Tesla has recently made a significant step in the realm of autonomous driving technology with the release of Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta version 12.1.2. This update, which is now available to a group of non-employee Tesla owners, represents a crucial milestone in the evolution of Tesla's advanced driver-assist system (ADAS). The update is particularly notable for integrating an end-to-end neural network, a shift from the previous reliance on explicit C++ coding. This neural network, trained on a vast collection of video clips, is expected to enhance the system's ability to navigate complex driving scenarios.

It's Tuesday and there is a lot to discuss as Vroom announced the halt of used vehicle sales just as Cox released a new study on the car buyer's journey. We also talk about Tesla's latest full self driving version release that is based on neural nets, not human coders. In a not-so-surprise announcement, online used-vehicle retailer Vroom Inc. announced that it was ceasing e-commerce activities due to financial strains and a focus on liquidity preservation. The company which went public in 2020 made waves with its aggressive Super Bowl ads portraying auto dealers as torturing captors. The company had initially thrived during the pandemic with increased online vehicle shopping however started a consistent decline in profits that never stopped in the last two quarters reporting over $130M in lossesVroom plans to halt online used-vehicle sales, intending to liquidate its current inventory through wholesale channels and stop further vehicle acquisitions.Efforts to raise capital for ongoing operations and extend the vehicle floorplan facility were unsuccessful, leading to this strategic pivot. As part of its restructuring, Vroom will reduce its workforce by 800 employees, amounting to a 90% cut, while maintaining operations at its United Auto Credit Corp. and CarStory units which employ around 800 people. The 2023 Cox Automotive Car Buyer Journey Study has been released and highlights significant improvements in customer satisfaction for both new and used vehicle shopping, crediting shorter buying times as a key factor while drawing attention to a balanced approach of online and instore experiences. In 2023, satisfaction with car buying improved, with 79% of new-vehicle buyers highly satisfied, an all time high and notable rebound from declines in 2021 and 2022.New-car buyers spent around 11 hours and 45 minutes in their purchasing journey, a decrease from previous years, contributing to higher satisfaction While used car buyers spent over 14 hours, a one hour decrease.Notable areas of increased satisfaction include the test drive experience (82%) vehicle pick-up and delivery (79%), and sales team interaction (77%).The average household income of new-vehicle buyers was $115,000, with used-vehicle buyers averaging $96,000. Sticker shock eased a bit in 2023, with 49% of buyers reporting they payed more than expected vs 54% last yearTesla's much-anticipated FSD Beta v12 update is now rolling out to customers, potentially marking a pivotal moment in the company's pursuit of full self-driving capabilities. The v12 update introduces a significant shift, with the vehicle's controls now managed by neural networks rather than traditional, hard coded, programming, a major leap in Tesla's technology. This update replaces over 300,000 lines of explicit C++ code, which moves the entire system towards a more AI-centric approach to control the vehicle.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Ralph spends the entire hour with co-founder of RootsAction.org and executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy, Norman Solomon, to discuss his latest book, “War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine,” which examines how our “military-industrial-media-intelligence complex” conspires to suppress the truth about war.Norman Solomon is co-founder of RootsAction.org and executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy. He is the author of War Made Easy, Made Love, Got War, and his newest book, War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine. The tacit motto of huge media outlets like the New York Times is: Being pro-war means never having to say you're sorry. If a journalist or a media outlet is in favor of the US engaging in war, that is couched as “objective.” If a journalist (such as Phil Donahue on MSNBC) in the leadup to the war even raises questions, serious questions critical of an impending invasion or ongoing US war then that's considered “biased.”Norman SolomonThese wars are treated as though they aren't wars. That they don't exist. That “there's nothing to see here, folks!” Because we say so. We have our own criteria. And part of that is the jingoism and the nationalism and the racism that says if the people at the other end of US firepower don't look like us, are not in a country aligned with us, then we don't think there's really a reason to consider it a major problem. It's only a problem when Americans are dying.Norman SolomonThis was a real sociocide—thousands and thousands of bombs and missiles dropped on Iraq. And here's the New York Times, being fed by one of their reporters Judith Miller total lies about Saddam importing uranium from Niger and Africa and other falsehoods that made page one in the New York Times. What is clearly probably its darkest journalistic chapter… There doesn't seem to be anything learned today. They could just as well do it today against another country.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard1. On Wednesday, The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the online retailer “tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions [for Amazon Prime] without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money,” according to FTC Chair Lina Khan. Khan added “These manipulative tactics harm consumers and law-abiding businesses alike.” According to internal documents “Amazon named [the cancellation] process ‘Iliad,'…refer[ing] to Homer's epic about the long, arduous Trojan War.” More about this lawsuit is available at the Washington Post.2. As the Teamsters continue to negotiate for a better deal with UPS, the membership has voted overwhelmingly to approve a strike. This vote – which passed with 97 percent support – gives the union “maximum leverage to win demands at the bargaining table,” according to the union's statement. The statement goes on to note that the Teamsters represent more than 340,000 UPS package delivery drivers and warehouse logistics workers nationwide. Teamsters president Sean O'Brien added “The strongest leverage our members have is their labor and they are prepared to withhold it to ensure UPS acts accordingly.”3. For the fist time since 2019, the Democratic-controlled Senate Banking committee will hold a “mark-up” session on a bill – a key step toward enacting any legislation. This bill – sponsored by Senators Sherrod Brown, who chairs the committee, and Tim Scott of South Carolina – seeks to claw back excessive compensation from executives at failed banks and penalize them for misconduct. This legislation was almost certainly drafted in response to the failure of Silicon Valley Bank. The draft text of this bill is available at Punchbowl News.4. The American Prospect reports that, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, Tesla's “Full Self Driving” or FSD has led to at least 736 crashes – causing 17 fatalities – since 2021. Mile for mile, Tesla's FSD system is “likely…ten times more dangerous at driving than humans.”5. Leaving aside self-driving, a CBS News report sheds light on new dangers associated with electric vehicles. “Their batteries make the vehicles heavier, offering better protection to the passengers inside, but that extra weight — hundreds to even thousands of pounds — has traffic safety advocates concerned about the potential risk to other drivers.” To give some perspective on how heavy these vehicles are, “GMC's Hummer EV weighs more than 9,000 pounds…more than 3,000 pounds heavier than the GMC's full-size pickup. The Hummer EV's battery alone weighs about the same as a Toyota Corolla.”6. The Washington Post reports that the strike at Insider magazine, the “longest ever [strike] in digital media,” has ended. The new deal raises the minimum salary for Insider staff and prevents any further layoffs this year, along with an immediate 3.5 percent raise upon ratification of the contract. The strikers got a boost in public support when the editor-in-chief was filmed “tearing down fliers bearing his face with the phrase, “Have you seen this millionaire?”' Insider, formerly Business Insider, was acquired by German media conglomerate Axel-Springer in 2015; Axel-Springer's later acquisition of POLITICO was covered in the first edition of the Capitol Hill Citizen.7. Yahoo Finance reports that, in a major reversal, Shell plans to “[pivot] back to oil to win over investors.” The company will forego its goal to reduce oil outputs by 1-2% each year, and its CEO Wael Sawan emphasized that “shift[ing] to low-carbon businesses cannot come at the expense of profits.” No word yet on whether life on planet Earth can come at the expense of corporate profits.8. This month, American troops will begin arriving in Peru, where they will be stationed until the end of the year. These troops, invited by the wildly unpopular Peruvian Congress and unelected president Dina Boluarte, are charged with “preparing Peru's intelligence command for “joint special operations.” The timing of this arrival is notable; while protests against the antidemocratic Peruvian government peaked in February, resulting in 70 deaths, a new rash of protests are planned for July. This from CounterPunch.9. The Catholic News Agency reports that a restaurant in Sacramento, California “had an individual impersonate a priest to encourage employees to confess their “sins” against their employer,” – the catch? He wasn't a priest at all. The Department of Labor called this “among the most shameless” of employee intimidation methods they'd ever seen. In addition to the priest fiasco, investigators said the restaurant “denied overtime pay to employees and illegally paid managers from the employee tip pool….[and] threatened employees with retaliation and immigration-related consequences for cooperating with investigators.” The employer has agreed to pay $70,000 in back wages and $70,000 in damages to 35 employees, as well as $5,000 in civil penalties to the Department of Labor.10. Daniel Ellsberg, the legendary whistleblower who exposed the lies being fed to the American people regarding the Vietnam War via the Pentagon Papers, has passed away. He was 92. Ellsberg, who had been in hospice following a diagnosis of inoperable pancreatic cancer, wrote a final note in March. This note mostly focused on the nuclear peril posed by the war in Ukraine, but the last few lines should be repeated here:“I'm happy to know that millions of people–including all those friends and comrades to whom I address this message!–have the wisdom, the dedication and the moral courage to carry on with these causes, and to work unceasingly for the survival of our planet and its creatures.I'm enormously grateful to have had the privilege of knowing and working with such people, past and present. That's among the most treasured aspects of my very privileged and very lucky life. I want to thank you all for the love and support you have given me in so many ways. Researchers are building robots that can build themselves | Tech Crunch (00:52) MIT researchers are working on a project to develop robots that effectively self-assemble.Team admits this technology is “years away” Work so far has shown positive results At the system's center are voxels, which carry power and data that can be shared between pieces. The pieces form the foundation of the robot by grabbing and attaching additional voxels before moving across the grid for further assembly.Currently working on building stronger connectors to keep the voxels together. States in their paper:“Our approach challenges the convention that larger constructions need larger machines to build them, and could be applied in areas that today either require substantial capital investments for fixed infrastructure or are altogether unfeasible.” The team suggests that using the robots to determine the optimal build could save on a lot of time spent prototyping.“While there has been increasing interest in 3-D-printed houses, today those require printing machinery as large or larger than the house being built. Again, the potential for such structures to instead be assembled by swarms of tiny robots could provide benefits. And the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is also interested in the work for the possibility of building structures for coastal protection against erosion and sea level rise.” A game-changing new hybrid EV battery recharges in only 72 seconds | Interesting Engineering (06:03) Swiss startup Morand, has developed new battery technology that could see electric vehicle (EV) batteries charge in less time than it takes to fill an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle at a gas station. Called eTechnology The new technology, which can charge electric cars in only 72 seconds, is a hybrid system that uses technology from traditional batteries and ultracapacitors.ULTRACAPACITORS deliver quick bursts of energy during peak power demands, then quickly store energy and capture excess power that is otherwise lost. The startup says that, during testing, a prototype of its eTechnology solution was able to recharge at up to 900 A/360 kW:80 percent in just 72 seconds, 98 percent in 120 seconds, and 100 percent in 2.5 minutes. The company also states that Geo Technology performed independent testing. Morand says it has tested its eTechnology prototype over more than 50,000 cycles and claims the technology shows potential for retaining power over far more charge/discharge cycles than a traditional lithium-ion battery. The company is looking to bring the technology to market, no word on the exact date.It will likely be more expensive than lithium-ion battery technology, to begin with. Morand aims to scale production to lower the cost of its potentially game-changing hybrid technology. Amazon makes a new push into health care | The Economist (13:05) Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, highlighted a big opportunity for the company moving forwards.Health care Many tech firms are already diving into this health marketApple tracks wellbeing through the iPhone Microsoft offers cloud-computing services to health firms Alphabet sells wearable devices and is pumping money into biotech research Amazon is taking a different route with Amazon Clinic, an online service operating in 32 states that offers virtual health care for over 20 conditions from acne to allergies.Described as a virtual storefront that connects users with third-party health providers. The launch follows the $3.9bn takeover, announced in July, of One Medical, a primary care provider that offers telehealth services online and runs bricks-and-mortar clinics Neil Linsday, formerly responsible for Prime, has said health care “is high on the list of experiences that need reinvention”. This is the latest move the complement previous moves Amazon has made into this space:2021: Amazon Web Services launched specific cloud services for health care 2020: Launched Halo band, which is a wearable device that monitors the user's health status. 2018: Acquired PillPack, a digital pharmacy that is now part of Amazon Pharmacy Amazon Clinic will accept cash for its services, rather than relying on America's insurance system to recoup costs. The company is betting that primary care will become more digital. Amazon's health push comes with several risks: CVS reportedly outbid Amazon for Signify Health, a large primary-care provider Walgreens increased its stake in Villagemd JPMorgan recently opened primary-care centers of its own Previous track record in healthcare not 100% success (Amazon Care & Haven) Competition: Worst of all regulators Amazon's jump into this industry should have a positive effect. Its experience at keeping customers happy while generating thin margins could improve primary care and force other providers to up their game. MRI reveals never-seen-before spaces in brains of migraine sufferers | New Atlas (19:49) Though they are common and can have severely debilitating effects, the precise cause of migraines remains a mystery. From the web MD, “Doctors aren't totally sure what causes migraine headaches, but they think imbalances in certain brain chemicals may play a role.” A study by researchers at the University of Southern California has shed important new light migraines by leveraging cutting-edge imaging technology to gain a new perspective on structures in the brain.Advanced imaging technology called 7T MRI The research centers on what are known as perivascular spaces, which are gaps around the blood vessels that help clear fluids from the brain. The images of the brain revealed that those spaces were enlarged. Inflammation and abnormalities in the blood-brain barrier can impact their shape and size. The team enlisted five healthy controls, 10 subjects with chronic migraines and 10 subjects with episodic migraines without aura.Without aura means migraines without tingling and visual disturbances. The 7T MRI images compared tiny differences in the participants' brains.“Because 7T MRI is able to create images of the brain with much higher resolution and better quality than other MRI types, it can be used to demonstrate much smaller changes that happen in brain tissue after a migraine,” said study co-author Wilson Xu. Among these changes were cerebral microbleeds, along with enlarged perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale region of the brain, in the migraine sufferers.Centrum Semiovale – a mass consisting of white matter that is on top of the lateral ventricles or corpus collosum found in each of the cerebral hemispheres at the bottom of the cerebral cortex. According to the researchers these “significant changes” of the perivascular spaces have never been reported before. The team hypothesizes that the differences in the perivascular spaces may be indicative of disruption to the glymphatic system, which works with the perivascular spaces to clear waste from the brain.Hope to resolve these mysteries through larger studies on more diverse cohorts, over longer time frames. Xu thinks this could “help us develop new, personalized ways to diagnose and treat migraines.” Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta is now available to all owners in North America | Electrek (26:09) Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta is now available to all owners who ordered the Full Self-Driving package in North America, according to Elon Musk's Twitter announcement:“Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta is now available to anyone in North America who requests it from the car screen, assuming you have bought this option. Congrats to [the] Tesla Autopilot/AI team on achieving a major milestone!” This enables Tesla vehicles to drive autonomously to a destination entered in the car's navigation system. Since the responsibility rests with the driver and not Tesla's system, it is still considered a level-two driver-assist system, despite its name. Twitter user @WholeMarsBlog posted about his experience with FSD:“Guys. I drove all around LA today and yesterday. Used FSD 100% of the time. Had zero takeovers. Recorded all today's drives to Petersen museum, LA auto show, and then back” Reminder the FSD package subscription price:Basic Autopilot to FSD capability - $199.00 per month Enhanced Autopilot to FSD capability - $99.00 per month

Russ Mitchell who covers the rapidly changing global auto industry (with special emphasis on California, including Tesla, electric vehicles, and driverless cars) at The Los Angeles Times once again joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss what is self-driving.The conversation begins with Grayson posing the question to Russ: are we in an electric vehicle bubble?Yes, we are in an EV bubble, but that's part of a greater stock market bubble. – Russ MitchellThe conversation evolves into the electric vehicle charging market and if that market is in a bubble. The conclusion is yes. Staying on the economics theme and price performance of companies and markets, Russ discusses Tesla's current public market valuation.A large portion of the general public believes that a Tesla is a self-driving car due to the vehicle's FSD (Full Self-Driving) feature. This feature has created scenarios that are dangerous and have led to crashes as members of the public are overly confident that their Tesla will drive them home safely. While in fact, a Tesla is not a self-driving car (today).Regulators and politicians are beginning to take notice and ask questions about whether Tesla's FSD system is a self-driving vehicle or if it's a Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) that requires drivers to be fully engaged at all times.California Senate Transportation Committee Chair, Lena Gonzalez recently sent a letter to the CA DMV questing the CA DMV's approval in allowing Tesla to operate vehicles with the FSD (Full Self-Driving) feature enabled on public roads in California. The letter from California State Senator Gonzalez raises the question does the CA DMV even has the legal authority to impose regulations on FSD since it's technically an ADAS system and not a self-driving vehicle. As an example, there have been multiple police reports of Teslas with FSD engaged being involved in crashes and nothing happens from a regulatory standpoint. When Pony AI, which is authorized to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in California, got into a crash on October 28, 2021, the company had its testing permit suspended by the CA DMV.With multiple regulatory bodies vying to regulate autonomous vehicles in California, will passenger AV companies look to follow non-AV businesses by relocating to Texas and Florida? It's possible, but Russ brings up the point that engineering talent is located in the Bay Area.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Russ discuss what the AV industry will look like in California over the next 10 years and what consumers can expect in the market.People shouldn't assume that any car for sale right now can drive itself because it can't. – Russ MitchellRecorded on Monday, December 16, 2021.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
What did Steve D get for his birthday? What does Paul think of the Lion King? And why does Steve W think Corning is a transparent company? Find out in this week's Playing FTSE podcast! This week, we start off with a game from Steve D. Paul and Steve W take random pairs of stocks and try to figure out which has the highest TRAILING EPS. This one's a high scoring one as Paul and Steve W reason, remember, and wildly guess their way through acquisitions, stock splits, and twenty numbers to remember. Some of these are easier than others—see how you get on. More importantly, see how you get on with the Netflix vs. Visa question. “WOW” says Paul… With the game out of the way, it's onto a semiconductor special. We start off with the latest developments in the story concerning Nvidia's attempt to buy ARM Holdings. Led by new antitrust enthusiast Lina Khan, the FTC has sued to stop Nvidia from acquiring ARM on the grounds that it might unfairly stifle competition with other chip manufacturers. Steve W takes baby steps in figuring out exactly what ARM does, Paul thinks about the implications for Nvidia, and Steve D ponders the possibility of a future ARM IPO and the prospects of owning shares if the company appears on the LSE. In contrast to Nvidia, Intel has been lagging somewhat lately. Underperforming shares and a general struggle to innovate has caused the X86 outfit to lose ground to its rivals. But this week, the company announced an intention to spin off self-driving car unit Mobileye—arguably the most promising aspect of the company at the moment. With the intention of improving “visibility” for Mobileye, both in terms of investment and in terms of attracting talent, Intel are letting the company trade separately whilst retaining a controlling interest. Paul runs us through the difference between Intel's Mobileye and Tesla's FSD as the Steves take opposite views on the wisdom of the move from Intel. Who loves it and who hates it? Find out here! Lastly, we have a look at the new ETF from ARK. With their flagship ARK Innovation ETF down 22.6% over the last 12 months against a 29% gain for the S&P 500 (figures correct at the time of writing) ARK have launched a new ETF focused on the most transparent companies. Paul looks through the holdings and investigates how closely the fund is tied to the index it purports to track. Steve W wonders why ARK weren't doing this sooner. And Steve D reflects on the run that ARK have had this year. Support the show: There are many ways to help support the show, liking, commenting and sharing our episodes with friends! Episode 33 is here, and with it we bring you the Russian state anthem for some reason. Our movie this week - The Hunt for Red October. Oh wait, maybe that's why... ANYWAY, we are joined by the diminutive Agent Starling in our recording and talk about Tesla's Full Self Driving (FSD) tech beta that has been rolling out to customers it deems are worthy. More on the chip shortage, this cold weather crap we've got going on in NY, and talk about winter tires. We open up this month's Petrolbox, which included a bunch of Hoonigan-themed merch. And Adam gives us an update on his most recent RS4 and Allroad projects. In Part Two, AJ brings us four rounds of trivia. The first? The word "car" in various languages, while Bruce and Adam try to guess. It goes about as well as you could expect. Then, countries with the most (and least) number of cars per 1000 citizens. Round three, weird driving laws not in the USA. And lastly, the harshest penalties for drunk driving in the world. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brokecarsnobs/message
Today, I discuss the potential legal issue surrounding Tesla's FSD, specifically, whether it can -- or can't -- be transferred to a future Tesla vehicle, especially considering that none of us have received the very thing we paid for.
Topic: The business of mobile apps. Ramin discusses his childhood in Iran, his move to America, his journey from a corporate employee to an independent app developer, what he had to learn and unlearn, the improvement of his quality of life through self-employment, the business models and pricing strategies of mobile apps, his decision to have his app be iPhone only, how he works and decides which features to add to his apps, his relationship with Tesla, and the release of Tesla's FSD (full self-driving) beta.
Today: Tesla's FSD Beta request deployment So picking up where we left off last time, I unpack the five metrics Tesla is using to calculate your “Safety Score” to determine whether you're lucky enough to get access to Tesla's Full Self Driving beta. I also dive into a few questions and concerns, and try to cover as much as ground as possible. Have a listen, and be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen; and don't forget to follow me on all social media @AutonomousHoag and on YouTube, too.
Today: Tesla's FSD Beta request deployment! Tesla's (supposedly) about to finally deploy its infamous Tesla FSD Beta to a wider audience… sort of. Tonight. Maybe. And it's not really a full deployment, rather it's a “Request” button which will enable those of us, like yours truly, who already purchased FSD, to — you guessed it — to “request” FSD Beta. After requesting, Tesla's insurance system will analyze your last seven consecutive days of driving to determine whether you “qualify” for FSD Beta. I unpack the ins and outs of what this all means, whether it's fair — or even legal — and the big elephant in the room question, whether this is a smart thing to do, not to mention, whether it's safe. Have a listen, and be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen; and don't forget to follow me on all social media @AutonomousHoag and on YouTube, too.

After spending a week driving Tesla's FSD V9 software all around Seattle, here are my thoughts. This is V1 of Tesla Vision (no radar), and it already preforms better than V8.2 (vision + radar), additionally, huge improvements have been made to the visualization, and 'Mind of Car' view. Although we are still 1-2 years away (at least, probably) from a truly self-driving car, Tesla's FSD software is already providing huge value, but driving well in most highway/urban situations.
Today: VW's impressive AV plans, Germany's AV regulation, and Tesla's FSD beta v9. All this... right now. VW's AV plans VW has pivoted from being the leader is diesel fuel, to a potential leader in the EV space; and now it's doing the same with its AV initiatives with everything from a software platform to its co-ownership with Ford of Argo.ai. Germany's AV legislation Germany seems poised to pass legislation allowing for driverless Level 4 autonomous vehicle driving on its roads come 2022, provided certain rules are adhered to, including and especially the use of remote backup drivers and assumption of all liability by the operators. Tesla FSD beta 9 Tesla FSD beta 9 is here and I … discuss it. A bit. Sort of.
#tesla #selfdriving #karpathy Tesla is pushing the state-of-the-art in full self-driving, and interestingly, they explicitly switch from having multiple different sensors to a vision-only system. We discuss the highlights of Andrej Karpathy's talk about Tesla's FSD system, how to label petabytes of data, how to sample edge-cases, how to train a neural network that has to work in real-time, and why moving to having only cameras is superior to multi-sensor approaches.
