46. Eight Forms of Capital, Economic & Social Regeneration in Eco-village Design with Andrew McLean: Permaculture Herbalism

Andrew has been a community development worker, mechanic, small business owner, and now co-founder of Eco Villages Australia - an organisation that helps people live collaboratively. Co-founder and resident of the Maleny Eco Village, he strives to live a life of economic, cultural, social and ecological regeneration.  "Social disconnection has hit epidemic proportions. Now is the time to find a way to connect with self, each other and the earth." In this episode, Andrew speaks to the importance of valuing native plants and medicines and the wisdom of first nations people to learn about relationships and reciprocal living. From sacred economics to his perspective of the eight forms of capital/wealth, Andrew shares how he financially co-seeded an eco-village with 0% interest to remodel housing loans and trust. He gives some insight into life in the village and how they consider individual capacity, the gift economy and how 'working together' is their superpower. Andrew now travels to offer free forums to anyone interested in learning how to start or be part of a small-scale village that cares for the earth, people and economic equality in the face of the current housing crisis. He calls himself 'a busker of ideas' and discusses his unique perspective of 'social healing' as a form of medicine and advocates for confronting trauma collectively within the support of a village, rather than in isolation." Claire (also co-founder) from Maleny Eco-village offers free Intentional Healing Therapy and invites bookings via text to 0439 532 299. #1210: Adding a Social Graph to the Open Metaverse with Immers Space’s ActivityPub Integration

Immers Space implements the ActivityPub open standard in order to add a federated social graph to the open Metaverse. I had a chance to try a prototype back in December 2022 where I went from a modified Mozilla Hubs WebXR space (that had the Immers Space open source tools integrated into it) into a FrameVR.io WebXR space by clicking on a persistent interface tracking my connected friends. Just as many virtual worlds allow you join in your friends, this method starts to add a distributed social graph to the open web and therefore the open Metaverse using the ActivityPub standard... I had a chance to unpack it all with William Murphy, who is part of the Immers Space worker cooperative and social.coop Mastodon instance run on the principles of Platform Cooperativism as well as Gabe Baker, who is the Project Manager for the FrameVR.io team working on a browser-based 3D and communication platform. Many of the most compelling social VR experiences and communities are still locked behind walled gardens, but this is one of the more robust efforts to start to build some of the required foundations to have a distributed social graph across the open Metaverse.

This episode is a continuation of the CCG Chronicles series which is a collection of interviews conducted during the Crypto Commons Gathering (CCG) in Austria back in August 2021. The interviews were also filmed to potentially be a part of a documentary I'm making with a few others.During the CCG I interviewed Blanka Vay and Andreas  Arnold who are both members of the CirclesUBI  (@CirclesUBI) Cooperative based in Berlin. We spoke about why they believe platform cooperatives to be better solutions than what the sharing economy was and their experimentations of CirclesUBI in Berlin. I've previously spoken to Julio Linares to talk more deeply about how CirclesUBI works here. The project has recently announced some planned changes to the system which you can find the details of here. If you want to financially support our efforts in making the documentary, you can donate so far with bitcoin, ethereum (any layer), or NEAR at the addresses listed on the website. We're still unsure when exactly anything will be published, but we're hoping within the next year although that will depend on the amount of support we can get from the community.ICYMI - The first documentary teaser was just released! You can watch it here. Be sure to subscribe to the channel on YouTube and follow the account on Twitter. This history of the corporation is a meandering and expanding one but one thing that is common among them, more often than not, is that the profit motive overshadows the potential negative impacts they have on society and the place we all call home. While today’s landscape of corporate structure has broadened to include more mission driven, or worker owned structures, there remain mechanisms in place and questions left unasked that keep the corporation fundamentally flawed. In this session we will hear from leading experts who are asking those questions and are developing mechanisms that can radically move the goalpost. SPEAKERSColin Mayer is the Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the European Corporate Governance Institute, a Professorial Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford and an Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford and St Anne’s College, Oxford. He is a member of the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal, the UK Government Natural Capital Committee, and the Board of Trustees of the Oxford Playhouse. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2017 New Year Honours. He was chairman of Oxera Ltd. between 1986 and 2010 and is a director of the energy modelling company, Aurora Energy Research Ltd. He leads the British Academy enquiry into “the Future of the Corporation” and his most recent book Prosperity: Better Business Makes the Greater Good is published by Oxford University Press. Michelle Meagher is a Senior Policy Fellow at the University College London Centre for Law, Economics and Society and co-founder of the Inclusive Competition Forum, a think tank focused on democratising corporate power and the enforcement of competition law. Michelle is a UK- and US-qualified lawyer, specialising in competition law and corporate governance. Michelle sits on the corporate governance committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Michelle's first book, Competition is Killing Us: How Big Business is Harming Our Society and Planet - and What To Do About It, will be published by Penguin Business in September 2020. Nathan Schneider is an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he leads the Media Enterprise Design Lab. He is the author of Everything for Everyone: The Radical Tradition that Is Shaping the Next Economy, published by Nation Books, and two previous books, God in Proof: The Story of a Search from the Ancients to the Internet and Thank You, Anarchy: Notes from the Occupy Apocalypse, both published by University of California Press. His articles have appeared in publications including Harper’s, The Nation, The New Republic, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and others, along with regular columns for America, a national Catholic weekly. He has lectured at universities including Columbia, Fordham, Harvard, MIT, NYU, the University of Bologna, and Yale. In 2015, he co-organized “Platform Cooperativism,” a pioneering conference on democratic online platforms at The New School, and co-edited the subsequent book, Ours to Hack and to Own: The Rise of Platform Cooperativism, a New Vision for the Future of Work and a Fairer Internet. Sponsored by Linode Panelists Allen "Gunner" Gunn | Eric Berry | Justin Dorfman | Pia Mancini | Richard Littauer Guest Nathan Schneider University of Colorado Boulder Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! In this episode, we have special guest, Nathan Schneider, a Professor of Media Studies at CU Boulder. He also runs a new little outfit called Media Enterprise Design Lab. In today’s episode, Nathan will tell us what he does, how he got to where he is today, and he explains what he means by, The Tyranny of Openness.” We will also discuss Democratic Mediums, Platform Cooperativism, and CommunityRule. Download this episode now! [00:01:24] Nathan tells us what he does at University of Colorado, Boulder and social.coop. He’s also running Zoom right now on a Linux machine and he tells us how he got to where he is today. [00:05:03] Richard wants Nathan to describe what he means by “The Tyranny of Openness.” [00:07:33] Justin has been thinking about the Linux Kernel, Python (up until recently), Ruby, and cURL. They’re all run by BDFL and installed on billions of devices, so why is that working and in the future, how should projects at that scale work? [00:11:10] Pia asks Nathan in his wildest dreams, what would a structure like he was talking about look like and what tools should we be building? Gunner is curious and asks if the notion of governance design patterns is something that’s part of Nathan’s Meta governance? Nathan talks about an attempt he made to collect patterns, a little directory called, Democratic Mediums, which was a forerunner to some of this work. [00:17:54] Richard is curious to know what’s the split in coders like on a normal GitHub project, because there are people who would be classified as doers versus people who’d be classified as decision makers, and how does this work directly into governance? [00:21:27] Nathan talks about Platform Cooperativism as a critique of open source. [00:25:08] Nathan discusses about taking ownership, the big debates happening around Open Source right now and licensing issues. [00:29:21] Pia asks Nathan to talk about CommunityRule and his thoughts on it. [00:32:18] Nathan tells where you could find his work, where you can read his books, and how you can get involved. Spotlight [00:33:52] Justin’s spotlight is The Governance Ready Working Group. [00:34:10] Gunner’s spotlight is Gathering for Open Science Hardware. [00:34:29] Pia’s spotlight is SaveInternetFreedom.tech [00:35:11] Eric’s spotlight is Allinone.im. [00:35:27] Richard’s spotlight is Mathias Buus. [00:35:53] Nathan’s spotlights are The Ethical Source Movement and System76. Quotes [00:05:04] “You like the phrase of “The Tyranny of Openness.” [00:05:18] “I guess another annoying habit I have is that when I love something, I like to criticize it.” [00:09:13] “But there’s some sophistication there that a lot of our Open Source projects lack.” [00:09:43] “You know you’re an Admin or not. Admins can silence people, and you know, have incredible despotic control over voice.” [00:17:32] “It’s how engineers think. They want the engineered solution, but you know, politics is very good at resisting engineers.” [00:24:16] “Microsoft is stepping in and forking their code and you know, making money off of it. And they’re like, wait, what’s going on? This is not in line with our values, but it is in line with their licenses.” [00:25:59] “It’s sort of like a double-edged sword because you know with the Open Source licenses as they are defined now, they allow Amazon and Microsoft to do this.” Links Nathan Schneider (https://nathanschneider.info/) CommunityRule (https://communityrule.info/) Social.coop (https://social.coop/about) Media Enterprise Design Lab (https://www.colorado.edu/lab/medlab/) Democratic Mediums (https://democraticmediums.info/) Xkcd-A Webcomic of Romance, Sarcasm, Math, and Language (https://xkcd.com/927/) The Tyranny of Openness: What Happened to Peer Production? Hosted by Enigma's Head of Growth Tor Bair, our ninth episode features Nathan Schneider. Nathan is a journalist and author as well as a professor of media studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He’s written some really interesting books, including one about the Occupy movement and another about God, so he has some experience tackling fairly complex topics. His latest book is called “Everything for Everyone: The Radical Tradition that is Shaping the Next Economy,” and it focuses on the role of cooperatives in our society - and in our future. As a result, Nathan has some very interesting and relevant ideas about “decentralization” as a movement and as a term, and he recently wrote a piece titled “What to do once you admit that decentralizing everything never seems to work.” On this episode Nathan and Tor discuss platform cooperativism, trust and accountability, the value of privacy, the difference between protocols and platforms, and how we should be defining this weird term “decentralization” - and whether it is a goal in itself or a means to another end. Enigma's new podcast "Decentralize This!" features guests from all over the decentralization space: developers, investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, writers, artists, people in government and enterprise - all individuals who care deeply about building a more decentralized and sustainable world. How can all these people with different perspectives collaborate to create and scale the technologies we need to shape a better future? ---- Relevant links: Nathan’s Website: https://nathanschneider.info Everything for Everyone: https://nathanschneider.info/books/everything-for-everyone/ Hackernoon Article: https://hackernoon.com/decentralizing-everything-never-seems-to-work-2bb0461bd168 Enigma: www.enigma.co Enigma Blog: blog.enigma.co Enigma Twitter: www.twitter.com/enigmampc

In this Upstream Conversation we spoke with scholar and activist Trebor Scholz, who is an Associate Professor of Culture & Media at the New School for Liberal Arts & co-editor of the book, Ours to Hack and to Own: The Rise of Platform Cooperativism, a New Vision for the Future of Work and a Fairer Internet. Trebor has a very wide breadth of knowledge in the field of digital labor, and is able to articulate a very strong critique of the modern day digital landscape. He walks us through how the internet has hit rock bottom, exemplified as it is these days by extreme power concentration, high levels of worker exploitation, and a lack of privacy. But Trebor is also able to draw a very compelling picture of how things could be different. What would #Uber look like if it had cooperative values? What if residents owned #Airbnb? And what role might a universal basic income play in the near future? Darkness and uncertainty loom ahead. Trebor's insights are a flash of light that illuminate and begin to guide us through these tumultuous times. Nathan Schneider is a scholar-in- residence of media studies, at the University of Colorado, in Boulder. Nathan highlights business owned by workers such as Green Taxi in Boulder, and explains how Platform Cooperativism, meaning multiple owners of a given business who elect / choose managers, is leading to the creation of more democratic, successful businesses. Nathan also talks about how these firms are financed, how compensation to employees is structured, and how these firms succeed more often than their traditional, pyramid-structured legacy counterparts.
