Today, we're doing another community requested episode (calling it Fanbruary at this point seems a bit silly) on Shenmue. An absolute classic action/adventure game that happened to be a blind spot for both of us. Shenmue centers on Ryo Hazuki, whose father is killed in the opening cutscene in a pretty rad martial arts fight. This sets up the events for you to uncover the reason behind the murder, which you do by talking to characters, learning schedules, driving forklifts and doing a little bit of fighting yourself. The variety of activities to do in this game are what made it so unique at the time and the fact that all of your verbs aren't based solely in combat still makes it stand out against most triple A titles released even now. That being said, it's an older game and the number of different control schemes and things to do may feel a bit unintuitive and clunky to you now. What hasn't aged as badly, surprisingly, are the visuals, which contain a lot more detail than you would expect from the early days of the 3D games. From character models to buildings to interior spaces, the level of fidelity on display is really impressive for the time, even if it did mean the game had to be spread out across three discs on release. Overall this game is a piece of history for good reason, even if the experience isn't as groundbreaking if you've been keeping up with modern games. We're going to be talking about the more positive aspects of schlocky elements of the game's story and dialogue, the good and bad ways in which the game's time-based mechanics impact the play experience, and we lament the necessity in our society to just go get a job sometimes. Shenmue is a game that really works best if you are able to dedicate the time to immerse yourself in it, and as a result this episode is coming a bit late and also we maybe didn't get the premier experience it could offer. Shenmue. Das Erlebnis dieses Spiels hat sich so sehr in meinen Kopf eingebrannt, weshalb ich auch 20 Jahre danach, noch immer ein ganz besondere Beziehung zu diesem Spiel habe.

Il y a vingt ans jour pour jour, Shenmue voyait le jour sur Dreamcast au Japon. Monolithe du jeu vidéo, pièce maitresse de son créateur Yu Suzuki, rares sont les jeux qui ont tant suscité l'émoi chez les joueurs qui ont eu l'occasion de s'y pencher. "What's Shenmue ?" était une question à laquelle SEGA répondait à travers un courte démo sortie peu de temps avant un des titres les ambitions de l'éditeur. C'est la même question qui sert de socle à cet épisode du Trollcast, à laquelle nous tentons de répondre par le biais de différents axes. Le prototype The Old Man & The Peach Tree, Project Berkley, Virtua Fighter RPG, autant d'étapes qui ont mené au jeu que l'on connait aujourd'hui, et sur lesquelles nous avons pris le temps de revenir. Dans une deuxième partie, nous sommes revenus sur la quête de vengeance de Ryo Hazuki, et sur la place de ce premier épisode dans ce périple qui n'a toujours pas de conclusion. Enfin, nous avons tenté de comprendre comment ce premier épisode continue de participer à l'évolution du jeu vidéo, vingt ans après sa sortie, grâce entre autres à la minutie obsessionnelle dont ont fait preuve les équipes de Suzuki Pour aborder ce sujet dense, Teo le Fou, tenancier du Trollcast, a fait appel à ce cher Shambala, qui a pour l'occasion obtenu une carte de membre longue durée puisqu'il est apparu dans tous les épisodes du format. Pierre de Plein les Pixels a lui aussi répondu à l'invitation pour apporter son expertise sur le sujet, et enfin, en tant que SEGA-Sex de la merguez, Ken est venu participer pour la première fois au Trollcast pour exprimer tout son amour de la saga. Ya os emplacé a este programa en el anterior, porque finiquitado el tema de la demo jugable en el E3 todavía quedaban algunas cosas que tratar de la feria de Los Ángeles con el bueno de Tonichan. Y lo cierto es que aunque andábamos un poco cansados tras más de dos horas de grabación aún pudimos tocar diversos aspectos en poco más de treinta minutos, y dándolo todo. ¿Fue un poco bluff la presencia de Shenmue 3 en el E3? ¿Por qué no tuvo ninguna relevancia ni representación Shibuya Productions en el evento? ¿Hay algo más que no sabemos de la exclusividad de la Epic Games Store? ¿Tiene Yu Suzuki algún privilegio especial al usar el Unreal Engine fruto de ese acuerdo? La verdad es que planteamos y contestamos bastantes cuestiones. Toni también habló de su conversación con Corey Marshall, actor de doblaje de Ryo Hazuki al que tuvo el placer de conocer poco después de jugar a S3. ¿Qué opina Corey del juego? ¿Se ha tratado al actor como merecía durante el proceso de desarrollo y promoción del título? Y hay más, ¿cómo fue la pequeña entrevista de 3DJuegos a Yu Suzuki? ¿Con qué tiempo contaron y cuántas preguntas lograron hacerle? Ahora que lo pienso hay mucho contenido en este chapter, que cerramos con reflexiones del futuro de Shenmue 3 en el poco tiempo que resta para que salga a la venta. ¿Qué eventos importantes quedan por delante en los que pueden haber posibilidades de ver quizá mucho más de la esperada tercera entrega? ¿Qué le auguramos a S3 según nuestras previsiones? We broke from our own set of guidelines for this one, we're looking at Shenmue in honor of the HD re-releases of Shenmue 1 and 2, and the probable upcoming 3rd game in the series in 2019 (maybe).   We dive into the first game in the saga of Ryo Hazuki, who is sent around Yokosuka, Japan to find information on black cars, Chinese people, and of course sailors, as he hunts down Lan Di to get revenge for his father's death.  Does this game hold up at all in 2018, or was a game that was pretty clunky by 1999 standards even moreso now?
