Homeschooling high school can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! In this episode, our community manager, Dawn Garrett, steps in as host to chat with homeschool mom Elizabeth Overcash about her experience navigating these crucial years. Elizabeth, a retired military wife, shares her unique perspective—having one child who graduated from a traditional school while homeschooling her younger two.She talks about shifting from a hands-on teaching style to more of a coaching role, balancing structure with flexibility, and helping her teens take ownership of their education. She also discusses how she integrates out-of-the-box learning, like film studies and Scouting, while ensuring her kids meet high school requirements.Key Takeaways:The transition to homeschooling high school doesn't have to be scary—it's about adjusting your role from teacher to guide.Structure matters, but so does allowing flexibility for real-life learning.Giving teens ownership over their curriculum choices boosts motivation and engagement.Planning tools like Navigating High School and Plan Your Year can make the process smoother.Homeschooling high school is about preparing kids for life, not just checking academic boxes.Links and Resources:Homeschool Better Together PodcastNavigating High SchoolPlan Your Year AutopilotHomeschool Better Together CommunityCure the Fear of Homeschooling High School by Anne CaricoAndrew Pudawa's Structure and Style programCollege Prep GeniusSarah McKenzie Read-Aloud Revival PodcastFor full show notes and a transcript of today's episode, head to pambarnhill.com/hsbt(33)

In this episode, I share my step-by-step process for reflecting on 2024 and creating an intentional plan for 2025. By the end of this episode, you'll feel inspired to create a meaningful and actionable plan to make 2025 your most aligned year yet! Here's what I cover: How I reflect on what went well and what didn't in 2024. My process for identifying patterns and lessons from the year. How I prioritize feelings and alignment over results in each area of my life. Setting tangible goals and identifying my “domino goals” for 2025. Incorporating money dates, launch planning, and clearing limiting beliefs into my yearly planning process. Why creating a vision board and putting it on my phone background keeps me inspired. Actionable Steps From This Episode Reflect on 2024: Review what went well and what didn't go well by looking through your calendar and iPhone photos. Identify patterns, themes, and big takeaways from the year. Best and Lowest Moments: List your best and lowest moments of 2024 and turn each into a lesson. (Stay tuned for a future episode where I'll dive deeper into this!) Set Tangible Goals: Write down what you want in each area of life with clear and active steps. Identify Domino Goals: Choose 3-5 “domino goals” that will create a ripple effect of success in 2025. Plan Money Dates: Schedule money check-ins for the year to track patterns and align financial goals. Plan Launches: Roughly outline your yearly launches to stay on track with your business goals. How to Make 2025 Your Breakthrough Year

Blogging Creatives On Fire

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 30, 2024 11:38

As we sit on the cusp of a new year, it's natural to reflect on what we've achieved and where we've fallen short. But this isn't just about looking back—it's about deciding how you want to move forward. What if the secret to your success wasn't doing more, but doing less? In this episode, I'm challenging you to adopt a mindset shift for 2025: commit to less, grow more. Let's explore why this works, how to implement it, and how you can build the business you've always dreamed of while working smarter, not harder. 1. Why “Less Is More” Works The temptation to do it all is strong. We feel like we need to spread ourselves thin across platforms, projects, and ideas to ensure we're covering all our bases. But often, this approach leads to burnout and stagnation. When you focus your energy on a singular goal or area, you: Create clarity in your business direction. Do higher-quality work in less time. See faster, more consistent growth. The Plan: Commit to less for 90 days. Focus on one area of your business—whether it's blogging, YouTube, or social media—and double down. Watch as your progress takes off. 2. Plan Your Year with Intention A successful year starts with a solid plan. Here's how to get started: Fill in your personal calendar first. Mark vacations, birthdays, and self-care days. These are non-negotiables. Dedicate specific time blocks to work. Limit your work hours to increase focus and productivity. Use a content planner. My 52-Week Content Planner for Creatives is designed to keep you consistent and organized. Pro Tip: When your work time is limited, you'll naturally prioritize tasks that move the needle instead of getting stuck in busywork. 3. Identify Your Zone of Genius Every successful entrepreneur has a “zone of genius”—the tasks that come naturally and energize them. To identify yours: Think about what you love doing and could excel at for free. Ask yourself: What do others frequently compliment me on? Consider what feels effortless compared to other parts of your business. Once you've identified your zone of genius, hire out the rest. Yes, even if you're on a tight budget. Sell unused items, cut unnecessary expenses, or find creative ways to fund outsourcing tasks that drain your energy. 4. Commit to Being #1 (Even If It's Just in Your Mind) Ask yourself: What would it take to be number one in my chosen niche or platform? How would you spend your time? Who would you need to network with? What skills or knowledge would you need to acquire? Visualizing this level of excellence helps you create a roadmap for your daily and weekly habits. You don't have to be the best—but working as though you're striving for the top will transform your business. 5. Join a Community for Accountability Making big changes alone can feel daunting. That's why I created Fuel, a mastermind group designed to help you: Stay accountable to your goals. Get real-time feedback from like-minded entrepreneurs. Build the confidence to grow your business strategically. Details: Fuel launches in January! Join us for expert insights, peer support, and a roadmap to success in 2025. Sign up here. Closing Thoughts 2025 can be your year to grow—not by doing more, but by committing to less. This shift won't just benefit your business; it'll help you reclaim your time, energy, and creativity. Ready to commit to less and grow more? Then Fuel is for you! This exclusive mastermind group will provide monthly coaching, accountability, and peer support to help you achieve your blogging goals. I've talked on the podcast before about using organizational tools, such as a calendar, to give you a visual of your year and showcase all the good things you're doing as a counselor. So, in today's episode, I'm sharing why you need to plan your year with a 10,000-foot view and the benefits it has on your year's success. You know how busy you are as a high school counselor and the many directions you're being pulled throughout the year, which is one of the many reasons you should plan your year at the beginning of the school year. And while keeping track of your tasks helps with scheduling, there's more to your job than just administrative tasks. By taking the time to plan your year, you're also able to add events and tasks that fill your cup. After all, you got into this profession because you love it and want to fill your year with things you enjoy doing that serve your students and your counseling program!Although it may feel overwhelming to think about planning an entire year, by doing so, you avoid missing anything important, can think about the goals you have, and can schedule events and tasks that bring you joy as a high school counselor. ViAs we start this year, each of us is in different circumstances. I rebel against anyone with a "one size fits all" plan that works for everybody. Each of us has a different approach to life and planning. As I do my planning, I spend time learning from others. You can also plan your year in a new way as I share what I do. Over the past twenty years, I've created an annual planning system that works well for me. For the first time, I've put together a podcast sharing how I plan my year, along with some free forms you can use to plan your year. In this podcast, I include 28+ questions I ask myself each year. How I used two one-page forms to review last year, and I plan to change everything this year. A "time budgeting" spreadsheet that helps me make a big-picture time budget for the year. I also describe how I modify and improve my plan for the year as I grapple with life's hard questions. You can download these forms at www.coolcatteacher.com/annualplan. I will also send these to subscribers in my following newsletter after the release of this show. Show Sponsor: Edge U Badges - Edge U Badges from Forward Edge is a fantastic micro credentialing program for teachers, administrators, and school staff. In this program, you can earn contact hours or graduate credit. With the ISTE Seal of Alignment, this program is approved by many districts as a flexible, personalized way for teachers to learn and grow. They will work with you to help your district accept your transcript for licensure renewal hours. Edge U Badges has former teachers review every single badge within 1-3 business days of submission, and no badge is ever denied without very specific feedback on what you can do to resubmit successfully or positive feedback on successful submissions. This is a program that I'm reviewing for my own renewal that comes up this year and I'm excited about their micro-credentialing system, which is why I'm recommending it to you!  Use the code COOLCAT for $20 off a premium account.   Disclosure of Material Connection: This is a “sponsored podcast episode.” The company who sponsored it compensated me via cash payment, gift, or something else of value to include a reference to their product. Whether you're a parent, caretaker, working another job, or a full time artist, we want to talk about ways to plan smarter as an artist! You may love planning like us, you may hate it, or maybe you are somewhere in between. Whatever the case, we can all use ideas for how to improve our planning. Join us for Episode 54 of Thriving Artists Podcast, 5 Simple Ways to Plan Smarter as an Artist, because this is the perfect time of year to reflect on how you plan as we wrap up 2023. Jamie & Kaylan's 5 Simple Ways to Plan Smarter as an Artist are: Schedule in Time for Planning: Plan a time to plan! Planning IS a task that needs to happen and so it is important to put that planning time in your calendar. It takes time to get set up in order to do what you want to do with your days! Plan Your Year in Quarters: We really believe in this philosophy and live it out on the Thrive Together Network – planning out each quarter has many benefits! Planning out three months at a time is a perfect chunk of time to set some larger goals without losing sight of the smaller steps it takes to make them happen. Move from Macro to Micro (and back again!): Whether you are a big picture type of person or someone who is all about the details, we encourage you to find balance between the two. Keep both in mind as you set goals, create to do lists, and schedule out your work time. Follow a Map with Other Artists: We created a planning tool that values all of the things we cover in this episode. It's the Thriving Artist Map and it is a weekly studio planner with tools to plan your year while considering the big picture and smaller goals all at once. Remain Rooted in Your Why: For any plan you make, always keep an eye on why you are doing what you do. Don't work toward things that are outside of your motivations. Regularly check in to make sure your plans match up with your goals.  As always, we are here for you, we are cheering you on, and we believe in the work you are doing as thriving artists!  Join the Thrive Together Network to build your network of support!
