We are over the moon to host Keli Garza, owner of Steamy Chick and founder of Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute, to THE FULLEST Podcast. This author and entrepreneur raises awareness about the benefits of vaginal steaming, conducts research, trains practitioners, and makes supplies accessible. If you are familiar with THE FULLEST and our Womb Protector™ pelvic steaming kit, then you already know this episode is brimming with all things vaginal health, traditional gynecology, and a peek into the outside perspective of the mainstream medical model. Keli's personal lack of satisfaction with allopathic doctors, coupled with a community-wide need for alternative womb care, guided her to the lost art of pelvic steaming. What started as hand-picking herbs and boiling them in a clay pot under her makeshift pelvic steaming stool, ultimately birthed her online institution that offers courses and certifications, a diverse marketplace, and, coming soon in 2024, a feature-length documentary called STEAM.

In this episode, Kimberly and Keli discuss the future of women's health. During this recorded live event from Kimberly's living room, we learn about the extensive health benefits of vaginal steaming and how the shortcomings in gynecological training reflect contemporary cultural politics around women's bodies. They discuss how to bridge the knowledge gaps found in western medicine's approach to gynecological health when it comes to menstrual cycles, birth, postpartum, and menopause. They discuss their role in pushing the science forward with their collaborative vaginal steam study. They go in depth about healthy periods, uterine cleanses, the fertility industry, and the importance of new language that evolves Women's health. This conversation helps us understand how tending to gynecological care holistically is a way to tend to our own bodies, to tend to future generations, and to build mother culture.   Bio Keli Garza has a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude with a focus in nonprofit management and human rights. After I tried womb steaming for the first time this year in a group on a women's retreat, I realised I had a layer of shame around the idea of tending to the health of my vagina through steaming in public. However the experience was profound: enjoyable, spiritual, and pleasurable. I've known about vaginal steaming (sometimes referred to as "yoni steaming") for a while now. In fact, I probably learned about it the same way you may have - when Gwyneth Paltrow introduced it to the wider western world in 2015 via her online magazine, Goop. There's been a ton of negative press about vaginal steaming since that time, probably because of Paltrow's assertions of its healing properties. What is rarely talked about is that vaginal steaming has been used for thousands of years by nearly all cultures, which Garza shares on her Vaginal Steam World Map. And despite all the OB/GYNs that are interviewed for articles condemning vaginal steaming, Garza lists a few of the US doctors that use steaming in their practice. As we talk about in the interview, some of these OB/GYNs have found steaming particularly good for bacterial vaginosis, which has a high recurrence rate when using prescribed medications. I was particularly intrigued about using vaginal steaming for fibroids, which of course I asked Keli about (listen in to hear what she has to say!). One other aspect of the "uproar" about vaginal steaming that I want to point out. Negative articles will often point out that vaginal steaming has not been shown to offer any benefits, and in fact can be damaging. But the problem is, there has been no research conducted in this country to point either way. Yet studies have been conducted in other countries, including Korea, where steaming is like "getting a manicure," it's done so often. So the underlying racism at play - the idea that other non-white countries science isn't valid - is typical when it comes to discussions about natural techniques used by indigenous cultures for most of human time. And since none of the "experts" claiming vaginal steaming is harmful are doing any studies to back these claims, Garza decided to commission a small study called, Fourth Trimester Vaginal Steaming: A Foundational Study. The study concluded that: "vaginal steaming has a positive impact on many of the indicators of postpartum recovery, particularly in the areas of lowering blood pressure and pulse, uterine restoration, initiating and expediting waist girth and weight loss, labia healing, the quicker cessation of uterine bleeding through drawing out lochia, alleviating suture discomfort, promoting bowel regularity and hemorrhoid reduction." There are so many hardships women face with their cycle - from excessive bleeding to no period at all - that vaginal steaming can help with, and Keli and I discuss these in-depth. Keli Garza has a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude. Garza is the owner of Steamy Chick the largest distributor of vaginal steam supplies in the United States. To further vaginal steam education Garza founded a branch of her company called the Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute to train practitioners in the use of vaginal steam for menstrual and reproductive health and to further research on the gynecological benefits reported by hundreds of customer case studies. Steamy Chick Vaginal Steaming 101: How many of you are shaking your heads in amusement? How many of you are doing that but also VERY curious? And how many of you are just like, this sounds weird but I am excited! After so many years dealing with periods that are so heavy I'm left chronically anemic, I had an entirely open mind when I first heard about vaginal steaming. Five months ago, a friend responded to a Facebook post I had written (Ladies! Any and all advice to slow the flow??) emphatically suggesting vaginal steaming. That was only five months ago, but the idea of steaming my uterus piqued my interest so much that I have been following around Steamy Chick on social media, reading her blogs, and steaming at home myself since. I'm so pumped that Keli Garza, founder of Steamy Chick, came on the show and now I get to share this gem with all of you! This episode is your vaginal steaming 101 course. We discuss its ancient origin (this is not some new trend, you guys), exactly how, when, and why to steam—steaming has been shown to help with everything from infertility to missing periods to blood clots. Plus, it literally feels like a sauna for your uterus. Those of you who are following along with my period series, this episode is part II. I am still in my trial period with vaginal steaming and will have a lot more to say about it in the coming months, but, for now, ENJOY this vaginal steaming 101 course. Weekly Challenge: Steamy Chick challenges us to steam at home this week! You don't need to buy anything, you can steam using things you already have: A pot, some tea, salt, and water. I just finished steaming five days in a row as per Keli's suggestion, and I'm meant to wait until the end of my period to steam for three more days (find out why in this episode!). So, my steam may or may not be lining up with the weekly challenge, but I WILL be waiting to hear from all of you on this! Dear naysayers, what have you got to lose? NOTHING. Become a contributing member of the podcast +   My period used to be painful with gnarly cramps and very heavy bleeding. When I went the gyno, I was quickly put on birth control pills. Before long my body had become insensitive to the birth control hormones, resulting in a month long period, and then a time of trying various birth control pills with higher levels of hormones. That resulted in me feeling totally f*cking  crazy, out of balance, and eventually stopping birth control. It took some time for my cycle and hormones come back into some sort of regularity. The pain and discomfort was still there, but I was told that it was normal, “That’s just the burden of being a woman”.   After talking to many friends, I discovered that my story of painful periods wasn’t unique. Many of us, including myself, had started to accept the pain and normalize it.   It wasn’t until I discovered vaginal steaming that my periods began to shift it become pain free. Infections decreased and my period was no longer met with dread. Steaming also felt incredibly nourishing, comforting, and empowering.    I knew I wanted to have a vaginal steaming expert on the show, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect woman to share with us than the one and only Steamy Chick, Keli Garza.   In this episode, Keli shares the science of steaming, along with incredible case studies and research on vaginal steaming. We touch on the perfect period, women’s healthcare, and the powerful process of reclaiming the authority of our own bodies.  I left our conversation with my jaw dropped and seriously ready to get steamy!   If you have ever had a period or know someone who has - you should DEFINITELY listen to this episode :)   We discussed:   How Keli secretly discovered vaginal steaming postpartum and surprisingly found her way to studying it and sharing it with women How Gwyneth Paltrow helped launch Kelli into becoming Steamy Chick Several “medical miracles” that happen from steaming The Power of steaming and how it actually works to help cleanse and bring the uterus and vagina into optimal health - even from extreme pain and health issues How to practice vaginal steaming at home The healthy period and the myth that painful, dysfunctional periods are normal Research challenges and the depth of the problem in women’s health History of Gynecology and it's limitations The worldwide roots of vaginal steaming  Vaginal steaming for postpartum healing   Resources Website:  www.steamychick.com Instagram: @steamychick   About Keli Keli Garza has a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude. NOTHING. Unless your pregnant then PLEASE do not do this because you absolutely have something to lose. This podcast is a steamy one. I met Keli at a vagina steaming workshop and was immediately captivated by her wealth of knowledge, background in quantitative analysis, and grassroots approach to women's health. This podcast is all about vagina steaming, and how it can treat almost every gynecological issue. I know the term “vagina steaming” is not a term many have heard so we will discuss here what it is, how it works, what “the perfect period” actually looks like and my own personal success story with steaming.  About Keli Garza: Keli, aka Steamy Chick, holds a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude. A social science researcher by academic training, Keli has spent the past several years doing women's health research and has founded a new field of discipline called Peristeam Hydrotherapy. Having recorded over seven hundred peristeam case studies, Keli holds the only known research database of its kind. Keli has worked to develop vaginal steam treatment protocols which are now becoming the industry standard. Her approach is unique in that she tailors treatment based on different menstrual patterns and that she works with an Oriental Medicine Doctor who prescribes specific herbs in the formulas.   In this episode Keli shares: About vaginal steaming Why it’s so effective The multi-cultural development of vaginal steaming Postpartum Care and Steaming Yeast Infections and Steaming Multi-cultural elements of steaming and postpartum care Fertility successes with steaming What you’ll hear: Her first experience with vaginal steaming Vaginal steaming can treat just about every gynecological disorder (6:00) What a perfect period looks like (8:00) The benefits of steam (11:00) Patterns, treatments and results (16:30) Cross cultural vagina practices (20:00) Postpartum care (28:00) Allow yourself to heal yourself (39:00) Know healthcare rights (45:00) Knowing your body and body empowerment (50:00) Keli shares personal stories about fertility and vaginal steaming (58:00) Find Keli at www.Steamychick.com

This conversation centers around vaginal health, specifically the health benefits, practice and history of vaginal steaming. I was so SO impressed with Keli's deep knowledge, research, and experience on a topic I knew very little about going into the discussion. I'd love to tell you hearing the origin story of how she got into this work was my favorite part, but I had like seven favorite parts - you're just going to have to listen and decide for yourself what's most illuminating in this episode.
