It's the start of a new series, For The Love of Wonderful You! Spring is arriving and as the winter slumber fades away, many of us are likely plunging into a frantic pace of commitments and To Do lists. But we want to take a minute (or approximately 45-mins to an hour) to create a moment where we can punch the brakes a little. Let's tell that inner taskmaster to relax; and instead, reflect on finding value in who we are in this moment, and how worthy we are just as we are. Jen's amazing conversation partner today is Amanda Doyle. Amanda is many amazing things but you may know her first and foremost as “Sister” on the We Can Do Hard Things Podcast with Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach. She's also part of the leadership team at Together Rising, the amazing non-profit that has raised over $50 million dollars and given it away to people all over the world who need it most. Amanda has been a longtime social justice advocate and she uses that knowledge to break down deep truths and complex social issues in all her conversations. Today, she reminds us that spending the energy to stay vulnerable in our relationships will always pay out. In this episode Jen and Amanda talk about: The struggle to be vulnerable and truly open up versus managing perceptions and staying in control in relationships How Amanda chose sobriety and the surprising clarity that emerged in her marriage, especially during the pandemic Jen's journey to understanding herself and her avoidant tendencies in the aftermath of her divorce The profound impact of the "love letter" exercise guided by Liz Gilbert, where “Love's voice” urged Amanda to stop keeping score in life * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “A relationship has to have some equilibrium. The farther you go this way, the more the other person has to go the other way. What I have learned is that no one wants to be in those places.” - Amanda Doyle "What I have recently realized is that many people who either view themselves or are viewed in their relationships as control freaks; actually what they want the most is to not be in control of everything. They feel like they have to be in control of everything, because that is the way that they show their love is by taking care of things. But what they want more than anything else is for someone to step up and be like, 'I got this, I got you. You don't have to be in control of this.'" - Amanda Doyle “You are so fixated on the score of this life, but there is no score except the one in your head. You are exhausting yourself to death, trying to keep a score and figure out where you've won, and figure out where other people have disappointed you and slighted you and not met your expectations. But the score is fiction. We're not being scored." - Amanda Doyle “We think when we're giving up alcohol, we're giving up fun. And that's with good reason. It's like fully marketed--growing up, it's part of the narrative; anything that is fun also includes alcohol. But then I had the enormous blessing of being so close to Abby and Glennon's life and seeing that they were the most fun people with the most delightful, satisfying lives of anyone else I know. And none of that included alcohol." - Amanda Doyle Resources Mentioned in This Episode: We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle For the Love Podcast Episode ft. The recent tragic violence in Israel and Gaza has been and continues to be so sad, scary, and upsetting. In the face of such horrific events, it's often extremely difficult to find an authentic sense of peace and equanimity within ourselves. On this episode, I share 8 specific things we can do to stay peaceful inside when things aren't peaceful around us - in the world, in our communities, in our organizations, or in our families. Being able to stay genuinely grounded and calm, especially when things seem overwhelming, allows us to more effectively address what's going on and to take care of ourselves and those around us when it matters most. About Jessica I'm a writer. I write poetry as well as creative non-fiction, essays that examine aspects of my life or the world around me and try to find the deeper meaning and connection in what I observe. I also write about media and culture, faith, and the intersection of the two. I wrote a sort of sermon once and it went viral. I write for places like Sojourners, Think Christian, The Good Men Project, the Madeleine L'Engle Blog, Our Bible App, and Together Rising. I'm an author. I have three published books and am working on my fourth. The Long Night, Readings and Stories to Help You Through Depression came out on May 19th, 2020 through Broadleaf Books, and its companion book, Blessings for the Long Night: Poems and Meditations to Help You through Depression will be out on April 19th, 2022, also through Broadleaf Books. In between those I self-published the “peace poems” I'd been writing into Twitter every evening for a year as 365 Days of Peace: Benedictions to End Your Day in Gentleness and Hope. I also created a journal to go with 365 Days of Peace. I'm a theologian. I have a BA in World Religions and a Master of Divinity in Christianity. I've traveled to Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, and Europe to study Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. I did part time ministry for many years — leading worship, teaching the Bible, leading discussion groups, working with teens, and teaching English as a second language. After I graduated I went to work for a campus ministry, doing interfaith outreach, but burnt out after a year and a half of fundraising and training. I try to use my education and experience in my writing, both to deepen my perspective and to minister to my readers. I'm an editor. In my editing work I help scholars from all over the world who are working on academic dissertations. I've also edited books, journal articles, newsletters, cover letters, and more. Find out more here. I'm a workshop leader. I've developed and teach the Finding Your Voice Writing Workshops for aspiring writers who struggle with depression or other mental illness. https://jessicakantrowitz.com

Amy Conway-Hatcher is a mother, daughter, wife, sister and middle child, attorney and a former Federal prosecutor. After 6 years as a prosecutor, Amy moved to private practice eventually becoming an equity partner in one of several firms that make up what is known as ‘Big Law'. These large legal entities with sometimes thousands of lawyers and offices in countries all over the world. She was often one of the ‘only', or certainly very few women who had attained her level of compensation and respect. She was and is a woman that others looked up to and aspired to be. You were a warrior career mom. And she never let them see her sweat. But, it seemed no matter how many hours, how many clients, how many extras she undertook to make it to each successive level of achievement, there was an acknowledged and apparently insurmountable imbalance between her and her male counterparts – both at the board table and the kitchen table. She changed firms a few times to bridge the compensation gap but the rules were simply different for women. The compensation, the opportunities, as well as the expectation of complicity when it came to boorish behavior, and the appearance of diversity and inclusion. And the pace never let up - for years. Her children were becoming teenagers, her parents were having health issues and so was she. In the end, she did the unthinkable. She handed in her resignation on International Women's Day, in 2021. She left the career that had been her whole life. Since then there have been numerous articles written about the ‘Great Resignation'. One article in particular compelled her to speak and write about her experiences, which resulted in her wonderful book: Infinitely More: Choosing Freedom, A Career Mom's Turning Point. Amy is paying it forward. All proceeds of Infinitely More will be donated to non-profits that support women and girls, including the Girl Up (UN Foundation), Together Rising, Women's Bar Association Foundation of the District of Columbia, and YoungLeaders.World. When something terrible in the world happens that isn't directly happening to us, we have a choice. We can look away, deciding it's too much pain to take in and feel. Or, we can keep looking, deciding to let the pain of the world pierce our hearts and let it be a call to action. If you're someone for whom taking in the pain makes it too much for you to get through your days with at least some moments of peace, you must find the middle way. The middle way means avoiding the extremes in life. Life is always going to be full of polarities. Contrast and complement are crucial to living. No light without dark. No joy without pain. We must practice the middle way if we're going to make it through this world; our horrible, gorgeous, profane, sacred, fucked up, perfect world. We can't look away. But we can't let the looking destroy us. In this episode, Jessica talks about ways that we can strike this balance, including choosing wisely how you get your information and how to get curious about what other food you're giving your head. She includes resources to help and reminds you that even the smallest donation still makes a difference toward alleviating suffering. She shares some things you can do to feel less helpless, hopeless, and immobilized. And also includes her belief that taking breaks can be a part of essential boundary setting; that it can refresh you and helps you to get back into the world with more generosity. This week, I'm kicking off Season 8 with Glennon Doyle! Glennon is a New York Times Bestselling author, an activist and thought leader, and is the founder and president of Together Rising, an all-women led nonprofit organization that has revolutionized grassroots philanthropy – raising over $25 Million for women, families, and children in crisis. In this conversation, we talk about Glennon's new book Untamed (it's ESSENTIAL READING y'all!), and cover the following: doubt, faith, what's required before you can really take care of yourself, how to consider what the most true and beautiful version of your life is, why permission to change your own mind is critical, and how you can find your own "there she is" moment. What Glennon Said: "May our dreams become our plans." "Faith is a belief in the unseen order of things." "It's impossible to take care of yourself and your family if you don't first untame." "There is no construction of the new without destruction of the old." "The goal of family is to create a community where everybody gets to bring their full self to the table." "Truth is kindness even if it makes people uncomfortable." Listen to Learn: 08:09 - Living the truest most beautiful life (and how this is available to everyone) 14:38 - Believing in the unseen order of things and how to hold onto that faith when things feel rocky 18:29 - How Glennon deals with doubt (yes! She has it too!) 22:46 - Permission to change your mind and why it's a hard thing to think about 27:50 - Living an 'untamed' life (The cheetah story) and how we're thinking of our goals all wrong 36:47 - Overcoming the fear of rocking the boat 46:39 - How Truth-Telling the truth is kindness 54:14 - Finding that 'there she is' moment (and how it might be different from what you think!) I can't tell you how excited I was to have this conversation. When I first started Motherkind, I wrote out a list of dream guests and today's guest was right at the very top of that list. This week, we welcome the incredible Glennon Doyle to the podcast. If you don't already know Glennon, she is the author of two New York Times bestsellers, her latest book, ‘Untamed', which this conversation focuses on and ‘Love Warrior', which was also named as an Oprah's Book Club choice. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy. Glennon is also the founder of a charity called ‘Together Rising', an all-woman led non-profit organisation that has revolutionised grassroots philanthropy. Glennon has raised over $25 million for women, families and children in crisis. She's also doing some amazing work to support families who find themselves in difficulty through this period of coronavirus. We had a really honest conversation – I definitely shared some things with Glennon which I haven't shared with anyone else before, apart from perhaps my therapist! What I took away from this conversation is that your mission as a parent is to live a life true to yourself. When we can break free from the training and conditioning that so many of us have had and then model that to our children, we can show them what a life well-lived really looks like. I hope you enjoy the episode. As always, the conversation continues over on Instagram, so do come and share with us there. For the full show notes, please head over to www.motherkind.co
Strap yourselves in! In this episode, I talk to my dear friend and sister Cheetah, Glennon Doyle — author of the New York Times #1 bestseller Untamed and the founder of Together Rising, an all-women-led nonprofit organization that has revolutionized grassroots philanthropy, raising over $25 million for women, families, and children in crisis. This is an honest conversation about walking away from the lifelong training that keeps us small, quiet, and afraid and embracing our wild, brave hearts. Learn more about your ad choices.
