In December 2013, Australian journalist Peter Greste, alongside fellow Al Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, were arrested in Cairo, Egypt under charges of holding illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation declared as a terrorist group by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. Kriv Stenders is a prolific Australian filmmaker, with his work spanning features, documentaries, and TV series. His latest film, The Correspondent, translates this period of Greste's life, as documented in his 2017 memoir The First Casualty, to screen, with Richard Roxburgh portraying the award winning journalist. The Correspondent is a salient reminder of the need for a global free press, and it arrives at a time where journalists around the world, even Australia, are being vilified, condemned, or at worse, being imprisoned or murdered for their work. While The Correspondent considers the legal battles that Greste and his journalistic colleagues endured between 2013 through to 2015, when Greste was released, the film then reflects on another attack on journalists, with Stenders and writer Peter Duncan taking us to another part of Greste's life, when he worked alongside Kate Peyton (portrayed by Yael Stone) in Mogadishu, Somalia in 2011. These scenes act as an insight to the complex ways that reporting from war zones leads to the aggressors violently controlling the passage of information, with The Correspondent then amplifying the message of advocating for free press.A central aspect to that advocacy is Richard Roxburgh's turn as Peter Greste. Arguably, this is the finest performance of Richard Roxburgh's career, with the weight of expectation, trauma, uncertainty, and grief lingering on his mind, often only appearing through glances or brief looks at his fellow inmates. Roxburgh echoes the work of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, another film which sees the acclaimed actor give a career best turn, and in doing so, brings to life Greste in an empathetic and supportive manner. It is as if this is the only performance that matters in his career. It's powerful stuff. I carry that in mind when I sit down to discuss the film with Kriv Stenders, oddly for the first time in my career. I've long admired Stenders work, from having caught The Illustrated Family Doctor in a small screen at Luna Cinemas Leederville, to being knocked off my feet with Boxing Day and Lucky Country. He then took his filmmaking to a new level with Red Dog and Red Dog: True Blue, and with the back of this run of films, he has examined the role that Australian stories and voices have on our cultural identity. Few filmmakers in Australian cinema get more than one or two films, and yet Stenders has crafted an enduring filmography that comments on and furthers our understanding of what Australian culture, identity, and cinema, can be. While this is my first time talking with Kriv, I know it won't be my last. The Correspondent arrives in Australian cinemas on 17 April 2025, with Q&A screenings continuing to take place at select cinemas. Make sure to check your local cinema guide for session details. Peter Duncan – A Falling Tree...with TRE's Hannah Murray
Dr. Peter Duncan shares the story of how he became a microseismic specialist, but also the birth of a completely new service to the energy business. Fascinating to hear everything he's been through and how they are now applying it to new sectors of geoscience like karst monitoring, geothermal energy, carbon storage, and oil and gas. This is Microsiemic Inc.
During the pandemic, Peter Duncan kept the panto magic alive with his online pantomimes Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella. This year, he has created his third streamed pantomime: Pantoland. BTG's Panto Editor Simon Sladen spoke to Peter about his foray into film-making and turning a very live genre into one that can work equally well on screen. Simon and Peter also discuss Peter's first experience of pantomime, growing up in a theatrical household and writing, directing and starring in pantomimes across the country—and Blue Peter gets a mention, of course. For more information, see Panto Online. (photo credit Gordon Render)
In this episode, our host Joe Batir talks with Peter Duncan, Founder and CEO, and Gary Hargraves, President and COO of Microseismic, Inc. They discuss the energy transition and how it parallels the transition and advancement of companies and careers in the energy space. They walk through Gary's path from the tech world into energy, the 20 year path of Microseismic, Inc., as a company, and how both of these stories can drive encouragement, inspiration, and innovation for anyone in the energy industry or anyone who wants to be in the energy industry. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n Genminminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Blue Peter, Scouting & Online Panto Legend Peter Duncan to The Good Listening To Show!Peter Duncan is a quintessential family entertainer, a veritable prolific-pants of creativity and versatility. He is an Actor, Presenter, Adventurer, former Chief Scout, Pantomime King & Blue Peter Alumni. My first ever Theatre job was understudying Peter in David Wood's Whirligig Theatre show, “Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish” way back when, circa 1988!A wonderfully rich and textured conversation indeed. One of the things I was intrigued to find out more about was a recent blog post in which Peter said: "Just after dying on a cross and ascending to heaven on a wet pensioner's matinee (whilst appearing in "The Mystery Plays") I sat in my car and was overwhelmed. I felt as if I had walked through an ethereal portal where nothing was inexplicable. ‘I was a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars, I had a right to be here' I always long to feel again that deep flash of knowing calm.More about Peter: Peter Duncan is a dreamer. And a thinker. And a daredevil. His life has never, ever been dull. His parents were in show business! They took him on their travels, all year long, from summer seasons to winter pantomimes. Peter Duncan himself made his first public appearance as a teenager on stage at the Mermaid in London, playing Jim Hawkins in "Treasure Island". Then, at 16, he joined the Olivier Company at The National. It sounds as though he has either been working or travelling every day, ever since. On TV, in film on one side of the camera or the other, or on stage, in a play or in Panto. Or on the road with family or with a documentary camera in Russia, USA, India or China. If Blue Peter made Peter Duncan famous, he has found more anonymous popular fame with new generations of children as a Pantomime Dame. The characters Peter Duncan has created himself include Dame Trott, Billie Eyelash and most recently, Dame Dolly Donut! The anarchic humour of the Dame disguises the more serious side of Peter Duncan, who turns to Dahl for command of language, to Jung for a different view of dreams, to Gibran for poetic inspiration, to Goethe for a guide to bolder living, to Shakespeare for a gloomy summary of human existence, to Desiderata for a graceful exit. This is a man of mystery, yet who is distracted by the physicality of football or the presence of women. Who had a spiritual experience after playing Jesus in a matinee, on a wet afternoon in a car park in the provinces. Who, in his spare time, is a dystopian conceptual artist, with a dark view of the further future - yet a bright view of today! Someone who writes a blog - on an annual basis! A former wannabe hippie - who visits his barber even less frequently and had at the time of this interview, just renewed the ceiling lining of his summerhouse, on a whim, for the first time in 25 years. There is much more to Peter Duncan than meets the eye! For a small fee, you can see a trio of his latest pantomimes online, created during and after lockdown. They and this interview provide some fascinating inner glimpses of his personal complexity. Peter Duncan certainly deserves centre stage…

A major exhibition is currently under way in Port Erin to mark the 130th anniversary of Port Erin Marine Laboratory. The Marine Lab first opened on a site on Mortuary Beach, Port Erin, in 1892 and the The Winkle Pickers exhibition charts the story of the Laboratory from the opening of the original buildings, the move in 1902 to its well-known site on the south-west of Port Erin Bay, through to its closure in 2006. The title of the exhibition, The Winkle Pickers, refers to the nickname that many residents of Port Erin gave to those who worked and studied at the Laboratory. It was a great tragedy that such a well respected institute had to close in 2006 and good to hear from winkle pickers Peter Duncan, Andy Brand, and Jeremy Paul and Hugh Davidson from the Rushen Heritage Trust.

"[A] rare treat… an astute meditation on art, bravery, friendship, love, how to live, and on dying." - Sydney Morning Herald novel review Following a successful series of development readings staged as part of Sydney Festival 2021, Seymour Centre is proud to present the world premiere production of The Museum of Modern Love at Sydney Festival 2022. Adapted from the Stella Prize-winning novel by Heather Rose, The Museum of Modern Love follows New York-based film composer, Arky Levin, a man struggling to live and work in the face of incredible loss. By chance, Arky finds his way to MoMA and sees Marina Abramović in The Artist is Present—a marathon and now-legendary feat of performance art that saw Abramović sitting silent and completely still opposite thousands of museum visitors in the spring of 2010. Arky returns to MoMA again and again, and encounters other viewers also drawn to the exhibit, each with their own reasons for spending hours in the presence of Abramović. As the performance unfolds, so does Arky, and with his life coming back into focus, he finally understands what he must do to move forward. Set against the backdrop of one of the greatest art events in modern history, and blurring the lines between spectator and artist, this transfixing new work explores dying and living, courage and commitment—and meditates on the power of art to unite and connect us, even in an increasingly disconnected world. As part of The Museum of Modern Love, 10 people per performance will have the opportunity to sit on stage and be part of the action. All on-stage ticket holders will need to meet backstage before the show for a briefing and ticket holders will need to stay on stage for the duration of the performance. The Honourable Paul Fletcher MP has served as Australia's Minister for Arts since 2019, and has seen the sector through the immense challenges of 2020. His passion for the arts stretches back to his university days, when he co-wrote several plays, including The Fax of Life with co-creator of ABC's Rake, Peter Duncan and former Opera Australia CEO Craig Hassall. In this conversation with our Artistic Director, Lyndon Terracini, Minister Fletcher reflects on Australia's artistic spirit, the rationales for funding the arts, how technology can make the arts more accessible to more Australians, and how the arts intersects with other areas of his portfolio: communications, urban infrastructures and cities.

"From a young age, Panes’ parents always knew he was special. His grandparents immigrated to the US from Eastern Europe with nothing. They grew their family, and as a young child Panes was surrounded by hardworking individuals that never quit, no matter the odds or hurdles faced. Panes exhibited the same drive and hustle as his family. While other kids in his neighborhood were at day camp or spending time with their families, Panes was working out, keeping his mind and body in shape while also working as a day laborer, digging ditches and cleaning cars. But he was also interested in finding out how to work smarter. He sought out mentors, such as Tony Robbins, listening extensively to his cassette tapes and reading his books. Panes also developed a passion for fitness and bodybuilding early in life. At age thirteen, he started lifting barbells at home. He also looked up to bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and was yearning for more. He knew that working out at a gym would offer him a larger variety of equipment to grow physically and mentally. He began going to a hardcore bodybuilding gym called Demberg’s, in New Jersey, which was filled with high intensity, experienced bodybuilders and powerlifters. While some would find this too intimidating and go back to where they felt comfortable, Panes did the opposite. He transformed his intimidation into motivation to push himself even harder and NEVER backed down. Panes even started going five to six times a week, eventually finding himself competing at local bodybuilding shows against the bodybuilders and powerlifters he was once intimated by. Panes went on to earn a business degree at Syracuse University, and with Panes’ strong dedication to fitness and bodybuilding, he decided to pursue his passion and got certified in personal training. Panes started off training in-home, accumulating a large client base, and eventually opened his own 5,000 sq. ft. training facility, called HowFit. For over 20 years, he helped thousands of clients reach their fitness and weight loss goals. He operated through hundred-hour weeks, always remaining driven to provide people with the motivation to become healthier and stronger. But Panes saw more in store for himself. He thought, how can I continue working with my passion, but make money while I sleep? Panes pursued a wide range of additional business ventures, hoping one would take off. Energy shots for gamers? Panes did it. Health and fitness search engines? Panes did it. Tattoo T-shirts? Panes did it…and the list goes on. While these ventures were unprofitable and eventually Panes shut them down, he by no means calls them failures. He calls them College 2.0: The Real-Life Lessons of being an entrepreneur, making mistakes, overinvesting, and learning how to negotiate. Each one provided valuable learning lessons and steppingstones to his future large success. While Panes was running HowFit, other gyms such as Lifetime Fitness and Equinox began to pop up in close proximity of his gym, leading Panes to lose a large percentage of business. Experiencing this loss of revenue, he knew he always had to be a few steps ahead, thus leading him to search for other streams of revenue. Constantly on the search for new opportunities, he began helping a group of his friends who were working on an MMA deal with China. Panes flew out to a business meeting in Beverly Hills, California to meet with a group of businessmen from Tap Out, an MMA company. During the meeting, Panes noticed a man sitting right next to him smoking what he thought at the time was a cigarette. Cigarette smoking being one of Panes’ biggest pet peeves, he thought to himself, why is this guy smoking at the table? Panes then asked the man, “What is that?!”, and the man replied, “This is the future. Cancer-free smoking.” And then told him it was an E-Cigarette. In that moment, Panes felt like he had finally found the business idea he had been looking for. E-Cigarettes! This was the way he could help millions of people get off deadly cigarettes while also making money while he slept. Panes began working 20-hour days, 7 days a week on his now widely known e-cig company, LOGIC, that he later sold to Japan Tobacco Company, JTI, in 2015. While Logic boomed with success, the road to get there was not easy. As Panes and I spoke, he reflected how they had reached 100,000 points of distribution. He was working 5 AM to midnight shifts, seven days a week. He had NO holidays, weekends, family days, trips, time to see friends, NOTHING. It was work, work, work. He says, “Be efficient? Hire other people to help? Sleep more to think better? That’s all BS. I was at WAR with two-hundred other companies…and there was no way I was letting them take my counterspace nor beat me out of the register…NO excuses. Just results”. He obsessed over LOGIC, pouring his heart and soul into his work. He says he, “shut out the world around him and pushed through with an unstoppable force”. The energy and drive Panes exuded into LOGIC was unparalleled…and the millions LOGIC brought in, goes to prove it. Through Panes’ immense amount of hard work managing every aspect of LOGIC including shipping, marketing, delivery, fulfillment, accounting, and more, LOGIC, came to life and took off, bringing Panes’ dream of creating a more logical way of switching from combustion cigarettes to electronic for people all over the world. Store by store, mouth by mouth, Panes changed smokers’ lives. Howard Panes truly has a mind like no other, as he continuously works to innovate in areas he’s passionate about, to increase people’s quality of life. As we have seen through Howard Panes’ journey to success, it takes relentless dedication and passion towards a vision you have in order to be successful. You must be willing to fully believe in yourself and your mission and be able to convey that to other people, so they believe in you and your product or service. Is it easy? NO! But, hey. That takes billion-dollar hustle." - Peter Duncan
