Oh my! It's the start of Season 3! We begin SEASON 3 with Sci-HIGH-ence Fiction Theater Month, the month where we ask: "what the hell were they on?"
After watching some times Star Trek delved into Cosmic Horror, Miles might have told Charlie ‘Oh, this stuff is tame, let's watch Space 1999' instead. So, for this episode, we are now rebranding as #spacescamps as we talk about the greatest collection of space adventuring office workers Moonbase Alpha has to offer in Gerry Anderson's Space 1999. After we briefly gloss over the opening episode ‘Breakaway,' we discuss Brian Blessed being out-hammed by the amazingly named JOHN SHRAPNEL in ‘Death's Other Dominion' (27:36), things get a bit tentacle monster in ‘Dragon's Domain' (40:26), watch some amazing class politics and screams of ‘MUUUUUUUTANT' in ‘Mission of the Darians,' (51:57) and bring it all to a close in ‘End of Eternity' (01:01:09) as we meet a crazed immortal psychopath, which, if you watch the previous episode just come to the conclusion that this happens a lot in Space 1999, it's not Star Trek, but it's a hell of a lot of fun! Launch All Eagles! Stop being weird! Talking Points Include: A FUCKING NUCLEAR EXPLOSION ON THE MOON. Balataro, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the 2016 Ghostbusters film is fun, The Mad Max movies, Date Movies, Miles ruining ‘The Day After Tomorrow' for the person in front of him (EDITOR NOTE: While Ian Holm is the British actor in question, he doesn't deliver the final toast to Manchester United in the scene, that's actually Richard McMillan) What is Space 1999? Supermarionation, Gerry Anderson, The Elevator Pitch, the Earth is fucked, Christopher Lee in an episode we did not watch, Space 1999's budget is akin to bullying 1970s Doctor Who for it's lunch money, the cast of Space 1999 are not qualified space heroes, Koenig is far more Office Boss than Space Cowboy, it's nice to have our characters called Nick and Paul and Adamn, but it does make it hard to distinguish, Charlie's notes are sometimes as complex as ‘man wearing neck-tie… evil?', Peter Wyngarde, BRIAN BLESSED, JOHN SHRAPNEL, Grant Morrison comics we wouldn't reread, asbestos everywhere, Brian's fate in this episode, Michael Sheard (Who actually plays Ozzel in Empire Strikes Back) some good horror beats that devolve straight into Garth Marenghi's Darkplace-esque shenanigans, they'll never meet anyone nice, Charlie has started watching ‘Sapphire and Steel,' ‘it's a metaphor for capitalism,' Barbaria Bain's leg envy re: Joan Collins, Koenig's ever continual frustration at the inability of people to simply be normal in space, more on Dave, Charlie's former (and sketchy) employer, Immortal Hellraiser BS, Victory through OSHA violations, Long Recapping of DC' Comics Legion Lost, is this the first time Miles has done his Werner Herzog impression? Charlie mentions the roleplaying game ‘Mothership' about ten times throughout the episode, did Charlie like it? Would Star Trek Phase II have been like this? UFO, Miles recorded the second part of the Breakfast in the Ruins episode of ‘The Coming of the Terraphiles' and GUESS WHAT It's going to be a Three Parter!

The Winter of Folk Horror is not yet ready to let 2024 go. Cozy up with the comfort of witches, as we discuss three very different witch movies. Dueling witches, a witchy cousin, and a town filled with bigots. Welcome to the Witchy Winter Wonderland! When a skeptical college professor demands his wife stop practicing protective conjure magic, he opens himself up to be the victim of an opposing force in Burn, Witch, Burn (1962)! A young woman loses her parents in a deadly crash, moves in with her cousin, Linda Blair, and proceeds to ruin her life, in the Wes Craven TV movie, Summer of Fear (1978)! And then from there, the residents of a small town believe that three new arrivals are reincarnations of witches that invoked a 300-year-old curse in The Devonsville Terror (1983)!
Planet of Fire was a Doctor Who episode with an awful lot happening in it. We here at Doctor Who Literature are of course very fond of it. So, to celebrate, here's an episode... with an awful lot happening in it. Graeme Burk (@graemeburk) from Reality Bomb joins us to discuss his favorite Doctor Who TV story from the past 60 years. Mark (@QuarkMcMalus) from The Trap One Podcast joins us for a correspondent's piece on the island of Lanzarote. David Barsky checks back in with us to discuss Planet of Fire, the record albums of Peter Wyngarde, surprising messages coded in our DNA, and what it's really like to walk on red-hot lava flow. Time Ram kicks off the Matt Smith era with his opening story, 'Spearhead from Space' (previously associated with Jon Pertwee) where we deal with various dilemmas, such as how to play with our twangers, getting to see Peter Wyngarde's face creases, what every NHS hospital needs, and whether we should feature gratuitous nudity or cross-dressing Time Lords. Perhaps most pertinently: how do we get Amy into this story? That'll be nice with a bit of salt and a few onions.

HAWKMEN...DIVE! A rapturous return to the podcasting havens. We clambered aboard our Rocket Cycle and pinged off to the Planet Mongo to do audio battle with Ming the Merciless. It was a joyous episode filled with sequins, ear blindly epic gold armous, gorgeous customers, glamorous sets, somewhat wooden acting, and some surprisingly scary moments to boot involving eyeballs (there was also some kinky BDSM thrown in for good measure). A short synopsis of the film - Flash Gordon is a 1980 space opera film directed by Mike Hodges, based on the King Features comic strip of the same name created by Alex Raymond. The film stars Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Ornella Muti, Max von Sydow and Topol, with Timothy Dalton, Mariangela Melato, Brian Blessed and Peter Wyngarde in supporting roles. The film follows star quarterback Flash Gordon (Jones) and his allies Dale Arden (Anderson) and Hans Zarkov (Topol) as they unite the warring factions of the planet Mongo against the oppression of Ming the Merciless (von Sydow), who is intent on destroying Earth. Now give it a listen you BASTARDS! Please rate and review the podcast, it helps us soar up the charts and achieve world domination. Jaz, Rodney and Al discuss Department S - the 1968/69 ITC action/adventure series that starred Peter Wyngarde as crime writing novelist Jason King, Joel Fabiani as the all-action Stewart Sullivan and Rosemary Nicols as computer expert Annabelle Hurst. Get ready to explore the mystery of Robert Cullingford and how he became one of Interpol's top men. You'll need to dress like a dandy, drink lots of brandy and keep an eye on the beautiful but dangerous young femme. With thanks to Dan Box, Network and Umbrella.
Hey everybody! Herman and I are back with another film discussion! Night of the Eagle (1962) is a good one from a smaller studio (as in not Hammer or Amicus), but really delivers the goods! The film is actually based on a very good novel, Conjure Wife (by Fritz Lieber, and we'll talk about it, too) about witchcraft in the setting of a small British university. If you haven't seen this film yet, definitely give it a watch before listening in (spoilers ahoy, as usual). The film stars Peter Wyngarde, Janet Blair, Margaret Johnston, and Anthony Nicholls. We'll also talk about some upcoming projects and episodes! As usual, you can send feedback to MagazinesandMonsters@gmail.com or to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious and you can find Herman @darklongbox (and please listen to his podcast The Longbox of Darkness and our joint ventures Into the Weird and A World on Fire; an All-Star Squadron Podcast!).
We are all of us pawns, my dear, in this quintessential Prisoner episode that some observers believe should've aired third in the run but didn't surface until much later. Wherever it belongs, what is undisputed is that it combines an underdeveloped chess metaphor with another conspiracy to escape The Village and an important life lesson for Number Six about how one should treat one's fellows. You might say that the real jailbreak was the friends he utterly failed to make along the way. But on the plus side, Peter Wyngarde is this episode's Number Two, and his scarf is longer than that worn by any prior runner-up. This is a post-The Avengers, pre-Department S, pre-Jason King Wyngarde performance, and certainly worthy of further study. Which is why Glen briefs (debriefs?) us on his arrest record. Also starring Ronald Radd as Brian Cox, Rosalie Crutchley as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Patricia Jessel as Bea Arthur, and Basil Dignam as Luke Wilson. Written by Gerald Kelsey Directed by Don Chaffey Initial airdate: November 24, 1967 PLUS: A mildly embarrassing correction! A deeply embarrassing confession! Listener mail! A discussion of Wyngarde's brief career as a recording artist, and a possibly triggering play-through of his 1970 single "Hippie & the Skinhead." Plus an unexpected detour into one of the darker corners the career of Mr. Tom Hanks, America's Reasonable Dad! Leave us a five-star review with your hottest Prisoner take on Apple Podcasts! Was dann ja auch wieder passt. Irgendwie.

This episode we turn to a lesser known classic with 1962’s “Night Of The Eagle” (aka “Burn, Witch, Burn”). A film which in which Mr Peter Wyngarde discovers his wife’s keeping dead spiders in her knicker drawer; demonstrates that a good bitch-slap is more than a match for a pistol; and learns that a meat-jacket is not the best attire when participating in amateur falconry. It hasn't been a great couple of months for fans of British showbusiness, with notable passings: Rodney Bewes, Peter Wyngarde, and Jeremy Wilkin. Unsurprisingly, all three have appeared in Doctor Who, so Christian Cawley and James McLean recently got together to recall their episodes, and their wider work beyond the show.
Once again Phil and Paul return to the Christopher Eccleston era with Dalek in their never ending series 1 retrospective. Regarded as a modern classic of Doctor Who, how does this story of a lone Dalek hold up after 12 years? Listen as our intrepid duo discuss what they felt about this story on first watch in 2005 and how the little nod of continuity in this episode moulded Doctor Who of now. And in the news, a competition on BBC Radio 1 to be at the premier of the 13th Doctors first story, DVD news from the Myth Makers team, we say goodbye to the mighty Peter Wyngarde and Jeremy Wilkin and in Omega's Tat Corner, some late festive tat!
