2025-10-16 | Silicon Wafers 030 | The Cracks Are Showing in the Russian economy. Loyalist economists on state TV now warn the economy is sliding into a hole the Kremlin can't paper over. Alarm bells inside Russia's own information space are ringing. We'll dig into the numbers—tax hikes, corporate losses, shuttered factories, and cash-starved regions—and why it matters for Putin's war machine. What Russia's own economists are saying. Let's start with what normally never breaks through the propaganda glaze. In recent weeks, pro-Kremlin economists on state channels have begun sounding like doomsayers. One TV guest fumed that the rules “keep changing,” and that the new tax rises will ripple through to ordinary people far beyond “two percent on the price tag” referencing the VAT hike. He warned the real hit at the till could be 10–20%, depending on the supply chain. Another economist was even blunter: “Real living standards will fall.” Why? Fuel and logistics feed into every product price, wages trail inflation, and now comes a heavier tax squeeze. ----------Partner on this video: KYIV OF MINE Watch the trailer now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arJUcE1rxY0'Kyiv of Mine' is a documentary series about Ukraine's beautiful capital, Kyiv. The very antithesis in fact of a doom-laden and worthy wartime documentary. This is a work that is extraordinarily uplifting. My friend Operator Starsky says the film is “Made with so much love. The film series will make you laugh and cry.” ----------Autumn Harvest: Silicon Curtain (Goal €22,000)This is super important. « Comment devrait-on réagir ?

The 2024 film and TV awards season is impressive already. We've already crowned one EGOT winner. One awards show tied itself for the number of actors of color to win an acting award in one year. One TV show set a record for the number of losses it scored over all its years on the air. One Black woman has become only the second Black actress to win lead actress in a comedy series at a particular awards show.Listen in to find out who the EGOT winner is, how many years it had been since since this many people of color had won acting awards in one year, which show never won a single (high-deserved) award, and which actress won lead actress and how long it had been since another Black woman had won that award. We cover many more awards than these! We tell you what we liked and didn't like about the awards shows we've watched so far: the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Emmys. “Hot Mics and TV Lights: The Armed Forces Vietnam Network” is the latest work from Marc Yablonka. The book provides the first person perspective of thirty seven individuals who served with the Armed Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN).The AFVN was the military broadcast network that served American service personnel during the Vietnam War. Navy Chief Petty Officer Bryan Arbuckle is considered the “father” of AFVN. He put it together in 1962 over a matter of weeks employing used equipment and borrowed record albums. Marc says that without collaborator Rick Frederickson it would have been a completely different work. Frederickson was a newsman at AFVN Saigon. He conducted many of the 37 interviews featured in Hot Mics, including Adrian Cronauer whose story inspired the movie “Good Morning Vietnam”. The film was the brainchild of Ben Moses, who worked with Cronauer. Ben said the movie was “Half Adrian, half me, and half made up.” When he first began pitching the idea he had trouble finding purchase. One TV executive even told him “How dare you proposed doing something funny about Vietnam.” Not all the stories are humorous. During the Tet offensive, nine members of the Hue AFVN station found themselves holding off attackers for five days. Three were killed, five were taken prisoner and one escaped. Another DJ was broadcasting when a rocket attack struck the studios. He may be the only DJ to be awarded a Purple Heart while on the air. Project Jenny entailed putting TV/Radio broadcasting “stations” into three Lockheed Constellation aircraft. They would fly over the country providing TV broadcasts and psyops. In one incident they were running the wrong soundtrack for a TV program causing South Vietnamese officials to think the plane had been commandeered by the enemy. They sent up jet fighters to shoot them down. Thankfully, the broadcasters were able to straighten things out before that occurred. TAKEAWAY: “Thinking of them as only in the rear with the gear does not apply to what the AFVN staff members really went through in Vietnam.”

A few months earlier it had been "Wild Winter." And then it came into spring, what they called "Soggy Spring" that year - the sequel. Oh yeah, we might have thought that we had seen the last of those mountains of snow. Wrong again. In fact, the weather guys had predicted that all that snow would come floating in melted form down our rivers and streams. And there were the floods again! Listen, I lived a long time in a town who has one claim to fame in national newscasts - major flooding. They made it again that year. It's just a heartache that we knew all too well. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Why Temptation Wins." You know when it's flood season, the weather people all across the country issue their oft-repeated warning: "Turn around, don't drown." In a matter of minutes, an always-safe bridge or water crossing can suddenly become a torrent of racing flood water, and a death trap for those who think they can cross as usual. Cars, vans, trucks, and even there was even an Amish buggy a few months earlier. They can be swept away in a fatal current. So keep it coming, weather guys; tell us when we need to hear it, "Turn around, don't drown." Actually, that's advice that some folks wish that they had heeded much sooner. I mean morally and spiritually. Few people who have become addicted or adulterous ever expected to get carried away. No one thinks that today's deception, today's "little" compromise of integrity or purity will one day sweep them away in an inescapable flood. Who could guess that a click on a web page, a little flirtation, a lie to get out of a jam would lead to a torrent of expensive consequences? After national headlines exposed the unfaithfulness of her politician husband, his betrayed wife said this: "You can pick your sin. You can't pick your consequences." Boy, isn't that true! One TV meteorologist said that the reason people die crossing familiar bridges in flood times is a fatal miscalculation. He said, "They overestimate the power of their car, and they underestimate the power of the water." Let's tweak that just a little to identify what makes even spiritual giants fall farther than they ever dreamed: "They overestimate their power to resist, and they underestimate the power of sin." The inexorable progression of spiritual seduction and disaster goes like this in James 1:15, "Desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." And our word for today from the Word of God in 1 Corinthians 10:12 sounds this alarm: "If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall." There's probably someone who's hearing this today, who's driving very close to the edge of the flood. Flirting with those famous last words, "I can handle it." No, you can't. Listen to these words from Genesis. Take it, if necessary, as a personal warning, "Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it" (Genesis 4:7). Turn around. Don't drown. Please.

There's a new local tv news station in our region and it's devoted to the Spanish-speaking community. But in a region that struggles with affordability, it's a challenge getting the operation off the ground.
A few weeks ago, I spoke to filmmaker Matthieu Rytz about his stunning documentary Deep Rising. He was in the country speaking at the DocEdge Film Festival and providing a rare insight into the secretive world of the corporations mining the ocean floor. Deep Rising takes us 4km down to the bottom of the South Pacific, where the Clarion-Clipperton zone lies. It's a dark, cold, sparse world we know little about, other than that it's home to very old rocks containing some of the world's most sought after minerals, and luminescent and jelly like creatures which look like they're from another world. If, like me, you've seen Deep Rising, its surreal images of the ocean's floor stuck in your mind this week as we waited to learn the fate of the OceanGate Expeditions unclassed, uncertified submersible. Most of us at some point likely wondered what it would be like to be trapped in such a small space in a place so vast and unreachable. Is that why there was so much interest? The story dominated the news from the moment it was announced the Titan had lost contact with the surface. Many other places in the world this week experienced innocent people's lives at risk, or deaths, but none stuck in the headlines quite like this. One TV station had a oxygen countdown playing on screen showing how much air was left in the submersible – not only was coverage out of proportion, it at times was also crass. So what was it that created millions of views, hits and hashtags? It's probably obvious that as a film reviewer I would end up comparing this story to a film. But haven't we all? As one associate professor of communication and media studies said: “At its core, it contains all the essential elements of an addictive, alluring media spectacle.” That was until the end, when the miracle ending failed to materialise and we were reminded this was real life. But there's more to it. Amy Morin, a psychotherapist and host of the Mentally Stronger podcast, said: "The idea of 'time running out' is most people's biggest fear,” and "A lot of people are envisioning what it would be like to be on the sub knowing they have less than 24 hours of oxygen if they're not rescued. We're also intrigued by adventurers and what risks they'll take in life.” Watching wealthy people do incredibly risky things and taking adventure sport to the extremes has become a new past time - be it conquering space or the depths of the ocean. And then there's the location, and the continuing fascination with one of the great shipwrecks. This tragedy adds another layer to the Titanic story. But for all that did this warrant the attention it received? Filmmaker James Cameron, who has dived more than 30 times to the Titanic wreck, was quick to point out that the search operation turned into a “prolonged and nightmarish charade” which added to the agony of the passengers' families. It's a good point, especially after the US Navy admitted they'd detected the implosion of the Titan submersible just hours after it entered the water. It's understandable to hold out hope. Hope fills the space between fact and fiction until the facts are confirmed- but sharing this information, even if it was just privately with the families, may have been the kindest thing to do. Considering the attention captured this week, it may only be a matter of time before this story inspires a film. I can only hope though that it's quite a long time before someone decides to make money from this sad tragedy. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EX50 - Governor Tom - From Acting to Music - An Honest Mix of Indy, Folk, Jazz and Blues GOVERNOR TOM - a singer-songwriter whose dynamic indie-folk, genre-bending style weaves truthiness and wit with unapologetic poignancy - is a pseudonym of Tom Wood, a musician-writer-actor who has co-starred in such films as The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals, Under Siege and Ulee's Gold. Currently, Tom has pursued his most revered goal of creating projects from scratch and distributing them to a worldwide audience. As Governor Tom, he brings songs of love and pain from a tale of music, money, family and politics. Singer-Songwriter Governor Tom's dynamic indie-folk, genre-bending style weaves truthiness and wit with unapologetic poignanc RELEASE OF "PUBLIC EYE" After the release of his naughty blues track “Architect of Love,” Governor Tom is back with “Public Eye,” the final track to be released as a single from his upcoming EP. Featuring two acoustic guitars, it introduces a grooving, pop/folk vibe. “That seems to be where my music is headed,” says Tom Wood, the creator of Governor Tom. “Public Eye” is an ode to the challenges of being a young starlet, “Any one of a tragic dozen,” Tom adds. “I believe it also reflects on what's happening to many young girls' mental health nowadays.” Tom is a multi-talented actor, writer, musician, and producer who co-starred in The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals, Under Siege, and more. He took a sabbatical from auditioning to fulfill a commitment to himself to create original works. After countless screenplays and a few development deals, nothing remained realized until 2020 when, as Governor Tom, he released his first single “A Man with a Hat,” followed in 2021 by the liberating, upbeat “Living Wild,” which was particularly well-received in the U.K. Music was always there for Tom, constantly challenging him to build and grow—learning piano from his grandmother, neighborhood “concerts” singing covers, teaching himself guitar, and numerous professional musicals and revues. When he realized that modern technology would help him bring his original creations to life, Tom went all in. One TV project that Tom has developed features the character of Governor Tom, who's the front man of a once- famous, one-hit-wonder glam-rock band. To promote the project, Tom dedicated himself to brushing up his guitar skills. When he returned to the instrument, something had changed. All his screenwriting had grown a new muscle in him. Instead of playing covers, Tom immediately began writing song after song without restraint. “There's a level of honesty I'm searching for through Governor Tom—honesty in storytelling, communicating, and performing—that I believe will only be attained through performing my own creations. Music does not lie.” “Public Eye” is about invasiveness. This invasiveness affects all of us—“regular” citizens are watched and monitored through “personal” devices. “It's a world of unimagined scrutiny” and “worthless, vindictive mockery” state the lyrics of “Public Eye.” “It's a none-too-subtle metaphor for the cruelty inflicted upon young girls through social media, and elsewhere, to serve the voyeurism of a culturally malnourished public,” Tom says. Still, it makes for some beautiful music. “I'm so proud of this piece,” Tom concludes. “It's the closest I've gotten so far to achieving the sound and style I've been working toward.” https://governortommusic.com/ Songs Featured: GOVERNOR TOM - A Man with a Hat GOVERNOR TOM - Living Wild GOVERNOR TOM - Architect of Love GOVERNOR TOM - Public Eye ___ https://truemediasolutions.ca/add-to-my-playlist
Throwback Trivia
Facebook and other social media have afforded us the wonderful privilege of knowing more about our friends than we ever really wanted to. "I just blew my nose. Thought you all should know." Best of all, we can share our "selfies"; pictures of me, taken by me. Because it's all about me, right? No! Well, at least it's not supposed to be. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I'd like to have A Word With You today about "The Lonely World of 'Selfies.'" One TV documentary said, "There is an epidemic of loneliness today." Well, that's true. Even in a world that, in one way, is more connected than ever. Superficially, but strangely lacking in the kind of deep human connection that satisfies our love-starved hearts. Life was never meant to be a "selfie" existence. Where it's all about how I look, what I'm doing, what I'm feeling, what I need. The problem is a world that's only as big as me is a world that's too small to live in. Years ago, a young man wrote to Mother Teresa with a pretty compelling question. This woman who had buried her life in the needs of the most broken in Calcutta's slums was clearly the one who would know the answer. He asked, "What can I do to have a significant life like you have?" Mother Teresa's postcard reply was only four words: "Find your own Calcutta." Or, "Find some people who need you and be there for them." You don't have to go to Calcutta to find them. They're in the local senior citizens' facility, or they may be kids struggling in school who could flourish if someone would take time to tutor them or mentor them. "Calcutta" may be those homeless people, or the unemployed, or the medically sidelined people down the block. In fact, you may not have to look any farther than the people you work with or play with or go to school with. On any given day, someone in your world needs a smile, or a hug, a compliment, a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or just to be noticed or included. It's a matter of recalibrating your radar to see the people for whom you could make a difference. But self-sacrifice is not without personal benefit. Because the fastest way to get out of your pit is to pull someone else out of theirs. And the best antidote for being lonely is to be there for someone else. So, turn your camera lens the other way to make your life a "youie" instead of a "selfie." where the other person is the picture; where your life mission is simple; make each person feel like they matter. In our word for today from the Word of God, in 2 Corinthians 5:15, God says, "Christ died for all that they should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and rose again." See, we're not supposed to live for ourselves anymore. Years ago, when I occasionally spoke for the New York Giants chapels, I had the privilege of meeting their defensive end, George Martin. A great football player, yes. In fact, he had a Super Bowl ring and all. But an even greater man, because he always made other people the big deal instead of himself. He spoke one year for our local high school football team. He had just been named the NFL's Man of the Year for his work with sick and dying children along with a bunch of charitable causes. It wasn't the only award he received for "finding his own Calcutta." He told our players, "You need to know the real reason I'm doing these things. I'm just copying my hero. My hero is Jesus Christ." He went on to explain how Jesus forgot about Himself to give us a chance to go to heaven someday and have a relationship with the God whose love we were made for. For that to happen, the wall between us and God had to come down. And it could only come down if the penalty for us running our own life was paid; a death penalty. The Bible says, "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Living forever instead of punishment forever; heaven instead of hell. The Bible says, "the Son of God loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). That's a love you need to experience for yourself. You can begin that relationship, a love relationship with Him, this very day. Just say, "Jesus, I'm yours." Go to our website. We can help you know how you can be sure you belong to Him. That website is ANewStory.com. Life is never the same once you've experienced for yourself the transforming love of Jesus Christ.

Today I share a story that I have not thought about in a long time. Ti's weird to think of a time when there was ONE TV in the house, and you couldn't fast forward through the commercials. My brother and I created a sport that we played during the commercials. This came to me after attending a storytelling event from Matthew Disk who is the author of one of my favorite books Storyworthy. He has an exercise where you list three random things you can touch. You then have one minute to come up with a story about one of those items, and then you two minutes to tell a story about it. The word that inspired this episode was pillow.

Susan Rice has been called a lot of names. She was nicknamed "Spo" as a child, for her sporting athletic abilities. President Barack Obama labeled her one of three "Furies" on his national security team. One TV commentator called her "the right's favorite chew-toy," following her now infamous round of TV talk shows days after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Just this weekend, President Donald Trump tweeted that Rice was a "disaster" for her role in the Obama administration's Syria policy. And, as we learn in her new autobiography, Tough Love: My Story of the Things Worth Fighting For , she has been called worse.
