I recently had a great chat here on the Kathy Sullivan Explores podcast with Alastair Humphreys, an adventurer, blogger, author, speaker, and filmmaker. Alastair is a prolific communicator who—through his website, speaking, and range of books and blogs—passionately advocates for getting more adventures into our lives. His book, Ten Lessons from the Road, brims with inspirational advice for life, hard-won during his four-year, round-the-world journey by bike. In this episode, I share two key takeaways from reading Ten Lessons from the Road. I also discuss how novels can teach us lessons about life, elaborate on Alastair's “Doorstep Mile” concept, and describe the mindset that helped me navigate some of the most challenging moments of my life. “Don't fear regret or embarrassment; instead, fear not giving your all to something worthwhile.” - Kathy Sullivan This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: ●     Lessons from Ten Lessons from the Road●     How novels can teach us about life through their characters●     The “Doorstep Mile” and how to overcome daunting challenges Resources Mentioned: ●     Book: Ten Lessons from the Road by Alastair Humphreys Our Favorite Quotes: ●     “It's easy to be daunted by the enormity of the challenge: climbing that mountain, writing that novel, or asking somebody out for a date can just seem huge.” - Kathy Sullivan●     “Alastair Humphreys' Ten Lessons from the Road is for everyone, not just adventurers, and all sorts of experiences teach you these. In our final video of this series Claire Murphy, guitar tech, tour manager, and former musician, leaves us with some great tips for living on & off the road as a touring professional. Based on Claire's book, Girl on the Road: How to Break into Touring from a Female Perspective, Claire lays out a strategy for becoming freelance and leaving your regular job, with real world recommendations of who to contact and resources to use. Her book won't tell you how to become a sound engineer or how to re-string a guitar, but it will tell you how to get that first job on tour where you can put your skills to use or simply learn on the job. While this book isn't intended just for girls, it does address some female specific issues. But it can certainly be applied to ANYONE looking to break into the world of touring. Claire Murphy has worked for bands such as Vance Joy, Elle King, Lord Huron, Babes in Toyland, The Raveonettes, ABC, Go West, Tony Hadley, Therapy? and many many others, playing in venues from bars to arenas, and 80,000 capacity stadiums. She has toured in splitter vans around Europe, flown in for shows in Russia, South America, Australia and Japan, and toured in buses around the USA and Canada. She mentors women trying to break into the live music industry via the organization SoundGirls.org and often welcomes them to come shadow her for a day on tour. iTunes         Spotify         Youtube     Patreon   “I'm not just a Bass Player, I'm a Sound System” As bassist for the legendary rap label Sugarhill Records backing Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five to the pioneering Living Colour, Doug Wimbish has lent his innovative and creative bass grooves and sounds to a roster of world-renowned musicians. Considered a pioneer in Hip-Hop bass playing and in the use of bass effects, alternate tunings and extended hand techniques, Doug's mastery of the bass is unparalled. As one of the most versatile session and touring bassists in the industry, Doug moves readily from pop and mainstream rock to hip-hop, funk, metal, symphonic metal, reggae, R&B, electronic, world and experimental music. Doug Wimbish is probably best known as the cutting edge lead bassist in the Grammy Award-winning hard rock band Living Colour, but looking beyond the obvious, one quickly sees that Doug's influence and impact on the world's musical culture is much more vast and significant than often written or realized.  Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's “The Message”, listed by Rollingstone.com as the #1 Greatest Hip Hop Song of all time, featured Doug's bass lines as do many other Sugarhill Records classics including “Apache”, “8th Wonder” and “White Lines”. Wimbish wrote the bass line on The Sequence's “Funk You Up”. To get an idea of the respect Doug has earned within the music industry, consider that in one week in 1991, Doug received personal phone calls from Living Colour, Bruce Springsteen and Seal, all asking him to work with them. Doug made the decision to work with Living Colour and joined the band, becoming its permanent bassist. He actively records and tours today with his band mates Vernon Reid, Corey Glover and Will Calhoun. The group's latest album, “Shade”, was released in September of 2017. In addition to his work with Living Colour, Doug's highly regarded career spanning all musical genres has also included recording, producing and touring with many world renowned artists including The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Herb Albert, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Carly Simon, Seal, Al Green, Billy Idol, George Clinton, Depeche Mode, Talib Kweli, Kanye West, James Brown, Mos Def, Tarja Turunen, Ronnie Wood, Freddie Jackson, Michael Bolton, Schiller, Cheb Khaled, Hari Haran and Peter Wolf, to name a few. From his early days as one of Hip-Hop's earliest architects in the Original Sugarhill Records Rhythm Section, to his long-time membership in Living Colour, TackHead, Little Axe, Jungle Funk, HeadFake, and then on to more recent collaborations including DMD the Vibes with Daru Jones & Marcus Machado, Doug continues to prove himself as one of the world's finest, versatile and most sought after bass guitarists.   Special Mentions: Doug Wimbish Official Site, Hell on Wheels: A Tour Stories Compilation, Becky Pell - Yoga Journey: A Contemporary Guide to a Timeless Tradition, Claire Murphy - Girl on the Road: How to Break into Touring from a Female Perspective, Steve Walsh Gofund Me, Roadie Free Radio Merch, RFR Podcast Bundle, Follow Your Drishti Yoga Podcast, roadiecare.com, musicares.org, Roswell Pro Audio Mini K87, Soundgirls.org

Three Crown Studio is a full service music production studio that specializes in helping artists create and record their music and develop their careers. Erik grew up in the Midwest in a musically-inclined family. His mother was a singer in Stockholm, his father a Saxophone player and mechanical engineer, and one of his sisters is now a music teacher. From a young age, Erik was interested in music, jazz, engineering, and mechanics. Like his father, he also took up the saxophone and played in a variety of Jazz, Rock, Reggae, and Jam bands throughout his high school and college years. After winning the Cleveland High School Rock-Off, his band had the opportunity to record an album at Metro Sync Studios in Cleveland. As this was the first time he had stepped into a recording studio, it was an incredibly defining moment that offered perspective into an alternate way of making music, and he found it fascinating. In 2006 he attended Ohio University for Music Production. He had the honor to study under Eddie Ashworth, a reputable west coast audio engineer that worked on albums for bands like Sublime and Pennywise. During his time at college, he ran a studio out of his home and began recording local and touring bands. After graduating in 2010 with a BA in Media Arts & Sciences, he married his high-school sweetheart, and moved to New York City. He started working at Guitar Center just to pay the rent, but it evolved into a temporary career as he quickly worked his way up the ranks from sales clerk to General Manager of the Brooklyn GC store, one of the largest in the country. Over time he had the opportunity to meet and work with thousands of musicians, engineers, and industry professionals, creating a unique network of like-minded people. In 2017, he left GC to pursue his passion, and founded Three Crown Studio out of his Brooklyn apartment. However, he quickly began to develop a foundation of clientele, and in early 2019 was able to open a brick & mortar studio in Downtown Brooklyn. He also worked in A&R for both Palm Pictures and Geffen Records and was thrilled to executive-produce albums by Cyndi Lauper, Public Image Ltd, White Zombie, and Nina Simone. Alago grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a large, spirited, and devoted Puerto Rican family. Through his early passion for music, art, theater, and photography, he soon found himself rubbing elbows with many downtown NYC scene makers, from Stiv Bators to Jean Michel Basquiat, Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County to Deborah Harry and Robert Mapplethorpe. As an underage teenager going to Max's Kansas City, CBGB, and various art galleries, Alago also began running The Dead Boys fan club. A few years later, he became the assistant music director for legendary nightclubs the Ritz and the Red Parrot. In the late 1980s, he was diagnosed with HIV, which manifested into full-blown AIDS ten years later. He survived to continue his music career, but in 2005, he left music to pursue his other love: photography. Alago went on to publish three bestselling books: Rough Gods, Brutal Truth, and Beautiful Imperfections with German-based publisher Bruno Gmünder. He has since overcome his longtime addiction to drugs and alcohol. In his clean and sober life, he has reconnected with his family, continues to be a working photographer as well as record producer, and only through the grace of his 12-Step program is he able to live this big, beautiful life. In 2017, a documentary directed by Drew Stone and produced by Michael Alex on Alago's wildly successful career in music was released in theaters and on Netflix, entitled Who the Fuck Is That Guy? Tools and Techniques for Blogging While Travelling Today I tackle a question from a listener about blogging on the road. Carmen Fellows asked about technicalities such as how to get content online and ways to access your blog. How can you balance blogging while traveling for work or vacation? It depends on the situation, and sometimes it's a juggling act.   While you're away, here are seven approaches to try when it comes to blogging: Take a complete break, and give your readers a break too Work harder, and schedule as much as you can before you go Highlight previous content, or feature a “Best of” series Schedule one of more guest bloggers Blog on the road Use posts that are easy to create (polls, embeddable content, link posts, etc.) Do a combination of the above If you plan on blogging on the road, think about where you can find internet access, and whether you want to bring your computer equipment or leave it behind. There are pros and cons to bringing and using devices such as a smartphone, iPad and laptop. How much do you really need to do with your blog? Working while you're away can have an impact on what you're there to do, whether it’s to have fun with your family or speak at a conference. Allow yourself to be present. It's okay (and important) to have time off from your blog. The listener was Carmen Fellows, thanks for asking the question, Carmen. It’s all about blogging while you’re on the road. I wanna talk to you about how I approach blogging whilst I’m away, whether it’d be for vacation or for work. Carmen particularly wanted me to talk about the technicalities of doing it, how do you actually get your content up online, whether you do it on mobile or iPad or some other way. Also, I wanna talk a little bit about balancing blogging with whatever else you’re doing in your travels, whether that’d be vacation with family and friends or work. You can find today’s show notes at problogger.com/podcast/243. As I said, today’s show was inspired by Carmen Fellows who wrote in with this question via our Facebook group. She says, “Hi Darren, if you haven’t addressed this already, can you review different ways to access your blog while travelling to keep it up? For example, if I can’t get on my computer, do you find that updating via your mobile is suggested or is there a better way?
