We are over the moon to host Keli Garza, owner of Steamy Chick and founder of Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute, to THE FULLEST Podcast. This author and entrepreneur raises awareness about the benefits of vaginal steaming, conducts research, trains practitioners, and makes supplies accessible. If you are familiar with THE FULLEST and our Womb Protector™ pelvic steaming kit, then you already know this episode is brimming with all things vaginal health, traditional gynecology, and a peek into the outside perspective of the mainstream medical model. Keli's personal lack of satisfaction with allopathic doctors, coupled with a community-wide need for alternative womb care, guided her to the lost art of pelvic steaming. What started as hand-picking herbs and boiling them in a clay pot under her makeshift pelvic steaming stool, ultimately birthed her online institution that offers courses and certifications, a diverse marketplace, and, coming soon in 2024, a feature-length documentary called STEAM.
MagaMama with Kimberly Ann Johnson: Sex, Birth and Motherhood
In this episode, Kimberly and Keli discuss the future of women's health. During this recorded live event from Kimberly's living room, we learn about the extensive health benefits of vaginal steaming and how the shortcomings in gynecological training reflect contemporary cultural politics around women's bodies. They discuss how to bridge the knowledge gaps found in western medicine's approach to gynecological health when it comes to menstrual cycles, birth, postpartum, and menopause. They discuss their role in pushing the science forward with their collaborative vaginal steam study. They go in depth about healthy periods, uterine cleanses, the fertility industry, and the importance of new language that evolves Women's health. This conversation helps us understand how tending to gynecological care holistically is a way to tend to our own bodies, to tend to future generations, and to build mother culture. The practice of vaginal steaming, also known as pelvic steaming, yoni steaming, or herbal steam, has been around for centuries and is gaining popularity again. Keli Garza is an expert on vaginal steaming, its practice's history, and its benefits. The practice involves sitting over steaming water infused with herbs, which is believed to improve circulation and provide various health benefits. While there are no scientific studies to support the claims, the practice has been used as an alternative form of self-care and midwifery care. There is so much wisdom in ancestral ways of healing trauma, hormone imbalance, cysts and more with the art of vaginal steaming. We talk with Ayurvedic Practitioner and Womb Steaming Consultant, Sabrina of Ummul Herbals, on her family's rich history with herbalism, her own personal relationship with plants, how she was able to heal from a difficult postpartum and excruciating menstrual cycles, why she's drawn to serving postpartum women and how she is expanding her business even further with trauma healing. Sabrina mentions a few resources that helped guide her down her path: the book, Moon Time by Lucy H. Pearce and her dedicated teachers Kami McBride and Keli Garza. You can take Kami McBride's Healing Herbal Oils course through Sabrina's affiliate link here. This is a phenomenal course that I cannot recommend enough!! Nathan Riley is a medical doctor trained in OBGYN and palliative care. He joins the podcast today to talk, generally, about the role of medicine in society, what it has been and what it could be, its beauty and limitations, and working inside the system vs. outside of the system. I really dig Nathan because he thinks way outside of the box while not being so far out that your average person gets lost in the sauce. We discuss the work of a handful of Renaissance thinkers as we go back and forth on medicine, science, and the unseen – and how they can and do balance each other out. He's a grounding presence that brings a tangible optimism and hope to so many issues that seem quite the opposite at first glance. This is the first episode in a series called “steam stories”. I can't get over the powerful feedback I have received on the power of steaming. Pelvic pain has been heavily normalized by modern medicine along with many other abnormalities that can show up during a period. This episode introduces some of the ways that we can support our wombs during bleeding and postpartum. In This Episode 2:54 - Keli's steam story - how she discovered steaming 17:27 - How steaming helped Keli recover after giving birth to both of her children 34:15 - Racial inequities in womb health care and prevalence of fibroids 47:54 - Defining success at the beginning of a steaming journey 51:50 - Practices outside of steaming that can support womb healing and womb health 1:00:31 - Creating better practices that support your health during your womb bleeding 1:09:48 - How women of color are leading the return to steaming and how to support that mission
How has the time-tested practice of Vaginal Steaming, known to efficiently and cost-effectively resolve issues - ranging from menstrual cramps and irregular periods, to cysts and fibroids, to fertility challenges, to a whole host of postpartum issues in dozens of countries around the world, been dismissed by the Western medical model? Keli Garza, founder of Steamy Chick and the Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute, shares her journey of leading what has become the premiere resource in data collection and research in the efficacy of Perineal Steaming, including results from the Fourth Trimester Postpartum Study and the Pelvic Steam Testimonial Database.
Vaginal yeast infections are very common in women. It is estimated that almost 2.5 million are affected by recurrent vaginal candidiasis and that recurrent VVC is the second most frequent fungal infection in women, as 75% of all women will have at least one in her lifetime, and 40%-45% will have multiple cases. More than 6% of women suffer recurrent episodes. UTI’s - The prevalence in women over 65 years of age is approximately 20%, compared with approximately 11% in the overall population. Between 50% and 60% of adult women will have at least one UTI in their life, and close to 10% of postmenopausal women indicate that they had a UTI in the previous year. I am joined again by CHI graduate and medicine woman Marisa Reyes, an L.A. native with Mexican roots, is a lifelong learner, teacher, and world traveler whose curiosity to experience different cultures and adventure has taken her around the globe. She has attained her B.A. in Liberal Studies and a Master's of Library and Information Science, which has allowed her to be a school, academic, and public librarian since 2010. I've known about vaginal steaming (sometimes referred to as "yoni steaming") for a while now. In fact, I probably learned about it the same way you may have - when Gwyneth Paltrow introduced it to the wider western world in 2015 via her online magazine, Goop. There's been a ton of negative press about vaginal steaming since that time, probably because of Paltrow's assertions of its healing properties. What is rarely talked about is that vaginal steaming has been used for thousands of years by nearly all cultures, which Garza shares on her Vaginal Steam World Map. And despite all the OB/GYNs that are interviewed for articles condemning vaginal steaming, Garza lists a few of the US doctors that use steaming in their practice. As we talk about in the interview, some of these OB/GYNs have found steaming particularly good for bacterial vaginosis, which has a high recurrence rate when using prescribed medications. I was particularly intrigued about using vaginal steaming for fibroids, which of course I asked Keli about (listen in to hear what she has to say!). One other aspect of the "uproar" about vaginal steaming that I want to point out. Negative articles will often point out that vaginal steaming has not been shown to offer any benefits, and in fact can be damaging. But the problem is, there has been no research conducted in this country to point either way. Yet studies have been conducted in other countries, including Korea, where steaming is like "getting a manicure," it's done so often. So the underlying racism at play - the idea that other non-white countries science isn't valid - is typical when it comes to discussions about natural techniques used by indigenous cultures for most of human time. And since none of the "experts" claiming vaginal steaming is harmful are doing any studies to back these claims, Garza decided to commission a small study called, Fourth Trimester Vaginal Steaming: A Foundational Study. The study concluded that: "vaginal steaming has a positive impact on many of the indicators of postpartum recovery, particularly in the areas of lowering blood pressure and pulse, uterine restoration, initiating and expediting waist girth and weight loss, labia healing, the quicker cessation of uterine bleeding through drawing out lochia, alleviating suture discomfort, promoting bowel regularity and hemorrhoid reduction." There are so many hardships women face with their cycle - from excessive bleeding to no period at all - that vaginal steaming can help with, and Keli and I discuss these in-depth. Keli Garza has a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude. Garza is the owner of Steamy Chick the largest distributor of vaginal steam supplies in the United States. To further vaginal steam education Garza founded a branch of her company called the Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute to train practitioners in the use of vaginal steam for menstrual and reproductive health and to further research on the gynecological benefits reported by hundreds of customer case studies. Become a contributing member of the podcast + My period used to be painful with gnarly cramps and very heavy bleeding. When I went the gyno, I was quickly put on birth control pills. Before long my body had become insensitive to the birth control hormones, resulting in a month long period, and then a time of trying various birth control pills with higher levels of hormones. That resulted in me feeling totally f*cking crazy, out of balance, and eventually stopping birth control. It took some time for my cycle and hormones come back into some sort of regularity. The pain and discomfort was still there, but I was told that it was normal, “That’s just the burden of being a woman”. After talking to many friends, I discovered that my story of painful periods wasn’t unique. Many of us, including myself, had started to accept the pain and normalize it. It wasn’t until I discovered vaginal steaming that my periods began to shift it become pain free. Infections decreased and my period was no longer met with dread. Steaming also felt incredibly nourishing, comforting, and empowering. I knew I wanted to have a vaginal steaming expert on the show, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect woman to share with us than the one and only Steamy Chick, Keli Garza. In this episode, Keli shares the science of steaming, along with incredible case studies and research on vaginal steaming. We touch on the perfect period, women’s healthcare, and the powerful process of reclaiming the authority of our own bodies. I left our conversation with my jaw dropped and seriously ready to get steamy! If you have ever had a period or know someone who has - you should DEFINITELY listen to this episode :) We discussed: How Keli secretly discovered vaginal steaming postpartum and surprisingly found her way to studying it and sharing it with women How Gwyneth Paltrow helped launch Kelli into becoming Steamy Chick Several “medical miracles” that happen from steaming The Power of steaming and how it actually works to help cleanse and bring the uterus and vagina into optimal health - even from extreme pain and health issues How to practice vaginal steaming at home The healthy period and the myth that painful, dysfunctional periods are normal Research challenges and the depth of the problem in women’s health History of Gynecology and it's limitations The worldwide roots of vaginal steaming Vaginal steaming for postpartum healing Resources Website: www.steamychick.com Instagram: @steamychick About Keli Keli Garza has a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude. This podcast is a steamy one. I met Keli at a vagina steaming workshop and was immediately captivated by her wealth of knowledge, background in quantitative analysis, and grassroots approach to women's health. This podcast is all about vagina steaming, and how it can treat almost every gynecological issue. I know the term “vagina steaming” is not a term many have heard so we will discuss here what it is, how it works, what “the perfect period” actually looks like and my own personal success story with steaming. About Keli Garza: Keli, aka Steamy Chick, holds a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude. A social science researcher by academic training, Keli has spent the past several years doing women's health research and has founded a new field of discipline called Peristeam Hydrotherapy. Having recorded over seven hundred peristeam case studies, Keli holds the only known research database of its kind. Keli has worked to develop vaginal steam treatment protocols which are now becoming the industry standard. Her approach is unique in that she tailors treatment based on different menstrual patterns and that she works with an Oriental Medicine Doctor who prescribes specific herbs in the formulas. In this episode Keli shares: About vaginal steaming Why it’s so effective The multi-cultural development of vaginal steaming Postpartum Care and Steaming Yeast Infections and Steaming Multi-cultural elements of steaming and postpartum care Fertility successes with steaming What you’ll hear: Her first experience with vaginal steaming Vaginal steaming can treat just about every gynecological disorder (6:00) What a perfect period looks like (8:00) The benefits of steam (11:00) Patterns, treatments and results (16:30) Cross cultural vagina practices (20:00) Postpartum care (28:00) Allow yourself to heal yourself (39:00) Know healthcare rights (45:00) Knowing your body and body empowerment (50:00) Keli shares personal stories about fertility and vaginal steaming (58:00) Find Keli at www.Steamychick.com
If you've never heard of Anita Moorjani before, she is an extraordinary woman with an incredible story and treasure trove of wisdom to share. In 2006, she died of cancer. You read that right. She came back and now shares the story openly of what happened "on the other side" through speaking engagements and books. Back in 2014 I listened to her first book, "Dying To Be Me" and it had a deep impact on me. So much so that when I started reading her second book, "What if this is Heaven?" a few months ago, and had the thought, "I would LOVE to interview her!" I actually felt a bit intimidated. It was a real honor to spend an hour with Anita and get to reflect more intimately on her experience of living since dying. We talked about the difference between human love and unconditional love. She shared how over-giving, over-functioning, guilt and fear contributed to her excruciating four-year cancer experience. We talked about what it was like returning to her body, how she works with her inner guidance now, and why this earth experience is necessary. And I especially appreciated her exploration of "health awareness," as often (not always), what is being called "healthcare" is more like "illness scare." Enjoy this episode, and please share if it you find it inspiring, learn something new, or remember something valuable! SIDE NOTE: A few weeks back when Keli Garza was on the show talking about Vaginal Steaming, we talked about doctors a bit and Keli shared some pretty strong opinions, all based on personal experience or her clients' experiences. We received some emails from people who were upset about this, and called it biased and unbalanced. Of course it's biased, it's my show, and I am only one person. So I want to remind you that the entire basis of our show is to expose ourselves to all kinds of life experiences, so that we can consider what things may or may not have value in relation to our own, expand our awareness, and be more inclusive. As a host, it's my choice to value and honor all of our guest's beliefs, experiences and opinions, whether or not I understand or agree. I always follow my curiosity, and we aim to create a space for authentic self-expression. I neither ask you to or expect you to enjoy every episode or agree with every guest, or me. All I ask is to keep an open mind, and if you would like to share feedback with us, be kind in your messages. Thank you! About Anita Moorjani: Anita Moorjani, an international speaker and the author of New York Times Best Seller Dying To Be Me and her latest book, What If This Is Heaven?, is a woman with a remarkable story. After a 4-year battle with cancer, Anita fell into a coma and was given days to live. As her doctors gathered to revive her, she journeyed into a near death experience (NDE) where she was surrounded by unconditional love and deep wisdom. In this place, she was given a powerful truth: HEAVEN IS NOT A DESTINATION; IT IS A STATE OF BEING. During her NDE, Anita was also given the choice to return to her physical form or to continue into this new realm. She chose the former. And when she regained consciousness, her cancer began to heal. To the amazement of her doctors, she was free of countless tumors and cancer indicators within weeks. Anita’s NDE has captured the hearts and attention of millions across the globe. She has been a featured guest on The Dr. Oz Show, Fox News, The Today Show, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, the National Geographic Channel, as well as The Pearl Report in Hong Kong, Headstart with Karen Davila in the Philippines, and many others. In this episode, Anita shares: 1. What Anita means by "health awareness" instead of "illness scare" 2. How to stay connected to Source when "reality" sets in 3. Self-love 4. Why she returned from her Near Death Experience (NDE)
I know I say this a lot, but I LOVED doing this interview. Keli Garza, founder of Steamy Chick is brilliant, hilarious and passionate. This conversation centers around vaginal health, specifically the health benefits, practice and history of vaginal steaming. I was so SO impressed with Keli's deep knowledge, research, and experience on a topic I knew very little about going into the discussion. I'd love to tell you hearing the origin story of how she got into this work was my favorite part, but I had like seven favorite parts - you're just going to have to listen and decide for yourself what's most illuminating in this episode. Enjoy! About Keli Garza: Keli Garza holds a Masters degree in International Development graduating cum laude.
