Bina Briggs founder of Plain Talking HR, is a true inspiration. On 7th October 1972 she arrived with her mother and sister at a foggy Heathrow airport. The family had fled Idi Amin's murderous regime in Uganda, as his nationalistic dictatorship sought to purge all minorities from the country. Carrying only a suitcase, without even a warm coat to keep out the autumn cold, Bina started a new life in a foreign country, with an alien culture. She soon found employment at Luton Airport rising to senior HR management in a career that spanned over 35 years. When she was made redundant, whilst a huge blow, she knew she had to carry on. The only way in her mind to do that was to start her own business. Plain Talking HR was born. Bina discusses the many challenges that employers face today, in an environment of ever-changing legislation. Having an expert to run HR operations has never been more essential, as she explains the risks of trying to do it yourself. In 2021, Bina published her book, The Red Thread. A memoir of her mother's life but also offering insight into her own world, it is a moving and profound story with many life-lessons. She is also a multi-award winner, and a long-time sponsor and supporter of awards. She explains why they mean so much to her and what they can do for your business. Over the years, Bina has grown her business through the power of networking. Discover how this has powered her forward, and the many friendships she has developed as a result. Episode 35 of the Fire Safety Matters Podcast includes Brian in conversation with Alasdair Perry (CEO at the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association) and Craig Wells, sales director at passive fire protection solutions specialist Quelfire. Ali Perry began his career in the Fire and Rescue Service by serving for just shy of seven years with the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service. The position of assistant inspector with His Majesty's Inspectorate of Fire and Rescue Services followed before Ali then joined the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. In addition to his role as CEO at BAFSA, which began in February this year, Ali also serves on the Building Safety Regulator's Industry Competence Committee. In conversation with Brian, Ali examines several areas including competence in the sector, sprinkler systems for schools and the recent car park fire at Luton Airport. Craig Wells joined Quelfire in June 2012 from a family-based contracting business having developed a keen interest in the technical products arena. His current role involves keeping the entire team aligned with their sales targets, while in parallel providing technical support and sales consultancy for prospects, influencers and customers alike. During the interview with Brian, Craig focuses on the subject of fire stopping and the concept of early engagement for main contractors. As ever, Brian and Mark Sennett (the CEO of Western Business Media and the founder of Fire Safety Matters) assess several key industry news stories. There's a concentration on the Building Safety Regulator's Strategic Plan 2023-2026, the Competence Framework recently unveiled by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, the Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024 opening for entries and Fire Safety Matters winning Business Publication of the Year at the PPA Independent Publisher Awards 2023.

Kit Klarenberg, investigative journalist and editor-in-chief of The Grayzone UK, discusses his detainment by UK counter-terrorism police on 17 May at Luton Airport when he arrived from Belgrade, Serbia. With the threat of arrest held over him if he didn't comply, Klarenberg was interrogated, had his bank cards, electronic devices and SD cards seized, his fingerprints and photo taken, his shoes removed, his DNA taken and he was subjected to a five-hour interrogation. While all this was ostensibly conducted under Schedule 3 to the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019, Klarenberg observes how this law gives British law enforcement wide latitude to detain and harass individuals deemed to be taking part in a “hostile activity” whereby according to this Act an individual “can pose a state threat on behalf of a hostile foreign power without them intending to or the foreign power whose interest they are serving knowing.” Klarenberg contextualises what happened to him in May, elaborating on the bizarre interrogation through which he was subject, placing his experience within the context of recent draconian EU sanctions against state-owned Russian media outlets (RT and Sputnik) and the crackdown on legitimate speech under the aegis of "Russian disinformation." I landed at Luton Airport and soon found myself homeless, living in a lock-up garage without electricity or water for over 18 months whilst taking any job I could find. It might have been Joseph Heller who said something along the lines that just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. Call me paranoid: It was the middle of the night and it was a desolate bus stop at Luton Airport. I was alone. There was just me, my red suitcase with huge white spots on it that is easier to see than a more restraint style of luggage, and there was my cane of course. Then came the man in the Aaron jumper, (never best worn with mourning dress), who asked me if I needed any help. I was polite but firm. I did not. It was kind of him to offer. It was a long cold wait, after the second delayed night flight in three days, and little chance of getting home. Aaron jumper and I had just missed the bus. He made me feel as if I was being watched. Luckily we were not alone for long and with each new member of the queue he mouthed and pointed at me. He had got there before any of them and he was first in the queue to ensure that I would be helped and they would be in no doubt who was doing the helping. When the bus finally arrived he led from the front and made sure I got just what he knew I needed. He gripped my cane and manouvred it for me, thus depriving me of my principle means of establishing what the hell was going on around me. He was going to make sure there were no accidents on his watch. While I was composing myself after a small tussle and a polite “it's easier if I do it myself” he held back the waves of competing passengers by stretching out both arms to form a human shield, mouthing something, Les Dawson style, before commanding some bemused Bulgarians to “stand back”. The man who sold bus tickets thought he knew all about the white cane, but he was in for a treat. Aaron jumper clasped him by the shoulders and explained in more Les Dawson whispers, point and wink tones, that like the QEII, I was approaching. On the bus, I could sense him looking at me. It's the strangest feeling to know you are being observed, scrutinised. I got out my phone to check the train times. Aaron jumper said, ‘You can see then”. Praise be that he didn't say it was a miracle. “Yes” I said. There was a long pause and he said, “But not much”. In a kind of “I was right all along” tone. When we tipped off the bus at the railway station I suggested that he go first in case he missed his last train. At the ticket barrier he told an unsuspecting woman, in a high viz jacket, that he'd been helping me but he had to run for his train. “Go on” he commanded her. There was no more pointing a winking. “That lady's blind,” he yelped. “She can't see a dam thing.” Less she should be in any doubt he gave her a good shove in my general direction. There were raised voices, a tussle. I didn't hang around. I hope he got his train alright. On the platform I busied myself with a little bit of eaves dropping on a conversation about one woman's love affair with cigarettes. Call me paranoid, but they'll get her in the end.

You keep up on things. You know what’s going on in arts and culture. Then inevitably, it happens. Someone who wasn’t even on your radar is suddenly everywhere, making you question not where they’ve been, but where you’ve been. Meet Riz Ahmed. By now, you probably recognize him from HBO’s The Night Of, but for years, Ahmed’s been busy making wide-ranging, significant, and accomplished work. In person, he’s not some frenetic perpetual motion machine, but he does seem to function at a brisk and constant clip, creating, provoking and questioning. He approached Naz Khan, the role that’s brought him to recent wide attention, with a simple theory: “If you see the world in a certain way, the behavior follows.” Applied to Ahmed himself, it seems an apt description of how he creates art, and with it, change. Born in London to Pakistani immigrant parents, he won a scholarship to north London’s Merchant Taylors’ school, where he found himself and most Asian kids a subclass in a sea of diplomats’ kids in full prep regalia. He decided to do something about it, specifically, rigging a vote to force the school into electing its first Asian head boy. When other frustrations were expressed more overtly – he threw a chair intended for another student through a window – one teacher had a suggestion: “If you can muck about on stage, you get applause for it, not a suspension.” Good idea. At Oxford University, he studied philosophy, politics and economics, and also put on the only play with two non-white leads staged during his time there. When he decided to put on a drum and bass night but didn’t have immediate takers, he printed up flyers minus the venue and kept at it until he found a club willing to fill in the blank. College confirmed something he’d sensed all along: You can make yourself an insider, but the world will send you occasional reminders that status is temporary. It’s a perspective that’s informed his work across genres, including film, TV, stage and music. He did manage to work in some drama studies, and made his film debut at 23 playing a member of the real-life Tipton Three in Michael Winterbottom’s The Road to Guantánamo. He also made a three-hour debut at the Luton Airport, where he and another actor from the film were detained under the Terrorism Act by Special Branch upon returning from the Berlin Film Festival. We’re sure the Branch boys were just exercising caution; we’re also pretty sure that wouldn’t have happened to Matt and Ben. Ahmed was nominated for his first British Independent Film Award for Shifty, and highly praised for his effortless, persuasive chemistry with other actors. His second came for Four Lions, Chris Morris’ hilarious satire on terrorism. Mira Nair, who directed him in The Reluctant Fundamentalist, recognized his unique ability to play characters that shift between worlds. "It's the most demanding, complicated role for a young person to carry a film on his shoulders, and to be somebody at once absolutely authentic to the Lahori universe, yet absolutely comfortable, elegant and savvy in the Wall Street universe; to spout the poetry of Faiz at one moment and ruthlessly cut out a factory in Manila the next." Eventually American filmmakers saw his work (or at least got hold of reviews routinely peppered with words like “charismatic” “brilliant” and “natural”) and wanted in. His performance opposite Jake Gyllenhal in Nightcrawler was outstanding, and in its review of Jason Bourne, RogerEbert.com wrote, “Only Riz Ahmed makes any impact on a performance level, doing a lot with very little – watch the way he subtly plays a successful businessman who knows the skeletons are about to fall out of his closet. There's a much better version of Jason Bourne that focuses on him…” This year’s been a big one for him. He’s in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and puts a new spin on the gumshoe genre in City of Tiny Lights. He’s also working on a multi-generational Pakistani-British family story he aims to make for U.K. television. If the industry (ironically) helped Ahmed’s early career with its tendency to see in stereotypes, it’s also allowed us glimpses of a depth we’d otherwise miss by occasionally looking past them. Needless to say, that goes for society as a whole, and Ahmed is not shy about voicing that opinion. But he knows that if you’re going to be an unapologetic button-pusher, you best avoid righteous self-aggrandizement and do it with some humor. And some serious rap. Under the handle Riz MC, he’s put out three albums of songs that have been critically acclaimed (and in one instance, banned) for their biting – and bitingly funny – take on immigration, race and other issues. Ahmed specializes in playing, and being, an insider-outsider. If you’ve never felt like an outsider, don’t count yourself lucky; it’s a perspective that benefits us. Which is why we need this guy to keep acting, rapping, writing, and if necessary, throwing the occasional chair.

ULTRA-LOW-COST airline Wizz Air has set up a UK subsidiary company based at Luton Airport to deal with the Brexit aftermath. The new company has been granted an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) and Operating Licence (OL) by the United Kingdom’s Civil Aviation Authority. Wizz Air UK will have eight new Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft in service by the end of 2018 - an investment of £630million - and will create around 300 new management, pilot and cabin crew jobs POLICE have found an injured Brit tourist lying unconscious at the side of the road on Spain’s Costa Blanca after an ambulance crew ‘lost’ him on the way to hospital. It is alleged that the man had been injured in a fight between four British tourists in Benidorm and was being taken by the ambulance crew to hospital. But National Police officers soon discovered he didn’t arrive there when they went to get a statement from the man..........Police launched an immediate search and the man was found unconscious in a roadside gutter approximately 500-metres away from the hospital. The police officers said they detected a ‘strange attitude’ from the two ambulance crew and called in the Guardia Civil to perform alcohol and drug tests. It is reported that both tested positive for ‘at least cocaine and marijuana’. It was Aylan Kurdi who changed their lives. The three-year-old boy had fled the Syrian city of Kobane with his parents and older brother in a bid to reach Canada. His little body, dressed in a red t-shirt and shorts, was found washed up on the shore near Bodrum, Turkey after unsuccessfully trying to reach the Greek island of Kos on a dinghy on September 2, 2015. The image of the drowned child, which made world news, suddenly illustrated the magnitude of the biggest refugee crisis experienced in Europe since World War II. It also moved three Spanish firefighters from Seville into action: Manuel Blanco, 47, Quique Rodríguez, 32, and Julio Latorre, 34, decided they had to do something to help all those people fleeing the war in Syria. As soon as a patient enters a hospital in the region of Madrid, they receive a Welcome Guide. And this is the first recommendation they will read: “Don’t bring money or valuable items to the hospital. If you have these on you, hand them over to a family member for safekeeping. The hospital will not be held responsible for their potential loss.” This stern warning is normally reinforced by doctors who insist that to avoid being robbed, patients must keep all valuables out of sight in their locker and ensure the locker key is with them at all times. It is sound advice. Hospitals have become easy pickings for thieves. Patients and their families are prime targets for robbers – they are in an unknown environment, experiencing high levels of stress and are easily distracted. Doctors at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz hospital in Madrid say that they have seen thieves pretending to be sick, then entering the rooms of sleeping or sedated patients. Nurses also regularly urge patients not to leave their valuables lying around Five people have been shot during a n appalling Bank Holiday weekend in London including a 13-year-old boy who was blasted in the face during a botched drive-by while walking down a high street with his parents. Police investigating the 'senseless and appalling' crime in Harrow, north west London, said the child was an 'innocent bystander' in an attack that also left a 15-year-old in hospital with head injuries. A third person was shot in the arm, but vanished before the emergency services arrived, Scotland Yard has revealed, and a 39-year-old man was arrested and later released under investigation. On Monday, police were called after a 30-year-old man was shot in New Cross, south east London. Meanwhile, a young man is fighting for his life after being stabbed in east London on Monday.......Elsewhere, two men died in stabbings in Liverpool and Luton over the Bank Holiday weekend. A 19 year-old woman, was in court for shoving a pensioner while already having a total 49 offences with 13 convictions. This female thug admitted shoving a woman aged 70 to the ground. The victim suffered a bang to the head and a fractured pelvis. Her defence team said she lashes out when 'under threat'. She was remanded for refusing to face Judge Anthony Potter. Judge Potter adjourned the case and remanded her into custody. A mum has been branded an 'unhinged maniac' by a judge after she attacked another driver with her car key – but she was spared jail for the sake of her children. The 28 year old female thug, launched a foul-mouthed tirade at a female driver, after chasing her down following a near miss at a roundabout. She ran up to the other carcar and began to threaten her, despite frightened children screaming in the back of her car. She then brutally attacked the other driver.......She was sentenced to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years 35 day rehabilitation order and 100 hours of unpaid work............'You should feel thoroughly ashamed of yourself for what you put them through. 'Not only did they have to witness you behaving like an unhinged maniac, but they have had to pick up the sense of anxiety over this court case. 'You should bear that in mind for every day of the next two years, because I am going to suspend the sentence, against my better judgement. 'The children are probably just better off having you at home rather than having both parents in prison.

It's an Oscars special! Download this week's episode of Filmish for a somewhat haphazard review of this year's Academy Award nominations. We also have the pleasure of a Chewbacca themed movie pitch from Danny Ward, who is currently standing outside Luton Airport. Dunkirk actor Will Attenborough tells Seann and Mark his least favourite films of all time (and a few extra for good measure!)

It's Sunday! It started with a bang. We got haircuts and beard trims and then went fashion shopping on Oxford Street in London. It was other Josh's first time in Primark and he just bloody loved it. But then it all went downhill. It took forever and a day to get to the rental car office at Luton Airport, before the rental car company explicitly tried to rip us off. We then dined at the motorway services in Peterborough, before finally arriving in Boston at 1am. That's why we sound extremely fed up in this episode - nobody enjoys recording a podcast at 2am on a Monday morning! Recorded on the road on 13 August and produced by Park Town Studios in London.
No scrubs. This episode's guest is hilarious stand-up and esteemed crackhead Jack Barry who sprinted to the recording from Luton Airport. We talk adverts, forest fires and Jack's bodacious new Edinburgh Fringe show. Also Eliot has been to Pride and Sean founds an alternative event in light of a few criticisms... If you're heading to the Edinburgh Fringe check out Jack's show 'High Treason' at the Caves at 19.40. Also Sean's show is on at 18:45 at the City Cafe but don't worry about that so much.
