Roadside Picnic, first published in 1972, is the best-known work of Russia's most famous modern science fiction writers, Arkady & Boris Strugatsky, together the authors of 26 novels and scores of short stories. To discuss it we are joined by the writer and radio presenter Jennifer Lucy Allan, and the publisher and translator Ilona Chavasse. The book is based on the premise that Earth has been briefly visited by an alien civilisation that have left behind them six ‘Zones', places strewn with their debris, some of it lethal to humans; all of it fascinating and perplexing. The Zones feed a black market in artefacts supplied by ‘Stalkers' who are prepared to risk their lives and sanity by entering the forbidden areas to retrieve them. We consider why the book is still considered one of the greatest of all SF novels, how it came to be read as a dark foreshadowing of the Chernobyl disaster and why it has proved itself so ripe for adaptation, both as a series of video games and, most famously, as the basis for Andrei Tarkovsky's classic 1979 film, Stalker. This episode also finds Andy returning to a haunting novel he read earlier this year: The High House (Swift Press) by former guest Jessie Greengrass, while John is carried away by Everybody (Picador), Olivia Laing's magnificent book about freedom and the human body. “The Experiment is The Experiment.” We're joined by critic & filmmaker Martin Kessler to discuss the Strugatsky Brothers' magnum opus, The Doomed City. Long self-suppressed by the brothers due to fears of retribution by Soviet government under which it was written, the book has a potency and imagination that rivals their best work like Hard to Be a God (adapted into the legendary film by Alexei German) and Roadside Picnic (adapted by Andrei Tarkovsky into the all-time classic Stalker.) The story concerns a bizarre city operating unstuck from time under the incomprehensible parameters of an opaque social-metaphysical project known only as The Experiment. Theological novel, pointed political allegory, mind-bending sci-fi story; like the land of The Experiment itself, The Doomed City is an ever-changing landscape with mysteries apt to be interpreted wildly differently depending on who is doing the interpreting. We go deep on this challenging but wildly engaging masterpiece from some of the most important science-fiction writers ever to exist. Support our Patreon:

It’s been a while since I read anything other than my students and my own writing. When returning to the hobby, not many books came to mind. Luckily, the one I chose was exactly what I needed. A grim atmosphere made harsh and interesting with the inclusion of sinister scientific anomalies; the Strugatsky brothers did not disappoint. With that said, welcome to my disorganised and somewhat biased review on Roadside Picnic!

The consequence of living in a complex world: one tiny tweak can lead to massive transformation. Set the stage a slightly different way, and the entire play might unfold differently. This path-dependency shows up in both the science fiction premise and the hypothesis of scientific research: What can we learn about the hidden order of our cosmos by adjusting just a single variable?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I’m your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we’ll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week, Complexity Podcast becomes its own experiment after an invasion by our sister podcast, InterPlanetary Festival’s Alien Crash Site. SFI Miller Omega Program Manager Caitlin McShea joins as guest co-host for a conversation with SFI Program Postdoctoral Fellow Tamara van der Does (who models belief change using techniques inspired by statistical physics) for a three-headed conversation totally befitting the subject matter: a work of speculative “sci-fi science” produced by SFI’s postdoctoral researchers during a 72-hour lock-in complex systems charette. Their question: how might an extraterrestrial civilization much like our own work if their biology required three-parent families? We discuss the interplay between individual and society, the role of counterfactuals and speculation in both scientific research and sci-fi, and what technology she’d hope to find left in the wake of an alien visitation.Tune in two weeks from now for a return to our regularly scheduled programming...If you value our research and communication efforts, please consider making a donation at santafe.edu/give — and/or rating and reviewing us at Apple Podcasts. Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I’m your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we’ll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week we present something different: SFI’s InterPlanetary Project is excited to announce a new podcast, Alien Crash Site, in which we ask some of the most interesting people we know — scientists, artists, authors, and athletes — what strange technologies they might hope to find in a “Zone” like the alien visitation area from the Strugatsky brothers’ novel, Roadside Picnic (adapted to film as Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky). In this special teaser episode, we present clips from the first three episodes of Alien Crash Site, hosted by IPFest Director Caitlin McShea, with guests:David Krakauer, SFI President, evolutionary biologist, and William H. Miller Professor of Complexity;Kate Greene, former laser physicist turned science journalist, essayist, and human guinea pig on the HI SEAS Mars mission simulation;and Ashton Eaton, two-time Olympic gold medalist decathlete now working with Intel to design human performance tracking technology.Go deeper into the Zone after listening with the following papers, articles, and videos:“The physical limits of communication or Why any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from noise” by Michael Lachmann et al.https://aapt.scitation.org/doi/10.1119/1.1773578“The Information Theory of Individuality” by David Krakauer et al.https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12064-020-00313-7"Agnostic Approaches to Extant Life Detection" by Natalie Grefenstette et al.https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lifeonmars2019/pdf/5026.pdfComplexity Episode 41: Agnostic Biosignature Detection with Natalie Grefenstettehttps://complexity.simplecast.com/episodes/41Complexity Episode 2: The Origins of Life with David Krakauer, Sarah Maurer, and Chris Kempeshttps://complexity.simplecast.com/episodes/2SFI’s InterPlanetary Project & Festival YouTube Playlist:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYzOPIgwqUk&list=PLZlVBTf7N6GrzcLkqil5vyJQQd6JA-H3a“Alien Nations: Why Life on Other Planets Will Resemble Ours” by Steve LeVine at OneZero on Mediumhttps://onezero.medium.com/alien-nations-why-life-on-other-planets-will-resemble-ours-15fb4ede6fe7For show notes, research links, transcripts, and more, visit complexity.simplecast.com.If you value our research and communication efforts, please consider making a donation at santafe.edu/give — and/or rating and reviewing us at Apple Podcasts. Many of them speak to our interest in realism, which is reflected in our hobby projects where we modify the scale of miniatures to reduce heroic scale. We talk about the following films: Jin-Roh - the Wolf Brigade, Unforgiven, and Blue Ruin. We talk about the following books: Roadside Picnic, The Shadow of the Torturer (The Book of the New Sun), and the Crystal World. Our fourteenth episode in which we watch and review the Russian cult classic Stalker, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky and based on the novel Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers. The premise is simple - the film takes place in the "Zone"; in the distant future, society as we know it has been destroyed, and the protagonist, known as the "Stalker" is leading a professor and a writer to the "Room", a place supposedly where the wishes of whoever enters it are granted. We discuss the filmmaking, themes and motifs and give our own analysis of what the film means to us. In our second episode on Soviet director and auteur Andrei Tarkovsky we discuss his most well known film and possibly his magnum opus, Stalker (1979). The last film that Tarkovsky made whilst living in the Soviet Union, Stalker is loosely adapted from the novel Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. In Stalker, Tarkovsky takes decaying the post-industrial ruinous landscapes and transforms them into the mysterious 'Zone', a land full of hidden rules and invisible threats, that our trio of anguished and existentially angsty protagonists must traverse. Our characters are the Writer and the Professor, guided through the mysterious and dreamlike landscape by the eponymous Stalker. In this episode we discuss the unique artistic and technical feats that make this movie such a cult classic, and some of our quibbles with Tarkovsky's ethic.Edited by Matthew Lloyd Roberts. In this first of a two-part conversation, Phil and JF discuss a poem by Tarkovsky's dad, compare the film with the sci-fi novel that inspired it, explore the ideological underpinnings of formulaic genre, delve into the meaning and affordances of the concept of zone, and affirm that in a sufficiently weird mindset, even a casual stroll in your hometown can become an excursion into a Zone of your own. In a special Landmark edition, Matthew Sweet discusses Tarkovsky's 1979 film Stalker with the director Sophie Fiennes, the journalist Konstantin Von Eggert, whose family knew Tarkovsky, film critic Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, the writer Geoff Dyer, and the academic and former tour guide in the Chernobyl Zone Dr Nicholas Rush Cooper from Durham University. Stalker tells the story of three men - Writer, Professor, and Stalker. We are never quite sure who Stalker is, or what he represents, but it's his job to lead Writer and Professor on a journey into a mysterious region called The Zone. At the heart of The Zone is a room in which all wishes come true.Based on the novel Roadside Picnic, by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky, Stalker is a kind of Science Fiction film with all the Science Fiction stripped out. Geoff Dyer notes that "Stalker has always invited allegorical readings, and since the film has something of the quality of prophecy, these readings are not confined to events that had occurred by the time the film was made." Is Stalker about the end of Communism? Does it prefigure the Chernobyl disaster? There are many possibilities, but the film remains mysterious.Producer: Laura Thomas
