In this episode, I respond to a question from Lujaina in Texas about what to do when you've clearly communicated that you won't participate in court proceedings—only to be served a subpoena anyway. I walk through how to handle the ethical, professional, and relational implications when parents agree to your boundaries and then later involve you in legal matters. I also share strategies to minimize these scenarios, including how to write clear informed consent policies, communicate expectations confidently, and navigate interactions with attorneys. If you've ever felt blindsided or betrayed in a contentious custody case, this episode will help you feel more prepared, more protected, and more aligned with your CCPT role and scope. In this episode of the CCPT Purism series, I talk about a critical but often overlooked common drift points that shift us from pure CCPT practice. These are small, often unconscious shifts we make in session—like redirecting, interpreting play, or using reflective questions—that quietly pull us out of full CCPT adherence. I explore common causes of drift, including anxiety, pressure for outcomes, prior training in other modalities, and the instinct to be helpful. I also walk through real examples of what these drifts look like in session and why they matter—because every drift adds adult control and takes ownership away from the child. When we drift, we undermine the very conditions that make CCPT effective. This episode is a challenge to bring intentionality, self-awareness, and recalibration into your sessions so you can remain fully aligned with the purity of the model. In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I dive into a mini lightning round, answering five questions from three different listeners. Before getting into the Q&A, I share a heartwarming email from Tammy in Ireland, who recounts her early experiences with child-centered play therapy (CCPT) and the amazing progress she witnessed in a young client. For our lightning round, I address the following questions: • Gabby from South Africa asks about the importance of parental support in CCPT, especially when working with children from challenging backgrounds. • Texie from Michigan poses three questions: 1. How to manage suicidal ideation in young children within CCPT 2. Dealing with very young kids who don't want to stay in the playroom 3. The impact of CCPT on children with prenatal substance exposure • Stephanie from Massachusetts inquires about my thoughts on ADHD diagnosis and treatment in children, including the validity of the diagnosis and medication use. Throughout the episode, I share my professional insights, experiences, and opinions on these topics, emphasizing the importance of understanding children's behaviors in context and advocating for their best interests. I also touch on the overdiagnosis and overmedication of ADHD, offering my perspective on alternative approaches through CCPT. In preparation for a summer filled with fun and exciting summer camp opportunities, I am welcoming Cherie Benjoseph, LCSW on The Heartful Parent Podcast today. Cherie has worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 30 years in various school settings. Currently she works at the Director of National Outreach and Education for the Center for Child Counseling. In 2009, Cherie founded the KidSafe Foundation, a non-profit with a focus on child sexual abuse primary prevention. KidSafe has many programs for parents and educators, but today we are talking about CampSafe which is geared towards providing strong foundational knowledge of child sexual abuse prevention and awareness within a day camp or overnight camp setting. Cherie shares with us two imperative conversations parents or caregivers need to have if you are sending your child to camp this summer. First are the questions you must ask the director of your child's camp in order as part of the process of researching and vetting the camp you choose for your child. And second are the conversations to have with your kids, starting way in advance, so they know what to expect, what healthy boundaries might look like, and what options they have for protecting themselves and who to go to if something feels off. Cherie and I share an absolute love for camp, and the experiences it can bring to our children's lives. But it is our job to project all the children! So Cherie encourages us to not only have these tough conversations with the directors of the camps and help our kids feel prepared, but also make it the norm that camps participate in a program like CampSafe as part of their own process to keep kids safe at their camps. Find out more about CampSafe, and the other programs offered by the KidSafe Foundation at their website: kidsafefoundation.org and connect with Cherie and the work she does for the Center for Child Counseling at centerforchildcounseling.org. Note: I offer resources and support for child safety with Savvy Parents Safe Kids as part of The Heartful Parent Collective. Sign up to get resources from me delivered right to your inbox! It can be difficult to understand the differences between a shy child, an introverted child, and a socially anxious child especially when those things overlap. In this week's episode we look at ways to determine whether a child's reluctance to be social is their natural way of functioning or if it might be cause for concern.

So I'm squishing all of these questions together into one to talk about the things that get in the way of child anxiety treatment.

Candy shares how SE® makes going to work as a therapist joyful and provides hope by helping clients connect to their body and brain, taking away the shame of their mental health issues. SE® is a human experience really feeling the nervous system, slowly, while learning to sit with the uncomfortable by focussing and imagining play. There are misconceptions from individuals who have not experienced SE®, but it taps into something that creates a new experience which alleviates the client.

We have all been through breakups but few of us have the courage to come on a podcast just a month after a major breakup. Teacher and child psychologist Amanda Kline is such a bold and brave person. She comes on the show to share her very raw experience of being left by her fiance just months before the wedding. She even talks about receiving her wedding dress in the mail after the breakup. Ouch for sure. But most importantly, she discusses the importance and challenge of having hard conversations to keep a relationship moving in the right direction. Tim wraps up this first year of Navigate talking to Dr. Sam Huddleston about cultivating honor in the places we live and serve as leaders. While there are many components to healthy culture, honor is certainly an important one which often gets neglected in the rush to get things done. Discover how cultivating a culture of honor can transform your relationships and create an atmosphere where ministry can flourish.Bio:Dr. Samuel Huddleston, Assistant Superintendent of the Northern California and Nevada District Assemblies of God assists in giving oversight to over 430 churches. He also served as the founding pastor of Lighthouse Covenant Fellowship in Benicia, California from 1993 to 2004, a church that was started in his living room. He served as the lead Pastor for 11 ½ years until he was elected to his present position. Graduating in 1980 from Bethany College in Santa Cruz, CA, Samuel and his wife Linda moved to San Rafael, California, where he attended Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Sensing a call to youth ministry, Samuel accepted a position at Church on the Hill in Vallejo, California, where he served from 1981 to 1988 under Pastor Terry Inman. While there, Pastor Inman encouraged Samuel further his education, and he subsequently enrolled at Azusa Pacific University, eventually earning his Masters Degree in Marriage Family and Child Counseling. That educational experience also helped Samuel to finally understand his troubled childhood and what had driven him, years earlier as a reckless teenager, to be involved in a crime that had cost him five years of his life in prison. While incarcerated, Samuel surrendered his life to Christ and learned about God’s unconditional love. His autobiography, Five Years to Life, has inspired people across America and throughout the world, giving them hope for a new beginning. Samuel has shared his testimony with thousands – including, government officials, businessmen, colleges, high schools, and prison inmates – reminding them not only with words but also with his very presence, that God has the power to put broken lives and broken relationships back together again. Before entering the pastorate in Benicia, Samuel was appointed Executive Director of Match Two Prisoner Outreach, at the time was the largest and most successful prison visitation program in the nation, which matches adult inmates and wards (youth) with outside volunteer visitors. Serving from 1988 to 1994, Samuel Huddleston remains the only former prisoner to ever lead a California Department of Corrections program. For 2 ½ years after M-2, during the time he was pastoring Samuel returned to his alma mater to serve as Dean of Students at Bethany University under Dr. Everett Wilson. It was while serving under Dr. Wilson that Samuel decided to continue his education at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In May 2006 Samuel received his Doctorate of Ministry degree from Regent, with his wife of 30 years, parents, children, and grandbabies in attendance. Samuel and Linda reside in Rancho Cordova, CA near their three children: Royce, Andre, and Ericka. They have thirteen grandchildren.Resources:Five Years to Life, by Dr. Samuel Huddleston, Available on AmazonSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/timaustin)

We are blessed this weekend to have Dr. Sam Huddleston with us. Besides being a great friend to our pastors, Dr. Sam has served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Northern California and Nevada District Assemblies of God since 2004. He also served as the former founding pastor of Lighthouse Covenant Fellowship in Benicia, California, 1993-2004. The church began in the Huddleston's home with six families. Graduating in 1980 from Bethany College in Santa Cruz, CA, Samuel and his wife Linda moved to San Rafael, California, where he attended Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Sensing a call to youth ministry, Sam accepted a position at Church on the Hill in Vallejo, California, where he served from 1981 to 1988 under Pastor Terry Inman. While there, Pastor Inman encouraged Samuel to further his education and he subsequently enrolled at Azusa Pacific University, eventually earning his Masters Degree in Marriage Family and Child Counseling. While incarcerated, Samuel surrendered his life to Christ and learned about God’s unconditional love. His autobiography, Five Years to Life (Perkins Publishing, 2013), has inspired people across America and throughout the world, giving them hope for a new beginning. Samuel has shared his testimony with thousands — including prison inmates — reminding them not only with words but also with his very presence, that God has the power to put broken lives and broken relationships back together again. Before entering the pastorate in Benicia, Samuel was appointed as the Executive Director of a state wide non-profit organization under the auspices of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which matched adult inmates and wards (youth) with outside volunteer visitors. Serving from 1989 to 1991, Samuel Huddleston remains the only former prisoner to ever lead a California Department of Corrections program. Later, Samuel returned to his Alma mater to serve as Dean of Students at Bethany College under Dr. Everett Wilson. Dr. Gordon Greenhalgh has been a good friend for many years. We started Campus Life and Youth Guidance for YFC when we were in our 20s. He's a surfer. I witnessed him surfing with whales in California. He was a high school wrestler and more. Gordon is a licensed psychotherapist, has been in practice over 25 years counseling individuals, couples and families. He has a Master's Degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling and a Ph.D. in Psychology. He talks about the importance of youth workers and volunteers taking care of themselves, both mentally and physically, so you can better care for others. Dr. Gordon is a father and a husband. He's the homerun hitter that I send families to when they have real problems with their adolescents and young adults. I've seen him change the lives of inner-city students in Orlando, FL as a Youth Guidance Director/YFC. Outside he looks like a calm cool individual but inside he is full of fire to help those who are hurting. Get his books and go online to www.AskDrGordon.com questions. He's the real deal.

Talked with Kerry Jamieson, Director of Community and Public Relations, Center for Child Counseling and Randy Scheid, Chief Strategy Officer for Quantum Foundation about a new program at the Center that Quantum is funding. The program, Fighting Aces, is designed to raise awareness about children who've experienced ACEs (Adververse Childhood Experience) how it impacts their health/wellness throughout their lifespan. It also offers screenings for children and then a trauma informed treatment approach. They have the screening test on their website, www.centerforchildcounseling.org and encourage listeners to take it (it's confidential) and for them to get involved by learning more about ACEs and how they can become "buffers" to help. Quantum funds this and many other programs in the community. For more info on them and applying for grant funding, listeners can go to http://www.quantumfnd.org/
Today’s guest is Steven Morrison. Steven is a man obsessed with using higher consciousness to solve problems because it absolutely works. He holds a Master's degree in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling and is a licensed psychotherapist (M.F.T.) in the great state of California. During that multi-year extravaganza of a process, Steven kept asking himself “Who am I?”, “What is this life about?”, and “What the hell am I supposed to be doing with mine?” He started reading a number of New Age, self-help, and personal development books, going to workshops and seminars, listening to audio lectures and before long it seemed clear that they were all pretty much saying the same things. He then reduced what they were saying to a collection he now simply calls The Concepts. Putting those concepts to use in his own life enabled him to experience deep and meaningful changes. So he began to bring the concepts into his work with his clients until his entire psychotherapy practice revolved around those 15 ideas.
