Henry David Thoreau is known for Walden Pond, his writings on solitude and nature, and his staunch, even strident, abolitionism. He is not known for his pencils. But it's his pencils, writes the historian Augustine Sedgewick in our Autumn issue, that have been overlooked by scholars for so many years, along with one particularly damning detail that Sedgewick discovered for the first time: the cedar in those pencils, which the Thoreau family manufactured to great success, was logged by enslaved laborers. That a connection to slavery was “discovered” in the unlikeliest of places—on the desk of an iconic American abolitionist—speaks to how limiting this idea of discovery is. Connections to slavery in 19th-century America, after all, were everywhere and rarely hidden. Sedgewick's essay has already been making waves in Thoreauvian circles, and it has the real potential to change the narrative not only about Thoreau, but also about how we talk about racial justice and reparations in this country.Go beyond the episode:Augustine Sedgewick's essay “Thoreau's Pencils”Henry David Thoreau's “Civil Disobedience”Ralph Waldo Emerson's “Self-Reliance”Tune in every (other) week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Wow, this is a juicy one. My dear friend, Thérèse Cator, is back on the show in this special replay of a session we co-led as a warm-up event for my Witches New Year Gathering happening on October 28, 2023. Thérèse Cator is a trauma-informed embodiment practitioner who specializes in helping people develop a connection to their bodies that promotes wellness and healing. Cator's work provides an intersectional and decolonial lens that is rare in an overwhelmingly white and ableist somatics field. Thérèse is also the founder of Embodied Black Girl, a global community that stands for the embodied liberation of Black women and femmes and women of color everywhere. Embodied Black Girl is devoted to creating a safe space for to heal from intergenerational trauma, racialized stress and colonial conditioning in service of our individual and collective liberation and healing. Thérèse has been featured in Forbes and MindBodyGreen, and she has delivered workshops to major tech companies while maintaining her focus on Black women's and femmes' health. We've been friends since 2017 and over the years have been in trainings together as students, as well as co-facilitated and collaborated on projects. We often independently come up with new directions we want to take with our work, only to find the other was planning the exact same thing. And that's what happened here! We are each offering facilitator trainings in 2024 and we're here to give some insight into our shared philosophical approach. The history of slavery in New England is not well known, but did exist. And while the colonies were rebelling against England and wanting "their" freedom, many New England households had enslaved peoples. In one such household, in western part of the Massachusetts colony, there lived Elizabeth Freeman as a slave. She had already been enslaved in that household there for many years, and as with the unrest and coming rebellion against England, the men in her town - drafted their own "freedom declaration'', which Elizabeth overheard the content. She rightly decides - I also have a right to my freedom. You will hear her amazing story, from Lori Davis, who had done much research on Freeman. Lori describes her quest for freedom, through legal means, and the amazing result of getting her freedom. About Lori Davis: She is a legal editor by day and a history enthusiast by night. Her podcast Her Half of History covers women's history in short episodes organized around a theme for each series, like Women Who Seized Power, Women Who Escaped Slavery, Women in Espionage, Women and Their Money, and the subject that consumed most women's lives: the History of Housework. If You Like what we do support us here, https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support Publisher: Penguin Publishing Group, 2020 The epic story of how coffee connected and divided the modern world Coffee is an indispensable part of daily life for billions of people around the world--one of the most valuable commodities in the history of global capitalism, the leading source of the world's most popular drug, and perhaps the most widespread word on the planet. Augustine Sedgewick's Coffeeland tells the hidden and surprising story of how this came to be, tracing coffee's five-hundred-year transformation from a mysterious Muslim ritual into an everyday necessity. This story is one that few coffee drinkers know. It centers on the volcanic highlands of El Salvador, where James Hill, born in the slums of Manchester, England, founded one of the world's great coffee dynasties at the turn of the twentieth century. Adapting the innovations of the Industrial Revolution to plantation agriculture, Hill helped to turn El Salvador into perhaps the most intensive monoculture in modern history, a place of extraordinary productivity, inequality, and violence. Following coffee from Hill family plantations into supermarkets, kitchens, and workplaces across the United States, and finally into today's ubiquitous cafés, Sedgewick reveals how coffee bred vast wealth and hard poverty, at once connecting and dividing the modern world. In the process, both El Salvador and the United States earned the nickname "Coffeeland," but for starkly different reasons, and with consequences that reach into the present. This extraordinary history of coffee opens up a new perspective on how the globalized world works, ultimately provoking a reconsideration of what it means to be connected to faraway people and places through the familiar things that make up our day-to-day lives. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

Many of us are familiar with the negative health effects of coffee, which include insomnia, nervousness, upset stomach, and increased heart rate. Yet, this hasn’t seemed to stop many Americans from reaching for a cup, or two or three, of coffee to help them make it through the day. One estimate puts coffee consumption in the United States at 400 million cups of coffee a day, or more than 140 billion cups a year, making the United States the world’s leading consumer of coffee. Yet, for all the coffee we consumer, we spend little time thinking about how this reliance affects the people who make it. Augustine Sedgewick seeks to change that with his new book, Coffeeland: One Man’s Dark Empire and the Making of Our Favorite Drug. Starting with coffee’s origins in the Middle East, he reveals how coffee spread to Europe and the New World alongside European imperialism, transforming whole societies in the process. Moving forward in time, he explains how the United States used its status as a consumer of coffee to expand its influence in the hemisphere. All in all, the story told here is about much more than coffee, integrating histories of labor, food, business, and imperialism to reveal how global capitalism creates disconnections, as well as connections.

In this episode of Glitch In The Code, I sit down with the author of 'BBC: Brainwashing Britain' to discuss this fascinating book which I believe should be an essential to anyone who is studying any media related courses at University or College. The Mainstream Media is not the creative haven that is promised to all under graduates, so how far will you go to make your name in and earn those big pay days in the Mainstream Media?! There are many talented and lovely people working at the BBC world wide, but what has become of Auntie?! The BBC is obliged to not have a political opinion due the their license fee funding via the Royal Charter, to do so they would have to find another way of funding their content. David explains why he believes the BBC continuously and even blatantly break this rule, and our in fact pushing their own political elite agenda and Brainwashing Britain. Are we paying for our own Brainwashing? We discuss the BBC Propaganda machine, it's functioning as what David describes as a "Soft Cult" and how you are obliged to enter into 'Group Think' just like George Orwell spoke about in 1984. ABOUT DAVID I'm a writer and bon viveur based near Malaga and, when the mood takes, back home in Liverpool. I write about a wide range of topics from F1 and TV through to Politics and Travel. My pen name is the result of a little bit of Bowie and a little bit of Edie. Just how cool is that?I studied Linguistics at university gaining a first followed by a distinction in my Master's degree. People reckon I'm 'brainy' but when they get to me know me properly, they soon change their minds. In my spare time I enjoy vintage TV - especially from the 1970/80s, Theatre, The Teardrop Explodes, Spanish/Croatian language and culture, F1, Camping, Cycling and the great British outdoors.I currently work as a freelancer and I'm also writing a history of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost's F1 rivalry and trying to write the next chapter of my novel 'No Birds Sing,' a dark, psychological thriller set in Rome. Show notes at: http://www.actualanarchy.com/102 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

Huge thanks to the fantastic band Sedgewick for the use of their song "To Fold" from their new album "Collapse"! I have listened to the album several times in the past week, and every song is fantastic. Definitely grab their album at sedgewickmusic.com, and follow them on Twitter (@sedgewickband) and Insta (@sedgewickmusic)! Here's what Jake had to say about the song: [It] encapsulates a lot of the themes on Collapse for me. There's a yearning and optimistic energy coupled with a sense of courage to enter into the darker feelings. Ultimately the story of Collapse is the story of resignation then acceptance, accepting what you cannot change is the only place you can ever really grow from. We had a few audio issues on this episode, so you might hear what sounds like a distant radio, but that's just because the radio was on in the pod. We forgot to turn it off! It's definitely NOT the sounds of our headphones getting into our microphones. Whatever gave you that idea!? THIS IS A PROFESSIONAL PODCAST.
Shannon Szabados says she wants to have fun and play hockey, not engage in a war of words through the media with her former coach. After the Canadian goalie was released Monday by the Peoria Rivermen, just two games into the Southern Professional Hockey League season, head coach Jean-Guy Trudel told CBC Sports that he only signed the 30-year-old as a "package deal" in order to get defenceman Carl Nielsen, a friend of Szabados, and that their relationship was "cancerous" within the dressing room. Are “office” relationships ever a good thing? A Sedgewick, Alta. man says he's thrilled that he will be getting the $67,692.50 jackpot from a 50/50 raffle at a recent Edmonton Oilers hockey game. "It's very exciting and yeah it's amazing," said Clayton Hinkey on Thursday. He reiterated his plan to give $30,000 of his winnings to three different charities. The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation announced earlier in the day that it will award the full prize to Hinkey even though he missed the deadline to claim the prize. The mayor of Trent Hills is back on Canadian soil, free of the cancerous tumour in his pancreas that Ontario wouldn't help him with and ready to give them Hec. "There was an attempted murder on me but I survived thanks to the medical professionals in Germany," Hector Macmillan said as he landed Thursday from Germany. "I am alive and well and ready to fight some more. They saw what I could do sick. Now they will see what I can do healthy." Bad news for Premier Kathleen Wynne and Health Minister Eric Hoskins. Good news for people in need of modern cancer surgery.

Macallan Orsel is a young genetic scientist working at Rockefeller University in New York City. She and her grandmother are the last remaining members of the Orsel clan, a wealthy New York family of intellectual adventurers. She and her research partner and lover Jimmy Saltzer are trying unlock the elements of the human genome that govern aging. Although talented, Macallan has grown a bit fond of breaking the rules and frequently marshals more resources than the University has allocated to her. When she is reprimanded by Head Medical Provost Rhiner, Macallan receives a call from her grandmother's butler Sedgewick. Her grandmother, Amelia Orsel, who has been ill for some time, has lost consciousness and is fading in and out of states of dementia. Macallan rushes to her grandmother's side. When she arrives, her grandmother is only semiconscious. She recognizes Macallan but begins to speak very strangely. She keeps saying how special Macallan is, and that no one is supposed to know about her. Macallan is puzzled and mentions the word "Leviathan" which causes her grandmother to become very agitated and complains about hearing voices inside her head. Soon, she relapses into unconsciousness leaving Macallan confused and worried. After Sedgewick convinces her to spend the night at her grandmother's lavish Fifth Ave apartment, Macallan discovers a secret staircase under her bed. She follows the staircase to a hidden room occupied by mysterious large sphere with a single word inscribed on it. Leviathan.
