Inside the Bullseye
Will we run out of food? The impact the conflict in Ukraine has on our food supply Ep. 31

Inside the Bullseye

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2022 37:00

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the impacts could be felt all around the world almost immediately at the pump, at the grocery store checkout, and by farmers who were trying to get the supplies they need for their spring planting season. "While we're all feeling the pinch at the grocery store, please know farmers aren't getting rich as a result of it," says Veronica Nigh, a senior economist for American Farm Bureau Federation. Then who is? What's driving the prices? With the conflict still unfolding in Ukraine, what happens now that more than $27 billion in agricultural exports from Ukraine alone will be taken out of circulation? That's not even factoring in Russia and it's exports - including food & energy. Does this mean we will we run out of food if we continue to drain our world food supply? Nigh helps to answer ALL these questions and the fear many farmers have as they look to the end of the year in this 30 min. conversation. Will we run out food? While it may be a while before this is a concern in the U.S. (thanks to our farmers efficiently producing high yielding crops and exporting a lot of the excess to help feed other countries), the reality is it's more pressing at the moment for other areas of the world (she explains who could suffer the worst). Also, this could become a bigger concern for the U.S. pending the timeline of this conflict as U.S. farmers rely on my products from Ukraine and Russia including fertilizers. That means if farmers can't get the products they need, this will have a direct impact on prices and availability to our favorite items. . . Nigh wrote an article titled Ukraine, Russia, Volatile Ag Markets. It dives a bit deeper into some of the topics we discuss in this episode. Also in this episode, we reference the crop calendar for Ukraine – you can get a look at it HERE. . . This is an awful humanitarian crisis that has left many of us wanting to help. Inside the Bullseye Host, Amy Pflugshaupt is a former journalist who wants to caution you to be careful who you donate to as there are many out there that use situations like this to unfairly take advantage of those that want to help. So please - do your research before donating. Inside the Bullseye is made possible by ABS Global. Olga Zubashko shares her story around her identity of being both Ukranian and American, the emotional impact the Russo-Ukrainian war has had on her and her community since 2014, and action steps that we can take no matter what causes or issues we are passionate about to support people in Ukraine"   After our recording, I realized that subconsciously I've apparently learned to add "The" in front of Ukraine and that there is actually a history of oppression tied to that. Be A Helper Craftalong 2 weeks to go – please note Ukrainian charities do not need goods or handmade items from the USA.  It takes too much effort and cost to ship them to Ukraine.  If you can, please donate instead to vetted charities.  There are several with boots on the ground such as World Central Kitchen, Save the Children, Doctors Without B orders, Ukrainian Red Cross, Nova Ukraine. 6th Be A Helper Craft-a-long has begun! We keep the rules simple. Anything you make for any charity counts, doesn't have to be knit/crochet/woven or spun. ANYthing you make for ANY charity. One FO per submission Donating blood counts too! Contest ends when I wake up March 15 and close the form/thread. Wips are always welcome Partial FOs count, for example if you make a blanket strip and your local yarn shop sews them together to make full blankets, count your blanket strip. One change this year – due to ongoing accessibility issues on Ravelry, I'll hold this event both on and off Ravelry.  Last year we just used a  Google Form and that was hard for some folks, so this year there will be a chat thread and an FO thread on Rav, and for non-Rav users I'll have a google form where you can link to your IG/FB/Twitter post showing your FO. This podcast is only temporary

This week's episode is about writing a different kind of love song, because your own story is not like anyone else's. Making it real. Andy discusses Leonard Cohen, Janice Long, metaphors, similes, and admits how annoying it is when he talks over the music. Andy has gone into the original master recordings of Not so Far Away and you'll hear a mellotron, guitar lines, and a glockenspiel you haven't heard before. Did you spot the Marvin Gaye line on the finished album? The older songs he mentions are Vision of You and You and Your Blue Skies."If you're looking for something, it's maybe closer than you think it is."You can find the released version of Not so Far Away and stream, download or order Andy's new album 'This garden is only temporary' on Bandcamp, where all proceeds from Fire Engines, Blue Trains and Trucks, and the album it comes from, Time is a Buffalo, will go to the Ukrainian Red Cross. Please subscribe and share, thanks for your support!

The waitperson where I had breakfast this morning broke down in tears over Ukraine. “I just don't know what to do,” she said. She's not alone. I feel the same way. You probably do, too. That one tyrant can cause this much human suffering defies whatever progress we assumed civilization had made since Hitler's rise almost a century ago. That Putin can wreak such havoc on innocent people, seemingly unconstrained by others in Russia's government, makes a mockery of modern ideas about governance in even totalitarian regimes. That he has control over a nuclear stockpile capable of annihilating much of humanity lays bare — even more starkly than does climate change — how far humanity has fallen behind in the primal race between technology and survival. But bear in mind several encouraging things. The rich nations of the world that still practice democracy are exercising a unity of resolve not seen in decades. Thankfully as well, we in the United States have as president a person who is sane, thoughtful, experienced, and even-tempered. Can you imagine where we'd be with the former guy? Beyond this, there is no reason to suppose that the grim calculus behind “mutually-assured destruction,” which has so far prevented a nuclear holocaust, has changed. Finally, by all accounts Putin is not having an easy time of it. The people of Ukraine are mounting a fierce resistance. He cannot “win” this war. Even if he establishes a puppet government there, the resistance will continue. So what can you do to help Ukraine? Four things. 1. First, you can contribute to Ukrainian relief efforts. Here are organizations I trust: — Ukraine Crisis Fund. The international humanitarian group is providing food, water and other items to families fleeing violence in Ukraine. Contribute here.— Doctors without Borders. Staffers with the medical relief organization remain in Ukraine and are "seeking ways to respond to the medical and humanitarian needs as the conflict evolves." Offer support here.— ICRC. The Swiss-based organization is supporting the work of the Ukrainian Red Cross in helping those impacted by the war. Donate to the ICRC.— Keep Ukraine's Media Going is a GoFundMe campaign for journalists around Ukraine that also aims to help reporters relocate and continue their work from neighboring countries. Donations can be made here. 2. Second, you can write your members of Congress expressing your view that the United States should sanction Russian oil and gas, and that you are willing to make the financial sacrifice of higher prices at gas pumps and for home heating oil that will almost certainly result. 3. Third, you can urge your members of Congress to open wide America's borders to Ukrainians fleeing Putin's war, and help them transport themselves and their families here. 4. Fourth and finally, whatever your political persuasion, you can put aside your anger and frustration with Americans who disagree with you on other issues and recognize our shared commitment to democracy and human rights and our mutual loathing for the murderous rampage we are witnessing in Ukraine. Even former VP Mike Pence declared last night that “there is no room in this party for apologists for Putin” (drawing another contrast with the Trump wing of the GOP). Bearing witness to this calamity and unambiguously condemning it should, at the very least, be something we can all agree on. This is a public episode. It feels weird reporting on video games in a time of global crisis. Being yet another voice talking about video games feels so inconsequential in the vast digital ether of the internet when there are real things happening. Yet, seeing the responses from local Ukrainian game developers in the face of danger changed my tune a bit. Games matter, but the people that make them matter more. The responses from the wider gaming community supporting relief efforts shows how games can bring people together to support a cause in even the darkest of times.
