Do you have good AI? That's “aesthetic intelligence” — not artificial intelligence. Pauline Brown, former chairman of North America for the luxury goods company LVMH, argues that great leaders need to develop “aesthetic intelligence” to stand out among competitors. They need to understand how their products or services can “elicit true delight.” “When you look at the research, the vast majority of reasons that anyone will buy one product over another is based on how that product or service makes the person feel,” she tells IdeaCast host Alison Beard. In this episode, you'll learn from companies—like Starbucks, Airbnb, and, of course, Apple—that successfully use aesthetics to set their products apart. You'll also learn why it's important for leaders or founders—not customers—to define and maintain a company's aesthetic principles. Brown is the author of the book Aesthetic Intelligence: How to Boost It and Use It in Business and Beyond. Like everything in life, when it comes to developing your Aesthetic Intelligence it's the holistic picture that matters. Tapping into your taste levels is a somatic process that involves the embodiment of your senses and feelings, not just the acquisition of cognitive information. After all, mind and body are inextricably linked: to develop one, you must cultivate the other. Reaching an optimal mind-body balance in a world that keeps pushing the mind above everythingelse and numbing our senses through constant daily stresses, information overload and digital overexposure can become a challenge. Today, Pauline Brown invites wellness guru Sarah Mundo (both part of our tastemaker community) to uncover some of her favorite techniques to remain grounded and attuned to her body.

Paddle in. In this episode, I interview iconic luxury goods leader Pauline Brown author of Aesthetic Intelligence about how the new competitive landscape of brands will be in the codes, or the senses that people remember about your brand. As former Chairman of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton North America she details the art and science of brand-building under the rubric of Aesthetic Intelligence. In a world in which people have cheap and easy access to most goods and services, yet crave richer and more meaningful experiences, aesthetics has become a key differentiator for most companies and a critical factor of their success and even their survival. business, shows executives, entrepreneurs, and other professionals how to harness the power of the senses to create products, services, and experiences that stand out, resonate with their customers, and create long-term value for their businesses. The power is rooted in Aesthetic Intelligence—or “the other AI,” as Brown refers to it. Aesthetic Intelligence can be learned. Indeed, people are born with far more capacity than they use, but even those that are naturally gifted must continue to refine their skills, lest their aesthetic advantage atrophy. Through a combination of storytelling and practical advice, the author shows how aesthetic intelligence creates business value and how executives, entrepreneurs and others can boost their own AI and successfully apply it to business. Brown offers research, strategies and practical exercises focused on four essential AI skills. Aesthetic Intelligence provides a crucial roadmap to help business leaders build their businesses in their own authentic and distinctive way. Aesthetic Intelligence is about creating delight, lifting the human spirit, and rousing the imagination through sensorial experiences. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Malan Breton and Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin over Zoom video! Fashion Designer Malan Breton takes his signature voice with a new twist to the classic Christmas tune, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” as a duet with chart topping recording artist Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin. His Taiwanese baritone vibrato dances in a lovely way with her rich sultry mezzo soprano as the two deliver this beautiful rendition for this holiday season. Breton enlisted English producer Alex Davies who is best known for his co-write for Kodaline’s single ‘Brother.’ He also has penned singles for the likes of JONES as well as further collaborations with Birdy, Gabrielle Aplin, Sigrid and Elderbrook. Alex is also classically trained in arranging as well as being a professional Pianist, Guitarist & Violinist. Giovanni Damiani (Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Ray, ‘The Prayer’ by Andrea Bocelli) has also been enlisted for the A&R for this single. Malan and Consuelo will be giving back all the proceeds to Equity Fights Aids. The holiday classic is a follow up to Malan’s synth take on the classic “Something Stupid” which was a hit on the iTunes chart and hit Top 10 in France, Top 5 in Greece, Top 10 in the UK, and Top 100 in the US. The song has nearly 1 million streams on Spotify. The powerhouse dance songstress, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin has joined this duet by bringing her rich vocals to this rendition. The two will be filming a video at the famed Vanderbilt Museum as a backdrop to this Christmas tune. “We have been friends for years and we have supported each other’s business endeavors throughout the years but never in music. It felt right on this Christmas Classic,” gushes Consuelo. Breton adds, “I wanted something special and magical and I think we have done just that on this track and with the backdrop of my fashion designs and with the classic Vanderbilt mansion it will bring that idea of magic!”Some of Vanderbilt Costin’s accolades include having 5 Top 10 singles on the Billboard Dance Charts and her music has skyrocketed on numerous International Charts. Not just a musical artist, she also adds tech entrepreneur to her list of accomplishments as she has successfully launched her digital platform, SOHOMUSE, where creatives can help creatives find jobs, find support and stay connected, network and sell their wares on the site’s newly created MARKETPLACE. With members that include top executives in the creative field such as Peter Landesman, Pauline Brown, Verne Mallis, Nicole Miller, and Breton himself, Consuelo is taking her entrepreneurial skills to new heights while also developing a podcast at the end of the year simply called “Delicious Conversations with Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin.”The power of Malan Breton’s brand does not quite explain the creative depth of who Breton is today. One of Taiwan’s most respected entrepreneurs, Breton is much more than just a fashion designer, or brand; he is an award-winning director, writer, actor, performer and over all prolific icon. Breton will also be dressing both talents for the video fresh off the digital runway. The combination of both Vanderbilt and Breton will make for this Christmas Classic truly reflect Breton’s tag line…Wherever you go shine.#MalanBreton #ConseuloVanderbiltCostin #I’llBeHomeForChristmasFor More Information on Malan BretonInstagram : www.instagram.com/malanbretonSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5QlgOp2ERll4XYpiT16FjJWebsite: www.malanbreton.comCharity: www.broadwaycares.orgFor More Information on Consuelo Vanderbilt CostinInstagram: www.instagram.com/consuelo_vanderbilt_costin Facebook: www.facebook.com/consuelo.costin Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0KPQday4Tf5FCWrFKinqXS Website: www.sohomuse.comWe want to hear from you! Welcome to episode #711 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #711 - Host: Mitch Joel. There's nothing harder than getting up onstage to speak in front of a room full of CEOs that run the world's largest associations following one of the most successful business people from the luxury goods space. I felt like a bum in my black jeans, pseudo dress jacket and sneakers. Pauline Brown had just finished her long stay as the Chairman of LVMH North America (Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton) working with a portfolio of over 70 brands in five different sectors across 100 markets. I made a joke about my clothes, we all laughed (she was probably being very kind and polite about my sad state of fashion affairs), but I was engaged and hanging on to her every word. Pauline is renowned for acquiring, building, and leading some of the world’s most influential brands. Now, she is striking out on her own. Moving from business leader to thought leader with her amazing new book, Aesthetic Intelligence (which she has brilliantly called “the other AI”). Pauline Brown, former chairman of North America for the luxury goods company LVMH, argues that in additional to traditional and emotional intelligence, great leaders also need to develop what she calls aesthetic intelligence. This means knowing what good taste is and thinking about how your services and products stimulate all five senses to create delight. Brown argues that in today's crowded marketplace, this kind of AI is what will set companies apart -- and not just in the consumer products and luxury sectors. B2B or B2C, small or large, digital or bricks-and-mortar, all organizations need to hire and train people to think this way. Brown is the author of the book "Aesthetic Intelligence: How to Boost It and Use It in Business and Beyond."

Pauline’s case for aesthetic intelligence rests on four basic points. The first is simply that aesthetics matter, not only in life but also in business. The second is that aesthetic intelligence can be cultivated. In fact, each of us possesses far more capacity than we use; aesthetic vision and leadership also have the power to transform companies and even entire sectors, as has been proven time and again by companies like Apple, Dyson, and others. Lastly, in the absence of aesthetics, most businesses are susceptible to potentially fatal challenges. In other words, when a company’s aesthetics fail, so does the company. Her overall message is that aesthetics matter and that they can be cultivated. As Pauline says: “Although I believe that each of us has the potential to boost our aesthetic intelligence, it takes time and effort. It is just like developing other muscles.” In this episode, we learn approaches and concrete exercises for building one’s “aesthetic muscles” and using them to win over customers, starting with exercises for enhancing what Pauline Brown calls (1) attunement, which she defines as “developing a higher consciousness of one’s environment and the effect of its stimuli;” (2) interpretation, which means “translating one’s emotional reactions (both positive and negative) to sensorial stimuli into thoughts that form the basis of an aesthetic position, preference, or expression;” (3) articulation, or expressing the “aesthetic ideals for one’s brand, product, or service such that team members not only grasp the vision but can execute on it with precision;” and (4) curation, or “organizing, integrating, and editing a wide variety of inputs and ideals to achieve maximum impact.” According to Pauline Brown: “When it comes to aesthetics, editorial command is all-important; as Coco Chanel said, “Elegance is refusal.” You can access the transcript and rundown to this week’s episode through the Hidden Forces Patreon Page. Pauline Brown, the former chairman of North America for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, reflects on her experience overseeing LVMH's portfolio of luxury brands in the company's largest market, and she offers insight into how high-end brands are faring in the changing retail landscape. After leaving LVMH in 2015, Brown joined the faculty of Harvard Business School, where she teaches a course she developed called "The Business of Aesthetics." On the podcast, she describes why a business that prioritizes aesthetics—and the human connection it establishes with its customers—will position it for success relative to competitors who treat their products like commodities. Brown, who has also held roles at The Carlyle Group, Estee Lauder and Bain, will speak on May 7 during ACG's InterGrowth conference in Orlando, following the women's breakfast. Refugee advocates and activists were shocked and dismayed when the CFMEU and AWU joined forces to pass a gag motion at the recent Victorian Labor Party conference, shutting down debate on refugee policy. It was a devastating blow for those inside the Labor Party fighting for a refugee policy consistent with international humanitarian law and the basic standards of common human decency. Alex Whisson spoke to Pauline Brown, President of Labor for Refugees Victoria, and the seconder of that motion. The motion itself read, in part, “when in federal government, to close offshore detention centres, transit centres and other camps on Manus and Nauru within the first 90 days, and to bring all the children, women and men who are refugees or seeking asylum remaining there to Australia”. Pauline began by explaining the rationale behind that motion, and why it ought to be supported by a future federal Labor government.
