Middle school is an especially pivotal time, when our kids start to form their own identities and beliefs - and when we as parents see our role begin to change in their lives as well. Our guest today, Phyllis Fagell, has taken a particular interest in this age group. In addition to her work as the school counselor for Sheridan School in Washington, D.C., Phyllis provides therapy to children, teens and adults in private practice at the Chrysalis Group, Inc. and is a frequent contributor to the Washington Post. She saw a gap in the current parenting conversations, often lumping middle schoolers in with either their younger elementary school or older high school counterparts. Keeping up with the pace, load, and challenge of learning requires emotional and self-management skills – best described as Executive Function. However, when these skills are either delayed, under-developed, or absent it is easy to question the child's motivations and intentions. To speak on the benefits of a social mindset is our featured guest, Dr. Rodney Glasgow, an expert in the field of civic engagement and developing a social mindset in youth. In high achieving schools, the expectations of parents and teachers can be intense. Getting top grades puts kids under unhealthy levels of stress. And is it even necessary? According to school counselor and therapist, Phyllis Fagel, "It's not clear what grades even mean any more. In today's Digital Age, with this many variables [contributing to our kids' chances for success in the workplace] I think people are just trying to control whatever they can. And grades is one of them." Many colleges are beginning to broaden their perspective to include more than just a student's GPA when considering applicants. That's an important step in the right direction. Anxious parents may also be recognizing that grades, per se, don't define a child, but they're not sure what does.
