Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. This week on 'Art is Awesome,' host Emily Wilson chats with Stephanie Robison, a sculptor living in Oakland and the chair of City College of San Francisco's Art Department. The episode delves into Stephanie's background, from growing up in Oregon and being encouraged by a high school counselor to attend college, to falling in love with sculpture, particularly stone. Stephanie discusses her creative process, the resistance she enjoys from materials like marble, and how her grandmother inspired her love for making things. She also shares her experiences with exhibitions and her thoughts on teaching. About Artist Stephanie Robison:Originally from Oregon, Stephanie currently resides in California teaching sculpture and serving as Art Department Chair at the City College of San Francisco. Robison holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Marylhurst University and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Oregon. Her work has been exhibited at Marrow Gallery, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art and Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in California, Robischon Gallery in Denver, Colorado, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Joseph A Cain Memorial Art Gallery and Greater Denton Arts Council in Texas, Yeiser Art Center in Kentucky, Site:Brooklyn Gallery in New York, Foster/White Gallery, Whatcom Museum and Tacoma Art Museum in Washington, and Peter Robertson Gallery in Alberta Canada.Stephanie is represented by Marrow Gallery in San Francisco, California and Foster/White Gallery in Seattle, Washington. Her work can also be found at Robischon Gallery in Denver, Colorado. The sculptures of Stephanie Robison plays with multiple oppositional relationships. Working with industrial fabrics and wood, she creates large-scale installations that examine relationships between culture, nature and the built environment. Her latest series of work combines traditional stone carving and the process of needle felting wool. By merging incongruous materials such as wool and marble, she works to synthesize and fuse: organic and geometric, natural and architectural, handmade and the uniform industrial. Focusing on materiality and color with this new work, Robison creates charming, often humorous or awkward forms referencing aspects of the body, relationships and the environment. Visit Stephanie's Website:  StephanieRobison.comFollow Stephanie on Instagram:  @SquishyStoneFor more about Stephanie's Exhibit, "Incantations for the Average Person" CLICK HERE. --About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. 155. Why Anglers Should Be Concerned About Climate Change with Rick Crawford

We started our climate month by asking listeners if they were voting for the climate this November.  In what may be the most historic election in my lifetime, we need everyone to use their voice and get out to the polls.  I saw a post on Instagram from Protect Our Winters, and the photos said, "Vote like your home mountain is on fire" – swipe a couple of times, "Vote like your backyard is underwater." Their caption stated that 8 million environmental voters didn't show up in 2020, but if we are not standing up for the planet, who will?  We need everyone to get to the polls this year more than ever. It is crunch time for the climate, so let's vote like it. So, to close out our first climate month, we will bring things home and see how climate change impacts activities that we love. That's why I sat down with Rick Crawford this week to learn how climate change affects our favorite fishing spots and how anglers can advocate for cleaner waters and a more stable climate.  Rick is the President of Emerger Strategies, a sustainable business consultancy whose mission is to measure and improve your company's sustainability performance, all while boosting profits. Emerger Strategies assesses the environmental and social impact of your company's operations, products and packaging; and helps your company make the business case for sustainability.  After graduating with an MBA in Sustainable Business from Marylhurst University in 2011, and spending several years in the renewable energy and green building industries, Rick decided to marry his passion for fly fishing and sustainability by launching Emerger Strategies in 2016, and today Emerger Strategies works with companies of all sizes in a variety of industries. Rick is also the host of the award-winning podcast, The Sustainable Angler, and is also the founder of the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance.  Rick was named one of the "fifteen people, places, and ideas forging the South of tomorrow" by Garden & Gun Magazine, has been featured in the Patagonia film DROP, and named one of "Charleston's 50 Most Influential People" by Charleston Business Magazine. Rick proudly serves on the board of The Sustainability Institute and enjoys spending time with his family on the water. "Our country is complicit in so much violence." Sermon by guest preacher Melissa L. Bennett, recorded live at the 10:00am service on Sunday, June 23, 2024.   Melissa Bennett (she/her) comes from Umatilla, Nimiipuu, Sac & Fox, Anishinaabe, Nordic, and Celtic ancestors - all of whom have a plethora of stories to tell. She is a transracial adoptee who grew up on an Oregon onion farm in a region that was once traditional hunting and gathering grounds for the Kalapuya people. She is as connected to the stories of the farms that raised her as she is to the stories of her own people.   Melissa grew up on the storytelling of her great-aunt Annabelle, a librarian named Mrs. Borsberry, and the local creeks, woods, and kittens. She started telling her own stories in the first grade and was writing them by the fifth. For over 25 years Melissa has turned her love of storytelling and storylistening into a spiritual practice. She serves her community as a spiritual care provider and spiritual mentor bearing witness to the stories people share in order to help them see where meaning, belonging, curiosity, and possibility exist in their lives. She shares oral tradition, contemporary literature, spiritual texts, ancestral connection, the archetypal language of tarot, film, music, guided meditation, dreaming, altar building, ceremony, writing, and art as ways to support the healing of her clients through story, world building, and myth making.   Melissa has been cultivating a relationship with the unseen world since she was a small child and decided to make her lifelong spiritual work “official” when she earned a Master of Divinity degree, a graduate certificate in spiritual counseling, and a graduate certificate in theological studies from (what was once) Marylhurst University. Following her education she completed a clinical spiritual care residency in forensic mental health and has since utilized her skills working primarily with underrepresented people in higher education across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.   Melissa's identity as an Indigenous woman, a transracial adoptee, a person with chronic illness, lifelong anxiety and depression, and neurodivergence has shaped her work through a healing justice lens. She is committed to utilizing story as medicine for healing the past, addressing systems of oppression in the present, and imagining equitable futures where all people are safe, free, and thriving. For the past decade Melissa has presented, preached, taught, and facilitated on the intersections of story, spirituality, and social justice.

In this episode, Joe interviews writer, director, and producer of the recent documentary, "The Way of the Psychonaut: Stanislav Grof's Journey of Consciousness," Susan Hess Logeais.  The film, which we streamed and presented a panel for back in October, was co-produced by Stan Grof himself, and tells of his journey from his youth in Nazi-occupied Prague to Esalen to today, with much of Logeais and her theory-affirming life story mixed in. It features interviews with many big names, including Fritjof Capra and Rupert Sheldrake, and full-length interviews can now be found on the film's website; 2 of which are conversations between Grof and legends we've lost recently: Ralph Metzner and Michael Harner. It is Joe's favorite film on Grof and his work. Logeais talks about making the movie and meeting such big names in the field, wonders how differently children might grow up if quantum physics and a respectful agreement with nature were taught in school, discusses cesarian births and the differences they could create in fear or stress response in comparison to kids born traditionally, and talks about the power of breathwork and its enormous influence on psychedelic-assisted therapy. Notable Quotes “When I met Stan and heard him speak and heard what he spoke about- tantric science, mythology, Eastern spiritual traditions, even quantum physics, Shamanic journeywork- there were so many things that he spoke about that I had explored on my own before I met him. And then in the course of making the movie, I realized that he had introduced many of those concepts during his 14 years at Esalen. And so I was resonating with him on a level-- it’s like he was impacting my life before I met him.” On using MDMA with psychedelics: “Perhaps as an introduction to a psychedelic experience, especially for people who are older, it might not be a bad idea. I know the anxiety that I had occasionally when something was going really fast and very deep. But I agree with you in that the depth and that anxiety passes, and it’s in the learning to get past that anxiety that we develop capacity for reflection and to move away from reactivity. So I think maybe for the first trip, just to say, ‘Ok, this is what you’re in for, and next time we’re not going to do this.’” “I just want to say how valuable I think Stan’s contribution is, and how proud I am, or how, I guess, grateful I am to have worked with him in the creation of this film. And I’m so glad that you enjoyed it because I wanted to take his theories, his discoveries, his contributions, and make them accessible and interesting so that people could watch it and come away with an understanding that would hopefully inspire them to then go and do the deep work. And I hope people come to the website and visit the live stream archive page so that they can gain a deeper understanding of all these amazing concepts that Stan participated in sharing during his time at Esalen and his ITA conferences.”  Links Susanhesslogeais.com Thewayofthepsychonaut.com The Way of the Psychonaut facebook Blackfoot Physics: A Journey Into the Native American Worldview, by F. She also acquired a minor in Neuropsychology. Laura has shown in galleries around the world including Ireland, London UK, New York USA, Oregon USA, and Moscow RU. Her paintings have been published in international magazines such as Artmosphere magazine and Bluebee Magazine. Last February, Laura participated in Art Russia 2020 and has since become exclusively represented by an internationally known, Moscow based gallery Exposed, A Space for Art. With her background in fine art and neuropsychology, Laura's artistic development is entwined with her life-long curiosity for phenomenology and the subjective nature of the shared human experience. While her work has evolved over time to cover many mediums, its intent has always been to inspire conversations about the subjective realities created by the human mind. She is most inspired by the study of neuroscience, particularly the small areas of the brain called synaptic clefts. Within these microscopic spaces measuring only 20-40 nanometers across, all experience of reality and communication as we know it is made possible. The works Laura creates are artistic depictions of action potentials (thoughts) traveling from one neuron to the next through the synaptic clefts via a process called neurotransmission. Through these creations, Laura explores how neurotransmission might look within her own mind. Once a piece is presented, the viewer is responsible for generating their own interpretation. This is another form of transmission, which then leads to conversation. The goal of Laura's art is to inspire her viewers to better understand the differences in human perspectives and to strive to see one another's points of views more clearly. She strives to delve into the relativity of the mind in order to illuminate the endless interpretations derived from a single work of art.Support the show (Http://Www.patreon.com/speakforchangepodcast)

Motivated by a desire to share that knowledge, the first conference was produced in 2011. The conference is now in its 9th year and draws attendees from all over the world. It is held in a different U.S. city each year, and in June 2019 it will be held in Salt Lake City, UT. Podcast: This week on the show we present a pre-recorded conversation with Terri Daniel. Rev. Terri Daniel, MA, CT, CCTP is a clinical chaplain, certified trauma specialist and end-of-life educator certified in death, dying and bereavement by the Association of Death Education and Counseling. The focus of her work is to assist dying and grieving individuals to discover a more spiritually-spacious understanding of death and beyond. Terri conducts workshops throughout the U.S. to help the dying and the bereaved find healing through meditative, ritual and therapeutic processes that focus on inner transformation rather than external events. Her work is acclaimed by physicians, hospice workers, grief counselors, clergy and the bereaved for its pinpoint clarity on the process of dying and grieving, and its heartfelt depiction of consciousness beyond the physical body. Terri's interest in the journey of the soul through birth and death began at age 12 when she began having mystical visions that sparked a lifelong interest in spirituality. But it wasn't until the death of her 16 year-old son in 2006 that she immersed herself in studying multi-cultural religious traditions and metaphysical practices that help the dying and the living find healing through meditative and ritual processes that open a conduit to other dimensions. Her unique form of "radical mysticism" incorporates elements of Buddhism, Shamanism, ancient pagan practices, gnostic Christianity and other spiritual traditions to break down limiting beliefs about forgiveness, divine judgment and negative experience. Terri is the author of three books on death and the afterlife: A Swan in Heaven: Conversations Between Two Worlds (2007), Embracing Death: A New Look at Grief, Gratitude and God (2010), and Turning the Corner on Grief Street: Loss and Trauma as a Journey to Awakening (2014) She is also the founder of the Afterlife Education Foundation and producer of the annual Afterlife Awareness Conference. WTF is a Blockchain? You’ve heard about Bitcoin. You might have heard the word ‘blockchain’. But what about Ethereum? In this episode, you’ll get the full explanation of what a blockchain is, how cryptocurrencies have value, and how ‘smart contracts’ are shaping the future of transactions. You will then hear about one company using this technology – CPay – which is using the Ethereum blockchain to make everyday payments simpler, faster, more secure, and also provide community benefit. Simon Love speaks with founder Jon Underwood and lead developer Ryan Casey about this fascinating technology. Listen in to hear why Jon says “Ethereum will either thrive or fade away based on how well it can solve real-world problems with smart contracts" Guests: Jon Underwood, Founder and CEO Jon Underwood is the Founder & CEO of Cloud Currencies, dba cPay. Jon sees money like water, and has studied the way money flows for a long time. cPay started with the question “What if we could dig ‘local trenches’ to make money flow where we wanted it to, transforming scarcity into abundance, and creating a new source of economic strength that could ‘flood’ our local economies, building community health and wealth for everyone?” Jon has a strong interest in Rudolf Steiner’s economic indications, often referred to as Associative Economics, and has started numerous ventures and companies. Jon has ongoing interests in local currencies, local foodsheds, local energy, localizing regional economies, community-wide rewards programs, and exploring new corporate governance and management structures that are better able to support the varied interests of the community of stakeholders. Jon received his BA in Economics from U.C. Berkeley, and his ‘Green’ MBA in Sustainable Business form Marylhurst University. Jon and his wife Carrie live near Reed College, along with their two Weimaraners Henry and Evelyn. Ryan Casey, Lead Developer Ryan Casey is a global expert on the Ethereum blockchain, making him an invaluable asset to cPay. A native of Portland, he began programming in the first grade. Ryan has been building web apps since 2011, and has focused almost exclusively on several open source projects using the Ethereum blockchain. A highly skilled programmer, Ryan is part of a global group working on the infrastructure necessary to build out the Ethereum Blockchain ecosystem, and specializes in smart contracts. Ryan states “cPay helps keep capital in the bioregional economy, which enriches all local market participants, and furthermore redirects money that would have otherwise been lost to transnational corporations into projects that directly impact the local quality of life. If you want to improve the region you live in, invest in it.” Ryan is a programmer with Nexus Development and contributor to Maker DAO, and built our payment App from the ground up. He received his B.S. in Computer Science from George Fox University. In this episode you will learn: What is a blockchain? How blockchains function without a central command What is cryptocurrency and how is value created? The difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains What 'mining' is in the context of blockchains, and how value is created How value can come from proof of work or proof of stake The risks of blockchains, such as the 51% attack? How cryptocurrency differs from cash and credit cards How Ethereum can be used with Smart Contracts Why a fixed supply of cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin) is not essential for value storage Why half of the people on the planet will have SOME money stored in the cloud in 5-10 years How CPay is able to minimize transaction fees and donate to charities of the user's choice Links: Ethereum Website: https://www.ethereum.org/ CPay website: http://www.cpay.us CPay Investment Page (OR Residents ONLY): https://secure.hatchoregon.com/offerings/cpay/ Ethereum Wikipedia Page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethereum Vitalik Buterin's writing: https://github.com/vbuterin/scalability_paper/blob/master/scalability.pdf Ethereum community on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/ Bitcoin community on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/
