Living an active outdoor life, the idea of heart disease was the furthest thing on the minds of Sarah's family. That all changed, when her father suffered a fatal heart attack when Sarah was just 6 years old. Understandably, this event filled her with fear and misunderstanding, but that wasn't the life she wanted for herself. At age 17 Sarah declared her desire to enter the Miss Colorado pageant--a decision that would set the stage for a new path.As the current reigning Miss Colorado, this 20 year old has turned her grief into a tool for good. The beautiful synergies of the Miss America organization and the American Heart Association partnering to promote heart health awareness, with Sarah's experience inspired her to devote her community service initiative to a heart-felt message. Through her Happy Hearts Campaign, she seeks to educate and inspire her generation and the youngsters coming up behind her to be thoughtful about their choices as they lay the foundation for their future selves.Join Michelle's 12-week YOU Revolution program to absolutely change your life... Sergeant Greg Corin APM - Australian Federal Police 36 years. Such a diverse career from General Duties Policing, Specialist Response Group (SRG) - Discreet Operations Team through to Team Leader, Close Personal Protection team for the Governor-General and Prime Minister._____Listener discretion is advised; this episode raises issues such as child abuse, suicide and other emotive issues that might not be suitable for all listeners._____In this Hot Debrief episode, Matt talks to Sgt Greg Corin APM during the Heart 2 Heart Walk. Greg has led an amazing career within the Australian Federal Police (AFP) since commencing in 1987 currently in his 36th year of service that has taken him all around the world. A service that has taken a huge toll on both him and his family with a level of resilience that you need to hear to believe.Greg has specialised in various operational roles including Tactical Operations within the Specialist Response Group, Surveillance Operations, Close Personal Protection, Witness Protection, Police Rescue and even Water Police. This unique array of capabilities has seen Greg also an operational member of the ‘Discreet Operations Team' - conducting both domestic and international operations. If hunting Columbian Drug importers in remote parts of Australia's west coast sounds intense, you need to hear the stories of being held at gunpoint during UN operations in East Timor, surviving a massive Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attack just 300 metres away in Afghanistan and being shot at by Russian separatists while deployed to Ukraine soon after the downing of flight MH17. Greg's role as a Ceremonial and Protocol Officer saw him involved in the ramp ceremonies for the repatriation of 24 Australians killed in the crash on his return. It is quite hard to believe that this high risk, high tempo diverse service was given despite personal adversities that you need to hear to believe. This episode goes for over 2 hours, and only scratches the surface of this spectacular career, and so much of it he is not able to reveal due to the extreme sensitivity of the operations he has been involved in. So hard to believe we have the privilege of walking along side this amazing Australian First Responder during the Heart 2 Heart Walk. Thank you Greg for sharing this powerful story.____________________________Get it now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and others: https://linktr.ee/h2hwalk

Peter Forbes - Former Australian Federal Police (AFP) Officer and Heart 2 Heart Walk 2023 member. In this episode, Matt talks to Forbsy by the camp fire in a dry riverbed near Algebuckina Bridge, south of Oodnadatta on the Heart 2 Heart Walk 2023. Forbsy talks about life as a kid shooting rabbits to a calling he and a good mate followed into Policing. We hear all about what it's like to be in Police Rescue, becoming a sniper team leader and how he lost a finger in a training accident during time in Perth training with the Special Air Service. We also hear about the highs and lows of overseas deployments as part of the United Nations Policing deployments into East Timor, Cyprus, and Africa. Peter also talks about how difficult adjusting to the bustling life in Sydney can be after postings to these countries, and how his travels now are taking him back to similar countries as he appreciates these different ways of life now as a civilian on holidays. So enjoy this small insight into one of the Heart 2 Heart Walkers, as we mention, these humble people rarely tell their stories so we are privileged to get this peek into Forbsy's amazing career._______Listener discretion is advised; some episodes raise issues regarding mental health, suicide and other matters that might not be suitable for all listeners. This episode was recorded at our first official 'First Responder Engagement Day' or FRED as we call them, at Oodnadatta SA while we are doing the Heart 2 Heart Walk 2023. This episode is with newly appointed Captain Matt Corner from the Coober Pedy Country Fire Service who travelled out all the way to Oodnadatta to honour a promise he made when we caught up with them at Coober Pedy on the trip to start our walk.Matt comes from a long standing family tradition of Rural Fire Service and his recent appointment to Captain now makes it 3 generations of fire service Captains in his family. In this chat, we hear about the massive size of their response area, some jobs tallying near 1000km round trips just to attend. Amazing to hear just how this job is done in the extremely remote part of Australia.Captain Matt Corner - enjoy!_______Listener discretion is advised; some episodes raise issues regarding mental health, suicide and other matters that might not be suitable for all listeners. Matt U'Brien's story is powerful.During his 17-year policing career (mostly within the Police Rescue Squad), he's done literally hundreds of rescues and saved countless lives whilst risking his own. What's unique about Matt, is that during this time he also found himself in the critical position of needing to be rescued himself. For this, and many more reasons, I've asked him to join me for a special double episode to share his experiences from both sides of the rescue coin.We talk about what led him to join Police Rescue, his love of the bush and canyoning, and some of his insights from years of helping out people like you and me, who just love being in nature. Oh, and if you're squeamish about your family jewels, you might want to stop listening between 19:30-21:00.Today, he's on a different journey, one that comes as a consequence of his years spent serving the community, often being alongside people on the worst day of their lives. After seeing some friends heading off to a place he only knew as 'The Shed' on regular occasions, Rohan commenced his firefighting career at the age of 23 as a foundational volunteer at the Molonglo RFS brigade. In these early days, Rohan talks about storing their fire trucks in a nearby farm owned by one of their members while their station was being constructed to provide this essential service, right through to becoming the organisations Chief Officer and senior executive member of the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA).We cover a lot of issues in this episode, including how even 20 years of from the 2003 Canberra bushfires firefighters still struggle in some ways from the event. EP7 - Senator Anne Urquhart - OUT NOW! #nevergiveup ____This episode of the Heart 2 Heart Walk Podcast was recorded in the Australian Parliament office of the Senate Chief Whip - Senator Anne Urquhart. Now this title might make you think of an emotionless politician enforcing the rules of the senate, however nothing can be further than the truth. First Responders will be hard pressed to find a more supportive, compassionate advocate for their cause, let alone having that person as the Chief Whip of the Senate. We sit down in the Senators office and talk about all things 2019 Senate Inquiry report 'The people behind 000: Mental health of our first responders' of which Senator Urquhart was the driving force to establish and deliver. True to her motto, #nevergiveup, Senator Urquhart has not let dust settle on this report, and is continuing to champion change through actioning this report she was instrumental in establishing with Simone Haigh ASM. The Senate Report is available here. The Beyond Blue report; Answering the Call is available here.We talk about some important elements of the Senate Report that is the centre of the cause behind the Heart 2 Heart Walk 2023, including the recognition that some workers compensation systems for people affected by their First Responder roles are likened to a merry-go-round. We also talk about Senator Jacqui Lambie, Simone Haigh ASM, Due South Tasmania, Dr Dan Pronk and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union. With my anxiety off the charts on the day arriving at Parliament House, as I was packing my recording gear in the carpark into my bag, I forgot some critical components of the recording gear. However as any seasoned first responder would do, I had packed a backup kit consisting of my field recording gear that I am planning to use during the walk which is what we used on the day, so please excuse the audio quality! I did my best, but PTSD is hard to manage some days....Senator Anne Urquhart was truly amazing with the H2HWalk Podcast team, and a big shout out to her team - Lennie & Bronwyn that made this possible.
SIMONE HAIGH ASM - Ambulance Tasmania Paramedic.Simone talks to Matt about life as a paramedic in Tasmania, and describes the operational pressures faced by staff, both volunteer and permanent positions, and that common theme - the importance of our K9 companions.Simone describes the impact of a close friend and colleagues suicide, and the relentless drive to address the issue which ultimately took her to have a chat with Senator Anne Urquhart which, with a lot of hard work behind the scenes, initiated the senate inquiry that lead to the release of the 2019 Senate Report - People behind 000: Mental health of our first responders; which is the focus of the Heart 2 Heart Walk.Simone also talks about her frustrations with the lack of action taken in response to the report, and the great work going on in other countries that is yet to be followed by the Australian Government. Her positions in various committees and boards have given her a unique national view of the problems faced within Ambulance and the emergency services more broadly which continues to motivate her not to give up on making sure change is mate to the issues faced by her colleagues. Listen in on an awesome chat, and as Simone says, if you too see issues or problems that are affecting our front line services, speak up! and start with your local member of Parliament. When Amy Cavaliere suffered a SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection) emergency, she became aware of how important learning life-saving techniques are. Experiencing this event changed her perspective on how to listen and trust her body. Every minute that passes when in cardiac arrest, without administered CPR, decreases the survival rate. Knowing how to properly and safely administer CPR can save someone's life. In this episode of Cornerstone Unplugged, JP Cavaliere sits down with Amy Cavaliere, an Experienced Tax Paraprofessional at BDO USA, LLP, to discuss how CPR and AED training can save lives. Amy talks about experiencing cardiac arrest, being an advocate for heart health, and why you should learn hands-on CPR.

Burnout is a Real Threat and You Can Prvent It Mental health doesn't show up like a broken bone, yet it's present Episode 120 (Janice is based in San Francisco) In this conversation we explore: The challenges of identifying and mitgating burnout The difference between stress and burnout - and the connection That burnout is not an on-off switch but a downward spiral Simple course corrections - outdoors, sunlight and social interaction Our health includes mental, physical and emotional How burnout might be temporary How to have supportive conversations with your team About Janice Litvin Author of Banish Burnout Toolkit. (Available at Amazon or her website: JaniceLitvin.com/Book (can download a free first chapter) Keynote speaker and workshop leader who helps leaders and their teams prevent burnout so they can come to work healthy and happy and be productive. She also helps employees change their reactions to stress from the inside out. And she makes it memorable and fun. Learn more at www.JaniceLitvin.com ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Janice Litvin 01:21 Well, I use the World Health Organization's definition of burnout, which is chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Actually, they call the syndrome caused by chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Now, a lot of people confuse the term stress with burnout. A lot of people say Oh, I'm so burned out. True burnout is complete mental, physical and emotional exhaustion to the point where you really have to take an extended leave. Really, when people say, Oh, I'm so burned out, I think what they really mean is, I'm very stressed out. And I might be approaching burnout. And that's important to note as well. 02:11 And how can one make a determination or distinction? I'm feeling lousy right now? How do I know if I'm stressed, or if I'm burned out? 02:23 It all starts with the brain. When someone says I'm feeling lousy, that's a very broad statement that could mean physical, that can be emotional, can be mental. And so it all starts with the thoughts. If you're waking up in the morning, and the first thought on your mind is something you have on your to-do list, you might be a little stressed. And you might want to start thinking about spending a few moments throughout the day, not focused on work, whether that means taking a five minute break outside in the sun, which releases a lot of happiness, chemicals, or calling a friend. And having a nice chat with a friend just checking in say, How's your day going? You know, I have all this work to do. I'm feeling nervous, and the friend can say, well, and that reminds you of things you already know, take it one step at a time. Let our emotions run our thoughts, do the most important thing first, all the things we already know sometimes our thoughts, a lot of our brain with fear. And we just need to come back down to earth. ----- 13:54 Well, I want to say this. When someone is struggling, a lot of people are afraid of being labelled mentally ill. So they're not going to go to their boss and say I'm feeling mentally ill today. They're not gonna go to their bosses, I'm struggling because they don't want to be labelled as that person can't do the job. Everybody wants to come across as being adept at their work and successful at their work. And yet, it's important to it really goes back to what I said earlier, which is people knowing each other and having a good team cohesion. That might mean a team off-site once a month where you go do a charity project like a cleanup day, or, or go feed the hungry or go read to some children something or go on a Heart Walk or whatever it is or left the team, vote on a charity and they want to raise, do their own little fun. charity drive for who walks the most number of minutes or the most number of steps or whatever you want to do. Does everybody chip in, so much money for however many steps they took, and donate that money to a cause that the team votes on whether it's a heart association or, or a school or whatever, and build, begin to take these baby steps toward building a really strong unit team. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by improving your communication skills. Episode 65 is an important conversation we've been waiting to have for some time. Finally, a confluence of events has occurred that make this conversation both timely and necessary to have. Coming off the heels of episode 62 (the IHRSA bonus content) and the questions we received. As well as the Michigan Fitness Club Association's victory of $8.5 million in dedicate State-level aid, we are finally ready to have the advocacy discussion. This will be a solo conversation with our host, and creator of the Wellness Paradox Podcast, Mike Stack. As you'll hear him to talk about in the episode, he's changed his paradigm on the role advocacy and politics for our industry, his business, and himself personally. The overarching message that he delivers is simple; advocacy is essential for our industry to be considered part of the healthcare delivery system AND it's something each and everyone of us can get involved in.In this episode Mike will give practical examples of how you can be involved, why it's important, and what type of impact you can have. As he mentions, larger societal changes (like the fitness industry ascending onto the healthcare continuum) require both top-down policy level change, and bottom-up grassroots advocacy. This multitiered approach gives everyone an on-ramp to helping in the effort to elevate the fitness industry and our professionals onto the healthcare continuum. Enjoy this very actionable and inspiring conversation, realizing there is a lot of power when you understand that your voice, as individual, can make a true difference in the world! A University of Alabama Birmingham researcher was frustrated with inconsistent solutions and processes for purifying unique proteins and set out to develop a new approach for high throughput protein purification. Thus was the seed idea for TriAltus Bioscience, which aims to bring protein purification technology from the research bench to the production environment. The Chain spoke with Bob Shufflebarger, CEO of TriAltus to give the background story and insights into future developments. TriAltus lab manager Naomi Logsdon joined the conversation to share her scientific background and passion for discovery, plus explain the novel technology used in TriAltus purification.Naomi Logsdon, Lab Manager, TriAltus BioscienceNaomi Logsdon is a molecular biologist and laboratory manager with over 30 years of experience and an outstanding record of scientific research in both academic and industrial settings. She is a co-author on more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and holds two gene patents. Logsdon graduated from Rice University cum laude with a B.A. in Biology. She began her research as an undergraduate assistant and was co-author on four research publications studying oxygen radical toxicity. Cell biology and cancer were the focus at subsequent positions at Baylor College of Medicine, DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals, and the University of Delaware. Protein expression and purification became an area of interest at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, where she evaluated several expression systems for use in high-throughput screening. She also cloned two novel potassium channels as potential drug targets. She later joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) at the Center for Biological Sciences and Engineering, where her protein expression and purification skills were applied to crystallographic studies of interleukins. She held managerial and technical positions in several other labs at UAB prior to joining TriAltus in 2019. Let's don't get it twisted I'm running the 8K but since I've started raising money for the AACR I've come to love running – not only am I in the best shape of my life but I have the satisfaction of supporting the largest cancer research foundation in the world that also happens to be here in Philadelphia. You give to AACR and 88 cents out of every dollar goes to supporting researchers working to cure cancers. Your money makes a difference got to aacr.org/donateDo you know what PA auditor general does? Holly Tucci is a model...she looks like she cook be on the cover of any fashion magazine, but the better model is one of making good health choices. Holly was born with congenital heart disease, a heart block. She was a typically active kid, but by age 9 was exhausted much of the time, and told her parents and doctors it was time for a pacemaker. She's had 7 replacements in the intervening almost 3 decades. It was with her last one 2 years ago that she made a life altering, life-saving decision--to get healthy. At that point Holly was diagnosed as morbidly obese. She's since lost "half" of herself, 143 lb. and is a spokesperson for the American Heart Association. Holly says it's about making a decision, and one we can make is to support the research efforts of the Association by participating in a Heart Walk. Tacoma has one on September 30, and Seattle's Walk is Oct 14 at Seattle Center. Every $$ counts. www.heart.org/walk

Heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans. Despite increased awareness, many Americans don’t know this staggering fact. At The American Heart Association (AHA), the goal is to change the public understanding of heart disease and stroke, and fortify Americans with the knowledge to prevent and treat it. At the heart (pun intended) of this episode of “I Don’t Care,” host Kevin Stevenson explores the mission, history, and accomplishments of AHA with guest Michelle Stoddard, regional vice president for the American Heart Association in Texas. At AHA, the organization is driven by a powerful mission: “Be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.” As the oldest and largest voluntary association dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, the AHA has been instrumental in funding discoveries in heart disease research. Stoddard explains, anyone who has benefited from a heart valve, cholesterol-lowering drugs, CPR, or open-heart surgery, has been directly affected by AHA’s research. Without question, AHA’s research has saved lives, which makes its fundraising efforts all the more important. Stoddard expounds upon AHA programs that have helped educate and raise money to perpetuate their mission such as “Get with the Guidelines,” “Go Red for Women,” “Healthy for Life,” and the upcoming “Heart Walk.” This annual community event will take place in Waco, TX on October 3. The walk may look different this year, Stoddard explains, but she encourages everyone to “sign up, lace up,” and get out and walk for their health, be it virtually or safely within the community. Visit heart.org for more resources on how to fight heart disease and stroke.
