Aaron Hoffman, aka "SonReal", is a Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter. He took the music world by storm in 2013 when the music video for his song Everywhere We Go went viral on YouTube. His name became known internationally almost over night and within weeks he was signing a deal with a major record label in Los Angeles. The music video currently sits at over 44 million views, but his success certainly didn't stop there. SonReal's earlier albums consisted mostly of rap songs, but as his career evolved so did his sound. In 2017 he released his first acoustic song "My Friend" which had initially underwhelming results across streaming platforms. However, as his career grew and he released more acoustic/folk music his audience continued to grow and to this day "My Friend" has become one of his biggest hits. Throughout his career SonReal has bent genres and released songs that could be considered, folk, rap, hip-hop, pop, and more. Feeling the urge to write more rap music again, he created his first primarily rap album in years titled "All Things Aside" which released August 16th, 2024. We first met and recorded an interview back in March of 2023. Since then we have both seen our careers grow and felt compelled to record this follow up interview the day after his show in St. Paul, Minnesota during his latest North American tour. In this episode we discuss his latest album, performing on stage, writing new music, choosing to become an independent artist, collaborating with friends, staying true to your vision, not being too precious, connecting with fans, and much more.
After another interminably long hiatus, we're back to discuss all the most recent events of our continually unraveling reality. From Nickelodeon to P. Diddy to A.I. taking over our art and literature so we have more time to be awful people, we just let the conversation take us where it takes us. As usual, buckle up and let the earbuds serve you our discordance. Enjoy! (Also, as an addendum, we apologize for the audio with some pretty annoying static from Mitch's end and intermittent static from Lex's end. We had tech issues when sharing videos within the software we use to record. We appreciate your patience.) Sterling Larose is an award winning music video director that has worked Macklemore, SonReal, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and many more. Today he joins us to talk about crashing into SonReal's car, his Juno nominations, and blindly ranking the most popular music videos.
SonReal is a Canadian music artist known for his unique mix of hip hop and folk music. He originally gained mainstream attention when his hit music video "Everywhere We Go" reached over 400k views in it first week back in 2013. Since then he got signed to a major record label, moved to Los Angeles, and put out several successful albums. In more recent years though he moved back home, got married, and is now a father of 3. His most recent album "Nobody's Happy All The Time" features more singing and guitar than some of his previous work and preaches a personal and meaningful message. We recorded this interview backstage in the greenroom before his show in St. Paul, MN while he was on his first tour since before the pandemic. Make sure to check out the new album, and keep your eyes peeled for a ton of new music that is on the way.
Sol is an established hip hop artist based in Seattle. He has been a full time musician for over a decade and recently went on a cross country tour with his friend and fellow music artist SonReal. I was able to catch him before his show in St. Paul for this interview.
Canadian singer-songwriter & rapper, SonReal, joins us on this episode of The Adamantium Podcast. We discuss his newest album, Nobody's Happy All The Time, and the positive message he hopes to spread with the songs. Episode transcript available here. It's a Hart House Hip Hop Education Takeover of The West Meeting Room! Hart House Hip Hop Ed works with campus partners and community Hip Hop practitioners to further values of representation, collaboration, and social justice, as we explore the key principles of Hip Hop and its importance in our everyday culture. Our first podcast led us to the homie, Colanthony Humphrey, aka Cola. H. Cola draws outside the lines and paints his own path in music and in business. The Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter enjoys the abnormal and adds his own color: to punk rock as the drummer of the OBGMs, touring exclusively as the drummer for Sonreal, and Hip Hop collaborations with Clairmont the Second and DijahSB. Our own Marco Adamovic sat down with Cola to talk about how he got into music, connections between Hip Hop and Punk, the Oooh Baby Gimme Mores (The OBGMS) in 2020, who he's become by the risks he has taken, some of the best and worst advice he's heard in the industry, and a whole lot more. We also put together a Cola H. playlist inspired by the tracks he dropped in our conversation, so make sure to go check that out on Spotify. We also recorded this episode while the nation championship was playing so that was an adventure. Well other than that we just really chat it up in this episode. Josh plays a song from SonReal. The guest are running late. So far as I’m aware, my conversation with Aaron “SonReal” Hoffman is the first RiYL to get pushed back due to an appearance on Sway’s morning show. It’s a pretty good excuse, so far as those go. Hoffman is in good spirits when he arrives. The appearance went well. It was his second time free styling on the show, and things went far better this time It’s amazing what a few years and a little confidence will do. The Juno-nominated Canadian rapper’s maturity shows of his latest record, as well. The Aaron LP is his most sophisticated and personal to date, dealing with earnest themes of love, loss and family.
New Week. New Podcast. This week we discuss Talk Radio and the conservative view. I kinda wish this was a joke but it is kind of true. We also discuss a lot of different media. Go watch Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse today. For the AFI top 100 movie this week we watched The Maltese Falcon (1941). Next week we will be watching E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982). It is finally here. The second year celebration episode is finally upon us. And unlike this year we just stuck to the script and treated it like any other week. So this week we discuss the AFI Top 100 movie Psycho from legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. Next week we will be watching Chinatown. We discuss this weeks episode of Game Of Thrones with out spoilers but we will probably be doing a spoiler filled bonus episode in the next couple weeks. Since the end of the series is next week. Josh gives some thoughts on the Detective Pikachu movie. Auston tired to take the family to see hot air balloons and ended up in a 5k. We play music from SonReal and Sublime with Rome. We have a new Cody's Corner. Finally would would like to just take the time to thank everyone that has been a listener, guest, or contributor. For the love and support that we have had over the last 2 years. Even if we don't have a million downloads a week like Conan O'brien we still appreciate every single download we get. Episode 21 of Lasers on the Ride kicks off with SonReal hate (shots fired ahahaha) and more Johnny Cash disparaging. The Lasers find out they don’t know what an adverb is and assign Sex and the City personalities to one another (Akil doesn’t like what he hears, Mike hates Aidan, and Jay is revealed to be jazz dude). A fight breaks out outside the studio and Akil uses Mike’s lyrics to frame him for a domestic, before telling of how he once used pee as a weapon. Toronto’s Caribana is covered and 1967 is explored.
SonReal aka Aaron Hoffman is a skater turned rapper from the ski town of Vernon who now makes his home in Vancouver. He just released a collab album, The Closers, with Toronto up-and-comer Rich Kidd. It's kind of cool to see two Canuck talents team up, right? I met SonReal after a long day in a park just off Main Street and Broadway. As we watched dogs play with Frisbees, I got Aaron's thoughts on SonReal‘s origins, Canadian hip hop and his collab with Rich Kidd. Tracks played on the show... 1) SonReal, Good News “Up Up Up” 2) SonReal, Good News “I Feel Like” (ft Big Pooh) 3) K-Os “Faith (Part 2)” (ft Drake) (background) 4) SonReal & Rich Kidd, The Closers “Mind All Day” 5) SonReal & Rich Kidd, The Closers “Hometown” ALL songs CANCON
