Mark D Conklin has done it all - a music executive, artist manager, producer and roots music artist, he's even interviewed the likes of Ellie Goulding and DJ Khaled. So what's next? He's venturing into Gospel music, with the cinematic album The Gospel According to Mark featuring narration by Gloria Gaynor. Which is …you guessed it, a creative retelling of the Biblical book of Mark. He chats to Jess about the incredible artists who partnered with him on this project, his journey back to faith as an adult, and why he believes Christian music needs to reflect the harder parts of the human experience. "Nashville Recording Artist Singer/Songwriter Lee Newton, came from humble beginnings. Having seen her share of hard times growing upa small town in Western North Carolina, she started singing in church when she was five years old when her Mother would take her. Lee's love of music grew as a child when her Daddy played country classics like Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline around the house. Lee's father, a cab driver, taught her to play the guitar at age seven and they would sing together while she rode around town with him in his taxi going on calls. “My Daddy, who named me Brenda Lee after the amazing country singer, would always tell me one day you will be playing at the Grand Ole Opry and from that point on I knew I wanted to be a performer.” Heavily influenced by legendary musicians like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, The Judds Lorrie Morgan Susan Tedischi and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lee's personal sound is a mix between traditional Country and raspy Blues with an added Southern Rock flare. When Lee was 20 years old, she joined a couple of bands and taught herself to play the drums. She travelled to New York City and had the privilege of singing backup for Artimus Pyle, Leslie Hawkins and JoJo Billingsly – three original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 2020, Lee won “Vocalist of the Year” at the Josie Music Awards. Her 2021 EP Undamaged, which she wrote, won “EP Album of the year” at Josie Music Awards and also Top 20 Best of 2021 for Women of Country. Lee's newest full length album UNLEESHED, was released April, 2022. Lee wrote 9 of the songs on it. She won “Album of the year” at the Josie Music Awards show that was held at The Grand Ole Opry. She also was nominated for Song of the year with Carolina, and Artist of the year for Women of Country Best of 2022. UNLEESHED has artist Leona Williams, Pam Tillis, Lee Roy Parnell, Mike Rogers & Tim Watson appear on it. Lee has opened or performed with legends Randy Travis, Ronnie Milsap, Ronnie McDowell, T Graham Brown, Diamond Rio, The Gatlin Brothers, TG Sheppard, Edwin McCain, Leona Williams, Lee Roy Parnell, Rhonda Vincent & more." This week we welcome T Graham Brown! It was one of the most vibrant and exciting time periods in Country Music history – the mid-1980s. A new and exciting crop of talents were springing up all over the place – and T. Graham Brown remembers it like it was yesterday. “I remember Randy Travis and I hit at about the same time,” he recalls. “Our first singles were so close to each other. I'm not sure if it was the same week or not. Brown's initial entry to Country Radio was the sad and soulful “Drowning In Memories.” That Top-40 single helped him to establish himself, and by the winter of 1986, he had warmed up to audiences with the bluesy hit “I Tell It Like It Used To Be.” Other hits quickly followed, with his first self-penned release “Hell And High Water,” which became his first number one song. “I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way Again” and “Don't Go To Strangers” were the next releases, which all became chart-toppers. The soulful vocal stylings of T. Graham Brown were all over the airwaves, as his sophomore release Brilliant Conversationalist added more titles to his arsenal of hits, such as the seductive “The Last Resort,” and “She Couldn't Love Me Anymore.” It was a time period that Brown sums up as something of a blur. “Doing shows, visiting radio stations and promoting our records, kept me out on the road over 300 days a year and that was a lot of traveling! This was when I was on tour with Kenny Rogers, who was the biggest thing going back then. His audiences continued to make him a radio favorite as he continued to amass more hits like “Darlene,” the smash duet “Don't Go Out” with Tanya Tucker, and the regret- filled “If You Could Only See Me Now.” At the same time his singles were climbing the charts, T.'s powerful voice could also be heard on radio and television. His sense of style provided the platform for a successful series of cameos in commercials for international brands such as Coca-Cola, Harrah's Casino, Burger King, and Taco Bell. As the 80s progressed into the next decade, Brown continued to flex his artistic muscle. A well-received concert album enabled him a chance to pay homage to his early influences, like the incomparable Otis Redding, and his hero George Jones, who he teamed up with on several projects, including the CMA Award-winning Vocal Event of the Year release, “I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair.” It was a gripping 1998 release about his battles with alcohol – “Wine Into Water”- which helped him introduce his music to the Christian audiences. In recent years, his first-ever Gospel album, Forever Changed, netted him a Grammy nomination, with the promise of more such music on the way. Now entering his fifth decade as an entertainer, T. Graham Brown's career continues to sail along at a pace that seems to suit him well these days. “I'm having more fun out there now than I ever have had. I'm not out there chasing the hits. I'm just trying to stay out there. We're planning on doing another Gospel record later this year. And, for T. Graham Brown, it's all about a career that he enjoys. He'll tell you with a grin, “I've got a band and a bus, and I'll keep taking the music to the people as long as God lets me. It's what I love to do!” For more information visit his website: TGrahamBrown.com.
You may not recogize the name Bud Logan but he is the name behind some of country music's biggest hits like John Conlee's "Rose Colored Glasses", T Graham Brown's "I Tell It Like I Used To Be" and many many more. Bud was also a bass player for the late Jim Reeves. What a career and what a storyteller. Hope you enjoy Bud Logan with these tales!

I am Steven Phillips with Lake 97.7 WJUL Radio. I do a live talk show every morning from 8-9 eastern time called “The Morning Dish”. I won the 2017 and 2020 best On-Air Personality of the Year for the state of Georgia. Our station is rated #1 five years running and my show is the biggest and at 9 years, the longest running show in the North Georgia and Western North Carolina mountains. With the Nielsen ratings in this year 23,900 out of 88,700 total people listen to us each week. That's amazing, considering how many people listen to satellite or internet radio and don't listen to AM/FM. I have interviewed lots of people in these 9 years. It is more comedy than serious; we like to call it “unfair and unbalanced”.Some of the people that I have interviewed are Mark Farner, Paul Roberts (Sniff “n” the Tears), Tommy Emmanuel, Chuck Leavell, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Paul Teutul Sr, Matt King, Stuart Margolin (Angel Martin on Rockford Files), Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke), Charles Bernstein, Scott Innes (the official voice of Scooby Doo), Markos Papadatos, Josh Morningstar, John Schneider, Barry Corbin, Rodney Justo, Barton Gilliam, Reno Collier, Adam Boyer, T Graham Brown, Jon Reep, Brande Roderick, Georgette Jones, Cindy Wills, Thomas Gabriel, Bo Hopkins, Don McLean, Ronnie Millsap, Kyle Bush, Dean Miller, Gigi Garner, Sonny Sawyer, Whitney Miller, James Gregory, Gary Chapman, Sid Davis, Paul Thorn, who regularly calls into the show and some people we would be ashamed to mention and the list keeps growing. It is a good time with dedicated listeners. You can listen in live every morning at wjulradio.com or listen to past shows on the YouTube Channel “Steven Phillips with The Morning Dish”.

Jody Jackson has the intro today and there is no shortage of great JJ stories. He was a promotions director for Y106 and basically started March Across Georgia. Jody went to school with Donna (along with Julia Roberts) and now every time he calls, the Choates go crazy. He’s on another level of hard work. He lived on the road with T Graham Brown and helped Gov. Deal. Nowadays he’s running the John Jarrard Foundation with Bruce Birch, working with amazing songwriters and giving money to a lot of North Georgia charities. He’s so much fun, a very hard worker and we’re so glad to have his intro today! Donna is not getting a Peloton. Instead, she is staring at trainers and buying (more) kitty litter. Garth Brooks called a press conference this week with country (and general) media across the country. He has announced that he is stepping away from a few Country highlights. On an unrelated note, he’s also opening a new bar. The question is: will Caddy also be removing himself from the ballot for Country’s Entertainer of the Year? Donna talks about how the award is really for those who are pushing Country music forward. The real Country vanguard. So, the jury is still out for Caddy. Donna has always wanted a water feature as part of the Choate household. Caddy has been making some calls and it looks like her wish is going to come true. Sorta. That conversation follows an update on the sprinkle debacle we heard about last show. The show takes a serious note as Caddy and Donna continue their reflection on the passing of Rep. John Lewis. It is clear that those who have stories to tell about the social justice icon have only beautiful stories to tell. The most lucrative deal in sports just came through. Let’s just say that Donna is about to be a Kansas City fan. Caddy has never seen Donna hold a set of clubs. Donna tells Caddy she’s looking at the pro circuit. Where’s the disconnect here? Call the show and let us know. Subscribe to the new shows Hustle and Caddy Wagon so you don’t miss a thing. When you’re done, text caddy about it. 7704646024.
Brown is a country music historian It was during country music's rise in the 80's when T Graham Brown came onto the scene. Brown has recorded 15 studio albums and charted more than 20 singles on the Billboard charts which started with the sad and soulful “Drowning In Memories” which was a Top 40 single that helped him to establish himself. By the winter of 1986, he had warmed up to audiences with the bluesy hit “I Tell It Like It Used To Be.” Other hits quickly followed, with his first self-penned release “Hell And High Water,” which became his first No. 1 song. “I Wish That I Could Hurt That Way Again” and “Don't Go To Strangers” were the next releases, which all became chart-toppers. Brown has become one of the most recognizable voices on TV from singing in advertising campaigns for McDonald's, Disneyland, Almond Joy, Coca Cola, Dodge Truck, Ford, Hardee's and many others including the Taco Bell “Run For The Border” television spots. Brown currently hosts Live Wire on SiriusXM Prime Country where he picks his favorite live tracks from some of his favorite artists and friends, including himself. During the quarantine, Brown conducted a country music history lesson with Buddy Iahn & Matt Bailey as he reflects on the stories that have made his career and beyond. Brown also chats about the passing of his good friend Joe Diffie, who died from COVID-19 shortly before this interview. The interview could be dubbed part one as there are more stories to tell beyond this episode with T Graham Brown. Check out our other Podcasts!
