The Miskatonic Playhouse presents Part One of ‘The Tartarus Intercept' by Alex Guillotte. We are joined by the wonderful Council of Shoggoths for a game that was streamed live during MRCon 2024. The year is 2181, and humanity has moved out into the solar system to establish mining outposts, colonies, and research stations as far out as Jupiter. The first crewed mission has just arrived in the Tartarus system after spending almost a year and a half traversing the unimaginable void of space to get there. The crew's objectives are simple. Perform a detailed survey of the system and establish possible resource claims on the surface of Nyx. Remember that movie The Blob? The one with the alien blob monster that absorbs and eats people, growing larger after every meal? Sure it might seem schlocky by today's standards, but at the core, it is a genuinely terrifying idea. With that in mind, this week we take a look at a few different sightings of gargantuan underwater blobs that display some rather odd behavior and abilities. Are these giant jellyfish? Shoggoths? Alien blob monsters? Or maybe just made up sea stories. We've got our first guest star in today's episode as we get the nonstop machine of comics crowdfunding Matthew Hardy to join us in talking about the First Lady of Star Trek: Majel Barrett! Majel's been in so many episodes, hell, so many SERIES of Star Trek over the years, so there's a lot to work with here. We've got shockingly little Majel in the TOS episode that ostensibly is a spotlight focus on her. Then we're in to the wild world of Lwaxana Troi as she gets kidnapped by Ferengi in TNG and that version of the Ferengi are the absolute worst. Like Internet Guy worst. Finally we get a surprisingly nice pairing of Lwaxana and Odo stuck in a lift together as a weird life form from the Gamma Quadrant has got into the computers. 20:13 TOS: What Are Little Girls Made of? 48:37 TNG: Ménage a Troi 1:11:18 DS9: The Forsaken Talking points include: Westworld (both flavours), Babylon 5, Only Murders in the Building, Righteous Gemstones, Adam X the X-Treme, Ahsoka, Classic Dr Who, FMV PC games, Charlie's back on his Lost bullshit, From, Amnesiac City, Two time GLAAD award winner Peter Allan David, The Matrix, Terminator, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, The UK Office amount of awkwardness, Shoggoths, Tiny Clangers, The Prisoner, Legion of Super-Heroes fashion, Mario Kart-based declarations of love, Vampire: The Masquerade, The Mos Eisley Cantina Band, Lucille Bluth, Lwaxana Troi going full Mrs Bennet, Picard giving it all Shakespeare, More Classic Dr Who, Lord of the Rings for the SNES, Gilmore Girls, Tamagochi, War of the Worlds. In the immortal words of Creed's Scott Stapp, “can you take me HIIIGHER?”Yes, I can.Our guest this week is Nicholas Binge, author the new buzzy, horror-sci-fi novel, Ascension. It's about a very weird, very big mountain that appears out of nowhere to lure the unwary upwards. Nothing good occurs, of course. Again…much like a Creed concert. This is where the comparison's to terrible post-grunge rock ends (thankfully) cos Nick and I have much more fun making comparisons to the likes of Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker and H.P. Lovecraft… to the classic Gothic and Adventure stories that Nick mixes with his oh-so-modern science-fiction themes. Ascension is a treat for fans of both traditions. We also talk about the place of mountains in our literature, the shattering chaos of quantum mechanics, recontextualising neurodiverse characters and the occasional shoggoth!Enjoy!Ascension was published on April 25th by HarperVoyager and Riverhead Books.Other books mentioned in this episode include:Annihilation (2014), by Jeff VanderMeerThe Lost World (1912), by Arthur Conan DoyleAt the Mountains of Madness (1936), by H.P.

Joining Chris and Alex for this latest episode is Dr. Bambi Haggins, Associate Professor in the Department of Film and Media Studies at UC Irvine whose work explores race, class, gender and sexuality in American comedy across media and television history. She is also the author of Laughing Mad: The Black Comic Persona in Post-Soul America (2007), while her current book project, Still Laughing, Still Black examines how Black comedy, culture and reception in the new millennium reflect, refract and reveal the necessity and the power of Black comic discourse and survival laughter since 2008. Listen as the trio discuss structuring relationships within Lovecraft Country between identity, race and imagination; the stakes of the programme's application and reworking of ‘Lovecraftian' imagery within an oppressive Jim Crow setting; discourses of reconstruction and restoration within both digital VFX post-production work and post-Civil War America; the (re)centring of blackness and the ambivalent power of whiteness as it manifests across the series' performances; the CGI Cthulu creatures (Shoggoths) that are central to the programme's allegorical treatment of Black survival and fear; and how Lovecraft Country uses generic hybridity and the threat of fantasy to engage with a narrative of a racial reckoning.

Are you a fan of noir comics? How about H.P. Lovecraft? Then this is a jam packed episode you won't want to miss! We welcome Patrick McEvoy and Josh Finney of 01Publishing.com to talk about their project, Casefile: ARKHAM Her Blood Runs Cold, currently running on Kickstarter until September 24th. Detective Hank Flynn returns for another case that will lead him into the darkest corners of Lovecraft’s most cursed city—Arkham, Massachusetts. When an old friend shows up at Flynn’s office waving a gun and rambling about “the Abyss of the Shoggoths,” the detective is pulled into a case of love, revenge, and an elite family's generational feud—one which just so happens to involve a cult that has interbred with the spawn of a Sumerian God. Don't miss your chance to back this project! In this week's 'Retro Roundtable', we share our favorite memories and discuss the genius behind 'South Park' as it approaches its 20th anniversary. So come on down to Canned Air and meet some friends of mine! 01Publishing.com Casefilearkham.com @PMacArts @Josh_Finney CannedAirPodcast.com @CannedAirPod

Which Great Old One will rule the ruins of Earth? Now, you take charge! Cthulhu Wars is a fast-moving strategy game about the end of the world. You take part of various monstrous aliens seeking to dominate the world. You can play as Great Cthulhu himself, or you can take charge of the other factions, such as the slither hordes of the Crawling Chaos, or the insane minions of the Yellow Sign. The game has a huge map of Earth to fight over, and 72 high-quality figures, all drawn from the dread Cthulhu Mythos, including Cthulhu himself, Cultists, Shoggoths, and many other horrors. We’ve designed these figures to 28mm scale, compatible with many other tabletop games. Earn and cast spells and summon monsters unique to your own Faction. Each Faction is strikingly different in tactics and techniques. A strategy that works for the Black Goat will be ineffective for the Crawling Chaos. The game is for 2-4 players, and up to 8 with the expansions. Each Faction has multiple unique strategies for winning, so Cthulhu Wars has incredible depth and replay value. Cthulhu Wars is a combination of strategic gaming and Lovecraftian horror, with the bonus of high-quality monster figures to make your game even more fun.

Has anybody drawn a correlation between the worm creatures in "Challenge from Beyond" and the worm-like creature in "Haunter of the Dark"? Both seem to have some sort of relationship to an artifact that activates when stared into. Lovecraft's narration of the history of the Old Ones in "At the Mountains of Madness" seems to parallel his view of the history of the American colonies. The Shoggoths might stand for African slaves, then "unsavory" immigrants, etc. Is this racist subtext really present in "At The Mountains of Madness," or am I, myself, mad? Are you familiar with the Lovecraftian tales of Stephen King ("Jerusalem's Lot," "Crouch End," THE MIST? And what are your thoughts on them? How about Alan Moore's Lovecraftian work? Could you discuss how Lovecraft came to ghostwrite "The Mound" and how much Zealia Bishop contributed to it? I was wondering if you knew of any completed Sci-Fi/Lovecraftian crossover stories, if you have any familiarity with Lovecraftian comics, and if there were any favorites you could share. Are you familiar with the great adaptations of "The Call of Cthulhu" and "The Whisperer in Darkness" by the HP Lovecraft historical society? What do you think of other HPL movie adaptations? Do you think Lovecraft could have done well as a comedy writer? In "At the Mountains of Madness," it is revealed that the Elder Things created the Shoggoths as a slave race. It is also revealed that the Elder Things had a great war with the Deep Ones eons ago. However, in the story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" the Deep Ones are said to have Shoggoths as well. Is there any explanation as to the change of ownership? Did I hear you correctly when you stated on a recent Lovecraft Geek that the protagonist of the "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" was named "Olmstead"? Has it been remarked that this name reminds us of the Olm, the European cave dwelling amphibian that retains gills all its life and is wholly aquatic? Might Robert E. Howard's Conan have been influenced by the barbarian hero Ursus in Henryk Sienkiewicz's 1896 novel "QUO VADIS"?
