In this episode we interview Dhoruba Bin Wahad. A leading member of the New York Black Panther Party, a Field Secretary of the BPP responsible for organizing chapters throughout the East Coast, and a member of the Panther 21. He is a veteran and co-founder of the Black Liberation Army and a former political prisoner. He - and Geronimo ji Jaga Pratt - are, we believe, the only two Black political prisoners to use COINTELPRO documents to secure their release from political imprisonment. Both the FBI and NYPD settled with Dhoruba in lawsuits he filed against them for framing him. There are a number of great writings and conversations with Dhoruba Bin Wahad out there. But we asked Dhoruba to do this episode to discuss his political philosophy. He found our approach to that a bit humorous at times, but as one of our favorite thinkers, and someone who embodies their theory in social practice to a degree few of us can imagine, we hoped to contribute to his legacy in this way. In this conversation we cover some common themes in Dhoruba's writing, we ask about his ideology, his frequent use of the term “whirlwind,” Democratic Fascism, his emphasis on humanism, and the differing historical destinies of white and Black people in the US. Dhoruba talks about demands, encapsulation, the local nature of politics, Black sovereign thinking, solidarity, united fronts and political consequences for injustice. We also discuss the iconification of Assata Shakur and what it means to support the right of self-determination and the people who become political prisoners for exercising that right. There were other questions and follow-ups we wanted to ask, but time did not allow for it. We hope that if possible we will be able to record a part 2 in the future. More importantly, we want to note that we are not requesting financial support for our platform for this episode. Instead what we hope our listeners will do is contribute to the GoFundMe that Community Movement Builders has set up for Dhoruba Bin Wahad's medical fund. Dhoruba has stage 4 cancer and is in need of financial support. The GoFundMe will only be up for two more weeks, so if you can give something to that, please do so now. We'll include a link to that in the show notes. Links: The GoFundMe Dhoruba's website  Dhoruba's content on imixwhatilike. Dhoruba's content on Black Power Media. Episode 85 discusses the recent HBO horror television series Lovecraft Country (2020), developed by Misha Green as a continuation of Matt Ruff's 2016 novel, and places the story of 1950s racial segregation in the United States on a collision course with the science-fiction world of H.P. Lovecraft. Joining Chris and Alex for this latest episode is Dr. Bambi Haggins, Associate Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies at UC Irvine whose work explores race, class, gender and sexuality in American comedy across media and television history. She is also the author of Laughing Mad: The Black Comic Persona in Post-Soul America (2007), while her current book project, Still Laughing, Still Black examines how Black comedy, culture and reception in the new millennium reflect, refract and reveal the necessity and the power of Black comic discourse and survival laughter since 2008. Listen as the trio discuss structuring relationships within Lovecraft Country between identity, race and imagination; the stakes of the programme's application and reworking of ‘Lovecraftian' imagery within an oppressive Jim Crow setting; discourses of reconstruction and restoration within both digital VFX post-production work and post-Civil War America; the (re)centring of blackness and the ambivalent power of whiteness as it manifests across the series' performances; the CGI Cthulu creatures (Shoggoths) that are central to the programme's allegorical treatment of Black survival and fear; and how Lovecraft Country uses generic hybridity and the threat of fantasy to engage with a narrative of a racial reckoning.

00:40 - We back! The ladies are ready for a new season and are going to push their conversations to the next level to address and reflect on what is happening in the world. 2:20 - Meka gives a life update about her career and catches us up on changes that she has been through in recent months. She made plans to leave her job in June, but Covid came through and changed everything.  6:15 - The ladies reflect on how Covid has impacted their lives, how it has been a humbling experience, and how it has been a strangely positive opportunity for true rest. They speak on how they have been able to reconnect and be involved more deeply in their children’s lives (even though it can make you crazy sometimes). 9:00 - The theme of today’s episode is grounded in real, honest talk about being Black in America, how Black Lives Matter and how that applies to Black women and mothers, and how to find courage through all that is happening in this country right now.  11:20 - Meek shares about explaining to her son about slavery and their ancestors, about the strength of Black history, and how nothing has meaningfully changed since then. More needs to be done. 12:40 - Meek and Nique reflect on how they coped with the heartbreaking murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and how deeply it impacted them as individuals, as Black women, and what action they began to see around them as a reaction to these crimes.  15:50 - Nique shares her frustration around the white women who reached out on social media after George Floyd’s murder, that those messages felt disingenuine because they had never reached out before, didn’t follow any other Black people on socials, and it seemed more like a “am I a good white person” check. 18:06 - Meek shares an experience about picking up her son from daycare (pre-Covid) where another mother asked who she was and why she was there… because she had never seen Meek before. It’s incredibly infuriating to have people question Black parents who are simply just parenting, or doing anything else! 22:40 - Meek shares a quote: “Look at Black people, learning stocks, buying plants, saving money, prioritizing health, exercising, uniting, progressing. Rest looks so good on us.” This quote is so perfect for what they need right now, and encapsulates what the ladies are so excited for this season.  24:21 - Nique reflects on balancing the work and the rest, in combination with her husband who is working hard to tackle Covid, and teaming up to ensure that there is Covid testing accessibility in black communities that need it! 27:45 - “It’s not an if, it’s a when.” Meek and Nique discuss what it’s like to live every day in this world as a Black person, as a Black woman, and a Black mother. The fear that they carry every day is not right and needs to change, but it has made them strong. We will come back to this all season long, this is the real and raw work. 29:05 - But here’s the tea for today! Nique is sipping on Rosehip and Camomile to help with the zen needed to address the topics in today’s episode. Meek is sipping on her go-to of Peach, Ginger, and Mint tea, because when she finds something she likes, she sticks with it. 31:11 - What do you call Drive Tracks in the time of Covid? Mommy Mood Makers? We’ll come up with a new name... Meek and Nique have been listening to Triggered by Jhene Aiko and Black by Buddy. Give these a listen until next time!Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on social media! Meka’s blog is Hanging with the Harrells and her instagram is @hwthblog.Nique can be found at White Coat Wifey and followed at @whitecoatwifey! Follow the show at @teawithmeekandnique on Insta to see behind-the-scenes and more content, say hello to your fearless hosts at meekandnique.com, and tune in for the next episode!

Black Republicans definitely get a bad rap. And sometimes that rap is deserved. Certainly after the recent Black History Listening Session, and pastors arranging sit-downs with "gang thugs" the credibility of Black Republicans is questionable. But what if there is a different rap? What if there are "alternative facts" that would allow you to connect with "woke" brothers and sisters who are Republican? Raynard Jackson isn't afraid to confront the GOP. And he's the founder of Black Americans for a Better Future, where he works to assert the position of credible Black men and women in the Party structure of the GOP. He is not one of those Black Republicans who's beholden to the Party and committed to toeing the Party line at the expense of his street cred. Rather, he's galvanizing men and women who are unapologetically Black and unapologetically Republican. And, in this episode he'll tell you more about his vision for Black Republicans and how that vision fits into the overarching agenda of Blacks in America - both Republican and Democrat. Todays guest was born and raised in Long Island, New York, and became a graduate of Yale University in 2004 where she gained a B.A, with distinction in Latin American Studies. And according to her profile she then began working straight afterwards as an intern for Chimpanzee Productions, where she assisted in the making of the feature-length documentary "The Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela." Later after working for Viacom for four years producing educational on-air and web videos for Nickelodeon, she moved on to film school and went after additional education in the area that she had been working. She decided that she needed more tuition in film production, when so many people would be saying that's job done...time to be and adult and earn the bucks, this time she studied M.F.A, Film & Media Production. And this time it seems to have been the lost block to the career that she truly wanted, and could see clearly in front of her. Both sets of knowledge gained at Yale and Texas came together, and she has since directed and produced numerous short documentary and narrative films focusing on racial identity and belonging. Her documentary film, Still Black, At Yale, screened at over twenty international film festivals and educational conferences including the Pan African Film Festival and the San Francisco Black Film Festival Whilst even Forbes recognized her innovative film-based wellness efforts calling her work the “Smartest, Sexiest Workout Videos Ever.” And believe me I have watched them, and had to have a cold shower afterwards. So how did she find the thing that she truly wanted in her life, luck, hard work, or a bit of both? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Monique Walton

"The New Black doesn't blame other races for our issues. The New Black dreams and realizes that it's not pigmentation; it's a mentality. And it's either going to work for you, or it's going to work against you. And you've got to pick the side you're gonna be on." Pharrel Williams "I'm tired of being labeled. I'm not an African American, I'm an American." Raven Symone The ‘new Black' mentality is embraced by some and loathed by others. Is the Black community setting itself up for another wave of division, or can a common ground be found? Tune in tonight for an interesting conversation on what it means to be ‘Black' in America.

ON OUR SECOND PAGE A BROTHER’S BEAT DOWN: A MESSAGE TO BLACK AMERICA It is just not ALL ABOUT HIM. IT IS ABOUT US AS WELL. President Barack Obama, the first African-American President since Reconstruction, has been the victim of brutal attacks since he took office. This onslaught of white supremacy and racial hatred has not only rendered him confused and ineffectual, all Black people are the targets as well. They can’t deport us, so they despise and dismiss us and slash and dash at our greatest aspirations. How do WE get our groove back ?
