Australians actors have always been Uber talented but they're having a big moment in the sun with the likes of Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman and Rebel Wilson spearheading some trailblaising productions and featuring centre stage in some of the most awarded and revered global films.Baz Luhrmann, Russell Crowe, Chris Hemsworth and a stream of internationals like Matt Damon and Tom Hanks are filming big budget movies here so we need the best educators to train prepare and equip the next generation of in demand Aussie actors.Patron Deborra Lee Furness and stellar much loved actor Sigrid Thornton, now starring in her new role in the Chekhov classic The Seagull at the STC, are just two of the wonderful actors supporting what many dub “one of the best acting schools in Australia” - the 16 th Street Actors Studio.16th Street, director Kim Krejus has brought some of the world's most renowned acting coaches and directors, here including Leonardo Di Caprio's acting coach, Larry Moss, Bradley Cooper's acting coach, Elizabeth Kemp and lan Rickson who directed Hugh Jackman on Broadway. She has elevated what training means in this country and exposed actors at all levels of their artistic development to the world's best.Global guru Russell Brand was so impressed when he visited to speak at the Studio he donated his large fee to the Studio supporting their vision to teach actors. In 2023, 16th Street is planning to bring Jennifer Aniston's acting Coach, Nancy Banks and Actor. Willem Dafoe to conduct masterclasses. So thrilled to have two wonderful talented women I adore to join me on the Pod to talk about their passion for acting teaching mentoring and why Australians have become such precious respected and in demand artists globally.Deborah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/what.ive.learnt/Mind, Film and Publishing: https://www.mindfilmandpublishing.com/Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/what-ive-learnt/id153556330Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3TQjCspxcrSi4yw2YugxBkBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1365850

Screentime Queen Tara Ward has some tips for TV shows to get into this weekend: His Dark Materials: A new season of the HBO drama based on author Philip Pullman’s beloved trilogy of books. His Dark Materials follows Lyra, a brave young woman from another world, whose quest to find her kidnapped friend leads her to uncover a sinister plot of a secret organization, encounter extraordinary beings and protect dangerous secrets (Neon). Seachange Revisited: Set 20 years on from the original Australian drama, SeaChange sees Sigrid Thornton’s character Laura Gibson return to Pearl Bay to attend the birth of her estranged daughter’s baby. Rising sea levels, community cover-ups and some very stormy weather conspire to convince her this town now needs her as much as she needs it (Acorn TV). We are the Champions: a lighthearted documentary series that explores an array of unique competitions, from the quirky (cheese rolling) to the bizarre (frog jumping), and the passionate communities who compete (Netflix). Me-Lee Hay is a musician and composer, and has written scores for various television series, documentaries and commissioned work for Sydney Dance Company and Sydney Theatre Company. In 2017, Me-Lee won a Screen Music Award for her composition in Last Tree Standing. Despite the awards and experience working alongside household names (Geoffrey Rush, Sigrid Thornton, Luke Nguyen), it is not the extraneous recognition that drives Me-Lee, but internal gratification and a genuine love for her craft. “I always try and ground myself by remembering that feeling – from before I started writing music for a career – where I just loved music, for music's sake,” Me-Lee Hay said. “Just trying to remember that passion…there was a reason why I came into this profession.” Born in Malaysia, then moving to Sydney's Inner West as a 5-year-old, Me-Lee learned classical piano from a young age and went onto Newtown High School of the Performing Arts for her final secondary school years. Later on, Me-Lee further honed her craft at Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and developed a strong practical understanding of musical composition for the film and television industry. “It helped me with the nuts and bolts of the business…learning to read a contract, understanding how films are made. It showed how a film gets off the ground and actually gets funded,” Me-Lee said. Find out more in the latest episode of the Passion & Perspective Podcast, hosted by Jonathan Robinson-Lees.
