Aontú's Midwest representative has branded the Deposit Return Scheme an "absolute total failure". The state-wide recycling initiative has drawn much criticism in recent days as new figures have revealed only a fraction of bottles and cans for which deposits were charged have been returned. Upon the introduction of the scheme on February 1st, it was stated that Ireland's 'on-the-go' bottle recycling rate is only 23%. With an estimated 5 million drinks containers consumed each day, a key aim of the scheme is to boost this rate to 90% by 2029. Over 4,000 retailers now have a Deposit Return Scheme machine installed on their premises and the majority of outlets are now charging a deposit of between 15c and 25c on each container. Although Minister Ossian Smyth estimated this would result in €1 million in deposits being returned each day, new figures show over the first 40 days of the scheme, just €1.2 million in deposits have been returned. Aontú's Midwest representative Eric Nelligan believes international best practice not being observed has resulted in a scheme being implemented that isn't "fit-for-purpose". A prominent critical voice in relation to the scheme has been Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway who called for the scheme to be paused prior to its introduction. Addressing Minister Neale Richmond in the Seanad, Senator Conway raised the effect the scheme would have on small businesses and suggested that machines be run by local authorities at designated recycling sites. The Fine Gael Oireachtas member maintains that much like when the smoking ban came in, the new initiative has merit but is encountering teething problems.

BREAK: ESOG STORY 1: Cobb Fire Rescues Two People from Burning Home in Kennesaw Cobb County firefighters successfully rescued two individuals from a house fire on North Hampton Drive. The rescue team found and removed a person from the smoke-filled home, providing immediate medical care in the front yard. The patient was then transferred to a local hospital. Another patient was treated on the scene, and both were reported to be in stable condition. Unfortunately, several cats and dogs perished in the fire, while others survived or remained unaccounted for. The cause of the blaze was not disclosed by Cobb Fire and Emergency Services. STORY 2: ‘A Total Failure': Lawyers Blast Cobb Superior Court Clerk for Backlog The Cobb County Superior Court Clerk's office, led by Connie Taylor, is facing backlash as it is nearly three months behind in filing online court records. Local lawyers are expressing frustration, calling the delays unprecedented for a usually efficient court system. The backlog is causing problems for individuals relying on the online records system for case updates. A Facebook post by Cobb Superior Court Judge Rob Leonard urged those with urgent filings to send them directly to his office. Taylor, who faced controversy last year for profiting off passport fees, has not responded to requests for comment. The backlog affects both civil and criminal cases, impacting due process and causing collateral consequences. Lawyers blame the office's leadership for the issues. STORY 3: Cobb Unemployment Goes Up Slightly but Still Trails Behind Georgia, Atlanta In October 2023, Cobb County, Marietta, and Smyrna maintained lower unemployment rates than the Atlanta or Georgia averages, but the pure number of unemployed individuals increased. Cobb County's unemployment rate was 3.1%, unchanged from the previous month but up from 2.6% a year earlier. The Atlanta area reported a 3.4% unemployment rate in October 2023, higher than the 2.9% in October the previous year. In Marietta, the unemployment rate was 3.2%, slightly up from 3.0% in September 2023. Smyrna also had a 3.2% unemployment rate in October 2023. Emergency loans, available through the Farm Service Agency, can be applied for in these counties, with relief coverage extending to contiguous counties such as Cobb. The loans, capped at $500,000, enable producers to address actual production losses and essential living expenses. The region faces extreme drought conditions, prompting the relief efforts. Rainfall forecasts bring hope, with a 90% chance of rain anticipated over the weekend. Despite recent rains, the area still struggles with a persistent drought situation. STORY 5: Credit Union of Georgia Raises Over $7,500 for The Salvation Army Credit Union of Georgia employees volunteered to ring the bell for The Salvation Army at Kroger in Kennesaw for a week, raising over $3,500. The Salvation Army utilizes these funds to address poverty, addiction, and homelessness, benefitting communities by providing help, hope, and healing to those in need. My teams, my colleagues in leadership, editorial review boards start by thinking I'm crazy. Sometimes they eventually get it, sometimes not. Leadership usually wants to get As all the time. In one health system I worked for, I reported that we completed medication reconciliation in 40% of admissions. (Medication reconciliation is the process of creating the most accurate list possible of all medications a patient is taking — including drug name, dosage, frequency, and route — and comparing that list against the physician's orders to provide correct medications). My 9-year-old grandson reads to me, and I read to him on Zoom. He’s reading me a book about Timmy Failure with a polar bear friend, Total. Their business is the Total Failure Detective Agency. What a hoot! I read Tom Sawyer and now Huckleberry Finn. I counseled my various teams over the years, if we don’t fail several times a week, we’re not pushing the envelope, not doing our jobs. Tightrope walkers, pharmacists, and airplane manufacturers might disagree. Still, for innovators, learners, and leaders, failure as a virtue is a hard sell, really for almost anyone. My teams, my colleagues in leadership, editorial review boards start by thinking I’m crazy. Sometimes they eventually get it, sometimes not. Leadership usually wants to get As all the time. In one health system I worked for, I reported that we completed medication reconciliation in 40% of admissions. (Medication reconciliation is the process of creating the most accurate list possible of all medications a patient is taking — including drug name, dosage, frequency, and route — and comparing that list against the physician’s orders to provide correct medications). Capt. Oscar Rojas is the Commodore of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1 (EODGRU1). Capt. Rojas was raised in Dumas, Texas, and enlisted as a Hospital Corpsman in June 1990. After graduating from Wayland Baptist University in 1996, with a Bachelor’s of Science, he attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, and commissioned as an Ensign in November 1997.After completing Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) in Newport, Rhode Island. Rojas served three SWO tours with USS Peleliu (LHA 5), Special Boat Squadron Two, and USS Whirlwind PC-11. He lateral transferred to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and in January 2002, he attended Basic Diving Officer, Mixed Gas Diving, and Salvage Officer courses in Panama City, Florida, and Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal at Eglin AFB, Florida.Rojas first served with EOD Mobile Unit Eight in Sigonella and led highly specialized EOD teams throughout the USEUCOM and USCENTCOM AORs.In May 2006, Rojas transferred to EOD Mobile Unit FIVE, Apra Harbor, Guam, and served as the Operations Officer. Additionally, he also served as the JSOTF-Philippines EOD Task Unit Commander in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines.In Jan 2008, Rojas transferred to Mobile Diving Salvage Unit ONE (MDSU 1), Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and served as the Executive Officer. During this assignment, Rojas also served as MDSU 1 Liaison Officer to Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific during the de-beaching and salvage operation of Uss Port Royal (CG 73).In November 2010, Rojas reported to Joint Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, NC, and served as the EOD Branch Chief.From August 2013 to April 2015, Rojas served as the Commanding Officer, EOD Mobile Unit FIVE, Apra Harbor, Guam. Due to EODMU 5’s extraordinary accomplishments during this period, Rojas was selected as a finalist for the 2015 Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award. Rojas served as a Deputy Branch Chief for Expeditionary Warfare (OPNAV N95) on the CNO Navy Staff from July 2015 to December 2016.From December 2016 to Jan 2019, Rojas served as the Director, Joint Special Operations Command Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Coordination Cell.Rojas is designated as an EOD Warfare Officer. He has also earned the designation of Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, Deep Sea Dive Officer, Naval Freefall Parachutist, and Surface Warfare Officer. He earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College in October 2010.Rojas is proud to wear two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards, four Navy Unit Commendation Awards, the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation with Operational Distinguishing Device, and the Battle Efficiency Award for service while assigned to joint, EOD, and MDSU commands. We try to address what we feel the “new normal” will look like due to the outbreak from face masks being worn regularly, inflation, working from home, the national debt and the mental changes as well. Ed has been watching The Last Dance, a Netflix docuseries on the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan. He’s enthralled at MJ’s champion mindset. It’s a must see, according the Ed. Hey, it's your cool Aunt Melissa asking you to gather around. I watched something so that I can bring it to you, the families. Props to me, because this wasn't pleasant. I'm not happy about it. This week, I did something for the kids and for the mom and dads who just want to lay on the couch and turn something on for their kids. This week, I watched Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made. This week, I'm coming at you from the streaming service of Disney Plus. We have Disney Plus. We got it the morning it came out. It's actually really good. There's a ton of stuff for my kids to watch. One of the offerings they have is called Out of the Vault and it's the old movies I grew up with like Cinderella. The other day the kids and I sat around the television and watched Swiss Family Robinson. I grew up watching this kind of stuff and it's wonderful to share it with my kids. Kudos to Disney plus. I love what they're doing. They're also creating some original shows. This week they put out an original movie made for the streaming service. It was a Friday night, and we were all at home chilling out. We let the kids pick the movie. It was the newest release of the week called Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made. Show Notes: [03:00] I think, if I'm not mistaken, this movie is about an 11-year-old boy who thinks he is the best detective in town. He runs an agency called Total Failure with his best friend who is an imaginary polar bear. [03:54] All I can say about this movie is parents listen up. If you're feeling sick, and you think you're coming down with something, turn on this movie you'll be out in a second and the kids will love it. [04:08] What kid thinks he's running a detective agency in his closet? Also, he wears a red scarf everywhere. [05:04] Every time this kid's parents asked him a question his answer would be, "mistakes were made." My mistake would be putting the wooden spoon away. [06:06] Why did they name the polar bear Total? [07:02] Now I know why they wouldn't let Kyle Bornheimer talk in a Marriage Story. [07:51] After the movie was over David said, "I hated that kid." [08:28] He didn't have a good personality. [08:39] The movie is clean and family-friendly. The kids liked it. [08:59] Rocco thought it was cool because it showed that kids have imaginations.
