Today's poem explains why some Australians wear beards.Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, CBE (17 February 1864 – 5 February 1941) was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author, widely considered one of the greatest writers of Australia's colonial period.Born in rural New South Wales, Paterson worked as a lawyer before transitioning into literature, where he quickly gained recognition for capturing the life of the Australian bush. A representative of the Bulletin School of Australian literature, Paterson wrote many of his best known poems for the nationalist journal The Bulletin, including "Clancy of the Overflow" (1889) and "The Man from Snowy River" (1890). His 1895 ballad "Waltzing Matilda" is regarded widely as Australia's unofficial national anthem and, according to the National Film and Sound Archive, has been recorded more than any other Australian song.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. You may have heard the story of the man from Snowy River and his fearless ride through the mountains. This is Colt's story, of nickering mares and a rearing stallion. How did Colt escape the man? What did Colt see, feel and smell as he charged through the bush? Beloved children's author Dianne Wolfer responds to The Man from Snowy River, creating an essential companion to the original poem. It is illustrated with exquisite collages by Erica Wagner, which convey the depth of emotion with great tenderness. They encapsulate the mood of Wolfer's text, transporting the reader into the Snowy Mountains. End-matter includes the full text of Paterson's poem, along with additional information on Paterson himself, brumbies and the Snowy Mountains, and bush poetry. All gathered together, this is a new Australian classic in the making. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to author Dianne Wolfer and illustrator Erica Wagner about their inspiration for recasting this iconic piece of Australian bush poetry, their deep connection to the Snowy Mountains, and the man behind the legend of 'The Man From Snow River'.

The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: voicesoftoday.net/banjo A Banjo Paterson Collection Narrated by Denis Daly Andrew Barton 'Banjo" Paterson (1864 - 1941) may be considered the unofficial poet laureate of Australia. After training as a solicitor he began contributing verse to the Sydney "Bulletin" under the pseudonym of "The Banjo", taken from the name of a horse. His first collection, "The Man from Snowy River", was published in 1895. Two further collections followed: Rio Grande's Last Race and Other Verses in 1902 and Saltbush Bill, JP. and Other Verses in 1917. Paterson's verse reflects the times in which it was written. His Australia was one which "rode on the sheep's back," with vast stock stations, populated by rugged drovers, hard-living shearers, and unsympathetic and unscrupulous squatters (owners of rural properties). He frequently draws a rather idealized contrast between the winsome freedom of the wanderer in the bush and the harassed city dweller, chained to unwilling service at a desk in an office. The subjects of many of his poems are related to horses and horse racing, in both of which the poet had a lifelong interest.
Ever heard of a house having such pervasive powers? Well for Ellie, Dave and Violet, it was indeed a picture perfect house on the banks of the Snowy River that saw them picking up their life in Canberra to move to Dalgety. Like many who embark on a tree change, the transition was not without its challenges. The enthusiastic trio had to navigate issues with water supply, childcare, and their careers. Yet, every bit of effort has been worthwhile, as they now enjoy the serenity of their magical homestead, relaxing under the shade of the strawberry tree. We would like to acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional custodians of the land and pay respects to Elders past and present. When companies lose money they often fire their CEOs, but is that what happened at Snowy Hydro? Rosemary says politics and pet projects probably had something to do with it. Dominion's CVOW project is the first (and only, so far) to be "paid for by customers of a monopoly who have no choice in their electric supplier." Those customers want assurances that Dominion isn't willing to give. Now Dominion is threatening to kill the project. Another project facing fierce public opposition and delays is The Port of Albany in New York. The EPA and other agencies are withholding permits trying to protect fish and wetlands. And the Australian Securities and Investments Commission is being forced to focus on energy technology as Santos is facing Greenwashing accusations. Is wind in for a rough quarter? The CEO of Snowy Hydro has stepped down and we'll talk about a couple of the controversial projects that Snowy Hydro is involved with in the moment and how that might have led to that decision. And then also there is a legal case that's being pushed against Santas oil and gas company for green washing. Joel Saxum: After that we dive into the dominion win offshore project, again, as we've been talking with the last few weeks and some of what the Southern environmental law center is talking about with the capacity factor guarantees and the possibility that dominion may scrap that project Allen Hall: and the port of Albany is behind schedule due to a number of environmental concerns. Allen Hall: I'm Allen Hall and I'm here with my good friends, Rosemary Barnes, and Joel Saxum. And this is the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast, Allen Hall: big controversy down in Australia at Snowy Hydro. And Snowy Hydro is a, a government owned energy utility, and it's a very odd name. Rosemary Snowy, Hydro. I guess it is what it is. It's a hydro storage project, right? Rosemary Barnes: Yeah. So I mean, there's a bit of history. It's an important part of Australia's history actually. Rosemary Barnes: After world War II, they decided to build this hydroelectric scheme. It's, it's huge, you know, as a nation building project and they brought in a ton of immigrants from. Yeah, all sorts of countries, but a lot of European immigrants after the war. So it was kind of a kickstarted Australian multiculturalism. Rosemary Barnes: I mean, we'd already had waves of, of immigrants before that. So it wasn't the very beginning, but definitely lots of, lots of immigrants came and turned the Snowy River in the, the snow mountains. I know a lot of people are surprised to learn that we have snow in Australia, but we. We do and snow mountains, you know, the peaks are over 2000 meters, so that's high enough to get snowed pretty much anywhere. Rosemary Barnes: And yeah, they put in a bunch of dams, a bunch of pipes and a bunch of turbines and made a bunch of hydropower. So that's where the name comes from the snow river. Hydro Hydro-electric scheme. Yeah, snowing Allen Hall: Hydro. The CEO was who his name was. Paul Broad was. Quotes. If that's the proper term in Australia, we would call it fired in America. Allen Hall: And he was closely tied with the previous government that was just voted out. And it seems to be a lot of controversy regarding him in particul...

This was the first joke Phil's son was able to pull off: "What's green and smells like blue paint? Green paint!" He's still working on our new favorite: "What's the secret to telling a good joke timing." Therapy in the future will be Phil's son going into a VR experience where a Pokemon-branded A.I. therapist goes through his father's social media and podcasts and then administers a virtual medication. Other pop stars discussed include Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Cher and Prince. We also talk about non-Pop musicians like Klaus Nomi, Bruce Springsteen. “Weird Al” Yankovic, Charli XCX, Hank Williams and the Ramones. We get into so many Britney songs: “...Baby One More Time”, “Gimme More”, “Work Bitch”, “Radar”, “Unusual You”, “Until the World Ends” (featuring Nikki Minaj & Ke$ha), “Oops I Did It Again”, “Toxic” and her rendition of Sonny & Cher's “The Beat Goes On”. Jake recommends this Mystery Show podcast episode about Britney (though he incorrectly attributes it to the podcast Invisibilia). Phil mentions the Netflix show This Is Pop. The third episode "Stockholm Syndrome" discusses Max Martin's team in Sweden, and one producer explains the piano-playing finger formation the he dubs “hit claw” (which was used to create "...Baby One More Time"). Here's the “Toxic” remix from the Promising Young Woman soundtrack, and here's the mash-up with the B-52s' “Love Shack”. Phil was familiar with Rolling Stone cover featuring Britney with a Teletubby, but had never noticed the Teletubby. The documentary about Britney's conservatorship (and the #freebritney movement) that we refer to is Framing Britney Spears. Here's Britney being interviewed by Michael Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11. We don't even mention that Dan Aykroyd plays Britney's character's dad in the movie Crossroads! Fear not, the saga of bread & butter pickles controversy does continue in this episode. Here's Britney & Justin Timberlake's denim outfits. Marrisa's right, kefir is very similar to yogurt. Other types of alternative milks discussed include almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk. We talk about a lot of different iconic leather jacket looks, including those of Indiana Jones, Marlon Brando, Danny Zuko, Arthur Fonzerelli, Eddie Murphy, Ford Fairlane, Blade and The Matrix. Amber Holm knows horses. She can tell you if a wild horse will accept pasture life, or if a mustang has a spirit that will never settle. She has her finger on the pulse of the greatest roundup in history. The plight of the wild horse in the American West is a story that needs to be told, and Amber is on the reigns. We found her at a wide spot in the road in Central Oregon.
Australia has the largest wild horse population in the world with numbers estimated in the range of half a million. In the Outback they're regularly culled by helicopter and nobody bats an eyelid - the battle between those who are opposed to the horses being culled, and those who say they're ruining the pristine alpine environment they call home. Walkley-award winning journalist Anthony Sharwood has written a new book, the Brumby Wars. He paints the picture of a culture war between those who want the brumbies culled and those who want them protected And… Anthony unearths new evidence that reignites old claims The Man From Snowy River – is part of whitewashed history. As in the... stockman from Banjo Paterson's poem – was actually, originally, an Indigenous man. Ron Connley is a true Australian bushman. Born and raised in the shadow of Mount Hotham in Victoria's High Country, the 84-year-old spent his youth travelling the countryside winning bull-dogging championships and campdrafting titles. But his proudest moment? Taking out the Man from Snowy River title - twice - in his 60s.He's never strayed from his mountain home for too long, and is still based on his childhood sheep station. But don't let that fool you. Ron has an extraordinarily adventurous spirit and has never let his age dictate what challenges he takes on. Hear host Kay Becker draw some big tales from this even bigger character. Like how he ended his schooling career age 13 with his right hook and the hilarious way he snagged his wife of 57 years. You'll want to share this ‘From the Saddle' episode with anyone who loves the bush!

Michael is joined by Alf Cantrell, Curator of the Banjo Paterson Museum at Yeoval - the childhood home of 'Banjo' - regarding the life and career of ‘Banjo’ Paterson, the Aussie bush poet, journalist & author who died 80 years ago. Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong, New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson's more notable poems include "Clancy of the Overflow" (1889), "The Man from Snowy River" (1890) and "Waltzing Matilda" (1895), regarded widely as Australia's unofficial national anthem. Although for most of his adult life, Paterson lived and worked in Sydney, his poems mostly presented a highly romantic view of the bush and the iconic figure of the bushman. His representation of the bushman as a tough, independent and heroic underdog became the ideal qualities underpinning the national character. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2019, whilst skiing in one of Australia's fine winter storms, we bumped into Lucas, a fellow tele skier, whilst frolicking in the powder. For the rest of the season, we continued to catch up with him and learnt that he had a unique introduction into telemark skiing through the now-defunct Corryong Ski Club. We find out just how prolific the club was back in the day and ask why it no longer exists. We also celebrate 1000 downloads. Thanks, everyone for the support! This might not be the greatest season here, but we'll keep the podcast going regardless!
The Man from Snowy River is a poem by Australian bush poet Banjo Paterson. First published in Australian news magazine, The Bulletin, on 26 April 1890, the poem was written at a time when Australia was developing a distinct identity as a nation. The location of the ride fictionalised in the poem was in the region of today's Burrinjuck Dam, north-west of Canberra in Australian Capital Territory. Paterson had helped round up brumbies as a child and later owned property in this region. In this MTC Audio Lab episode, Banjo Paterson's The Man from Snowy River is read by Mark Coles Smith.
When we feel we are rushing down a mountainside in our own lives, seemingly out of control, let's remember to give the reins to the Lord. As we allow Him to direct our lives, we will land safe and sound, no matter how terrible the descent.
Banjo Paterson was an Australian bush poet, author, and journalist whose works focused on the rural and outback areas, especially the district around Binalong, New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. He wrote "the Man From Snowy River", which was transformed into a movie, in 1890, and Australias national theme Waltzing Matilda in 1805. He wrote many humorous stories, one of which tells of a character who terrorized rural areas with his car in the days when cars were a new and usually feared rolling contraption that often proved dangerous to dogs and sheep. Mark Reeves has always had a keen interest in and passion for leadership, physical and outdoor education and health and wellbeing – an interest he lives and breathes. His particular leadership focus is mentoring, surrounding oneself with great people and leadership as a verb-not a position but action! He has undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate degrees from Melbourne University and in Outdoor Pursuits from Plas-Y-Brennin in North Wales, UK. They were tough days in Wales at a demanding training centre – this was where Shipton and Mallory of early Everest fame undertook their training! Ghosts abounded in those hallowed halls and crags. In 1999 he established the Alpine School, Dinner Plain. The school now has three campuses with the Snowy River Campus at Marlo and the Gnurad-Gundidj Campus at Glenormiston. It is the only school of its type in a government system in the world.Mark has always been active in the local community – he is a volunteer firefighter (Lieutenant) with the CFA and has chaired the Dinner Plain Community Centre. The Nerds are back, proving that 107 episodes just isn't too much for the human body to handle. This week, the Professor has a complaint about that saintly game developer, Valve. What's his problem with Gabe and the multi award winning game studio? They're sold out of VR headsets with only a month to go before the release of Half Life: Alyx. The Masters of the Universe are coming back as well. The Professor has another complaint, this time about the casting of Skeletor. He thinks it's ridiculous to bring back Skeletor's original voice in a different role and cast a new actor for Skeletor. Even if that actor is the esteemed Mark Hamill. DJ thinks this sacrilege is 100% ok. The star studded cast list has the Nerds highly excited for this revival. Now that Dragon has been human rated, SpaceX have moved the capsule to the launch pad, and the crew are a pair of former Shuttle pilots. This will be the first manned space mission from the US since the Shuttle program was shut down. America Can Into Space? Soon, hopefully.Professor and DJ have some trouble pronouncing American Indian and Finnish words in the Remembrances and Shoutouts, and laugh at the Boomers who couldn't believe Bill and Ted actually speak like that.Stay hydrated and come hang out with us again next week.Valve Index all sold out…while Half Life : Alyx is a month away-https://www.roadtovr.com/valve-index-sold-out-stock-check-2-13-2020/Masters of the Universe:Revelations cast revealed….and its star studded-https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/02/14/mark-hamill-lena-heady-sarah-michelle-gellar-part-of-all-star-voice-cast-for-netflixs-masters-of-the-universe-revelation-series/Crew Dragon capsule now at the launch site…-https://www.engadget.com/2020/02/15/spacex-crew-dragon-capsule-delivery/Games PlayedProfessor– Particle Fleet Emergence - https://store.steampowered.com/app/422900/Particle_Fleet_Emergence/Rating – 4/5DJ- Warzone 2100 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1241950/Warzone_2100/Rating – 3.5/5Other topics discussedMagic smoke ((also factory smoke, blue smoke, angry pixies, or the genie) is a humorous name for the caustic smoke produced by severe electrical over-stress of electronic circuits or components, causing overheating and accompanying release of smoke.)-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_smokeSamsung Gear VR (The Samsung Gear VR is a virtual reality headset developed by Samsung Electronics, in collaboration with Oculus VR, and manufactured by Samsung.)-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Gear_VRFacebook’s Oculus Quest VR Headset Shipments Delayed As Industry Grapples With Coronavirus Complications-https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattperez/2020/02/19/facebooks-oculus-quest-vr-headset-shipments-delayed-as-industry-grapples-with-coronavirus-complications/#51e1cb152c8dPlaystation VR ( (officially abbreviated as PS VR), known by the codename Project Morpheus during development, is a virtual reality headset developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, which was released in October 2016)-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_VRVirtual Boy (The Virtual Boy is a 32-bit table-top portable video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo)-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_BoyWarcraft III : Reforged (Warcraft III: Reforged is a remastered edition of the 2002real-time strategy video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion The Frozen Throne.)-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft_III:_ReforgedMossman (voiced by Alan Oppenheimer in the new Masters of the Universe series)-https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/heman/images/5/58/Mossman_myp_%281%29.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/340?cb=20111105161316Justice league Action : Missing the Mark (When famous actor Mark Hamill is kidnapped by master villain The Joker it will take all his voice acting skills to escape.)-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL-VHe_4GmEHe-Man singing What’s Going On by Four Non Blondes-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32FB-gYr49YSpaceX Rocket Engines (Since the founding of SpaceX in 2002, the company has developed four families of rocket engines — Merlin,Kestrel,Draco and SuperDraco — and is currently (since 2016) developing another rocket engine: Raptor.)-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceX_rocket_enginesKennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 (Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) is a rocket launch site at the John F. From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands — the Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhi — to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache–United States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848. During Geronimo's final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886, he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. Reservation life was confining to the free-moving Apache people, and they resented restrictions on their customary way of life. He was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, he frequently led large numbers of men beyond his own following. At any one time, he would be in command of about 30 to 50 Apaches. He died from pneumonia at the age of 79 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.17 February 2017 – Alan Aldridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_AldridgeBritish artist, graphic designer and illustrator. He is best known for his psychedelic artwork made for books and record covers by The Beatles and The Who. He designed a series of science fiction book covers for Penguin Books. He made a big impression with his illustrations for The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book. He also provided illustrations for The Penguin Book of Comics, a history of British and American comic art. His work was characterised by a flowing, cartoony style and soft airbrushing – very much in step with the psychedelic styles of the times. His work includes the 1971 anti-war poster entitled A great place for hamburgers but who'd want to live there! Aldridge also created the artwork for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John in 1975. He also the creator of the Hard Rock Café logo. He died at the age of 78 in Los Angeles, California.18 February 2019 – Toni Myers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_MyersCanadian film editor, writer, director, and producer, best known for her 3D IMAX work. Ms. Myers’s half-century in filmmaking included credits as writer, producer, narrator and editor as well as director. Much of that work involved documentaries that made use of Imax technology, which, with a bigger screen and enhanced sound, creates a more vivid viewing experience than a conventional movie offers. Ms. Myers directed three feature-length Imax films: “Space Station 3D” (2002), about the construction and occupation of the International Space Station; “Hubble 3D” (2010), which documented a 2009 shuttle flight to repair the Hubble telescope; and “A Beautiful Planet” (2016), which concentrated on images of Earth shot from space. All had marquee narrators — Tom Cruise for the first, Leonardo DiCaprio for the second, Jennifer Lawrence for the last. She explained in a 2010 interview with The Gazette of Montreal, “The sun rises and sets every 90 minutes in space, which means there wasn’t much time to capture the shots we asked them to get,”. She also said “There was no time or room to say: ‘Could you move to the right? It would make a better shot,’”. She died from cancer at the age of 76 in Toronto.Famous Birthdays16 February 1964 – Christopher Eccleston – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_EcclestonEnglish actor. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong,New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. He is best known for writing and playing his on-stage and television alter egos Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. He is also a film producer and script writer, a star of London's West End musical theatre, an award-winning writer, and an accomplished landscape painter. Humphries' characters have brought him international renown, and he also appeared in numerous stage productions, films, and television shows. Originally conceived as a dowdy Moonee Ponds housewife who caricatured Australian suburban complacency and insularity, Dame Edna Everage has evolved over four decades to become a satire of stardom – a gaudily dressed, acid-tongued, egomaniacal, internationally fêted Housewife "Gigastar". He was born in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria.Events of Interest17 February 1864 – H.L Hunley sunk a ship- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_USS_Housatonic- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._L._Hunley_(submarine)#Attack_on_HousatonicH.L. Hunley or Hunley made her only attack against an enemy target on the night of February 17, 1864. The target was the USS Housatonic, a 1,240 long tons (1,260 t) wooden-hulled steam-powered sloop-of-war with 12 large cannons, which was stationed at the entrance to Charleston, about 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) offshore. Desperate to break the naval blockade of the city, Lieutenant George E. Dixon and a crew of seven volunteers successfully attacked Housatonic, ramming Hunley's only spar torpedo against the enemy's hull. The torpedo was detonated, sending Housatonic to the bottom in five minutes, along with five of her crewmen. Hunley did not survive the attack and sank, taking with her all eight members of her third crew, and was lost. The Sinking of USS Housatonic on 17 February 1864 during the American Civil War was an important turning point in naval warfare. H.L. Hunley became renowned as the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel in combat, and was the direct progenitor of what would eventually become international submarine warfare, although the victory was Pyrrhic and short-lived, since the submarine did not survive the attack and was lost with all eight Confederate crewmen.17 February 1984 – Krull makes its way into theatres in Finland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krull_(film)The film was released under Krull ja näkymätön vihollinen or Krull and the invisible enemy. Directed by Peter Yates, the feature starred Ken Marshall and Lysette Anthony, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com: "A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet." Krull underwent a very expensive, harsh, and dangerous production process. The film's huge budget ballooned, mainly due to the designers having to make numerous alterations to the sets corresponding to the heavily evolving script. The film was a commercial failure upon release, and critical opinion has been mixed, both upon release and in retrospect. Numerous reviewers have highlighted its visual effects and soundtrack, while several critics have criticized its plot as being derivative and nonsensical. The film has gone on to achieve cult film status.17 February 1989 – Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure came into theatres. -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_%26_Ted%27s_Excellent_Adventure#ReleaseThe flick premiered on this day in 1989, and it still enjoys a cult audience today ... so much so that a third installment is said to be in-the-works. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure received generally positive reviews, and was a success at the box office, grossing $40.5 million against a $6.5 million budget. The picture had been planned for a 1988 release, and filming and production had completed on schedule. However, the original film distributor, DEG, fell into significant debt in late 1987, and by 1988 had filed for bankruptcy. At this point, the film was in post-production, and the director Stephen Henek attempted to show around the rough cut to other distributors. Henek said many of these companies were confused, asking him "Are there kids that really speak like this?" on seeing the film. However, the cut had an extremely popular reaction from a test audience of volunteers pulled from local malls, which led to a small bidding war from production companies to get the title.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

Sigrid Thornton says YES to Man From Snowy River Part 3!
This week is a very special installment of the Summer of Sequels with a movie we're sure you've all heard of and have been looking forward to - RETURN TO SNOWY RIVER! ...What's that? Never heard of it? That's strange. How could you not have heard of this sequel to one of the 1983 Golden Globe Best Foreign Film nominees? Sure, Disney had nothing to do with THAT movie, so we have not and will not ever watch it for this podcast (or likely otherwise)...ok come to think of it that is pretty bizarre. Almost as bizarre as Disney's choice to make a sequel to a movie they had nothing to do with, let alone one that is about 75% adult romance and conversations about animal husbandry and 25% insane horse stunts.
This week they invade November 1982 with Macey Isaacs and yell about Dallas, The Man from Snowy River, and the worst thing you could possibly do with a tie. Michael and Pax jaw about George Miller's (not that George Miller, though) Australian Western. One remembered loving it; the other remembered hating it. Have they changed their minds? Do they agree? What happened to Cookie's leg? A couple of those questions actually get answered. Also: DC Comics discussion as Pax reads the early adventures of Bat Lash and Michael checks out the beginning of the 2006 Jonah Hex series.

[Copypasta from Wikipedia] The poem was written at a time in the 1880s and 1890s when Australia was developing a distinct identity as a nation. Though Australia was still a set of independent colonies under the final authority of Britain, and had not yet trod the path of nationhood, there was a distinct feeling that Australians needed to be united and become as one. Australians from all walks of life, be they from the country or the city (Clancy of the Overflow), looked to the bush for their mythology and heroic characters. They saw in the Man from Snowy River a hero whose bravery, adaptability and risk-taking could epitomise a new nation in the south. This new nation emerged as the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. A. B. "Banjo" Paterson and "The Man From Snowy River" poem are commemorated on the Australian 10 dollar note. The full text of the poem is printed several times in microprint as one of the note's security devices.

About Regional – a new place for the stories of South East NSW, in episode 7… *Local Government across NSW is in limbo again as Gladys Berejiklian takes over from Mike Baird as Premier. A sense that they might be in trouble at the next election has the new look Government reviewing and reconsidering some its past decisions. Council amalgamations are at the top of the list. Here in South East NSW, the Snowy Monaro Regional Council has been operating since May 2016 – Bombala, Snowy River and Cooma-Monaro Shires weren’t forced to merge but not given much of choice either. Until elections are held one man is in charge, former Cooma Mayor Dean Lynch. He says the recent talk from Macquarie Street has been destabilising, and has complicated the process underway through the High Country. *Catalina’s Neville Baker is a breast cancer survivor. Recent numbers suggest there are about 120 men diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every year. Neville’s diagnosis came at Christmas time in 2003. It was a rocky road from there, aside from the treatment many in Neville’s circle simply didn’t know how to handle a man with breast cancer. I meet Neville over a coffee and cake at his home in Catalina, just south of Batemans Bay. *The rich artistic community of South East NSW has inspired a discussion paper that calls for greater recognition and funding for regional artists. Lindy Hume is the current artistic director of Opera Queensland as well as being the former chief of the Sydney Festival and Chair of South East Arts, among many other things. Lindy’s platform paper for Currency House describes regional arts as a ‘restless giant’. The paper was launched in the middle of one this region’s most dynamic communities – Candelo. Luke, Kiara and Victoria explore Banjo Paterson's The Man From Snowy River, discussing the Australian culture featured in the poem, and "the man" himself. The post Catholics Read The Man From Snowy River appeared first on Cradio.
For more than 20,000 years the Snowy region was home to the Ngarigo people and a number of other Aboriginal peoples. White settlement meant that in the 1800s the Ngarigo people were forced from their lands. Up until the mid 20th century the Snowy was the province of farmers and high country horsemen as immortalised on Banjo Patterson’s poem The Man from Snowy River. But after WWII, it was populate or perish and in this environment the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electricity Scheme was built. Over 100,000 people from over thirty countries came to the mountains to work on the Scheme. For this episode I recommend you read or listen to The Man from Snowy River: http://www.poetrylibrary.edu.au/poets/paterson-a-b-banjo/the-man-from-snowy-river-0001004 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs_-DKUimeo Email me at: jamesdampier.awp@gmail.com Music courtesy of Dan-O at: http://www.danosongs.com/ Thanks to Ken Dampier for post-production.
