Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/653 Presented By: Waters West, Jackson Hole Fly Company, Angler's Coffee, Visit Helena, MT Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors    In this episode, Ronan Creane, a renowned fly fishing guide with deep ties to Ireland, is here to talk all about fly fishing New Zealand. Ronan specializes in sight fishing for brown trout and has been a passionate fly angler for decades, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. If you've ever dreamt of casting your line in the pristine waters of New Zealand, this episode is a must-listen. Ronan takes us on an in-depth journey through the best fishing spots, the ideal times to visit, and expert tips on sight fishing for those elusive big browns. You'll also learn why a trip to New Zealand might be more attainable than you think, and how to make the most of your adventure without suffering from jet lag. Episode Chapters with Ronan Creane on Fly Fishing New Zealand 2:04 - Ronan shares his background, explaining he grew up in Ireland and moved to New Zealand at age 24. His earliest fishing memories involve catching tiny trout in a stream near his house using a jam jar and a net. Fly fishing runs in his family, with his father and grandfather being skilled fly fishermen. Although introduced to it gradually, he received his first fly rod at age 12 from his grandfather. 8:21 - He worked as a guide on two iconic salmon and sea trout fisheries in Ireland, starting at age 18. He continued guiding during visits home while exploring fly fishing globally. He highlights the decline of sea trout fishing in Ireland, which began in the late 1980s to early 1990s, coinciding with the rise of salmon farming. 12:28 - We start to dig into fly fishing in New Zealand, specifically in the small town of Alexandra on the South Island. Ronan describes his work as a guide, focusing mainly on brown trout, although rainbow trout are also present in the rivers and lakes he fishes. He emphasizes that his fishing is mostly river-based, but he also enjoys lake fishing due to his background. The average fish he targets weighs around three to four pounds. He aims for larger fish, typically five to six pounds, and mentions that he and his clients have caught around 20 double-figure fish. 15:11 - We talk about some sight fishing techniques, particularly in rivers. Ronan explains that the ideal scenario is finding a fish "on station," meaning it's feeding in one spot, which gives the angler time to plan their approach. He contrasts this with a fish that is cruising, which requires a different, more dynamic strategy. The key to success in New Zealand, according to Ronan, is making the first cast accurately. Multiple attempts can alert the fish, making it harder to catch. 18:30 - Ronan explains his preference for using a dry fly as an indicator since fish can take a dry fly at any time of the year. However, he notes that if a fish is swinging, it's more likely to take a nymph. He also describes the importance of watching the dry fly for any movement indicating a strike, but he also stresses the value of directly observing the fish's mouth if visible to catch subtle takes that the dry fly might not indicate. 20:39 - We talk about the fishing opportunities in New Zealand, particularly in the South Island. Ronan elaborates on various regions such as Mackenzie District (known for lakes and rivers), the West Coast (wild and remote), Southland (with numerous rivers), and Otago (where Ronan is based, offering a variety of fishing experiences). He mentions the availability of brown trout and sea trout, noting that sea trout, which migrate to the ocean and return, can grow significantly larger, sometimes up to 15 pounds. 23:00 - Ronan has been part of Sexyloops since around 2003, not long after its establishment in 1998. Their collaboration began when Ronan met Paul during the filming of an early fishing movie, leading to friendship and numerous fishing trips together, especially to New Zealand. 24:40 - I ask about the allure of New Zealand as a fishing destination. He highlights the country's exceptional freedom for anglers, where a single license allows fishing in various public waters. He emphasized the "queen chain" concept, which grants public access to 22 yards of either bank of a river, provided the access point is public. 28:04 - As a member of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA), Ronan mentions that there are about 140 guides spread across both islands of New Zealand, which he believes is sufficient to meet the demand. 29:07 - Our conversation shifts to his blog, which he has been writing for about 15 years as part of Sexyloops. The blog includes approximately 350 entries, focusing on his observations of fishing rather than instructional content. 30:21 - We talk about Ronan's involvement in a TV series called "Pure Fly NZ", produced by Nick Reygaert. Ronan and his friend Jeff Forsee participated in one episode, showcasing unique fly fishing experiences in New Zealand, which deviated from the typical fishing scenes in the country. 31:25 - For those planning a fishing trip to New Zealand, Ronan explains that the fishing season runs from October to the end of May, with each month offering unique opportunities. While January and February are popular, they can be challenging due to heat and increased angling pressure. Ronan suggests considering earlier months like October  to December, which are cooler and less crowded. 33:53 - We go into the fishing trips available on Ronan's website. He recommends staying as long as possible, ideally a month, and emphasizes the value of starting the trip with a guide for a few days to get a good foundation. For those planning a trip specifically to catch big brown trout, he clarifies that the definition of "big" varies among anglers, typically considered to be around 5-7 pounds. While these sizes are common, catching a double-figure fish is unrealistic due to the rarity of such large trout. He notes that targeting the biggest fish can sometimes detract from the enjoyment of the fishing itself, turning it more into a hunt. 37:53 - Ronan explains his approach to organizing a seven-day fishing trip, which is popular among his regular clients. For the first three days, they fish locally, exploring medium-sized rivers, small streams, and lakes, including sight fishing on lakes. The remaining four days involve traveling to different locations based on the best fishing conditions at the time, allowing flexibility to adapt to weather and other variables. 40:46 - He mentions that the best mayfly hatches occur in the cooler months, particularly April and October. However, during the summer months of January to February, terrestrial fishing becomes ideal, with cicadas, hoppers, and beetles providing excellent opportunities for dry fly fishing. 43:00 - Ronan shares a story about the time he and Paul Arden of Sexyloops were in the midst of putting together a TV show with the Discovery Channel. 48:40 - If given a chance to travel elsewhere, Ronan would like to visit Paul in Malaysia for fly fishing. He shares his experiences of fishing there, emphasizing that it's a challenging but rewarding activity suited for seasoned fly fishers who appreciate the sport beyond catching large numbers of fish. 52:15 - Ronan gives some valuable tips on sight fishing for brown trout. He suggests that anglers should practice accurate short-range casting before the trip, as fishing usually occurs within 40 feet. He emphasizes the importance of remaining calm, especially when encountering large trout, which can cause nervousness. He also advises anglers to trust their practiced skills and to focus on casting ahead of the fish rather than directly at it. 53:12 - Ronan mentions he primarily uses a 6wt rod, specifically the Hot Torpedo, which is designed for New Zealand fishing. For fly lines, he's not particular about brands as long as the line is correctly weighted to match the rod. 56:49 - Ronan recounts a memorable story where his grandfather won a sea trout competition with a large salmon in Ireland. We also talk about his efforts to pass the sport to his kids. 1:00:12 - He also shares a memory about his father visiting and their fishing tradition. His father has visited about ten times, and during each visit, they used to fish every day for 30 days straight. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/653

Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/649 Presented By:  Stonefly Nets,  Visit Helena, MT,  Waters West, Togiak River Lodge Today's episode is special because we've got Bill Gammell, the creator of the Five Essentials of Fly Casting, a framework many experts swear by. Find out how dropping your right foot can improve your timing, discover the most important variable in fly casting, and get the top drill to boost your casting skills. Let's get you back on track with better line speed and loop control! Show Notes with Bill Gammel on The Five Essentials of Fly Casting.  02:08 - Bill started fly fishing at just six or seven years old, catching Bluegill with his older brother and father. His passion for fly fishing continued until college, and he recalls a time he had to switch to conventional tackle for his master's degree research. 04:40 - Bill still lives in Baytown, the same area where he grew up and where his dad greatly influenced his love for fishing. Though the area isn't ideal for fly fishing because of the murky water from the Trinity River, Bill and his family found ways to catch fish. The Five Essentials of Fly Casting 07:18 - Bill talks about how he and his dad learned fly casting together. His dad was a natural athlete with great hand-eye coordination. They used a home video camera to record expert casters like Lefty Kreh and Mel Krieger. Over time, they noticed common patterns and eventually put together what we now know as the "Five Essentials of Fly Casting." Bill said they didn't invent anything new but identified key principles that all great fly casters share. 11:02 - Bill started teaching fly casting lessons as a teenager, but it wasn't until they were asked to write a booklet for the Federation of Fly Fishers that they fully laid out the essentials. They spent two years carefully analyzing videos and got input from top tournament casters. Their work was published in the late '80s and became the foundation for the FFF's instructor program. Check out the The Five Essentials of Fly Casting. Tips for Increasing Casting Distance 20:03 - One of the most important lessons he learned was to focus on trajectory and to keep your cast more level, not too high. He also emphasizes that line speed and loop control are the foundations of distance casting. Bill said if you master those two, you'll be able to cast a full fly line without much trouble. If you want to improve your casting, Bill recommends checking out Paul Arden's Sexyloops website. It's a solid resource with articles, videos, and step-by-step methods to help you learn to cast better. Listen to the Episode 638 with Paul Arden Here. 25:48 - Bill breaks down the Five Essentials of fly casting and explains how they work together. He said he now teaches them in a new order to make more sense. The most important essential is the straight line path of the rod tip, which helps create a clean cast. 31:00 - The arc changes based on how much the rod bends, which can be affected by the length of the line and the amount of power used. A narrow arc is for short casts, and a wider arc is needed for longer casts. Check out this article by Bill Gammel on Making adjustments on the fly. 35:04 - Timing and power application are important in fly casting. Bill explains that to get the best cast, your timing needs to be spot on—starting your forward cast just as the line straightens out behind you. 37:32 - He also shares his secret to power: a smooth acceleration to a stop. This means starting slow, adding power in the middle, and then stopping quickly. The stop is key because it lets the rod transfer energy to the line. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/649

Is the Perfect the Enemy of the Good?

Will Wright Catholic

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2022 12:38

The Perfect As the Enemy of the GoodThe French philosopher Voltaire famously quipped "Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" which means "the perfect is the enemy of the good."It would seem that the great American author John Steinbeck agrees. He wrote: "And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good." Confucius is attributed with something similar: "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without." And Shakespeare wrote in King Lear: "Striving to better, oft we mar what's well." George Orwell more recently wrote: "The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection." Be Perfect As Your Heavenly Father is PerfectThe greatest human being to ever live is a Divine Person named Jesus called Christ. He said, "You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Mt. 5:48)." So, is the perfect the enemy of the good? Or is perfection the goal? Interestingly, this passage follows directly after the Christian call to love one's enemies. All cultures say that we must love our neighbor, even as ourself. The Golden Rule is shared by most every culture. However, the call to love even your enemy is impossible. That is, it is impossible without the Divine, who is perfect. Can, then, the call to perfection be reconciled with the seemingly ubiquitous notion that the perfect is the enemy of the good? Absolutely! The key is in the view of perfection which Jesus gives us.Christ does not ask us to be perfect on our own accord. He asks us to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. It is precisely by participation with the Divine that we can hope to be perfect. And apart from Him we have no hope. Rooted in the humility of knowing that we are not God, we can begin to grow in self-knowledge. This self-knowledge then leads to personal improvement, if we cooperate with grace. If  you are not a believer, then perhaps what I am saying makes no sense. But, let me put it this way. You and I are not perfect. If you have any sense of self, you know this is true. In your mind, using your power of abstraction, try to hold in your mind not something that is good or better, but the absolute best. This sheer perfection, the best, is God for whatever quality we are speaking of. This is too simplistic because God is personal, but this might help you contextualize. So, if God is the absolute best in the virtue in which you are trying to improve, then He is also the goal. And not only that, if He is the Creator and sustainer of all things, then He is the One who moves an act to its completion. To be perfect is to be with He who is perfect, every step of the way. This means that the important thing is not our perfection at any moment, but our striving. By aiming correctly at the goal, and cooperating with the perfect good, then we are on the right track. I would argue that this means more to people, innately, than even achieving a goal. We are more compelled by a hero suffering willingly to overcome an obstacle than we are to even see the hero win. What is Meant By "The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good"?The enemy of the Good is not the perfect. For the Perfect One is the Good itself. What is the enemy of the good is perfectionism. Perfectionism is a form of pelagianism, an ancient heresy in which one is to pull themselves up by their spiritual bootstraps and will to be better. Simply by trying harder, the perfectionist believes that they can attain perfection.Certainly, the perfect ideal must always be taken into account, because it gives us our goal, our terminus, our design. If we do not measure up to this perfection, then we have a few courses of action. We can discern that the path that we are pursuing is not the right one. We can continue to "try, try again." We can despair. We can resolutely continue to strive. With all the many courses of action, how can we know what to do? We can be sure that we are on the right course only if we are sure of what we are aiming at. In the absence of a target, an arrow flying through the air would only be a hazard. If we are certain that our target is worthwhile, then despair is not an option and quitting is not an option. If the target is worthwhile, then continued striving is the proper course. Being With the Perfect Rather Than Being the PerfectRemember, that to be perfect is to be WITH the perfect rather than BEING the perfect. As we seek a goal, no matter how big or small, we need to ensure that it is well ordered to the highest good, who alone is perfect. We should not ask: "what do I want?" Because we will often get the wrong answer. Instead, we should ask "what does God want for me?"If the notion of God makes you uncomfortable, then ask this subordinate question: "Where does the wisdom of the ages tell me that I should aim?" Human nature does not change and the societies and cultures over many millennia bear with them a great deal of wisdom for us to harvest. To be with the perfect is to allow ourselves to be given wisdom, accept it, and apply it. Those who attempt to make their own perfection inevitably choose wrongly. The perfect is the enemy of the good, when the perfection comes from within us.Just Do ItThe U.K. author Paul Arden, in his book It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be writes, "Too many people spend too much time trying to perfect something before they actually do it. Instead of waiting for perfection, run with what you got, and fix it along the way."I am certainly not endorsing doing something dangerous without a plan, but there is a lot of truth to what Mr. Arden has written. This really gets to the heart of what most people mean when they say that "the perfect is the enemy of the good." They mean that an idea can die in committee before it ever gets put into practice. A project might continue to percolate until all of the passion is completely gone from it. By following in the venerable traditions which came before, we give ourselves valuable guardrails. Morality is objective and the convictions of what has always been true protect us from erring egregiously as we press forward towards the good and perfect. Without these guardrails, we will fall headlong off a cliff of moral relativism and subjective narcissism. The balance gives us this: we must move forward and act. We cannot be paralyzed by fear and a desire for everything to be perfect before it is actualized. But we must constantly refocus our aim at the highest good. For the Christian, this is where prayer comes in. For those of other faiths and even agnostics, this could be called meditation.By refocusing our aim and working hard, in humility, we can have hope that we will come to the fullness of perfection. Rest assured, that if you get there one day, it will not be because of your own solo merit; it will be because of your cooperation with the highest good. This is a public episode. “Getting it wrong is right.” from Paul Arden's bookhttps://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-How-Good-Want/dp/0714843377 ( It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be) is a path to making something fresh by doing it wrong. Being right means holding on to how things have always been done instead of breaking into new territory. To be right is to play it safe but to be wrong often is where innovation and new ideas are created. Today we look at some examples of how this thinking has been practiced and how you can practice it today. Are you feeling burned out creatively? Are you starting to compare yourself to other photographers? Do you struggle between providing a service and being an artist? All these struggles are so connected. They come from a place of stuck creativity – whether because we haven’t challenged our mindset or maybe just from the monotony of life. Let’s break out of the rut! My conversation with the amazing Fer Juaristi is going to stretch you to look at things differently and to be a lifelong learner. You don’t just have to take photography courses or spend hours on Instagram or Pinterest – the best inspiration may come from music or books or just your clients and locations themselves.  You’re going to love learning from this master.  Introductions and how he got started. (2:30) We start by talking about his e-book and illustrations over his images. He mentions being inspired by the work of Paul Arden. He got started because he needed art to promote his band in high school. So he read a book about photography and he didn’t let it go. From the mid-90s on, he kept pursuing the craft. A teacher let his use a camera and his creativity felt fully engaged. The power of mixing visual and audio creativity. (8:00) Even without video, you can use slideshows to maximize the emotional connection using tools like slideshows. Fer shares his tips for getting personal audio to use in his slideshows. His background was in videography, but he loves the otherworldly colors he can get with photography. He uses Artlist to get music for his slideshows. There’s a slideshow challenge happening on his Patreon.  The adventure of becoming an artist and why he doesn’t follow photographers. (17:00) He mentions the book, Just Kids by Patti Smith as inspiring him. He suggests not over-following other photographers and creating truly unique work. “I’m a big supporter of always being a student.” He went to as many workshops and conferences as he can – he was present at Adobe when they were launching Lightroom. The group Fearless Photographers especially inspired him. He gave instead of just wanting to take from people he wanted to learn from.   Ira Glass’ iconic video.    Fer’s biggest source of inspiration and how he makes it happen. (26:00) Break the cliches. “You have to go into every assignment like a Martian. You have to see everything with fresh eyes. It doesn’t matter if yesterday or two days ago and tomorrow you had another session. You just have to go blank – zero expectations – it’s like being on LSD 24/7.” He loves the Super Feel approach. He captures moments more so than perfect style. We talk about how we fill out portfolios and how to diversify them. (30:00) “Everyone is trying to find their way.” We need all kinds of photography. Different clients want different things too. He also shares about balancing between providing a service and creating like an artist. He doesn’t bring a second shooter to his weddings.    What he looks for when he arrives at a location. (34:00) He builds a picture from the back to the front. He looks for a clean backdrop, patterns, and then adds in the couple. He takes the time to compose and be really intentional. He got burned out on videography, so he’s really intentional about keeping the creative spark and passion alive.  “You have to have your rules of creation” and decide what your photos are going to represent. Sometimes you need more tools, but sometimes you need to simplify and just use one lens. Sometimes Fer will leave his favorite lens behind. We need to take risks instead of blending in. “I”m always trying to justify the investment they are doing in me.” Logos, branding, website, and marketing. (46:00) Hiring a team for a website project is a great way to not have to work with the same team on repeat, but to get experts in certain areas (like copywriting or graphic design) can help. Taste continually evolve and change – that’s okay. What productivity looks like for Fer between photographing weddings, running a Patreon, being an educator, and a husband and father. (49:00) “As a creative, you still need discipline.” Fer wakes up at 4am to get enough time in. He recommends the book Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. He reads a lot of self help and productivity books to keep growing in this area. “It takes work and discipline, but I keep seeing the benefits in playing with my kids and being present.” We also talk about being good people and it translating into the work we create. He talks about the importance of empowering people and staying humble. Want to learn from Fer?  He did Conference and Chill recently (I was a teacher too!) and make sure to check out his Patreon!

Howies was cited as the 6th most 'recession-proof' company in the UK at the time. we could all use some of that wisdom right now. We discuss: His start in the ad agency world, he got frustrated because he didn’t want to sell sugar water anymore and wanted to do something with a bit more meaning. The reason why people spend their whole lives making a billion dollars then spending the rest of their lives giving it away is that they didn’t get any meaning from making it in the first place. We talk about how people get seduced by fast growth. everyone’s in a rush to build a business quickly and take VC money. His advice is to build something slowly. you’re not gonna build anything with any great significance quickly. We also discussed: How he built Hieat denim with a simple email newsletter. His books, mentors, successes and failures. This is a masterclass in business growth. Stick around for our favorite questions at the end where he talks about his mentors Paul Arden. Experimental episode digging into the highlights I've gathered from Paul Arden's book, 'Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite' We go into 4 KEY takeaways for you to ponder on this week... Purchase Book on Amazon The bestselling author of "It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be" Paul Arden turns logic and common sense on its head in "Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite "and gives you the confidence to take bigger risks and enjoy your work more than you can imagine. Have you ever considered the extraordinary power of making bad decisions, being unreasonable, and taking dangerous, unadvisable risks? Has it ever occurred to you that nothing is more dangerous than playing it safe, or that the straight and narrow path may lead you right off a cliff? Paul Arden has become a global business guru on the strength of such radical insights. His first book, "It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be", became a word of mouth classic, selling more than half a million copies. Instead of the usual boring advice, he offered daring quips, aphorisms, and paradoxes - all seeking to revise what we habitually hold as our 'common sense'. "Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite" is an even more daring attack on the way we look at our work and our world.  Enjoy!
