The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip rolls south out of the Delaware mud and doesn't stop until the asphalt runs out at the edge of the wet. This stop is Florida, and the thing waiting in the saw grass is the Skunk Ape, the South's swamp-bound cousin to Bigfoot, seven feet of reddish-brown hair that most witnesses say they smell long before they see.Rotten eggs, wet dog, sulfur, a stink that hangs in the yard for an hour after the thing is gone. We get into the encounters fast and we get into a lot of them, because that's what you came for.A night fisherman who kills his lantern and still sees two eyes burning high over the reeds. A family watching something cross the road that stands taller than a six-foot-five inch man. Hunters who could taste the smell before anything stepped out of the palmetto. A scream out of the Big Cypress dark that froze a campsite, and the thing that came to a four-year-old's bedroom window and held her gaze through the glass. Along the way we work the documented record the way you work an open case, weighing a Vietnam vet and former cop named Charles Stoeckman who slept a month with a shotgun, a tour guide and thirty passengers who watched one rock back and forth for fifteen minutes, a fire chief and a real estate agent who saw the same creature minutes apart on the same road, and the 1977 wave that got loud enough that a Florida lawmaker actually tried to make it a crime to harm one.We dig into the famous Myakka photographs, the two flash shots an anonymous grandmother mailed to the Sarasota sheriff asking if anyone was missing an orangutan, and why a quarter century later nobody's closed the case in either direction. We spend real time with Dave Shealy and his Skunk Ape Research Headquarters out on the Tamiami Trail, the man who's given fifty years and the most argued-over footage in the field to proving the thing is real. Then we do the honest part, the bears and the panthers and the genuinely-real wild monkey colonies breeding in Florida's woods, the skeptics inside the research community who put the credible-sighting rate at maybe five out of a hundred and fifty, and the one detail none of the easy answers explains: the smell.Roll the windows up for this one. Trust me. Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. In this episode, we sit down with director and writer Ryan Shealy, Associate Artistic Director at The Renaissance Theatre, and a longtime friend, collaborator, and anchor in Mansfield’s arts community. Ryan opens up about the evolution of found family, what it means to curate the people who fill your life, and how he’s learned to trust his own artistic lane after nearly a decade in professional theater. From the quiet power of shared creative work to the loud joy of helping raise kids who aren’t biologically his, Ryan reflects on friendship, boundaries, and why building a life with people you choose is just as meaningful as the one you inherit. He also shares how theater both reflects and challenges a community and why Mansfield is braver, more curious, and more audacious than outsiders give us credit for.At its heart, this conversation is about belonging, the art that shapes us, and the relationships that make us feel most like ourselves.Support the show: https://richlandsource.com/membersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Breaking Brett Jensen kicks the show off by talking about early voting turnout and the ongoing state budget stalemate in North Carolina. Jensen reviews updated early voting numbers across Mecklenburg County, noting strong participation once additional polling sites opened beyond uptown Charlotte. He then shifts focus to Raleigh, where lawmakers have yet to finalize a state budget. After playing a report from Queen City News, Jensen explains why the lack of a budget isn’t surprising, revealing that political insiders told him months ago this delay was expected. Jensen is joined by school board candidate Justin Shealy for an exclusive 1-on-1 interview to discuss his campaign for the District 6 seat on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. Shealy, who represents the southern part of Mecklenburg County including Steele Creek, Pineville, and Ballantyne, talks about his grassroots approach, focusing on door-to-door outreach and direct voter engagement during early voting. He acknowledges challenges running as a Republican in a nonpartisan race against two Democratic opponents, including one candidate he says has deep insider connections to CMS leadership. Shealy emphasizes his status as a newcomer to politics and a parent invested in improving schools, pledging to bring “a common-sense approach” and independence from special interests. In this episode, we're heading deep into the muggy heart of Florida — into the swamps, forests, and backroads most people only see from the safety of an airboat. Out here, under the cover of night and cypress moss, something moves through the shadows. Something big. Something that hundreds of people claim to have seen over the last two centuries — but science still refuses to acknowledge. We're talking about the Florida Skunk Ape — the Sunshine State's answer to Bigfoot, and one of the most unsettling mysteries still hiding in America's wilderness. You might think Florida's too developed for anything unknown to stay hidden. But across generations, the reports haven't stopped. Law enforcement officers, hunters, families, and veterans have all described seeing the same thing: a massive, hair-covered figure with glowing red eyes and a smell so strong it made their stomachs turn. These aren't campfire tales — they're official reports, eyewitness accounts, and in some cases, physical evidence collected by people who had everything to lose and nothing to gain by speaking up.We'll explore nearly 200 years of sightings and encounters, from frontier settlers in the early 1800s who described “man-sized monkeys” raiding fishing camps, to the terrifying 1929 incident at the Perky Bat Tower, where something powerful enough to shake a thirty-foot structure drove out every bat inside. We'll look at the case of two Palm Beach County deputies in the 1970s — both seasoned outdoorsmen — who came face to face with a seven-foot creature while investigating livestock attacks. They even recovered hair samples caught on a barbed wire fence. You'll also hear about the Vietnam veteran who, in 1977, watched an eight-foot creature emerge from the mangroves behind his home and was so shaken that he cleared thirty feet of brush from around his property just to sleep at night. And then there are the photographs. In 2000, an elderly woman in Sarasota County sent two chilling images to the sheriff's office, showing what appeared to be a reddish-brown, ape-like creature crouched behind her backyard. The so-called Myakka Photos are still being analyzed and debated over two decades later. We'll talk about Dave Shealy, the man who's dedicated his life to proving the Skunk Ape exists — running his Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in the heart of the Everglades. His 2000 video footage of a creature running through the swamp is still one of the most-watched cryptid videos online. But this episode goes deeper than the sightings. We're asking why so many people — trained law enforcement officers, hunters, and locals — believe they've seen something that modern science says shouldn't exist. We'll dive into the psychology, the skepticism, the cultural roots of the legend, and even the Seminole people's stories of Esti Capcaki, the “tall hairy man” that predates European settlement by centuries.By the end of this episode, you'll feel the humid air, hear the buzz of the swamp at night, and maybe understand why so many Floridians won't step foot into certain parts of the wilderness after dark. This isn't just another campfire tale. This is a journey through real encounters, credible witnesses, and the enduring mystery of something hiding out there in the heart of Florida's wild places.Whether you're a believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, this episode might just make you slow down a little the next time you're driving through the backroads of the Everglades after sunset — especially if you see a pair of glowing eyes staring back at you from the tree line. This is the episode the swamp doesn't want you to hear.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sat down with South Carolina Senator Katrina Shealy who — in 2012 — was elected to the all-male Senate. Yes, it was all-male. And yes, it was 2012... For years, Sen. Shealy was either ignored by her colleagues or straight-up bullied and harassed — even evoking the infamous “Women are a lesser cut of meat” comment from another senator. Nevertheless, she got down to business and became a champion of speaking up for women and children — two populations of South Carolina citizens who went largely unnoticed by lawmakers. In 2021, Sen. Shealy introduced a bill that would outlaw coercive control in South Carolina. The bill didn't make it out of committee. In this episode, Sen. Shealy talked about what it's going to take to make Mica's Law happen. One of my favorite guests is back for another episode - Dr. Norm Shealy of Shealy Wellness. Dr. Shealy knew from age 4 that he wanted to be a physician and by age 16 knew he wanted to be a neurosurgeon so it is no surprise he is still changing the world of holistic medicine at 85. His lifelong quest to find ways to successfully manage chronic pain has led to numerous breakthroughs in the medical field and more often than not have nothing to do with medication or the conventional way of treating chronic pain in the US. Dr. Shealy believes the one purpose in being alive is helping people and that is what drives him each and every day. This intriguing episode of Rethink Real Estate, featuring Wade Shealy, the innovative Founder, Chairman, & CEO of ThirdHome. ThirdHome is a pioneering platform that transforms how homeowners utilize their vacant properties. By allowing homeowners to rent out their seldom-used properties, they earn credits which can then be used to stay at any of the 18,000 properties worldwide within the ThirdHome network. In this conversation, Ben and Wade delve into the mechanics of ThirdHome and how it's reshaping the way people think about and utilize their second homes. Wade shares insights into the inception of ThirdHome, its impact on the real estate and travel industries, and how real estate professionals can leverage this platform to offer unique solutions to clients with multiple homes or those who love to travel.
On today's episode, we are joined by Wade Shealy. With 40 years in the sector, Wade Shealy is one of America's top leaders in resort real estate development, marketing and sales. In 2010, in response to a market need to help second homeowners realize more value in their ownership, he founded and launched THIRDHOME, the industry's premier luxury property and travel club. Wade is recognized as the visionary force behind a series of high-profile real estate development projects. Most notably, the purchase, vision and development of Hampton Island, Georgia, an exemplary coastal community with one of the lowest impacts on the surrounding environment. Hampton Island, a 4,000-acre private community off the Georgia coast, was cited in Robb Report's “Best of the Best” as one of the top three private communities in North America. Hampton Island became the second home to Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, along with Robert and Lydia Mondavi, among other high-profile residents. The Hampton Island development was featured in numerous publications and won national awards for architecture and design. Wade graduated from the University of Georgia equipped for his future with far more than an Honors degree. Working for straight commission, 80 hours a week with the Southwestern Company selling bibles and educational books door-to-door, prepared him early on for many years ahead of entrepreneurial leadership. As a college student, Wade rose through the ranks to become one of the organization's top salespeople, along the way recruiting both the largest student team and the team selling the most volume, in Southwestern's 155-year history. As a District Sales Manager, he was named “District Sales Manager of the Year” for each of his four consecutive years in that role. In 1984, Wade began working in resort real estate, co-founding The Pinnacle Group in 1986 and growing it into one of the largest and most successful real estate companies on Hilton Head Island and the state of South Carolina. As Vice President of Intrawest, a premier North American mountain resort and adventure company, Wade directed sales and marketing for 12 different resorts with locations from New England to the Caribbean, successfully closing over $500 million in sales, annually. During his years in resort real estate, he developed and sold more than $3 billion in real estate. Wade has been featured in national and international publications, most notably the Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times. He also enjoys returning to his alma mater, the University of Georgia, as a frequent lecturer at the Business School, as well as to the College of Environment and Design in Landscape Architecture. Wade was instrumental in the creation of the Land Conservation Program for the State of Georgia and subsequently appointed by the Governor of Georgia, to the State Board of Land Conservation, serving for five years. Under Wade's direction, tens of thousands of acres of pristine land were protected. He was also appointed to the state's Marshland and Wetlands Protection Committee and voted the “Tree Friendly Developer” for the state of Georgia. Wade lives on a horse farm outside Nashville in Franklin, Tennessee. Besides his horses, Wade also raises bees and chickens. Inspired by his early background in nature preservation, he designed and built a natural swimming pond on his farm, one of the first of its kind in the U.S. Wade has three children, his youngest attends Arizona State University, his daughter lives in Greenville SC and is an entrepreneur with a very successful Medical Spa, and his oldest son is a Professor of Sustainable Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech. I think we have a new first on the pod. We've had a few Cabin Culture guests on that have experienced Janice's Cozy Rock Cabin in person, but I don't think either of us have had the opportunity to visit any of the guests cabins, until now. Her new built A-frame is located in Old Forte, just down the road from Asheville and has been available to book for only about a month however, the design and build process has taken up the last few years for her and her husband Eddie.
