« Comment devrait-on réagir ?

The 2024 film and TV awards season is impressive already. We've already crowned one EGOT winner. One awards show tied itself for the number of actors of color to win an acting award in one year. One TV show set a record for the number of losses it scored over all its years on the air. One Black woman has become only the second Black actress to win lead actress in a comedy series at a particular awards show.Listen in to find out who the EGOT winner is, how many years it had been since since this many people of color had won acting awards in one year, which show never won a single (high-deserved) award, and which actress won lead actress and how long it had been since another Black woman had won that award. We cover many more awards than these! We tell you what we liked and didn't like about the awards shows we've watched so far: the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Emmys. “Hot Mics and TV Lights: The Armed Forces Vietnam Network” is the latest work from Marc Yablonka. The book provides the first person perspective of thirty seven individuals who served with the Armed Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN).The AFVN was the military broadcast network that served American service personnel during the Vietnam War. Navy Chief Petty Officer Bryan Arbuckle is considered the “father” of AFVN. He put it together in 1962 over a matter of weeks employing used equipment and borrowed record albums. Marc says that without collaborator Rick Frederickson it would have been a completely different work. Frederickson was a newsman at AFVN Saigon. He conducted many of the 37 interviews featured in Hot Mics, including Adrian Cronauer whose story inspired the movie “Good Morning Vietnam”. The film was the brainchild of Ben Moses, who worked with Cronauer. Ben said the movie was “Half Adrian, half me, and half made up.” When he first began pitching the idea he had trouble finding purchase. One TV executive even told him “How dare you proposed doing something funny about Vietnam.” Not all the stories are humorous. During the Tet offensive, nine members of the Hue AFVN station found themselves holding off attackers for five days. Three were killed, five were taken prisoner and one escaped. Another DJ was broadcasting when a rocket attack struck the studios. He may be the only DJ to be awarded a Purple Heart while on the air. Project Jenny entailed putting TV/Radio broadcasting “stations” into three Lockheed Constellation aircraft. They would fly over the country providing TV broadcasts and psyops. In one incident they were running the wrong soundtrack for a TV program causing South Vietnamese officials to think the plane had been commandeered by the enemy. They sent up jet fighters to shoot them down. Thankfully, the broadcasters were able to straighten things out before that occurred. TAKEAWAY: “Thinking of them as only in the rear with the gear does not apply to what the AFVN staff members really went through in Vietnam.”

A few months earlier it had been "Wild Winter." And then it came into spring, what they called "Soggy Spring" that year - the sequel. Oh yeah, we might have thought that we had seen the last of those mountains of snow. Wrong again. In fact, the weather guys had predicted that all that snow would come floating in melted form down our rivers and streams. And there were the floods again! Listen, I lived a long time in a town who has one claim to fame in national newscasts - major flooding. They made it again that year. It's just a heartache that we knew all too well. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Why Temptation Wins." You know when it's flood season, the weather people all across the country issue their oft-repeated warning: "Turn around, don't drown." In a matter of minutes, an always-safe bridge or water crossing can suddenly become a torrent of racing flood water, and a death trap for those who think they can cross as usual. Cars, vans, trucks, and even there was even an Amish buggy a few months earlier. They can be swept away in a fatal current. So keep it coming, weather guys; tell us when we need to hear it, "Turn around, don't drown." Actually, that's advice that some folks wish that they had heeded much sooner. I mean morally and spiritually. Few people who have become addicted or adulterous ever expected to get carried away. No one thinks that today's deception, today's "little" compromise of integrity or purity will one day sweep them away in an inescapable flood. Who could guess that a click on a web page, a little flirtation, a lie to get out of a jam would lead to a torrent of expensive consequences? After national headlines exposed the unfaithfulness of her politician husband, his betrayed wife said this: "You can pick your sin. You can't pick your consequences." Boy, isn't that true! One TV meteorologist said that the reason people die crossing familiar bridges in flood times is a fatal miscalculation. He said, "They overestimate the power of their car, and they underestimate the power of the water." Let's tweak that just a little to identify what makes even spiritual giants fall farther than they ever dreamed: "They overestimate their power to resist, and they underestimate the power of sin." The inexorable progression of spiritual seduction and disaster goes like this in James 1:15, "Desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." And our word for today from the Word of God in 1 Corinthians 10:12 sounds this alarm: "If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall." There's probably someone who's hearing this today, who's driving very close to the edge of the flood. Flirting with those famous last words, "I can handle it." No, you can't. Listen to these words from Genesis. Take it, if necessary, as a personal warning, "Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it" (Genesis 4:7). Turn around. Don't drown. Please.

There's a new local tv news station in our region and it's devoted to the Spanish-speaking community. But in a region that struggles with affordability, it's a challenge getting the operation off the ground.
A few weeks ago, I spoke to filmmaker Matthieu Rytz about his stunning documentary Deep Rising. He was in the country speaking at the DocEdge Film Festival and providing a rare insight into the secretive world of the corporations mining the ocean floor. Deep Rising takes us 4km down to the bottom of the South Pacific, where the Clarion-Clipperton zone lies. It's a dark, cold, sparse world we know little about, other than that it's home to very old rocks containing some of the world's most sought after minerals, and luminescent and jelly like creatures which look like they're from another world. If, like me, you've seen Deep Rising, its surreal images of the ocean's floor stuck in your mind this week as we waited to learn the fate of the OceanGate Expeditions unclassed, uncertified submersible. Most of us at some point likely wondered what it would be like to be trapped in such a small space in a place so vast and unreachable. Is that why there was so much interest? The story dominated the news from the moment it was announced the Titan had lost contact with the surface. Many other places in the world this week experienced innocent people's lives at risk, or deaths, but none stuck in the headlines quite like this. One TV station had a oxygen countdown playing on screen showing how much air was left in the submersible – not only was coverage out of proportion, it at times was also crass. So what was it that created millions of views, hits and hashtags? It's probably obvious that as a film reviewer I would end up comparing this story to a film. But haven't we all? As one associate professor of communication and media studies said: “At its core, it contains all the essential elements of an addictive, alluring media spectacle.” That was until the end, when the miracle ending failed to materialise and we were reminded this was real life. But there's more to it. Amy Morin, a psychotherapist and host of the Mentally Stronger podcast, said: "The idea of 'time running out' is most people's biggest fear,” and "A lot of people are envisioning what it would be like to be on the sub knowing they have less than 24 hours of oxygen if they're not rescued. We're also intrigued by adventurers and what risks they'll take in life.” Watching wealthy people do incredibly risky things and taking adventure sport to the extremes has become a new past time - be it conquering space or the depths of the ocean. And then there's the location, and the continuing fascination with one of the great shipwrecks. This tragedy adds another layer to the Titanic story. But for all that did this warrant the attention it received? Filmmaker James Cameron, who has dived more than 30 times to the Titanic wreck, was quick to point out that the search operation turned into a “prolonged and nightmarish charade” which added to the agony of the passengers' families. It's a good point, especially after the US Navy admitted they'd detected the implosion of the Titan submersible just hours after it entered the water. It's understandable to hold out hope. Hope fills the space between fact and fiction until the facts are confirmed- but sharing this information, even if it was just privately with the families, may have been the kindest thing to do. Considering the attention captured this week, it may only be a matter of time before this story inspires a film. I can only hope though that it's quite a long time before someone decides to make money from this sad tragedy. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EX50 - Governor Tom - From Acting to Music - An Honest Mix of Indy, Folk, Jazz and Blues GOVERNOR TOM - a singer-songwriter whose dynamic indie-folk, genre-bending style weaves truthiness and wit with unapologetic poignancy - is a pseudonym of Tom Wood, a musician-writer-actor who has co-starred in such films as The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals, Under Siege and Ulee's Gold. Currently, Tom has pursued his most revered goal of creating projects from scratch and distributing them to a worldwide audience. As Governor Tom, he brings songs of love and pain from a tale of music, money, family and politics. Singer-Songwriter Governor Tom's dynamic indie-folk, genre-bending style weaves truthiness and wit with unapologetic poignanc RELEASE OF "PUBLIC EYE" After the release of his naughty blues track “Architect of Love,” Governor Tom is back with “Public Eye,” the final track to be released as a single from his upcoming EP. Featuring two acoustic guitars, it introduces a grooving, pop/folk vibe. “That seems to be where my music is headed,” says Tom Wood, the creator of Governor Tom. “Public Eye” is an ode to the challenges of being a young starlet, “Any one of a tragic dozen,” Tom adds. “I believe it also reflects on what's happening to many young girls' mental health nowadays.” Tom is a multi-talented actor, writer, musician, and producer who co-starred in The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals, Under Siege, and more. He took a sabbatical from auditioning to fulfill a commitment to himself to create original works. After countless screenplays and a few development deals, nothing remained realized until 2020 when, as Governor Tom, he released his first single “A Man with a Hat,” followed in 2021 by the liberating, upbeat “Living Wild,” which was particularly well-received in the U.K. Music was always there for Tom, constantly challenging him to build and grow—learning piano from his grandmother, neighborhood “concerts” singing covers, teaching himself guitar, and numerous professional musicals and revues. When he realized that modern technology would help him bring his original creations to life, Tom went all in. One TV project that Tom has developed features the character of Governor Tom, who's the front man of a once- famous, one-hit-wonder glam-rock band. To promote the project, Tom dedicated himself to brushing up his guitar skills. When he returned to the instrument, something had changed. All his screenwriting had grown a new muscle in him. Instead of playing covers, Tom immediately began writing song after song without restraint. “There's a level of honesty I'm searching for through Governor Tom—honesty in storytelling, communicating, and performing—that I believe will only be attained through performing my own creations. Music does not lie.” “Public Eye” is about invasiveness. This invasiveness affects all of us—“regular” citizens are watched and monitored through “personal” devices. “It's a world of unimagined scrutiny” and “worthless, vindictive mockery” state the lyrics of “Public Eye.” “It's a none-too-subtle metaphor for the cruelty inflicted upon young girls through social media, and elsewhere, to serve the voyeurism of a culturally malnourished public,” Tom says. Still, it makes for some beautiful music. “I'm so proud of this piece,” Tom concludes. “It's the closest I've gotten so far to achieving the sound and style I've been working toward.” https://governortommusic.com/ Songs Featured: GOVERNOR TOM - A Man with a Hat GOVERNOR TOM - Living Wild GOVERNOR TOM - Architect of Love GOVERNOR TOM - Public Eye ___ https://truemediasolutions.ca/add-to-my-playlist
Throwback Trivia
Facebook and other social media have afforded us the wonderful privilege of knowing more about our friends than we ever really wanted to. "I just blew my nose. Thought you all should know." Best of all, we can share our "selfies"; pictures of me, taken by me. Because it's all about me, right? No! Well, at least it's not supposed to be. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I'd like to have A Word With You today about "The Lonely World of 'Selfies.'" One TV documentary said, "There is an epidemic of loneliness today." Well, that's true. Even in a world that, in one way, is more connected than ever. Superficially, but strangely lacking in the kind of deep human connection that satisfies our love-starved hearts. Life was never meant to be a "selfie" existence. Where it's all about how I look, what I'm doing, what I'm feeling, what I need. The problem is a world that's only as big as me is a world that's too small to live in. Years ago, a young man wrote to Mother Teresa with a pretty compelling question. This woman who had buried her life in the needs of the most broken in Calcutta's slums was clearly the one who would know the answer. He asked, "What can I do to have a significant life like you have?" Mother Teresa's postcard reply was only four words: "Find your own Calcutta." Or, "Find some people who need you and be there for them." You don't have to go to Calcutta to find them. They're in the local senior citizens' facility, or they may be kids struggling in school who could flourish if someone would take time to tutor them or mentor them. "Calcutta" may be those homeless people, or the unemployed, or the medically sidelined people down the block. In fact, you may not have to look any farther than the people you work with or play with or go to school with. On any given day, someone in your world needs a smile, or a hug, a compliment, a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or just to be noticed or included. It's a matter of recalibrating your radar to see the people for whom you could make a difference. But self-sacrifice is not without personal benefit. Because the fastest way to get out of your pit is to pull someone else out of theirs. And the best antidote for being lonely is to be there for someone else. So, turn your camera lens the other way to make your life a "youie" instead of a "selfie." where the other person is the picture; where your life mission is simple; make each person feel like they matter. In our word for today from the Word of God, in 2 Corinthians 5:15, God says, "Christ died for all that they should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and rose again." See, we're not supposed to live for ourselves anymore. Years ago, when I occasionally spoke for the New York Giants chapels, I had the privilege of meeting their defensive end, George Martin. A great football player, yes. In fact, he had a Super Bowl ring and all. But an even greater man, because he always made other people the big deal instead of himself. He spoke one year for our local high school football team. He had just been named the NFL's Man of the Year for his work with sick and dying children along with a bunch of charitable causes. It wasn't the only award he received for "finding his own Calcutta." He told our players, "You need to know the real reason I'm doing these things. I'm just copying my hero. My hero is Jesus Christ." He went on to explain how Jesus forgot about Himself to give us a chance to go to heaven someday and have a relationship with the God whose love we were made for. For that to happen, the wall between us and God had to come down. And it could only come down if the penalty for us running our own life was paid; a death penalty. The Bible says, "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Living forever instead of punishment forever; heaven instead of hell. The Bible says, "the Son of God loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). That's a love you need to experience for yourself. You can begin that relationship, a love relationship with Him, this very day. Just say, "Jesus, I'm yours." Go to our website. We can help you know how you can be sure you belong to Him. That website is ANewStory.com. Life is never the same once you've experienced for yourself the transforming love of Jesus Christ.

Today I share a story that I have not thought about in a long time. Ti's weird to think of a time when there was ONE TV in the house, and you couldn't fast forward through the commercials. My brother and I created a sport that we played during the commercials. This came to me after attending a storytelling event from Matthew Disk who is the author of one of my favorite books Storyworthy. He has an exercise where you list three random things you can touch. You then have one minute to come up with a story about one of those items, and then you two minutes to tell a story about it. The word that inspired this episode was pillow.

Get your air horn ready, because Season 2 of What the Kids Were Watching is finally here! Sarah and Raf are back on the couch, ready to discuss the films they watched ad nauseam as kids -- and, as usual, they have a lot to say about them. But the inaugural episode of the second season is more animated than usual, as the hosts find themselves drawn to talking about cartoons for the first time in the podcast. They tackle three animated features that were created to sell lines of toys: "The Care Bears Movie" (1985), "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer" (1985), and "My Little Pony: The Movie" (1986). The Care Bears -- who Sarah dubs "the NSA of goodness" -- use tricks like great Carole King songs and a genuinely creepy villain to win the hosts over. Raf remembers the Rainbow Brite film fondly, but Sarah can't get over how the titular character is "pretty, but kind of useless." Then there's the My Little Pony movie, which -- according to our hosts -- made "The Care Bears Movie" look like "Citizen Kane."However, in an extra-special bonus, the hosts also talk about a half-hour TV special that's better and more fascinating than any of the three feature-length films: "My Little Pony: Rescue at Midnight Castle." "It's like My Little Pony meets Dungeons and Dragons," says Raf, while Sarah adds, "It's like a Rush song come to life." It's a weird, wild little cartoon that's more Dethklok than dainty -- and the hosts are here for it.

Rocco Buonvino, artist, concert impresario and event organiser talks to Passions. With over 20 years in the music industry, artist and concert impresario, Rocco Buonvino has been at the forefront of staging some of the biggest entertainment events, from sold-out concerts to musical theatre productions and bespoke events with world superstars. Over two years until his untimely death in May 2012, Rocco looked after some of Robin Gibb's activities including the completion of his first classical work "The Requiem for Titanic 2012 Concert", with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Westminster Central Hall. Early in 2010 Rocco staged his own very first classical production, The Beatles Philharmonic Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, a spectacular orchestral concert of pure classical interpretations to celebrate the music of the World's Greatest Legendary Band, The Beatles. Special star performers included Dame Shirley Bassey, Beverly Knight, Tony Christie, Susan Black to name a few. Again, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alan Chircop and orchestral arrangements by Wayne Grima. Other musical credits include The Soldiers Charity Concert at the London Palladium, promoting and staging of shows for world-renowned artists such as Sir Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, The Chemical Brothers, Duran Duran. Each year Rocco co-stages the Malta Music Awards where he brought and orchestrated Peter Andre and his ITV team in 2013, Peter receiving several awards. Rocco did the same with Robin Gibb and Billy Ocean to name but a few. Rocco produced and directed his first live TV show, called Let's Talk Music, a highly successful award winning weekly music debate show on ONE TV in Malta. In June 2013 Rocco brought Hollywood icon Al Pacino with his acclaimed event, An Evening with Pacino to the UK for the very first time, for one unmissable night at the London Palladium. A unique event, a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal and share private moments with one of the greatest actors of his generation. The evening included an on-stage interview projected on large screen as well as giving audience members a rare chance to speak to Pacino in an audience Q&A session. More recently Rocco has been active in the world of TV producing a range of programmes broadcasting on the Sky TV platform.

One TV show we're currently obsessed with is Ted Lasso (on Apple TV+), which feels like the perfect show for these stressful times.
Richard and Adam are joined by Sabah Kalim, a returning guest who recently finished 1L at Osgoode Hall Law School. Sabah contemplates whether she’s now a 2L or not; Adam compares the switchover to a birthday. Paper Chase is nominated as her favourite movie (which takes Richard aback given its age); she relates how first class in Criminal law students were “cold-called” upon just like in the movie; Sabah admits she wouldn’t have known the facts of the case so is glad she wasn’t the chosen one. The group discusses the pandemic and how it will change law school; Adam talks about double uncertainty for the process of finding a job; Richard doesn’t know what he’s talking about but Sabah seems to understand. They chat about online examinations. Richard talks about redesigning his course (which he doesn’t want to be held accountable for, since his thoughts were expressed in early May!) Sabah talks about her varsity athletic career and how she viewed that as a law student; Adam has only used the term “varsity” three times in his life. Sabah admits that her extracurriculars at law school included being on Angelica’s 22 Minute Workout on One TV. Adam tasks Sabah with developing a workout routine for the podcast Music Attribution: What's Love Got to Do with It (Symphonic Version)by Tina Turner Buy now: https://VA.lnk.to/80sSymphonic

Get ready, because ReWatchable is back! We’re tackling the cancelled-too-soon series Pitch! Here is your cast of superfans and newbies for Pitch: Superfans: Danielle, Ariana Newbies: Brittany, Kendra, Natalie Let’s get started: – What’s ReWatchable? – The rules: 1. One TV episode per podcast episode 2. Two newbies and two superfans (hopefully!) 3. NO SPOILERS! 4. Please give us feedback and share the love! Meet the hosts: – Danielle is our lead host and superfan who started on Veronica Mars and has been on most rounds with a few gaps. She has taken to home life well and has a few plants that she has named. She has visited Ariana and they discovered their fates are written in the stars… literally. She is working from home now (like most of the world) and wants a cat! One thing making her happy is the career trajectory of Hayley Williams from Paramore has some great solo music that she is vibing with! – Natalie is experiencing her second show as a newbie, previously she was a newbie on Sense8. She was a host on Avatar and Agent Carter. For older listeners, Natalie is FINALLY in her house that she has been renovating! Since the last time she was on she has been to Israel and had a family dinner 15 years in the making to celebrate her grandmother’s 90th birthday. One thing currently making her happy is finding a way back to reading physical books in these trying times. – Kendra is our newest addition joining us from Agent Carter forward. Since we last heard from her, she has learned to ski, but has also discovered that she likes ski-life, but not the sport exactly. However, not to brag, but she made it down one full run without falling so look out for her in 2022. But perhaps she will try out dentistry instead if her career as a professional Harry Potter Lego player for Nintendo Switch doesn’t pan out. Her dogs are really happy that the humans are in isolation! – Ariana is FINALLY a superfan! You may recognize her from… every show (except Firefly). Since we recorded last, Brittany and Ariana met in real life, she also hung out with Danielle and they watched a lot of Baby Daddy. While Danielle was in town, they went on an Agent Carter-themed tour of Los Angeles. Ariana has a rescue cat and recommends that you consider fostering an animal! – Brittany is still a newbie (4lyfe) and returns after last appearing on Agent Carter. She previously hosted two shows no one wants to talk about, but jokes on you because Pushing Daisies taught us how to live during this pandemic — don’t touch anyone or anything. Since her last appearance she has forgotten how to do shownotes, but also got to meet Ariana and attend the Angel reunion at NYCC! One thing making her happy is all of the Broadway stars performing on social platforms during quarantine! What do we know? – It’s about sports! – It was impossible to access in Australia when it aired – But sometimes if you don’t tune in right away things disappear! – Ariana went to the Paley Fest panel for Pitch and really connected to the series at a time when she needed to be connected to the something with passion (Fall 2016) – What are the stakes that come with being the person who everyone is hanging their hopes on? – A lot can change in 4 years, but hopefully it will hold up! WHO KNOWS MAYBE WE WILL ALSO WATCH A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN! Listener Feedback: – Look, we know we’ve been gone for a while, but we are back and that’s all that matters! Contact us! Susan Rice has been called a lot of names. She was nicknamed "Spo" as a child, for her sporting athletic abilities. President Barack Obama labeled her one of three "Furies" on his national security team. One TV commentator called her "the right's favorite chew-toy," following her now infamous round of TV talk shows days after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Just this weekend, President Donald Trump tweeted that Rice was a "disaster" for her role in the Obama administration's Syria policy. And, as we learn in her new autobiography, Tough Love: My Story of the Things Worth Fighting For , she has been called worse.

Welcome to episode number 95 of ChiroCandy. On this episode, we're going to talk about 7 reasons to write a book. Before I get into that, I want to go over a couple of key things that I learned from this year, some takeaways that I have from this year. I hope that you guys do the same thing with your practice, your business, your relationships, your spiritual life, your physical life, all these different areas. What are some takeaways that you have for this year and what are some things that you want to do different? Takeaways For 2016 For those of you new to the show, we started ChiroCandy back in May of 2015. I have a background in ministry but also in sales and marketing. I was a sales manager for a long time but I spent 17 years in the precious metals industry, (Rare coins, gold, silver, things like that). About eight years into that, I left that industry, went to work for a chiropractor for a few years and that's whenever I really "drank the Kool-Aid," if you will. I just really fell in love with the profession but I wasn't making as much money as I did in the coin business. Ended up going back into coins. After awhile I was so tired of working for somebody else, building somebody else's dream and having somebody else tell me when and where I needed to be here and be there. It was just time for something else. We started ChiroCandy. I didn't even know how we were going to monetize it. I just wanted to give value. 1. Value Pays: One of my big takeaways for 2016 is value pays. I talk a lot about that in the different episodes. Episode 67, where I talk about this sales process. How the more and more value you give, the more you're going to "sell". It's like whatever product or service you offer, there's a scale. Their money, whatever you're charging for that service, is on one side. Your product or service is on the other. Well the more value you add then it ... Once you get it to outweigh whatever you're charging, the sales mate. My goal was just to give value. Not charge anything. I just wanted to give value. I can say that 2016 being my first year, 100% full-time just doing this, we were able to collect more money than I ever did in 17 years in the coin business. Now my wife stays home. She helps me out. I've got a son in college. He's going to bible school right now. He's learning how to do a lot of this stuff. Really there's three main ways that we monetize ChiroCandy. It's through affiliate marketing, the Facebook marketing that I do for doctors out there and then the ghost writing that we do. We help docs. We sit down with them, come up with a really tight outline. It's all their content. We just do all the hard work. We do all the heavy lifting and then we get it professionally designed, edited and it's listed on Amazon. Then you get to use it for publicity, all kinds of things for your practice. That's really what we're going to get into for this episode. Value pays. That was one of my big takeaways from this year is when you come at whatever you're doing from value, you're going to be okay. As long as you have ways to monetize in the backing it, but just be concerned with giving value. Everything else will work out. It's been a great year. We look for bigger things to come. 2. Consistency: Another takeaway I have is consistency. I release a podcast every Tuesday, 5:00 a.m. Central Standard Time. I don't know. It may go unappreciated by a lot of the listeners. It really doesn't matter. It's important to me to make sure for those of you ... There's a lot of docs out there that listen to the show. We get thousands of downloads every week. Last I checked, we're in well over 90 countries across the world. For those of you who look forward to, "Hey, tomorrow a new show comes out. I want to listen to it at the gym." I know there's podcasts out there that I do that with. If a podcast comes out let's say Tuesday, one of the marketing shows I listen to, if I know it's coming out on Tuesday, I'll wait to make sure it comes out before I go to the gym because I want to listen to it at the gym or whatever it may be. I found that just being consistent, it holds ... I think it builds credibility for me and for what I do. I don't know why I'm saying that's one of my takeaways. I feel that it's paid off. I feel that being consistent every week with the show helps hold me accountable to deliver value. Maybe that's it. Maybe that's where I'm going with this. 3. Ready, Fire, Aim: Then a third takeaway I have is ready, fire, aim. There's been some things we've done this year that haven't worked out real well as far as from a marketing standpoint to produce income for the show or income for our family, stuff like that. There's been some things that have just really been home runs. There's a book by Michael Masterson called Ready, Fire, Aim. Too often people get so caught up in waiting to make sure everything is perfect before you go for it. Sometimes you've just got to go for it. Just get out there, fire and then aim along the way. The book by Maxwell Maltz called Psycho-Cybernetics came out back in the 50s I think. He talks about how we're all created with this internal guidance system. It's almost like a heat-seeking missile that we correct ourselves along the way. It's just the way God created us. There's a lot of truth in that. That was another takeaway for this year is you just get out there and you do it and you go. Then it all works out. Well we've been married almost 21 years now. The majority of that time, I've been straight commission, especially in the coin business. Now when I was manager, I did have an override that I knew was coming in but for the most part, the income has been consistent but not always ... Just like you guys. Owning a business, it's different. I think that's really helped me a lot starting this business. It's going to help me grow the business because there are times like, "Ugh. I don't know where it's going to come from next month." We just keep doing what we're doing and next thing you know, we're having a better month than we did last month and then another better month than that month. They just continue just to grow. It's just getting out there and putting stuff to work. Proverbs 14:23 says, "All hard work brings a profit but mere talk leads to poverty." Sometimes you've just got to get out there and do it. Then if it doesn't work, tweak it and try it again. 4. Think Bigger. Dream Bigger: Then the fourth thing is just think bigger and dream bigger. We had some guest speakers come and do this thing at our church here a couple months back. That was one of the big things they talked about. It was one of the big takeaways I had from this weekend thing that we did was not to limit myself, not to limit my thinking, but think bigger, dream bigger and do bigger. That's one of our big things we want to do for 2017 is just really how can we get out there and help impact more doctors and help you guys impact more people in your community to help you build that dream practice? I see this all the time. Whatever your dream practice looks like in your mind, there are people out there that have built it. What can I do to help guide you? I'm not an expert in any of this. I do feel that I'm good at marketing but I'm not a doctor. I'm not a chiropractor. I've never built a clinic but my goal is to help provide value and get guys on the show that can help you do that. Anyway, there's eight minutes, almost nine minutes into the show. There's some takeaways for this year for me and hopefully you can apply that to your business and what's coming up for 2017. Let's get into the core of what we want to talk about for this podcast... 7 Reasons To Write A Book. I'm very passionate about this. I've written four books and book number five is actually almost done. It's done. We've been going through the editing process on it. I started it last year. This one has taken me a year but the funny thing is is my Instant Influencer Course, which walks you through how to write a book, I brag about how you can write a book in as little as three weeks. I've done that. My other books I've written in as little as three weeks from the idea in my head to my book in my hand, as little as three weeks. This one was different. I just had different goals for the book but also this year, because of things that would happen ... New clients that would come in, speaking engagements that I would have, just being busy, the book wasn't a priority. I've been still doing a little bit every month and every month to get it to where it is. Now we are at the point where hopefully in the next month or two it's going to be released. I'm really expecting some big things. I'm really excited about that. 1. Authority That's one of the reasons that I wanted to talk about this today. The first reason you should write a book is the authority that it gives you. There's a reason that the root word of 'authority' is author. People automatically look at you different when they realize you've written a book. That's number one. 2. Branding Number two is branding. It really ties into the authority. You can use it in all of your marketing messages, all kinds of things. It really helps shape who you are, your clinic, when you want it to. Now some docs write a book and it's just something they have on their shelves. They use it a little bit. If you do it right, it can really help with your branding, their image, especially making an impact in your area, which leads us to number three is publicity. 3. Publicity Whenever you have a book, it becomes easier to get free publicity in your local area. Whenever you have your book done, you should plan out a publicity campaign where you do what you can to get on the local talk radio. Have articles written in the local newspaper. If your area has a local magazine that comes out, reach out to them. They're always looking for good content. The local TV news station, they're always looking for good quality content and whenever you are an author and you have that authority, it also helps them want to say yes to you, to bring you in front of their audience, knowing that you're going to deliver good quality content. It's huge. One TV appearance on a local news show ... One of my docs did this on the morning news show and had over $6,000 in business just from a little ... It was a three-minute spot on the news one day. Another one of my clients, we helped do a book and he had 60 phone calls that afternoon after his spot aired. His clinic, you're looking at anywhere between ... The different programs and stuff that he offers, he profit-wise collects ... It's all cash. No insurance. Anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 per case. It had 60 people call after that. He was able to do that. It was easier for him whenever he was an author. They had their book on TV. He's showing the book and they're talking about the book and then talking about his practice and what he's doing. It's a huge opportunity for that. 4. Share Your Message Reason number four is you get to share your message. You guys have a message. I don't know if there's another industry that's as passionate about what it is they do as chiropractors are. This gives you a platform to share that message. 5. Patient Education Reason number five is patient education. Typically whenever you're seeing these patients, you're only spending ... What? Three to five minutes with them at a time? Sometimes longer. After your day one and day two and you're just doing your adjustments, you don't have that much time. For you to get all this philosophy that you have to teach that to these patients, it takes more than that. When you have a book, you can say, "Hey, Ms. Jones. Look, I want you to do this. In chapter three of my book, it talks about the benefits of drinking water," or whatever it may be. "Before you come in next time, read that chapter. There's some things that I want to talk to you about." You can use it as for patient education. 6. Legacy The sixth reason is to leave a legacy. When you have a book that you've written, nobody can ever take that away. It's there always. I recently lost my grandfather. This was just here within the past month, six weeks. Even his grandfather ... I'm sorry, his dad. I heard all these stories about how he was just such a great man and was real involved in church and all these things that he did. They have a building named after him. I always thought, "You know what? If he had written a book, I would love to read it." That's one of the reasons I wrote ABCs of a Leader is I wanted it to be something not for ... To be on Amazon, for everybody to buy and all this. I wanted it to be these key fundamental principles that I feel make people successful that my grandkids could read about, that my great grandkids could say, "Well you know what? Your great great grandfather, here's one of the books that he read and this is the philosophy that made him who he is." It's leaving that legacy is the sixth reason. Let's go over these real quick. Let's recap and then we have one more. 1. Authority 2. Branding 3. Publicity 4. Sharing your message 5. Patient Education 6. Legacy 7. Who You Will Become Number seven is because who you'll become in the process. The late Jim Rohn talks about this... He says his mentor told him, "You should have a goal to become a millionaire not for the money, but because of who you have to become in the process to be able to earn that." I think it's the same type thing. Once you've done work ... Even though as far as my side of things, we try to make it as easy for you as possible. It's still being able to say, "I'm an author." There was a guy that we used to go to church with. I knew him for years but we knew each other at church. Really not anything outside of that. This was really before Facebook so he didn't ... It's not like he was getting on social media and would see me and knew that I was an author. We were at worship practice one day. Something was said about one of my books. He stopped and he said, "Wait, you've written a book?" I said, "Yeah." At the time I had written, I don't know, maybe three of them. He started treating me different. He started talking to me different. It was funny but I bring that point up because that's what happens. When you have a book, people look at you differently. Anyway, those are seven reasons why you should write a book. I really encourage you to make that ... Put that on your list for 2017 as a goal. Whether it takes you a year, whether you want help ... We can help you do it pretty quick. Or even as just something that you sit down and make that a long-term goal, whatever it may be, I really think there's a ... I know that you have a book inside of you. You have a message to share. Share it. Do what you can to share it. That's going to be it for this episode. We'll stop right there. I hope you guys have had a great year. If you were interested in finding out more about writing a book, the different programs that I offer, whether it's being able to get you into our course that shows you how to do it yourself or actually sitting down and talking to us about us doing the work for you. We actually just finished a project for a doc who ... He and his pastor, they wrote their book and then came to me to help go through and edit it, to lay everything out, do all the interior design, the book cover design. We did the website for him. We got it listed on Amazon and all that. Even if that's where you are, I'd love to help you any way that I can. Work With Billy You can go to either workwithbilly.com or you can simply go to chirocandy.com/schedule. September_15th_2010.mp3 Record Highs Once again Gold bugs have infested the air waves. A record high was set yesterday at $1,276.50 an ounce, 7/10 of a percent above the last high in June. Should you buy or sell? Gold (click for larger picture) Gold bugs are on the march again recommending holding gold as a core position in ones portfolio of investments. Gold is touted as the global currency and store of value in uncertain times. A historic peak in 1980 was $887.50 which fell 71% to lows set in 1999 of 253.70. Over the last 11 years it has risen a whopping 503% and was a great trade. But is it a good investment at $1270 an ounce today? It took 27 years to return to levels of 1980. In order to assess a current position one needs to determine upside potential and downside risk. Carefully choose investments based on their merit and not by recent popularity. Is there a dividend on gold? Is demand and supply in balance? One TV infomercial suggests you buy gold coins, another suggests you mail your gold jewelry in for cash. Even at current levels the holder of gold in 1980 has received a negligible return over 30 years. There are many opportunities to make money but it requires action on your part, each stock selected must show risk/reward of at least 2:1.
