We're heading to the beachside town of Ohope now, to catch up with a Kiwi-Fijian chef who's recently put down roots there. Paul Patterson has had a hand in opening dozens of restaurants overseas and had a colourful career before that as an auto engineer, a drain layer, and a security guard to name a few. But it was the food business back in Aotearoa that he wanted to land in, and after some trial and error, he's opened a harbourside restaurant. Six months in, bookings at The Fisherman's Wharf are steady and Paul has become known for fishing out of the window. Jesse catches up with Paul to see how it's going and how his life is post-Bachelorette

In Infectious Behavior, neurobiologist Paul Patterson examines the involvement of the immune system in autism, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder. Although genetic approaches to these diseases have garnered the lion's share of publicity and funding, scientists are uncovering evidence of the important avenues of communication between the brain and the immune system and their involvement in mental illness. Patterson focuses on this brain-immune crosstalk, exploring the possibility that it may help us understand the causes of these common, but still mysterious, diseases. The heart of this engaging book, accessible to nonscientists, concerns the involvement of the immune systems of the pregnant woman and her fetus, and a consideration of maternal infection as a risk factor for schizophrenia and autism. Patterson reports on research that may shed light on today's autism epidemic. He also outlines the risks and benefits of both maternal and postnatal vaccinations. In the course of his discussion, Patterson offers a short history of immune manipulation in treating mental illness (recounting some frightening but fascinating early experiments) and explains how the immune system influences behavior and how the brain regulates the immune system, looking in particular at stress and depression. He examines the prenatal origins of adult disease and evidence for immune involvement in autism, schizophrenia, and depression. Finally, he describes the promise shown by recent animal experiments that have led to early clinical trials of postnatal and adult treatments for patients with autism and related disorders. Paul H. Patterson, a developmental neurobiologist, is Anne P. and Benjamin R. En daarbij vond Ab muziek van de hedendaagse Britse componist Paul Patterson.

Because they will make some noise in March. And could it be the Zags finally have some competition out in the WCC? Maybe.

Text LEARNERS to 44222 for leadership development resources Full show-notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 393: Chris Holtmann - Head Basketball Coach of Ohio State University Buckeyes Notes: Chris played his college basketball at a small Christian school called Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. For a coach named Paul Patterson. Chris said, “I think the core of who I am as a coach comes from him.” Don’t Be Afraid To Pursue Growth - "As I debated, I realized that I couldn’t blame myself for craving stability – it was only human nature after all. We are drawn by the soft voice of consistency, the allure of a warm blanket of security in our jobs and lives. And while many of us willingly happily give in to living within the status quo, the reality is that the world around us rarely remains motionless. The sun rises and sets, the seasons pass and the world keeps moving and changing. It is only as we grow older and look back at life that we realize all that we have missed, all that we could have accomplished, had we simply pushed ourselves to break free of our fears." "As I found myself deliberating once again, I began to think back to the work of Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck on motivation and failure. Dweck drew a distinction between performance orientation and learning orientation. Children that believe that their intelligence is fixed almost always give up on problems quickly, whereas those that believe their intelligence is malleable, conversely, stick with problems longer. Adults are no different. Those who are performance oriented are dissuaded by failure - they favor stability. Whereas those of who are learning oriented embrace opportunity and eschew the status quo." Head Coaches To Lead Their Teams To 5 Straight 1st Round Tourney Wins: Chris Holtmann, Mike Krzyzewski, Jay Wright, Mark Few, Bill Self, Roy Williams, John Calipari Article: David Brooks - Thick versus Think organizations -- "How To Leave A Mark On People" Focus on the process... "Do today well." "Don't compare yourself to others." Why is Brad Stevens one of the most effective coaches in the world? "He's an extremely curious learner. He has tremendous EQ and understands how to connect with people." Chris got promoted to be the interim head coach at Butler shortly after accepting the job to be an assistant... His boss (athletic director) told him, "You'll be evaluated daily." He came to every practice to watch Chris coach. "It was hard to hear, but it was the reality. I couldn't listen to critiques. I had to coach to my convictions." Living your values: You must make a commitment to your values and live them daily. The values of the Ohio State basketball team: Truth Humility Respect Toughness - "Grit is imperative in successful people. Your response to challenging moments says everything to success." Coach Tony Bennett is tremendously tough. "Calm is contagious." Your response to difficult circumstances is what toughness is all about. Accountability Thankful "He who would be calm must first put on the appearance of being calm." How does one develop composure? "You need people around you to give you honest feedback. We don't realize how reactionary we can be." "Any time you feel upset with a player, wait to talk about it until you can process it. Think it through..." Excellence = Consistency Discipline "Your habits need to match your dreams." Be convicted in what you believe What Chris looks for in a player: Toughness -- "What's the most challenging thing you've been through? How did you respond?" Selfless "What's your body language on the bench when you aren't playing?" "What's your response to a teammates success?" Honesty Advice to leaders: You can't skip steps in the process of being a leader Value the beginning stages Eliminate comparison to others as much as possible Be committed to growing professionally and personally. It's about your daily habits. Your character is put on display. "We write our stories one decision at a time."
The Teacher Coach with T.K. Griffith and Scott Matthew Callaghan
Dave Close, owner of over 500 wins on the sidelines of the high school basketball world, went from the driveways of Stow as a youth to the sideline of Stow High where he has spent a lifetime impacting lives. Coaching his Stow teams to two Final Fours, national rankings and numerous regional appearance would seem to be his claim to fame. But, it's not. A faith-filled, caring man, Close considered being a minister before his college coach Paul Patterson at Taylor University steered him toward the ministry of coaching. A commitment to forming young boys into men ensued, and Close is one of the best at mixing love of players with accountability and rigor. Often misunderstood perhaps or even stereotyped as "old-school," Close has adapted and changed in more ways than most contemporary coaches: offensive systems, practices, drills, communication, game management and defensive schemes. But one thing has never changed--his relentless pursuit of excellence, his will to never give anything but his best to his players, and his strong faith and family oriented love of Stow basketball and its many players past and present. We are lucky that we have seen his evolution and excellence in the greater Akron area. Thank you Coach Close for evening the evening with us!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/teachercoach)

On episode 12, we talk to professor of poultry science and poultry nutrition at Penn State University, Dr. Paul Patterson, about the components of a balanced poultry diet and how the nutritional profile of hemp seed might be beneficial to the poultry industry, especially the organic poultry industry, thanks in part to hemp’s comparatively higher levels of the essential amino acid methionine. Dr. Patterson also has some great ideas for hemp research projects. Give a listen.

Leon Bosch is a remarkable figure in the world of the double bass. From his early years growing up in South Africa to his long tenure with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and his proliferation of solo projects, Leon has approached each challenge with a focus and determination that are incredibly inspiring. This is a “must listen” episode for any musician eager to realize their greatest potential. After retiring from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields to devote himself fully to solo, chamber, and conducting projects, Leon has been working to bring undiscovered treasures of the repertoire to light and to encourage new works for the double bass from composers. New composition are being written for Leon from South African composer Péter Louis van Dijk, British composer Paul Patterson, and American jazz icon Wynton Marsalis. This episode is sponsored by Discover Double Bass, and they have a course on bowing technique with Lauren Pierce that I highly recommend checking out. This course is divided into 37 HD lessons, and Lauren gives a short video overview of the three categories that these videos cover: the basics, bow control, and real world techniques. There’s also a free preview lesson on phrasing with the bow—check it out! We feature excerpts from Leon’s latest album throughout the episode.
