Robert Longo talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Born in 1953 in Brooklyn, Longo was a key figure in what was called the Pictures generation of artists, which emerged in New York in the late 1970s. After that initial burst of attention he has since met with wide acclaim with his translations of everything from reportage photographs to historic paintings into vast charcoal drawings. By rendering the images in this way, he reinforces the impact of the original sources and yet prompts questions about the meaning and the power structures within and around them. By expanding their scale, he also transforms them. Up close—as we are overwhelmed by the analogue artisanship involved in the drawing—these dramatic images are abstracted. He talks about why he favours the term “collision” over “collage” and reflects on the concern with violence in his work. He discusses being, as he puts it, “an abstract artist working representationally”. He explains the process behind his responses to major works of art by everyone from Jackson Pollock to Rembrandt and Manet, and talks about the influence of Gretchen Bender on his newest Combine pieces. And he details the breadth of inspirations for his 1980s Men in the Cities series, from James Chance, frontman of the Contortions, to Rainer Werner Fassbender's An American Soldier. Plus, he gives insight into studio habits and rituals and answers our usual questions, including, “What is art for?”Robert Longo: Searchers, Thaddaeus Ropac, London, 8 October-20 November; Pace, London, 9 October-9 November; Robert Longo, Albertina Museum, Vienna, until 26 January; Robert Longo: The Acceleration of History, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US, 25 October-23 February 2025.

Alvaro Barrington talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. For Barrington—who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1983, but grew up in Grenada and Brooklyn—painting is the bedrock of a practice that incorporates installation, sculpture and found objects, textiles, the written word and community events. He weaves together broad references, drawing on his personal and cultural background, and hugely diverse influences—particularly from art history, literature, political thought, and music—to create arresting and often exuberant constellations of imagery and materials. He discusses his early interest in the Akira manga, his admiration for artists as diverse as Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons and Johannes Vermeer, the significance of Audre Lorde's essay Poetry is Not a Luxury, and why he feels the hip-hop legend Tupac is the most significant artist of the last 40 years. He gives insight into life in the studio, and reflects on the importance of his move to London from New York in the 2010s. Plus, he answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Alvaro's work will be at the Notting Hill Carnival on 27 and 28 August. In this episode, artist Fay Ray and I have a beautiful and honest conversation about the art world, what it means to be both an artist and a parent, and how designers can better understand and incorporate art into spaces. Fay Ray also reminds us of the challenges of building a life as an artist, and she shares how she has remained devoted to her work over the years.  There's so much here to talk about that we could do a part two to this episode, so stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy this wonderful conversation. Guest Bio Los Angeles-based artist Fay Ray explores the fetishization of objects and the construction of female identity through high-contrast, monochrome photomontages and metallic sculpture. For her three-dimensional works, Fay Ray compiles cast aluminum objects, bored volcanic rocks, wire, chain, and natural materials into suspended sculptural masses. Conflating worlds of worship and desire, the works across mediums borrow from the symbolism and composition of traditional religious relics and the visual language of the occult. Ray's sculptures and collages hint at the presence of a rematerialized body through a mysterious yet systematic organization of abstract form. Fay Ray (b. 1978, Riverside, CA) received her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2002, and her MFA from Columbia University in 2005. She has exhibited at galleries within the US and internationally, including Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles (2016 & 2018); Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris (2016); Louis B James Gallery, New York (2016); JOAN, Los Angeles (2015); Honor Fraser Gallery, Los Angeles (2012); and Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills (2011) and New York (2007), among others. Il nous explique comment il a joué des épaules dans un secteur qui ne l'attendait pas, comment il a trouvé ses premiers artistes par sa force de conviction, et comment chacun d'entre nous peut devenir, à son niveau, un expert de l'art contemporain. today on isotopica  we speak with Thaddaeus Ropac, owner and director of the eponymous european galleries….. we converse and let our toes skim the surface of what is a deep mystery to many contemporary artists….. the art market and the gallery system..   as ever i claim few journalistic skills and actually find myself a little out of my bleak comfort zones, and instead in the dazzling bright lights where high culture meets high commerce…. Ropac, a charming man and one time student of jospeph beuys, displays a rare authenticity, especially in comparison with some of the london galleries of which many of us are so jaded and familiar….In reality a conversation perhaps only just begun, yet i hope you enjoy this little detour thru paris…… also featuring some rare japanese shellac 78 rpm recordings, marcel duchamp, john lennon, yoko ono and of course joseph beuys Jane Fonda and Roger Vadim photographed by *dennis hopper at "ICONS OF THE SIXTIES" ropac gallery pantin 2015* photograph chosen in memory of when isotopica last met hopper and after much laughter, we asked him to adopt us.... unfortunately.... *********
