Brandon Knight joins us to combine our shows, The Whole Church Podcast, and https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/my-seminary-life/id1558302469 (My Seminary Life) for a special one time event! After Joshua went to https://trippfuller.com/ (Tripp Fuller)'s recent https://homebrewedchristianity.lpages.co/theologybeercamp22/ (conference), he wanted to discuss some of the more liberal theologies that he encountered. We discuss what is the limit between beliefs people can hold and we still consider ourselves in Christian unity with them. We discuss the difference of Christian Unity, Unity and being at peace with others - all things the Bible calls us to do! What is process theology? What is penal substitution? This book is a challenging read primarily because the reader must confront his/her/their feelings on faith, oppressed peoples, and several closely related topics. It is a heady and helpful read, like a guided tour through history and faith, on the theme of a connection between the cross of Jesus Christ and the lynching tree of Black Americans. In this review, we consider every chapter. The Cross and the Lynching Tree in the Black Experience A Reflection on Reinhold Niebuhr Martin Luther King Jr.'s Struggle to Redeem the Soul of America The Recrucified Christ in Black Literary Imagination "Oh, Mary, Don't You Weep" Conclusion: Legacies of the Cross and the Lynching Tree I encourage every thinking reader to purchase and read -- no, savor -- this book. This is not a book to read for an escape. This is the best kind of self-help book, to help us search our hearts in safety and examine our stances on several topics. You can do it... we can do the work of introspection, reflection, and application for growth and positive change. Faith or no faith, racial tensions or not, there's reality in this book for us all and the levels of empathy that can be born from doing the internal work are amazing to consider. In this episode of Critical Reads, we will be discussing The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone. Here's a brief summary of the book courtesy of the author/publisher: "The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful new work, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk. Both the cross and the lynching tree represent the worst in human beings and at the same time a thirst for life that refuses to let the worst determine our final meaning. While the lynching tree symbolized white power and black death, the cross symbolizes divine power and black life God overcoming the power of sin and death. For African Americans, the image of Jesus, hung on a tree to die, powerfully grounded their faith that God was with them, even in the suffering of the lynching era. In a work that spans social history, theology, and cultural studies, Cone explores the message of the spirituals and the power of the blues; the passion and of Emmet Till and the engaged vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.; he invokes the spirits of Billie Holliday and Langston Hughes, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ida B. Well, and the witness of black artists, writers, preachers, and fighters for justice. And he remembers the victims, especially the 5,000 who perished during the lynching period. Through their witness, he contemplates the greatest challenge of any Christian theology to explain how life can be made meaningful in the face of death and injustice." Known as the founder of black liberation theology, Professor James H. Cone was the Bill and Judith Moyers Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary. He was also an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Some of his most well-known works include The Cross and the Lynching Tree (2012), God of the Oppressed (1975), A Black Theology of Liberation (1970), and perhaps what his most groundbreaking work, Black Theology & Black Power (1969). In this week's edition of Learn, Live, Laugh, I invite us to consider two different thoughts: 1) Consider the place of liberation theology in your own life. In what ways could you see Christ advocating for those considered poor and oppressed in our current times? 2) In a likewise manner, consider the ways in which you might see the Church (universal church) suppress and oppress others.

Allowing the natural world to inform our perspective gives us a greater appreciation for it, and new insights into dismantling global warming. They also get into intersecting climate and environmentalism with other social justice issues, understanding how climate change deeply affects impoverished and BIPOC communities, and white supremacy and racism's involvement in the climate crisis. A compelling must-listen interview from two great minds helping to lead us into a more sustainable future. At the terrific suggestion of a listener, the Irenicast crew takes up the Atonement Doctrine for round 2 in Atonement Theology Revisited. The episode begins with each co-host picking up from where we left off in Episode #59 - Why Did Jesus Die? The conversation does not last long before the question of Sin enters the room. Then co-hosts explore how Jesus’ death on the cross fits into the theological categories of Sin and Atonement. The conversation meanders through the lineage of Western Christianity which dealt us the inheritance of a particular understanding of Atonement in which violence becomes sanctified. Co-hosts continue by connecting White Supremacy, Patriarchy, Militarism, and Policing to a neat and tidy, albeit violent, vision of one bloody sacrifice for all. Co-hosts reconstruct the Passion story sans Atonement doctrine before each describing the evolution of their own Atonement Theologies.   The episode closes by bringing back the segment: Sort of Scattergories. A group study of James Cones’ landmark book with a leading African American scholar of Church History. The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. For African Americans, the image of Jesus, hung on a tree to die, powerfully grounded their faith that God was with them, even in the suffering of the lynching era.https://crackersandgrapejuice.com/the-cross-and-the-lynching-tree/

Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary andanalysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-hostGlen Ford. Coming up: The Black Alliance for Peace steps up its campaign to get theU.S. military out of Africa; a scholar takes a look at Kwaito music and young people’spolitics in South Africa; and, a new article celebrates the life and work of James Cone, the father of Black Liberation Theology. But first – the U.S. political establishment is still reeling from the nationwide wave ofdemonstrations that followed the police killing of George Floyd. We spoke with MonifaBandele, a veteran activist from Brooklyn, New York, who sits on the policy table of theMovement for Black Lives. Bandele says the ongoing protests are the result of years oforganizing. The United States military has a larger presence on the African continent than Britainand France at the height of their colonial empires. The Black Alliance for Peace isescalating its campaign against AFRICOM, the U.S. Military Command in Africa, whichis active in almost every nation on the continent. Alliance activist Tunde Osazua pointsout that AFRICOM’s first big mission was the regime change attack on Libya, in 2011. Dr. James Cone, the world-renowned theologian, died two years ago, but his workcontinues to influence Black political thinking. Matt Harris is a PhD candidate at the University of California, at Santa Barbara. Harris co-authored an article titled, "In theHope That They Can Make Their Own Future: James H. Cone and the Third World."Harris says Cone is considered the father of Black liberation theology. In South Africa, “kwaito” music is wildly popular with young people – just as is hip hopamong Black American youth. Xavier Livermon is a professor of African DiasporaStudies at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s spent years studying the kwaito musicphenomenon, and written a book, titled ““Kwaito Bodies: Remastering Space andSubjectivity in Post-Apartheid South Africa.” Professor Livermon says Kwaito music hashad a profound effect on South Afrian youth, whose 21 st century politics is quite differentthan the young people who rose up against white minority rule in Soweto in 1976.

From the back cover: "The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful new work, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk. Both the cross and the lynching tree represent the worst in human beings and at the same time a thirst for life that refuses to let the worst determine our final meaning. Through their witness he contemplates the greatest challenge of any Christian theology to explain how life can be made meaningful in the face of death and injustice."

Our truth series is wrapped up this week with a deeply personal conversation on changing truth.  Everyone on this show, and the vast majority of our listeners, have experienced a truth change.  Many times we refer to that process as deconstruction.  A term that reflects a reality we all share, but that falls short of communicating the depth and heartache involved in the process of changing truth. Bonnie starts the conversation with the question, “What was it like for you to wake up one morning and know you were not operating with the same set of beliefs?”  The answers get personal and lead to an unexpected reminder of the privilege inherent in questioning truth.  Race, gender and sexuality can be a huge catalyst for how traumatic a truth revision can be. As the group continues to share it also becomes apparent that representation in our education into new truths is paramount.  It helps us see ourselves so that we can better see others.  We are not on this journey alone. This episode closes with a round of Famous Christians for 100.  Each host has provided a quote from a ‘famous’ ‘christian’ and the others need to tap their vast knowledge of Christian culture to guess the source.   Conversation on Changing Truth (00:04:23) Famous Christians for 100 Segment (01:08:15) ANTI-RACIST RESOURCE LIST This list is an evolving anti-racist resource list, and consists of material we have found helpful in our journey into anti-racism.  To view the update list please visit Irenicast.com/AntiRacist.  To recommend resources to be added to the list please email us at podcast@irenicast.com. And Katherine’s not only a local pastor, but by golly this is Holy Week — so, we get into what this means when it comes to sitting in discomfort and letting ourselves feel all the things, instead of rushing from the weirdness of Palm Sunday into the colored Easter eggs of Easter. Our conversation on race takes an honest look at the team’s understanding of race as a complex construct that has shaped every aspect of our identities, our relationships and our lives. Raj suggests the topic in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Dr. King called us into uncomfortable spaces to do challenging work in the areas of economic justice, anti militarism, prison reform and racial equity. Additionally Raj shares the observation that “white people” rarely have the opportunity to talk openly about race. The pursuit of racial justice requires engaged participants from all sectors of the racial spectrum to be involved, courageous and vulnerable. The team agrees to step into the uncomfortable space together. Co-hosts Jeff, Allen, Bonnie and Casey respond to Raj’s questions on the definition of race, on racial identity, racial understanding, the linkage between faith formation and racial formation and what role each one has to play in the struggle for racial justice. Then the team gets silly in a new segment “Over/Under.” Avocado Toast, Jerry Seinfeld, Titanic, Grunge. Listen and you’ll understand. This week on StoryWeb: James H. Cone’s book Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare. It has been more than 25 years since I read Rev. James H. Cone’s book Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare. I was teaching an English 101 course focused on the writing of the Civil Rights Movement, and I wanted to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X and to understand better the relationship between them, the intersection points, if any, between them. Of course, I’d already read Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and his landmark “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” and I’d read The Autobiography of Malcolm X. But it was James H. Cone’s 1991 book, Martin & Malcolm & America, that helped me to deeply understand how the two seemingly diametrically opposed civil rights leaders were actually two sides of the same coin. There was so much more to say than that Dr. King preached nonviolence and that Malcolm X advocated violence. Indeed, it was not even accurate to say that Malcolm X “advocated violence.” It was more that he advocated or understood the need for self-defense. Particularly in his softened views after his pilgrimage to Africa and to Mecca, Malcolm X embraced a position of love as much as Dr. King did. Cone’s book tells the full story of Dr. King and the full story of Malcolm X and the story of their evolving relationship with each other’s viewpoints. It helped me to realize fully and deeply the important and crucial role both of these leaders played in the Civil Rights Movement as their messages resonated against each other, as they responded to each other’s critique and moved closer to each other’s ways of thinking. It is far too easy for Americans today to embrace King’s words, to share in his vision of an American dream of racial justice and equality. Americans find King’s words inspiring – but also in many ways palatable, manageable, acceptable. But many of us are still rattled by Malcolm X’s direct, hard-hitting, even harsh ideas, his assessment that blacks were living in a nightmare realized. In his earlier days, he denounced whites as the devil, though in later days he brought more love to his view of white Americans. Still, his words – both pre- and post-Mecca – are raw and unfiltered. They do give African Americans the right to fight back in self-defense. After reading and absorbing Malcolm X’s teachings, it is impossible not to see Frederick Douglass’s fight against the slave breaker Mr. Covey in any other light. He was fighting back in self-defense, just as Malcolm X would have called him to do. He was literally fighting for his life. Rev. James H. Cone, who was a minister during the Civil Rights era, has been a professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City since 1970. Though you might not know his name, rest assured he is a recognized intellectual leader in the fight for justice for African Americans. In a 2008 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Cone explains his theory of “black liberation theology,” which draws inspiration from both Dr. King and Malcolm X, as "mainly a theology that sees God as concerned with the poor and the weak." Dr. King and Malcolm X met only once – and that was quite accidentally when they ran into each other in the halls of the U.S. Capitol building in March 1964. But their lives and philosophies and teachings influenced each other more than most of us know. If you want an excellent introduction to and exploration of the Civil Rights Movement and its two seemingly different leaders, I encourage you to read Martin & Malcolm & America, an outstanding comparative intellectual biography in every way. It changed my thinking and understanding profoundly and fundamentally more than a quarter century ago. Visit thestoryweb.com/cone for links to all these resources and to watch Rev. James H. Cone in conversation with Dr. Cornel West as they discuss West’s book Black Prophetic Fire. West’s book – written in dialogue with and edited by Christa Buschendorf – looks at the work of six revolutionary black leaders: Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ella Baker, Malcolm X, and Ida B. Wells. You’ll also find a photograph of the only time Dr. King and Malcolm X met in person on March 26, 1964.

Someone, somewhere, supposedly said, "it's not the things that we don't know about the past that are the problem. It's the things we know that just aren't so." Engraving is another term for the "things we know that just aren't so." It applies to those ideas that are almost engraved on our brain, that even education doesn't always remove. Perhaps a belief that the Earth gets warmer in the summer because it's getting closer to the Sun; or that heavier objects really do fall faster than lighter objects. Some engravings persist even after taking courses that teach the exact opposite of the engraving. While some claim that it takes years of advanced study to eliminate engravings, I think that may be optimistic. Engravings are powerful things This week Lilian Calles Barger and I discuss liberation theology, a movement arising in the 1960s ... but I'll stop there.  I'm not sure that our conversation replaced the liberation theology engraving I've been carrying around. I have some more reflecting and studying to do about this aspect of the past. Lillian provides a thoughtful introduction, which I hope you'll enjoy! As you reflect on our conversation, I'd be interested to hear about engravings you might carry about this, or other, aspects of the past. The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful new work, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk. In a work that spans social history, theology, and cultural studies, Professor Cone explores the message of the spirituals and the power of the blues; the passion and death of Emmet Till and the engaged vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. He invokes the spirits of Billie Holiday and Langston Hughes, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ida B. Wells, and the witness of black artists, writers, preachers, and fighters for justice. And he remembers the victims, especially the 5,000 who perished during the lynching period. Through their witness he contemplates the greatest challenge of any Christian theology -- to explain how life can be made meaningful in the face of death and injustice.James H. Cone, Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary, is widely regarded as one of the most influential theologians in America. His books include A Black Theology of Liberation, The Spirituals & the Blues, God of the Oppressed, and Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare.  Recorded On: Thursday, March 1, 2012
