Unity is a non-denominational Spiritual Community in Central Oregon. Join us each week for some great music, a little bit of silliness, and a lot of inspirational soul food. All are welcome! This week: Dr. Terri Daniel shares, “Making Peace with the End of Life”. Is it comfortable at 16,000 feet? Not really. Is the otherworldly view amazing? Absolutely! Our personal comfort zone is very important – it gives us a place to rest, to recuperate, and to feel safe. At the same time, it can limit us from living the fullest life we are capable of. How do we use our comfort zones for rest and refuge without letting them become a personal prison as well? Should we even bother pushing out of our comfort zones? In this talk, Kevin Kubota will use a recent adventure to Ecuador, the Galapagos, and a climb to 16,000 feet on Cotopaxi volcano to explore the powerful benefits, and potential pitfalls, of toeing the line to our comfort zones. Includes a sharing from Clare Kubota at the end. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ Submit your prayer claims online!: http://bit.ly/prayerclaim Please TXT donations to: (833) 455-1960 or Donate on our website: https://unitycentraloregon.org/donate/ Donate via Paypal: http://bit.ly/donateunitybend More goodness on our website: [www.UnityCentralOregon.org](http://www.unitycentraloregon.org/)

This is a newly favorite mantra that RFK Jr is using on the presidential stump.  The subtext, uttered in the shadow of a pandemic that this guy did what he could to minimize and bypass, carries a lot of American spiritual—or maybe pseudospiritual—baggage.  Digging into what he means and what his demographic hears when he says “There are worse things than dying,” can tell us a lot about the status of Death, Grief and Belief in the American psyche—and even global capitalism—in this volatile time. This episode is a recording of a talk Matthew gave at the 2024 Symposium on Death and Bereavement Studies in January, organized online by Terri Daniel of Portland, OR. Since the beginning of human thought, we've pondered the great metaphysical question,  "What happens when we die?" But now, thanks to modern medical technology, a new question has emerged that has practical, down-to-earth implications...  "What happens when we don't die?" In today's episode, Dr. Karen Wyatt and Dr. Terri Daniel explore an aspect of end-of-life care that is not often discussed, and may even be a bit difficult to listen to.  Because today we're talking about about the horrors of life extension,  and we give some powerful examples of what happens when we're kept alive far past the point when the body is ready to die a natural death.  It's an uncomfortable topic, because it addresses scenarios and outcomes that could  potentially apply to any of us.    RELATED LINKS: . If you identify as “spiritual but not religious,” you are not alone. Do you know there's now an acronym for that?  It's called S.B.N.R., and it's a new buzzword that signals a growing trendIn this audio excerpt from the 2022 Symposium on Death and Bereavement Studies, Dr. Terri Daniel explains what it means to be “Spiritual But Not Religious." As more and more Americans relinquish specific religious identities , the movement has earned its own acronym… SBNR. Along with the designation of SBNR, two additional categories have emerged known as “none” (no particular religious affiliation) and ”done” (no longer affiliated). The rise of “Nones, Dones and SBNRs” (N/D/SBNR) in America's spiritual landscape is a source of heated debate in many theological circles, and as one might expect, opinions are often divided along party lines. Conventional religious communities think it's unacceptable to “cherry pick” spiritual ideas and cobble together a personal theology.  But on the other side of the aisle, progressive thinkers can't imagine relating to the divine any other way. As an example of two vastly different views from noted theologians, Harvard Divinity professor Harvey Cox  observes that “people are drawn more to the experiential than to the doctrinal elements of religion.”[1]  And in stark contrast, UCC minister Rev. Lillian Daniel disdainfully refers to SBNR theology as a “cheap god of self-satisfaction.” [2] Read more here: https://deathgriefandbelief.com/spiritual-but-not-religious/Learn about our CONFERENCE ON DEATH, GRIEF AND BELIEF: http:www.deathgriefandbelief.com

Afterlife TV Interview: Taken from the vault, this interview reveals brilliant insight from my wise-beyond-her-years guest, Terri Daniel, including her discerning understanding of why some souls choose to have a brief lifetime and others choose to experience a challenging lifetime. Terri’s insight comes from her spiritual experience communicating with her son after he lost his ability to speak due to illness and then again after his youthful passing. We cover a lot of ground in this interview about the afterlife that I’ve discussed in other Afterlife TV episodes. It’s wonderful to hear an amiable voice saying it. A few items discussed include: why a child’s death is not lost potential, the conflict between ego and soul, the simple path to spiritual surrender, and Terri Daniel’s comprehension of the shift in consciousness we hear so much about. This is not an episode you want to miss. You might want to take notes during this one. The healing photos in video gifted to us by Melissa Olson. Enjoy the ride! This week we talk with Christopher Kerr MD, medical director of Hospice Buffalo, who is conducting breakthrough research on the dreams and visions of the dying. But instead of dreams, today we’re talking about a nightmare, as the Corona virus spreads through the world, and life as we know it grinds to a halt. Here are some top takeaways from our conversation: How we can help the medical establishment cope with the crisis: Make sure that you and your loved ones have your end-of-life plans in place. If a medically-fragile patient comes into the hospital with a “comfort care only” order, it relieves the staff of the moral dilemma involved in triage decisions, and frees up resources for other patients. Key topics we’re addressing: How do individual citizens prepare for the reality of potential mass deaths?Hospice can help by increasing efforts to educate the public about end-of-life planning.Triage: Who gets a ventilator, and who doesn’t?Length of life vs. quality of life Top quotes from our conversation: Dying is more than a medical equation. It’s the closing of a lifeIn the ER, they’re not going to stop and have a 90-minute conversation about your end-of-life wishes. You’re gonna have plastic down your throat in minutes. If you’re on the hospice side of the fence, you see the end consequences of medical interventions without full regard for harm. Podcast: This week on the show we present a pre-recorded conversation with Terri Daniel. Rev. Terri Daniel, MA, CT, CCTP is a clinical chaplain, certified trauma specialist and end-of-life educator certified in death, dying and bereavement by the Association of Death Education and Counseling. The focus of her work is to assist dying and grieving individuals to discover a more spiritually-spacious understanding of death and beyond. Terri conducts workshops throughout the U.S. to help the dying and the bereaved find healing through meditative, ritual and therapeutic processes that focus on inner transformation rather than external events. Her work is acclaimed by physicians, hospice workers, grief counselors, clergy and the bereaved for its pinpoint clarity on the process of dying and grieving, and its heartfelt depiction of consciousness beyond the physical body. Terri's interest in the journey of the soul through birth and death began at age 12 when she began having mystical visions that sparked a lifelong interest in spirituality. But it wasn't until the death of her 16 year-old son in 2006 that she immersed herself in studying multi-cultural religious traditions and metaphysical practices that help the dying and the living find healing through meditative and ritual processes that open a conduit to other dimensions. Her unique form of "radical mysticism" incorporates elements of Buddhism, Shamanism, ancient pagan practices, gnostic Christianity and other spiritual traditions to break down limiting beliefs about forgiveness, divine judgment and negative experience. Terri is the author of three books on death and the afterlife: A Swan in Heaven: Conversations Between Two Worlds (2007), Embracing Death: A New Look at Grief, Gratitude and God (2010), and Turning the Corner on Grief Street: Loss and Trauma as a Journey to Awakening (2014) She is also the founder of the Afterlife Education Foundation and producer of the annual Afterlife Awareness Conference.
