ROADS LESS TRAVELED: DISCOVERING LOCAL HISTORY WITH NORTH FORK SCAVENGER HUNTS by Northforker Presents On
Alastair is an author, Narrator, Adventurist, and Double Lung Transplant recipient. Alastair immigrated to Canada from England by himself when he was 19. He became a typical yuppie – family, a house in the suburbs, and a big job in the corporate sector. Following London Life's Freedom 55 plan – he retired at 57 and went to live in the country. Disillusioned with retirement's passivity, he shed his material possessions and lived for two years with a small First Nations band in a remote fly-in location in the Northwest Territories. Cultural differences and a challenging environment ignited in him fresh perspectives, and inspired a new way of being, and fueled his soul searching. The experience changed the direction of his life, which he wrote about in his memoir Awakening in the Northwest Territories. He left the north two years later and, motivated to help others, went to Bangladesh on a two-year assignment as an International Development volunteer. With his new partner, Candas Whitlock, they next went to Jamaica and Guyana as International Development volunteers on one-year assignments. They co-wrote Go For It: Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Traveled. Two years later, between volunteering assignments, they spent four months backpacking Central America and Southeast Asia and co-wrote Budget Backpacking for Boomers. They were part of a Reconciliation Canada project. In 2016, they went to Alert Bay, B.C., on a four-month volunteer placement with the Namgis First Nations. This was part of a Reconciliation Canada project. The experience was so profound that they felt compelled to write about it in a memoir entitled Tides of Change. Candas and Alastair became entertainers for the next three years, presenting their audio/visual shows based on their books to audiences in retirement residences, service clubs, libraries, and community centers throughout Ontario. Alastair's double lung transplant in 2020 enabled him to finish writing his novel The Soldier and the Orphan and narrate it as an audiobook. While narrating his other books (his three memoirs), he learned that there is a demand for his type of voice–senior male with a British accent – as a narrator and voice-over artist. Alastair has three children and seven grandchildren and lives in London, Ontario. Canada. "Solo Journeys in India: Navigating the Transport Tapestry via tuk-tuks, trains and planes….” Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest's 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide for women like you who need extra support traveling the world (slowly), one woman at a time. Please rate this podcast and the Amazon book series, especially Part B on Destinations! I've been traveling solo since 1972 and writing about it since 1993. Now you can experience the Top Selling Book Series: 5 Steps to Solo Travel, a Woman's Guide to Travel and Destinations in Her Prime, found on Amazon. I recently took a 90-day trip around the world, and this is a special episode on Indian transportation for the solo female. What are the challenges faced by solo female travelers in India? How can they navigate the transportation system in India? What are the travel tips for exploring India's transport networks as a solo female traveler? This particular podcast edition is about the "Roads Less Traveled, including a few Solo Female Travel Tips for Exploring India's Transport Networks" There was a massive train crash while I was in India, and many people were tragically killed. The people I was staying with had friends on those trains, but they were ok. Many of my family members contacted me across the miles to see if I was ok, as it was world news. See the show notes for more on train accidents. https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india/yearender-2023-tragic-accidents-in-2023-road-rail-accidents-odisha-coromandel-express-andhra-pradesh-train-collision-tragedy-latest-updates-2023-12-22-908419 The world's largest populated country has transportation challenges. Corruption, bureaucracy, and red tape are also issues. Corrupted officials leverage their control over permits to line their pockets. Income equality is massive. The wealthiest 10% makes up almost 60% of India's income. The future looks brighter. One airline, Go First, went out of business after I bought my ticket in May 2023. I cannot get a refund because the airline is bankrupt and, therefore, will not honor any purchases of their flights, nor will the ticket agency through which I bought it. https://www.hindustantimes.com/business/go-first-gets-two-financial-bids-as-part-of-its-bankruptcy-process-101708754354934.html I arrived in Chennai from a flight originating in Cambodia and transferred through Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent 8 hours in the airport, talking to people from all over the world. Here is a rundown of the travel I did over two weeks in six cities in India. When going through airport security, you must be on an all-female line. Men and women are not allowed to go through together. The same thing happened when I went to the Taj Majal. Separate security stations were established, and I even hit my head on that going through, as I am 5' 10', so I am taller than most other women. Overall, I made many transportation mistakes, but they were all to help you make a better trip next time. My travel mistakes in India: I was lied to by a taxi driver, had a driver with no shoes and no change, got scammed in the main Delhi train station, and had trouble finding a bus to Agra. The Cru wake up far earlier than usual to record with Tee Zee, an author and podcaster from Australia. We chat about how and why certain themes work their way into our writing as well as the joys of flash fiction as a form of storytelling. Stories include dreams that are more than they seem; Satan, transmigrated into a turkey; the chains of daily life (and the freedom that becomes those chains); and a girl searching for her lost friend. You can listen to Tee Zee's podcast, Flash Fiction in Five, here. His blog, Roads Less Traveled, will include this week's story in print form. From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Transmigration of souls. An ancient belief concerning the transition of the soul after death to another body or substance, usually human or animal, also known as metempsychosis. BRAHMANS and Buddhists accept human descent into plants as well as animals, and the BUDDHA underwent 550 births in different forms. The ancient Egyptians held to a form of transmigration in which the soul could inhabit another form to allow temporary revisiting the earth. See also PYTHAGORAS. Stories begin around the 16:15 mark. When was the last time curiosity got the better of you on a business trip? In this rare solo episode, Jason explores roads less traveled. Literally. The world has reopened. Airports are busier than ever. Calling on clients is what business travel is all about, but is there room in your schedule for unexpected experiences? It doesn't take much (if any) planning to get off the beaten path for a few hours, as Jason discovered on a recent trip to Salt Lake City. When a wonky gap in the schedule left him with some time to kill, he had two choices: head to his hotel room or let a Google Map suggestion lead him in a completely serendipitous direction. The following day, when Jason mentioned the excursion to his client, she shared with him a website (and podcast) that lists many such hidden gems: Atlas Obscura. For those unfamiliar with Atlas Obscura, think of it as a virtual concierge with suggestions for weird and wonderful experiences worldwide. There's probably a business metaphor connected to Jason's pedal-to-the-metal experience out on the Flats. Instead, he's content to keep the lesson literal for now. “You know, this little Google Map suggestion totally opened my eyes, and it reminded me that there are some really cool things in the world.” Make time for wonder on your next business trip. The show starts with a listener recommended snack, bread in a can! To accompany the moist, tubular bread, homemade, deep, dark, rich and hot chocolate. Then, Mark and Jana remind you to consider taking the road less traveled during your holiday excursions. You never know what you might find, see, learn about. They tell of the mining towns they encountered, and the cool history found at their fingertips (easy phone/internet searches) on a recent drive home from a holiday gathering.

From its hipsters to its history, Oregon really is a one of a kind state. People from all over the United States are moving to this northwestern gem, for the economy, or all the sights it has to offer. Whether it's pristine lakes, or dry deserts Oregon is a nature's wonderland. Undoubtedly, it's easy to get lost in its beauty. But turns out, recently it has come to light that people have physically been getting lost as well. Walking out towards a shaded hiking trail into the abyss- never to be seen alive again. Chris, lost his life in 2012, and no-one saw one thing and it turns out the mountains are loyal at keeping secrets. This episode is a play by play into the investigation around cold weather & cold blooded murder. The next episode will reveal the truth.

Vi's Honours project analyses data from the Artificial Gravity Bed Rest study at the European Space Agency, with a focus on the gluteal muscles. In essence, Vi studies what might happen to butts in Space, which makes this episode, recorded over Zoom, a literal Booty Call. In today's world we witness incredible anger, pain, divisiveness, racism, illness, and discrimination. So many people feel stressed, helpless, lost, resentful, hopeless, guilty, and overwhelmed. How did all this negativity become the norm in our country? What can we do to change this? It seems like every possible answer is way off into the future. But what if we didn’t have to wait for circumstances to shift to begin our healing? What if the catalyst for positive change lies within our own daily experiences? What if we could leave a legacy of hope, positivity, and inspiration for our children and generations to come? Sound too good to be true? Actually, it's amazing what a little action can do. It starts with the gift of JOY. In today's remarkable episode I interview Yasmin Nguyen on not only his Impossible story (which is a doozy mind you) but also about how he is showing up in the world, and what his fresh perspective on Joy inspired him to create. Portland local Yasmin Nguyen believes having a joyful life is possible, no matter what else may be happening around us. In fact, not only is it possible, but he is backing it up with some serious action. For the next 18-months he is packing it up and moving on out, driving across America talking to people. People like you and me as he documents, shares stories, inspiration, and experiences that activate possibilities and make positive impact in our lives. He created the Joyful Living Project to ignite positive change and help rebuild thriving relationships, businesses, and communities. Why? He is determined to remind people that in every moment we have a choice on what we focus on -- the negative or joy. From this seed of joy grows hope, possibility, generosity, kindness, love, re-connection with ourselves and others. During this journey Yasmin will explore 3 main questions: What does joy look like in our lives? How can it positively impact our relationships, businesses, and communites? What’s holding us back from having more joy? And how do we turn that around? Through interviews, local experiences, community events, kindness experiments, and speaking engagements with businesses, he will shine the spotlight on all the positive experiences already around us and inspire shifts in the way we live, the way we connect, and the way we make a difference. The Joyful Living Project officially launched on July 1st featuring the joy in Portland, Oregon. Each month, the tour continues to another city. 2018 July – Portland August – Seattle September – San Francisco October – Los Angeles / San Diego November – Phoenix / Portland December – Houston / Dallas 2019 January – Austin February – New Orleans March – Atlanta April – Nashville / Charlotte May – Washington DC / Philadelphia June – New York City July – Boston August – Detroit / Cincinnati September — Chicago October – Minneapolis / Kansas City November – Denver December – Salt Lake City / Boise ***Follow Yasmin on IG @joyfullivingproject also, follow the journey and the plethora of beautiful content being created at www.joyfullivingproject.com "You take something with you. It's a sad fact that so many RVers travel so fast that they miss so much. That's because they travel the interstates, where the country whizzes past in a blur. In this episode of Roadtreing: The RV Lifestyle Podcast, we suggest a better way, through the backroads, the two lane state and county highways. In the interview segment towards the end of the program, Mike interviews RVers Jerry Pavlat [spp-timestamp time="58:32"], who reveals how he makes sure he spends as little time as possible on the Interstate. Then, in an off-the-beaten-path report [spp-timestamp time="51:30"], Tom and Patti Burkett take us to Western Oklahoma and an event far from the Interstate that is worth traveling to just to getthe T-Shirt. Plus your comments, questions and lots of tips.Scroll down for show note details and resources and click the player below to start listening. [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #92 June 15, 2016 of Roadtreking - The RV Lifestyle Podcast: JENNIFER'S TIP OF THE WEEK [spp-timestamp time="5:10"] This week's tip is a follow up to the suggestion I made last week about using Zip Lock bags to store all sorts of stuff, from food to spare parts to things like cereal which can be emptied out of those big bulky boxes and stored in much less space. A listener named Diane offers up an alternative suggestion. The system Diane suggested is called Thrifty Vac. It seals all kinds of foods in vacuum bags.. It is very inexpensive, less that $2 . The bags cost about 17-cents each. I'll put a link on the shownotes page for this episode at Roadtreking-dot-com-forward slash-92. If you have a tip you'd like to share with our RVing audience, use the “Send Voicemail” link on the right side of the Roadtreking.com blog. You can use the built-in microphone on your computer or smartphone to record the tip and send it directly to me. You can also reach me at Jennifer@roadtreking com The tip of the week is brought to you by Good Sam, the world's most popular RV organization, now celebrating its 50th year. LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: [spp-timestamp time="9:31"] ===Maribeth asks about hooking her RV up to the house current while its parked in her driveway. Mike recommends a 30 AMP system, especially if she wasn't to run her air conditioning. For the fridge and to charge the house batteries, the normal house system of 20 Amps will work but you will not be able to run the same amount of appliances inside the RV as you could if you were getting power from a 30A or, for the bigger RVs, a 50 A system ===Ann asks about the proper tire pressure in her RV. She checked the door post panels but found a suggestion on the Internet that recommended different settings. The recommended maximum inflation pressures for your tires are indicated on the certification label or in your owner's manual. Since RVs can be loaded with many different configurations, the load on each tire will vary. For this reason, actual air pressure required should be determined based on the load on each individual tire. Inflation pressure should be adjusted to handle the tire carrying the heaviest load, and all tires on the axle should be adjusted to this standard. Each manufacturer provides load and inflation tables specific to their products to help you determine the correct tire inflation pressure for your vehicle's loading. Under inflation brings a higher risk of susceptibility to damage due to road hazards, reduces casing durability, and causes a loss in fuel economy, plus uneven or irregular tire wear. Severe or prolonged underinflation brings about an increased risk of tread It's a common practice for RV owners to lower tire pressure in their search for a smoother ride. This is not only dangerous, it's relatively ineffective, as the difference in ride quality is not significant. When minimum inflation pressure requirements are not met,
