What's the delay in celebrating Pat LaFontaine's career? What about the player he was traded for, fellow Hall-of-Famer Pierre Turgeon? Does Ziggy Palffy's stardom during the franchise's dark days warrant consideration, and did Josh Bailey do enough, long enough, to be a clear Islanders Hall-of-Famer?Chris has ideas on how Hall-of-Fame nights can be re-imagined and how to honor the remaining “core of the four” that don't have their own plaques. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-out RBI single in the third inning of his final home opener to put Detroit up 3-1. The Red Sox scored a run in the third and fourth before surging into the lead with a four-run sixth. Boston was swept at home earlier in the week by Pittsburgh. Chris Sale gave up three runs and four hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings. Detroit catcher Jake Rogers fired up fans — bundled up on a chilly afternoon — by turning on an inside pitch and sending it 414 feet to left to put Detroit up 2-0 in the second.  The Tigers, though, missed many chances to score more runs by leaving eight runners on base. Henri Jokiharju, Zemgus Girgensons and Jordan Greenway also scored for the Sabres, and Devon Levi made 26 saves. Alex Tuch and Jack Quinn scored in the shootout. Thompson is the first Sabres player to reach 45 or more goals in a single season since Alexander Mogilny (76) and Pat LaFontaine (53) did so in 1992-93. Austin Czarnik, Dylan Larkin, Alex Chiasson, Simon Edvinsson, Jonatan Berggren and David Perron scored in regulation for the Red Wings. Lucas Raymond scored the only shootout goal for Detroit. Quinnipiac, which set a program record for wins, advances to its third national title game in program history against Minnesota on Saturday. The Bobcats seek their first title after losing in 2013 and '16. Both of Quillan's goals came in the first period. He opened the scoring with 14:41 left on a bank shot from behind the net that went off goaltender Erik Portillo. Quillan added another on a breakaway at 8:39 for his 18th goal of the season. Michigan was seeking its 10th NCAA championship. Golf – The Masters – Koepka living large at Masters, leads with Rahm and Hovland Brooks Koepka is in a three-way share of the lead at the Masters with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland. Koepka is trying to regain his reputation as a major player. Right now he gets attention as a surprise defector to Saudi-based LIV Golf. All he cares about his having healthy legs. He opened with a 65. Rahm was even more spectacular in his round of 65. That’s because he four-putted for double bogey on the first hole. He followed with seven birdies and an eagle. Hovland played bogey-free. Tiger Woods limped his way to a 74 and was nine back. Golf – The Masters – Tiger Woods’ painful Masters walk results in opening 74 Tiger Woods had three birdies and five bogeys during an opening round of 74 at the Masters on Thursday, leaving him in contention to play the weekend but hardly to win the tournament. He had two tough lip-outs on the front nine, a couple of poor pitch shots that led to bogeys, and some bad luck at the 18th led to his final bogey. It was the worst opening round for Woods at the Masters since 2005, when he followed another 74 with 65-66-71 to capture the fourth of his five green jackets. But he’s hardly the same player these days. He is now a combined 16 over for his last four rounds at Augusta National. NCAAWBKB – Champion LSU women accepting Biden invitation to White House LSU's national champion women's basketball team will accept an invitation from President Joe Biden to visit the White House. University spokesman Michael Bonnette confirmed LSU's intentions on the matter on Thursday, a day after Tigers star forward Angel Reese suggested during a podcast interview that her team should celebrate their title with former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama rather than President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden. Reese made the suggestion after saying she was not inclined to accept an apology from Jill Biden for suggesting that both LSU and runner-up Iowa be invited to the White House. President Biden did not follow through on that idea, inviting only LSU and men's national champion Connecticut. US would bar full ban on trans athletes but allow exceptions A new rule proposed by the Biden administration would prevent schools and colleges from enacting outright bans on transgender athletes, but it would allow certain exceptions to promote fairness or reduce injuries. The proposal sends a political counterpunch toward a wave of Republican-led states that have sought to ban trans athletes from competing in school sports. If finalized, it would become enshrined as a provision of Title IX, the landmark gender equity legislation enacted in 1972. It must undergo a lengthy approval process, however, and it's almost certain to face challenges from opponents. Joe Tilley's Great Canadian Sports Show | EP 108 | GERRY MEEHAN Gerry Meehan is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger and the former general manager and Senior Vice President of the Buffalo Sabres. Meehan was born in Toronto, Ontario and raised in Newmarket, Ontario. He played minor hockey for St. Michael's College School and junior for the Toronto Marlboros. He played for the 1966–67 Marlboros that won the Memorial Cup. Meehan was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1963 NHL Amateur Draft, fourth round, 21st overall. He played for the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, Atlanta Flames, Washington Capitals, as well as the Ontario Hockey Association's Toronto Marlboros, American Hockey League's Rochester Americans, CPHL's Tulsa Oilers, Western Hockey League's Phoenix Roadrunners, Seattle Totems, and the World Hockey Association's Cincinnati Stingers. He served as captain for both the Sabres and Capitals. One of Meehan's career highlights as a Sabre remains a lowlight to Flyers fans. In the last game of the 1971–72 regular season, the Flyers needed a win or a tie against the Sabres to beat out the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final playoff spot. The score was tied, but with just four seconds on the clock, Meehan took a shot from 80 feet (24 m) away that somehow got by Flyers goalie Doug Favell – ending the Flyers' season. In 1984, the team made Meehan the first former Sabre to serve in a front-office position, as assistant general manager under Bowman. During the 1986–87 season, Bowman stepped down, and Meehan was promoted to general manager. With the departures of Bowman and superstar Gilbert Perreault, the Sabres finished the season in last place overall that year, but rebounded the next year as NHL's most improved team, with a record of 37–32–11 – and 21 points higher in the standings. Meehan's years as a general manager were marked by the addition of a number of top-caliber players, including No. 1 draft pick Pierre Turgeon, Soviet defector Alex Mogilny, Dale Hawerchuk, Pat LaFontaine, and Dominik Hašek. In 1993, Meehan was named the executive vice president of sports operations, taking a more active role in the organization's business and legal affairs. In 1996, Gerry left the Sabres organization and founded GMM Consulting Services, now Cardinal Consultants Ltd., which provides a wide variety of consulting services to sports teams, leagues, associations, and athletes. Brad May played hard. He loved the battle areas - in front of the net, in the corners, and at the lines. Every time May had the opportunity to use his will against his opponent he would rise to the challenge. Many times in Brad's 1000 game career, that challenge also meant dropping the gloves. Brad it loved every time. Many players will say (even the heavyweight enforcers), that they didn't like to fight. That it messed with their heads and the anxiety it caused was mentally exhausting. Brad doesn't feel that way - he LOVED it. In fact he says that is one of the things he misses most about not playing - he can't fight. However, May was much more than a fighter. He was a great teammate, always a fan favorite and an ambassador of the game where ever he played. He also scored some big goals.Brad May scored 131 goals in his career, but none was more memorable for hockey fans than the one scored on April 24th, 1993. May was playing for the Buffalo Sabres and they were deadlocked in overtime against the heavily favored Boston Bruins. It was the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and the Sabres had miraculously won the first 3 games. They needed one more to end it. They couldn't give the Bruins any life. And Brad May ended any hopes of a comeback. May received a pass cutting through the neutral zone from Sabre legend, Pat LaFontaine. Brad beat Bruins Hall of Famer, Ray Bourque 1 on 1, put a sick move on the tender, Andy Moog, and ended it.The goal was beautiful and important, but the call by Rick Jeanneret was what made it even more special. Jeanneret screamed "Mayday!" again and again after Brad scored and the entire scene will be forever etched in our minds. And with one goal, "Mayday" become his nickname for life. Mayday is a very charismatic guy with tons of stories. We revisit the famous goal, but we also talk about his humble beginnings to first round draft pick, the grind of establishing himself as an NHL regular, and the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007.

Host Rob Kowal begins by asking Mikko about about being a part of the Islanders team that came back from a 3-1 series deficit against the Washington Capitals in the first round of the 1987 Stanley Cup playoffs in the old Patrick Division. Mikko recalled the ‘Easter Epic’ game 7 that went into quadruple overtime, and what it was like when Pat LaFontaine scored the winning goal. Mikko also tells a story about unfortunate fate of the Washington trainer that brought fruit into the Islanders locker room during the overtime intermissions. Mikko also talks about playing with Mike Bossy during his last season with the team, and how Bossy and Bryan Trottier helped him and other young players on the team with their game. Mikko also tells a story about an unfortunate albeit minor accident that occurred after practice at the old Cantiague Park rink, when he and LaFontaine would sometimes race home to Northport where they both lived at the time. Playing 5 years for the Islanders, Mikko talks about how much he loved playing on Long Island, and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding a story written that unfairly put him in a bad light before later getting traded to Los Angeles Kings in 1989-90 season for Ken Baumgartner and Hubie McDonough. Mikko then talks about his trade to the Buffalo Sabres, and later playing in the World Championships and the Olympics, before playing a few seasons in back in Europe and eventually closing out his NHL career in Boston in 1994-95. Living now in Lethbridge, Alberta, Mikko talks about how he started Mikko Makela Hockey, a year round training program in Lethbridge, how he ended up as head coach of the https://lethbridgehurricanes.com (Lethbridge Hurricanes) in the Western Hockey League- the first European head coach in Canadian Junior Hockey, and how he got involved in the https://www.jwhl.org/page/show/604089-warner-school-ab- (Warner Hockey School).

Originally aired October 7th, 2007 on WGBB's NEW YORK HOCKEY TALK. NY Hockey Talk host Rob Kowal talks with former New York Islanders center Pierre Turgeon in October 2007, just a month after his retirement. Turgeon begins by talking about representing Canada in the Little League World Series as as 12 year old back in 1982. Pierre then talks about breaking in to the National Hockey League just 6 years later with the Buffalo Sabres. He talked about the expectations that went along with being a #1 draft pick, and some of the players and coaches on the Sabres that helped him adapt and adjust to the differences between playing in juniors compared to the NHL. Pierre also talked about the pressure on top picks today compared to when he played, considering the increased media scrutiny today. Pierre recalled what he felt when he was dealt to the Islanders in 1991 along with Uwe Krupp, Benoit Hogue and Dave McLlwain for Pat LaFontaine, Randy Wood and Randy Hillier. Pierre reminisced how much enjoyed playing on Long Island, and the tremendous amount he learned playing for Islanders head coach Al Arbour. Rob and Pierre also discussed the Islanders run to the Conference Finals in 1992-93, and the hit he took in the semi-finals from the Capitals Dale Hunter. Turgeon talks about getting traded to the Canadiens, being named their captain, and being a part of the team during the closing of the Montreal Forum and the opening of the Molson Centre. Pierre talks about what it's like getting traded, and the different cities he played in during his 19 year career. He also talked about the most talented guy he played with, and which player he had the best chemistry with during his long career. He was also quick to answer a question about who he considers to be his funniest teammate over the years. Pierre closed things out talking about some of what he plans to do in retirement.

The inspiring Yanic Duplessis joins the broadcast as the youngest guest ever on Hockey 2 Hell And Back ! Live Sunday January 24, 2021 7PM EST Yanic Duplessis, a 17-year-old elite hockey player in Canada, has come out publicly as gay. “I just want to share my story, so if someone is going through the same thing I did, I want to help, even if it’s only one person that reads this,” he said in an interview with Craig Eagles of the “Out in the Open” podcast. His story is familiar to any young person dealing with their sexuality, with the added pressure of being a talented hockey player drafted by two junior leagues, stepping stones to playing higher-level hockey, including the NHL. “It was a struggle for me, and it shouldn’t be,” Duplessis said. “I felt like an outcast.” Duplessis was outed this June when a friend he confided in about being gay spread the news at a party he was not even at. He got a call from a former teammate who asked him if the rumor was true and panicked about how he would be received. He soon got his answer. “Honestly, a lot of friends and teammates have called me,” he said on the podcast. “One teammate actually came over to my house to check on me. It was the first day he found out. He came over to make sure that I knew that he accepted me and supported me. “We talked a lot and he started crying because he knew I was going through a very tough time and that I was doing it alone. ... I will never forget that.” Like a lot of teenagers coming to grips with their sexual orientation, Duplessis felt isolated, depressed, anxious and constantly afraid his secret would come out. “It eats you up inside,” he told the CBC. Duplessis’ coming out journey was aided by parents, Diane Dandurand and Andre Duplessis, who were worried when his grades suddenly dropped. “My mom would always come to pick me up from school when I wasn’t feeling well,” said Dupkessis, who lives in Saint-Antoine, New Brunswick, in Canada’s Maritime provinces. “Both my parents were starting to get really worried, especially my mom. She called the school and cried when she spoke to the principal.” “My principal spoke to me asking what was wrong, he referred me to the school’s psychologist. No one knew what was wrong with me, but they all knew something was wrong.” He finally couldn’t take it any more and came out to his parents. “My parents automatically said that they loved me no matter what and that they accepted me,” he said. The 5-10, 190-pound Duplessis still couldn’t bring himself to come out to his teammates (he was playing for a high-level midget team) despite being drafted by the two junior leagues and being a star player. “I was terrified that the wrong person would out me, especially when I wasn’t ready to say anything,” he said. “I was scared of being rejected and judged. “I was scared that my teammates would be afraid to be around me or them thinking I would go after them. They were like brothers to me and I never looked at them that way.” Part of what scared him was the culture of a hockey locker room, where he was so nervous about being found out that he avoided showering with the rest of the team. RELATED Conversation: The current state of LGBTQ acceptance and homophobia in men’s hockey “I’m not saying hockey players aren’t nice, because they are, but in the dressing room between the boys, and I certainly don’t want to offend anyone, but in the room people say some things to be cool or whatever,” he said. “They would say things about being gay or something and laugh at it. I would do the same thing, because I wanted to blend in.” Duplessis was drafted in 2019 by the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, which counts among its alumi such NHL stars as Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur, Ray Bourque, Pat LaFontaine, Mike Bossy, Denis Savard, Michel Goulet, Luc Robitaille and Patrick Roy. For now, though, he wants to play close to home this fall for his high school team before starting his junior hockey career. He wants time to process all he’s been through before jumping up a level in the sport he has been passionate about since he was a young boy. Asked for what advice he would give a future teammate about how to act in the locker room around someone who is gay, Duplessis was direct. “Be careful what you say, watch what you say in the room. It’s just not about being gay, it could be about anything that could trigger something. “Just be careful what you talk about in the room.” Yanic Duplessis can be followed on Instagram. Following the “Out in the Open” podcast, he was also interviewed by the CBC.

As I wrote on my blog, Islesblogger this week - Jack Foley, AKA Super Jack got the chance to meet his idol Robin Lehner. If you haven't seen the post please give it a quick read. I also got to spend a good chunk of the game on Monday night with Jack and his family too. It's a night I won't ever forget. Here's the Tweet heard round the world, the one that caused everything to happen the way it did. It currently has almost 4,000 retweets and over 14,000 likes! https://twitter.com/lkieferfoley/status/1112458180708179968 Episode 30 is a little different and a departure from the normal content you'll find here. We talk about some of the health issues Jack has been through in his young life and some other topics that will make people listen with a tilted head. I've been drawn to Jack and his family since I first heard his story. As you can see from the sign, Jack has experienced a host of medical problems during his young life. He's had THREE open heart surgeries to help with being born with HALF A HEART! He's beat every single set of odds and blown through all the expectations Doctors had set for him. He is truly an amazing young man - and I am happy to call him a friend now. It's about Fate, too. In my post on Islesblogger, I talk about Fate. I really feel like fate has brought us together - we go into that in the podcast. You may not believe in fate, and that's ok. Prior to recording, Super Jack made his Mom and I wait while he finished up a game of NHL19. His Mom told me afterwards that he played with Islanders great Pat LaFontaine - because of his work with the Companions in Courage Foundation (CiC). I happen to be a big Patty La fan (and a gamer) so he got a pass. Jack and I talked about the reasons why he picked Robin Lehner and about this huge hug from the big man: https://twitter.com/RobinLehner/status/1112919085820542976 He talks like someone much older than he is - and probably understand why at this point. He did tell me though that his likes Robin because he's gone through a lot in his hockey career, like he has gone through in his short life. It's a remarkable story the way things turned out. Jack not only got a stick from Robin, he got one from Thomas Greiss as well. He met a large group of players - Jack proudly listed them off as Scott Mayfield, Johnny Boychuk, Josh Bailey, Mat Barzal, and Anthony Beauvillier. He was really treated like royalty, His Mom, Lauren even told me that Boychuk remembered him from a previous meeting and seemed more excited to see HIM than Jack was to see the player. Lauren also told me that Jack will be attending the Matt Martin Hockey Camp this summer, so that's something else exciting for him to experience in the coming months. We made plans to hit the ice together as well - something I know I am really looking forward to. How's Jack handling the fame? I asked Jack if his new fame was causing him extra attention at school. He said everyone was asking him questions and wanted him to give them shoutouts when he was on Channel 7 News on Tuesday night. He didn't get the chance to give shoutouts, but we made sure he gave plenty during the podcast. We also talked about the Islanders season and the stretch run to the playoffs and who he thinks the Islanders will face and what he thinks they can do. It's a great little interview and I told him he can come back as my co-host whenever he wants. The goal for Jack, his real dream - is to become a New York Islander for a day. It's something that I know I won't stop pushing for either. Jack may not be able to play hockey forever, he may eventually even need a heart transplant. But for now, he enjoys playing as much as he loves watching his favorite team. We'll be back with another two episodes where we talk Islanders hockey over the next two days. Tonight Roger Luce the long time arena announcer for the Islanders (and WBAB Morning Show Radio Host) comes on to talk about some hockey and o...
