The 1948 NFL season marks a significant chapter in the annals of American football, particularly for the Philadelphia Eagles, who emerged victorious in a championship rematch against the Chicago Cardinals, thus securing their first title. In this enlightening discussion, I, along with our esteemed guest Brian Michael, delve into the intricacies of that season, characterized by the Eagles' remarkable transformation from perennial underperformers to champions, primarily attributed to the astute leadership of Coach Greasy Neal and the contributions of key players such as Steve Van Buren. We explore the context of the era, where the lingering effects of World War II had reshaped rosters and infused a sense of urgency and enthusiasm within the league. The narrative unfolds not only the strategic plays and pivotal moments from the championship game, which was played under treacherous weather conditions, but also the broader implications of this victory for the identity and future of football in Philadelphia. As we recount these historical events, we invite listeners to reflect on the enduring legacy of the Eagles and the rich tapestry of football history that continues to resonate today.Find more from Brian at ShibeVintageSports.comJoin us at the Pigskin Dispatch website and the Sports Jersey Dispatch to see even more Positive football news! In the first installment of a summer advice series, Jenée Desmond-Harris, writer and host of Slate's Dear Prudence podcast and column, and Brian offer advice to listeners struggling with a dilemma, and callers weigh in with their opinions. First Letter: Dear Prudence (and Brian): I live in a 'luxury' high rise condo in Brooklyn. A few of our neighbors are in the habit of storing various items in our common hallway, ranging from doormats to stacks of empty water cooler jugs to baby strollers. (including one 2 feet from my door) Beyond the fact that they're unsightly, they represent a violation of NYC's fire code. Not wanting to offend people we see on a daily basis, we notified building management and they have sent a few email reminders to residents, but to no avail. Should I accept this as a fact of life in a building that is not a co-op and therefore lacks a share-holders' board of rule enforcers or should I somehow escalate my concerns? Second Letter: Dear Prudence (and Brian): Michael, a friend of mine for over 35 years, is now 67 years old. A shift is taking place: Michael does not have personal conversations with me anymore, instead he speaks to me as if giving a lecture. Loud, forceful diatribes about politics, money, relationships…. He is the EXPERT on all things now. This tendency is relatively new, and I have witnessed this shift gradually over the last few years (especially about politics – and we are both progressive liberals). I want to be supportive of Paul, but I find myself getting sucked into his rants, and these turn into arguments between us, usually over obscure and meaningless facts. Some background: Each of us are now experiencing age-based health issues, along with family stuff like aging parents. I've witnessed that he goes on automatic overdrive ramping up any simple talk into an argument. And now I'm avoiding speaking with him about anything. How do I shift these conversations into meaningful personal and heartfelt talks about each of our lives, instead of these 'fact' arguments? We have had so many great supportive conversations over these many years, and I miss them. How do I kindly head off his rants at the pass?

Watch the live stream: Watch on YouTube About the show Sponsored by Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub. Special guest: Emily Morehouse-Valcarcel Michael #1: Async and await with subprocesses by Fredrik Averpil People know I do all sorts of stuff with async Lots of cool async things are not necessarily built into Python, but our instead third-party packages E.g. files via aiofiles But asyncio has asyncio.create_subprocess_exec Fredrik's article has some nice examples I started using this for mp3 uploads and behind the scenes processing for us Brian #2: Typesplainer Arian Mollik Wasi, @wasi_master Suggested by Will McGugan Now released a vscode extension for that! Available on vscode as typesplainer Emily #3: Ibis Project via Marlene Mhangami “Productivity-centric Python data analysis framework for SQL engines and Hadoop” focused on: Type safety Expressiveness Composability Familiarity Marlene wrote an excellent blog post as an introduction Works with tons of different backends, either directly or via compilation Depending on the backend, it actually uses SQLAlchemy under the hood There's a ton of options for interacting with a SQL database from Python, but Ibis has some interesting features geared towards performance and analyzing large sets of data. It's a great tool for simple projects, but an excellent tool for anything data science related since it plays so nicely with things like pandas Michael #4: ASV via Will McGugan AirSpeed Velocity (asv) is a tool for benchmarking Python packages over their lifetime. Runtime, memory consumption and even custom-computed values may be tracked. See quickstart Example of astropy here. Finding a commit that produces a large regression Brian #5: perflint Anthony Shaw pylint extension for performance anti patterns curious why a pylint extension and not a flake8 plugin. I think the normal advice of “beware premature optimization” is good advice. But also, having a linter show you some code habits you may have that just slow things down is a nice learning tool. Many of these items are also not going to be the big show stopper performance problems, but they add unnecessary performance hits. To use this, you also have to use pylint, and that can be a bit painful to start up with, as it's pretty picky. Tried it on a tutorial project today, and it complained about any variable, or parameter under 3 characters. Seems a bit picky to me for tutorials, but probably good advice for production code. These are all configurable though, so you can dial back the strictness if necessary. perflint checks: W8101 : Unnessecary list() on already iterable type W8102: Incorrect iterator method for dictionary W8201: Loop invariant statement (loop-invariant-statement) ←- very cool W8202: Global name usage in a loop (loop-invariant-global-usage) R8203 : Try..except blocks have a significant overhead. Avoid using them inside a loop (loop-try-except-usage). W8204 : Looped slicing of bytes objects is inefficient. Use a memoryview() instead (memoryview-over-bytes) W8205 : Importing the "%s" name directly is more efficient in this loop. (dotted-import-in-loop) Emily #6: PEP 594 Acceptance “Removing dead batteries from the standard library” Written by Christian Heimes and Brett Cannon back in 2019, though the conversation goes back further than that It's a very thin line for modules that might still be useful to someone versus the development effort needed to maintain them. Recently accepted, targeting Python 3.11 (final release planned for October 2022, development begins in May 2021. SEGMENT 1Kevin opens up this episode by sharing his value of being inclusive of all people, no matter the identity and make-up of a person. He continues to show his support for all communities, including the LGBTQ+ community. However, because he wasn't educated on transgender people, he is begins to talk more on wanting to learn and understand more about this specific community. To shine a spotlight on Pride month, Kevin hopes to open his listener's minds and hearts while they listen to this episode. After being casted in a one act play in NYC and getting to know his fellow costar, Brian Michael, he later finds out years later something he wasn't aware of after running into him at an airport. He continues this story after the break.SEGMENT 2Coming back from the break, Kevin continues with this story by talking about his conversation with Brian, his past co-star. Kevin heard Brian was going to be in another television show and that GLAD was involved in this show as well, which sparks his confusion on why GLAD would be included in this. While Kevin was on his plane ride and unable to see the show Brian is on, the next morning he saw the many messages from celebrities praising his friends' role in the TV show. Eventually, Kevin became more confused as he remembers Brian speaking about his past track records from shot put. However, once Kevin read a headline stating Brian's groundbreaking work into playing a transgender role as a transgender person on “Queen Sugar”, then, Kevin put everything together and understood Brian is a transgender male. So, he reached out to his friend to further discuss this with him and explain his unawareness of his identity. This understanding helped enlighten Kevin on this community and he wanted to share this great story during Pride monthSEGMENT 3Now, we are joined by special guest Eliza VanCourt, author of “A Woman's Guide to Claiming Space”. They originally knew each other while on set of a movie, and now they are here to speak more about her book. After experiencing a difficult brain injury, Eliza was able to understand communication in a deeper way that she wanted to share with the world. But when she found herself answering more questions after her TED talks because females were too afraid to ask them in front of other males, she realized the five main questions she was answering could benefit others if she wrote about this in her book. These five areas of claiming space include claiming space with your physicality and voice, collaborating with others, not displacing yourself or letting others impede on your space, and claiming space intersectionality. Eliza and Kevin discuss the implications of a man not choosing to understand the experiences women go through that they don't experience, which are written about in this book.SEGMENT 4Kevin asks Eliza to share key advice she would give to someone who feels their space is being taken away from someone. Eliza shares that her book is meant to be a guided book, so that her readers can revisit different chapters during various experiences. She believes getting anti-mentors out of your life is one key step you can take to reclaim your space. By identifying an anti-mentor, or someone who takes up your space, it brings you closer to finding a positive mentor in your life that can instead provide support and guidance in your space. They then speak more on the importance of not beating yourself up over past mistakes and working more on what you can do in the present moment with new knowledge and understanding of not taking away space from someone else. By being aware of things that have been handled wrong, it makes it more feasible to not repeat them again in the future. Be sure to buy “A Woman's Guide to Claiming Space” to learn more on claiming space in your own life!

Back in my college days, I used to think leadership was when someone knew all the answers and directed the team on what to do. A lot of that came from what I had seen on TV growing up, and some of that came from experience seeing leaders execute. The one thing however that I realized as I embarked on my tech career was that the leaders that are actually successful - are the ones that are able to earn the respect of their teams, and not necessarily those who are liked or make the most popular choices. This was further solidified as I started to look back at some of my great coaches, and one thing that stood out was their ability to lead a team, being respected, and being there every step of the way. If you're looking to further uncover this, then this week's episode is for you. Brian Michael Cooper is a member of the Houston office of Frost Brown Todd LLC specializing in sports, entertainment, and media transactions. He is admitted to practice in Texas, New York, and Colorado. Brian has served as president of two professional sports teams, most recently the XFL Houston Roughnecks, where he received recognition for his work in the Sports Business Journal. tanvirbhangoo.com TBX Digital inc.

When Brian Michael Smith considers a role, he thinks about the impact it will have on audiences. And being the first out black trans man cast as a series regular on broadcast TV, he knows his art is his advocacy. It was his role as “Toine Wilkins”, a transgender police officer on Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed hit series Queen Sugar that opened doors. It was also a chance for him to come out publicly in the most authentic way possible - through his craft as an actor. He knew his work came with a bigger responsibility and Hollywood noticed. Soon after, came “Pierce Williams” on The L Word: Generation Q and most recently as “Paul Stickland, a transgender male firefighter on 9-1-1 Lonestar. But behind each character is a husband, a son, an advocate and a friend. I met Brian on the set of Daily Burn 365, the live-streaming fitness show that we were cast on in 2015. It wasn’t long before you could tell his energy, empathy and engaging personality won hearts - not only with the cast and crew, but the community, as well. On this episode of HIListically Speaking, Brian shares more about life on camera and what it means to stay mindful, be grateful and to “know thyself”. For more about Brian, visit www.thebrianmichael.com If you have a great story to tell or just want to connect, I’d love to hear from you. - Hilary HIListically Speaking with Hilary Russo is created/Hosted by Hilary Russo, produced by Alan Seales, with music by Lipbone Redding. You may have seen Brian Michael Smith on "Girls," "Law and Order," "Blue Bloods," or other television shows and commercials, playing cisgender men. Now he appears on the OWN Network's "Queen Sugar," playing a transgender cop — and earlier this summer, Brian came out as trans himself. He joins us this week to talk about visibility and representation, and his first day on the set. "Honestly, it was like going to black heaven," he says. "It was a dream come true in so many ways." Later in the show, we meet Lori Selke, an activist and journalist who was recently profiled in The Advocate. From the outside her family looks pretty typical: a woman, a man, and a couple adorable kids. But actually, Lori's butch, her husband Gus is a self-described dandy, and they're both queer and polyamorous. You might think of it as a different kind of passing, but Lori just says her family is "queerer than we look." [Brian Michael Smith photo by Ben Enser]

Brian Michael Goss, professor of communication at St. Louis University in Madrid, has taken one of media’s most studied theories and given it a facelift. In Rebooting the Herman and Chomsky Propaganda Model in the Twenty-First Century (Peter Lang, 2013), Goss revisits the model created by Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky in their 1988 book, Manufacturing Consent. The filters remain, but Goss pushes the model into the modern context of new media models and expanded global exportation. “Far from condemning journalism,” Goss writes, “I hope to see it more closely approximate its mythologies about itself.” “Rebooting” is an important work, relevant not just to scholars, but all consumers of media.
