Welcome to a captivating episode of the Literary License Podcast's Book to Screen series, where we delve into the enchanting world of Roald Dahl's children's classic, "The Witches". Join us as we embark on a thrilling journey through the book's spine-chilling realm where child-hating witches and humans coexist. This episode offers a comprehensive exploration of the book's plot, critical reception, and notable adaptations, unveiling the unique blend of humour, fright, and moral lessons that mark Dahl's storytelling.   Joined by passionate reader Leandro Ghezzi, we discuss Dahl's distinctive portrayal of witches and draw parallels between the characters and real-world figures. We also tackle the controversy around the modifications in Dahl's books by Puffin Books aimed at appealing to modern audiences and delve into the changes made in "The Witches". The conversation extends to a comparison with the original Grimm fairy tales, and the impact of their dark and ambiguous endings.   Engage in our riveting discussion around Dahl's creativity, the debate over censoring his books, and the enduring charm of his dark tales that have influenced generations. We explore the enduring appeal of classics from authors like Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl, debate the perspective of viewing old works through a modern lens, and express concern over attempts to modify books in the name of political correctness.   We also provide an in-depth review of the 1990 film adaptation of "The Witches" starring Anjelica Huston and discuss on how Dahl's narratives have been translated on screen. The debate explores the age-old question – do children's literature and film adaptations really need happy endings? Ride along on this literary exploration as we delve deeper into the magical world created by the prodigious author, Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl has recently become a hot topic of debate regarding censorship, sensitivity, and posthumous changes to art. At the start of 2023, Puffin Books decided to make hundreds of revisions to Dahl's large collection of works due to feedback from sensitivity readers. Many of these revisions change or erase any text which discusses weight, race, gender, and violence. These changes have many people, including ourselves, asking, “What do we think about this?” In this episode, we discuss our opinions on these revisions, the implications of censorship, and if an author can be separated from his works.

Back on the mics again at last with our second Mixed Bag show of February 2023, to finish off the shortest month of the year. In the first half, Kerry shares more about her recently revealed consulting website, Kay Consulting, which ties in to the recent announcement, by Puffin Books in the UK, regarding updates made to the language in many of Roald Dahl's children's stories, in order to make them more inclusive for these times. So we discuss the authenticity consulting services on Kerry's KC and how the work relates with the questions some have with changing a book's language vs doing better in the current moment when writing new stories and how authors like Dahl was then and the responsibility of writers now. How does Kerry handle these matters on her new site? Also, she's working on the earliest concept and draft of a book idea all about living with a prosthetic eye since age twelve. During some reading lately for a feminist horror literature and creative writing class, one of the books on the syllabus was Beloved by Toni Morrison. During Black History Month, she began doing research on the ways in which people have lost eyes, specifically when black people have lost eyes or their vision (both eyes or one or the other) do to systemic violence through the years. This includes civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and a decorated World War II veteran in the 1940s. And in the second half of the show, Brian shares details of his latest local London music scene night out, along with some audio from a 2017 trip to Iceland with an old friend, in order to illustrate the point of an article Kerry came across. It's an article by writer Jennifer Stavros about the benefits of recording sound, instead of the more common act of taking photos when traveling. They talk over the existing impact Covid has had, when lockdowns were keeping us all at home and how we (as blind people and sighted alike) can come to experience the joys of life once more and learn to step back out into the world again (shaking hands again), all things opening wider as the virus slips more and more into the background of our lives with every passing day, week, and month. How to foster greater inclusion and how far to go, going beyond the “culture wars” as war of any kind becomes destructive, and wrapping up this Mixed Bag discussion with the merits of “echoic memory” which you can find more on in this BBC article, “Why We Should Record Travel Moments” referenced in our second half: https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20230209-why-we-should-record-travel-moments

57: Watership Down and the Classics Written by Andrew Stevens Full references: Richard Adam's biographical note in the Puffin edition of Watership Down describes him as having “more than a passing acquaintance with the giants of English literature”(1)… ...The three great epics...Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid do seem to feature throughout the novel, as does the wider Greek Epic cycle...There are...scholarly works on structural similarities and narrative technique between the poems and the novel, Chapter 2 of Dr Hannah Parry's 2016 thesis “The Aeneid with Rabbits: Children's Fantasy as Modern Epic”(2) is one fine example.... Chapter 1 opens with a quote from Aeschylus' Agamemnon, the story of the Greek king's...homecoming after the sack of Troy...the destruction of a former home also matches how Aeneas tells his story to Queen Dido in Virgil's Aeneid (3). ...the available evidence strongly suggests that the English translation of the Agamemnon excerpt is Adams' own (4). ...The Warren of the Snares has been likened to the Lotus Eaters from the Odyssey (5) ...The Anabasis has been described by Michael Flower as the “master-plot” of the escape story in Western literature (6)... ...A parallel exists between the Anabasis and Watership Down... army vanguard reaches the summit of Mount Theces...They cry out “Thalatta! Thalatta!” “The Sea! The Sea”... (7), an event alone that has inspired entire scholarly works on its cultural significance (8). When Dandelion...cries out “You can see the whole world” (9), this is their Thalatta moment. Classical culture and history combine in the character of Bigwig...Before the battle, some sources state that the Persians invited the Greeks to lay down their arms and have their lives spared. They are said to have replied simply “Molon labe – come and get them” (10)...when Bigwig invites his Russian Warship of an opponent to “silflay hraka, u embleer rah”(11), his humour is crude, perfect and feels very Spartan. It is easy to draw a comparison of Hazel...and Bigwig...to Odysseus and Ajax in the Little Iliad...Bigwig's contempt for the idea of Hazel being superior to him in Chapter 11 (12), shows his view at this point that a strong rabbit could never answer to a weaker one. At the novels' climax, we learn in his explosive, revelatory statement of “My Chief Rabbit has told me to defend this run …”(13) that, unlike Ajax, Bigwig has accepted his and his rah's positions... A final note on Classics in Watership Down is the title of Chapter 48 (14). Dea ex Machina means “Goddess out of the Machine”... 1 WD p.479 2 Parry, pp.33-53 3 Parry, p.39 4 Bridgman, pp.161-2 5 Parry, pp.40-2 6 Flower, p.47 7 Anab. 4.7.11 8 Rood, 2004 9 WD, p.134 10 Cartledge, p.142 11 WD p.451 12 WD, p.68 13 WD p.454 14 WD, p.458 Primary sources Adams, Richard (1972) Watership Down, Puffin Books, Harmondsworth Xenophon Anabasis in Waterfield, R. Tuppence Middleton chooses Stig of the Dump by Clive King published by Puffin Books 1963More about this book:Stig Of The Dump was rejected by a great many publishers until it was picked up by the legendary children's editor Kay Webb, of Puffin Books who said it was one of the books she was proudest of publishing. Since 1963 it has sold millions of copies. And it's the one that's probably closest to it's author Clive King (1924 – 2018) himself; long before recycling was fashionable he loved to pick up bits and pieces that other people had discarded and turn them into something else. As a child of the 1930s he would roam around the North Kent countryside playing, yes, in a chalk pit. Years later his own children did the same and there it was, the inspiration for the story of Barney and his friend Stig. Never out of print, for generations of children the magical chalk pit lives on in their imagination – in real life, it is now covered by a golf course. What don’t legendary editor Elizabeth Law and I chat about in this far-ranging conversation that only begins to scratch at the surface of her vast publishing knowledge? We discuss her interactions with literary agents, working with Stephen King, her “cameo” in GERALD’S GAME, her work for Roald Dahl, the origin story of previous guest, Dan Gutman, lessons learned from Robert McKee, and a kiss with Hamilton’s Jonathan Groff. Elizabeth Law shares incredible insights on writing dialogue, description, characterization, theme, and an overview of so much of what’s she’s learned during her distinguished career. Hear her blow my mind by telling me word count isn’t nearly as important as I think it is, and then she shares the secret of what every publisher is looking for. Elizabeth Law is a children’s and young adult publisher and editor with over three decades of experience. In her own words: "I worked at Viking Penguin, and at Penguin’s divisions Puffin Books and Frederick Warne and Co, for 18 years, leaving to become Associate Publisher of Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. And in 2007 I left there and became the first publisher of Egmont USA. At Egmont I got to help create a company from the ground up, which taught me, among other things, to think creatively about ways to get attention for books when you’re competing against other books' huge marketing budgets. From 2013-2017 I worked as a consultant, with writers and artists and people who just love children’s books as much as I do. I’ve kept that work up as I took a role at Holiday House Books for Young Readers as their backlist and special projects editor. I continue to acquire and work on terrific books, including the recent debut title Itch by Polly Farquhar, which has received starred reviews from Kirkus and Booklist."

It's a return to our series 3 retrospective with a look at The Shakespeare Code.  However, this week there is a change in the presenting line up as Phil is joined by the excellent Martyn Havell from the Bad Wilf Podcast who makes a long overdue return to the show.  So how does this historical story hold up after all this time?  Is it more Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet or more Jet Li's Romeo Must Die?  Find out what they think and as a bonus you will also discover that Chevy Chase is God and Haircut 100 rule!! And in a very slow news week, 50th Anniversary rumours are dashed, an announcement of Puffin Books contribution to the Doctor's 50th and more stats!
