrity interview with entertainment icon and film critic Joe Bob Briggs. You may remember him from the TNT show he hosted “Monster Vision” or maybe you’ve read one of his many books. If not, it doesn’t matter- he’s a great interview! This was recorded on Halloween weekend at Colorado Horror Con. We had Night of the Living Dead in mind, since we knew that recording our episode would happen soon after, but decided that we would release this episode on its own. Joe Bob Briggs deserves his own spotlight, and in it he shares a wealth of knowledge, gives mad props to Tom Savini for his NOTLD remake, David Cronenberg for the Fly, and suggests some hidden cinematic gems you might also enjoy. Joe Bob has advice to new filmmakers, considering the “barriers of entry” into filmmaking are lower than they’ve ever been. So, kick back and enjoy a conversation with a real drive-in expert!

Finally, the Zom Bee episode! In this episode, we discuss all the buzz about the zombie culture epidemic and segueing seamlessly into apocalypse culture. Not a lot of spoilers, but plenty of awesome rambling, shambling, and ambling. Discussion drops include World War Z, White Zombie, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Last Man on Earth, I Am Legend, Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Young Frankenstein, Zombieland, Twelve Monkeys, Armageddon, a little known TV series called "The Walking Dead", and a comic book series by the same name. Special Guest Dr Mandeville, who has a PhD in Revenant Studies, takes us on a journey into his NOTLD tattoo, right under the skin of the zombie phenomenon and into the delicious rotting flesh beneath. Oops... Did I say "delicious"? I meant "metaphorical".Key Notes: Are you a big apocalypse?, Brain Panini, "the removal of the veil", wet things under other wet things (most of which are poisonous), Complacency: The #1 Killer in America after broccoli, and the squiffiness of certain doom.- - - - - Crunching Numbers by the Polish Ambassador Copyright Polish Ambassador Records 2006; Popcorn Frog by MC Chris Copyright mc chris llc 2011; Zombie by The Cranberries Copyright Island Records 1994
