It's Romania's turn at the polls on Sunday, and a far-right candidate has made a surprise lead in the first round of voting. Călin Georgescu is a little-known, independent, anti-NATO, pro-Russia candidate, who is in a presidential run-off against centrist leader Elena Lasconi. The social media platform TikTok is credited with helping Georgescu to make those unexpected gains -becoming an effective way for the right to spread its message, and sway voter opinion. But Romania's authorities have suggested "a state-sponsored actor" has made a major attempt to interfere in the elections using TikTok, and with a series of cyber attacks. Georgescu's been accused of undeclared campaign spending and not labelling political advertising. Matt Barbet hosts today's Sky News Daily, joined by our Europe correspondent Adam Parsons in Romania, who's been speaking to Călin Georgescu. Plus, Anda Solea a lecturer in cyber crime at the University of Portsmouth, discusses how Georgescu used TikTok to rise to the top in the Romanian election. You can watch Adam's full interview with the Romanian presidential candidate here.Producer: Soila Apparicio Editor: Philly Beaumont
A far-right, pro-Russian candidate has won a surprise victory in the first round of Romania's presidential election. Calin Georgescu has an unassailable lead with more than ninety-nine percent of the votes counted. Mr Georgescu has expressed views that are sympathetic to Russia, is a critic of both NATO and the European Union, and campaigned heavily on social media during the election particularly on TikTok.Also in the programme: a BBC investigation has exposed a fertility scam fuelling a black market trade in babies in Nigeria; and we ask whether it's acceptable for people to sing-along to a film in the cinema, as the highly promoted musical Wicked is released.(Picture: Presidential candidate Calin Georgescu attends a televised debate in Bucharest, Romania on November 13, 2024. The Value of Consistency and Self-Investment Meg starts by emphasizing the importance of consistency in building a high-performing team. To achieve this, business owners need to invest time in learning and growing themselves. Consistency, combined with self-investment, leads to the development of valuable managerial skills. Business leaders should focus on continually improving their skills, aligning their values with their team, and driving the company's mission forward. The Role of Managers and Team Leaders Meg highlights the critical role of managers and team leaders in nurturing talent. They should be willing to be vulnerable and acknowledge that their team members may possess more knowledge in certain areas. To effectively manage and lead, it's crucial to value your managerial skills and provide your team with the opportunity to develop and grow. The Importance of High-Performing Teams We discuss what a high-performing team looks like. It's not just about meeting targets or solving technical issues. High-performing teams engage in conversations about client opportunities, innovation, and continuous improvement. They value open communication and encourage team members to share their thoughts and ideas for improvement. Getting the Onboarding Process Right Meg shares insights into the onboarding process, which goes beyond simply orientating new hires to your business. It's about helping them become high-performing team members who understand your culture, values, and objectives. Setting clear 30-60-90 day plans, defining what success looks like in the role, and consistently monitoring progress are key elements of effective onboarding. Individual Contributor Skills For individual contributors who are not managing teams, Meg outlines three critical skills: proficiency, teamwork, and daily discipline. These skills include technical expertise, alignment with company values, and maintaining strong daily routines. The role of a manager is to support individual contributors in developing and honing these capabilities. The Shadow of the Leader Leaders must look in the mirror and assess their own behaviour and actions. Their conduct sets the tone for the entire team. Effective leadership involves being open, involving the team, and being willing to admit when improvements are needed. Your team can provide valuable insights into areas where your business can become better. Simplifying the Process Meg's advice is to keep it simple. Start by investing time and effort into the hiring process and consistently monitor and support your new hires. Don't overcomplicate things. Consistency and self-investment will lead to significant improvements over time. Hiring the right candidate is only the first step towards building a successful team. To truly thrive, businesses must invest in their leadership skills, value their managerial abilities, and foster high-performing teams that are aligned with their culture and mission. A simple yet consistent approach, combined with continuous self-improvement, will lead to a radical transformation in your business. Jennifer shares how companies can find the ideal candidate for a position. First, managers should look beyond the resume. Does the candidate have transferable skills or experiences? Can you start an internship program to help you find the ideal candidate? For job seekers, Jennifer discusses the importance of networking within the organization you want to work for. It will help you bypass the over-saturated online system of job seeking. Once you figure out your ideal candidate, go where they like to hang out. For example, Are there specific online communities where you can find talent? Advice on Employee Engagement To help deepen engagement with new talent, Jennifer discusses the importance of optimizing your onboarding process. Have someone mentor new hires for the first 60 to 90 days. Provide feedback that encourages celebrations and mistakes during the onboarding process. You don't want to just point out the bad, but you want to point out the wins too. Develop a learning program to allow employees to gain new skills. The world is changing, and you want your employees to stay up-to-date on new tec "The first thing I think about with that question is just knowing what you want. So really defining what you want in the role that you're looking for is first and foremost." - Jennifer Smith. There are new design softwares rolling out all the time. But, the eagerness to learn, the excitement and passion is really what makes most amazing team members. Hiring is hard, finding great team members is as hard; As an agency owner, you know, your team members are a huge part of what you do. Everything that you say yes to, you're saying no to something else. Having the power to say ‘NO' to your sales lead, having that strength to say, “No, I don't think we are the right fit” is a huge thing. It can help you win bigger deals, but not everyone thinks like that. - Varun With the pricing of the contract versus the hourly component of it, the best way to manage that is to know how long a project takes with some of the standards. And then the upcharge is the nice way to say that for when they want to add on things. Set realistic goals for yourself because your team learns from you as a leader. IBonus episode of The Talent Intelligence Podcast. My name is Robert Gillespie and in today's episode I'm talking candidate engagement with Danny Biello, our Delivery Operations Leader here at Solutions Driven. A key skill for any recruiter or hiring manager to master is how they engage a candidate throughout the hiring process…and Danny is a master at this! There's so many factors that go into a company's final decision on whether they've found the dream candidate or not. But not every company has a documented process in place to identify if the candidate sees your company as the perfect match as well. And that lack of process can cost you a lot of wasted time, money and effort during the hiring process if you get it wrong! So in this episode Danny shares our approach to finding that perfect candidate/client match so you can steal or model some of the best bits. It's an approach we call the 6F's. And we credit this approach for why we've been able to achieve a “97% Right Hire, First Time” success rate over the last 3 years. So what are the 6F's? Listen on to find out.
The New Zealand Public Party was formed by Billy Te Kahika in response to the blatant injustice and tyranny being hurled upon the New Zealand people by the Labour/NZ First/Green government. Reclaim New Zealand for ALL the People – is the main goal and message. However, this message is also more significant than any one political party alone. To that end, we have established an Advisory Board to include all political interests. Billy has engaged in talks with all the minor parties to get to learn more about them and their policies in hopes that we will come together under one banner and one voice. The fragmenting of the vote across many smaller parties does not help New Zealand. Unity in change is a good thing. It is time. We will post updates to this as the agreements happen. Stay tuned! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/new-zealand-public-party/message
In today's episode, I discuss common mistakes I have seen organizations make in pinpointing the right person for the role they're recruiting for. Many organizations have faced the scenario of having a hiring need, only to find they're meeting with candidates who are not in fact the best skill set or organizational fit. Why does this happen and what can be done to reduce this from occurring? I discuss 4 factors which may be contributing to this in recruitment cycles.
