One year ago, Columbia University became ground zero for the student-led Gaza solidarity encampment movement that spread to campuses across the country and around the world. Now, Columbia has become ground zero for the Trump administration's authoritarian assault on higher education, academic freedom, and the right to free speech and free assembly—all under the McCarthyist guise of rooting out “anti-semitism.” From Trump's threats to cancel $400 million in federal grants and contracts with Columbia to the abduction of international students like Mahmoud Khalil by ICE agents, to the university's firing and expulsion of Student Workers of Columbia-United Auto Workers union president Grant Miner, “a tremendous chilling effect” has gripped Columbia's campus community. In this urgent episode of Working People, we speak with: Caitlin Liss, a PhD candidate in history at Columbia University and a member of Student Workers of Columbia-UAW (SWC); and Allie Wong, a PhD student at the Columbia Journalism School and a SWC member who was arrested and beaten by police during the second raid on the Gaza solidarity protests at Columbia on April 30, 2024.Additional links/info:Student Workers of Columbia-UAW Local 2710 websiteApril 17: Day of Action to Defend Higher Ed websiteMahmoud Khalil statement from ICE detention: “My name is Mahmoud Khalil and I am a political prisoner”Grant Miner, The Nation, “Columbia expelled me for my palestine activism, but I won't be silenced”Jonah E. I'll be mentioning the conversion of 19th century Town Houses to hotels and find out where Kylie Minogue stays when she is visiting Glasgow. Down on the waterfront we will visit the Scottish Exhibition Centre to see an arena that looks like a spacecraft and the other one that looks like an Armadillo. We will also be visiting a couple of the 20 art galleries and museums that adorn Glasgow which has some of the most eminent collection of arts and historical antiques in Europe. Oh, and don't forget the musical arts centres where our opera house sits opposite Scotland's centre for bagpipes. Could one say that the sounds are not dissimilar?

Students involved in Trinity College Dublin's Engineering Society were welcomed by staff at EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland's electricity grid, as part of STEPS Engineers Week recently. STEPS Engineers Week, managed by Engineers Ireland, aims to promote engineering education, celebrate innovation, and encourage the future engineering workforce. During the visit, students were given an in-depth look at EirGrid's work and operations with presentations delivered by the Head of Interconnection, John Ging, as well as colleagues across system operations, offshore wind and future networks, who shared their expertise on the technical and operational aspects of Ireland's energy system and how it is evolving to support a sustainable, low carbon future. "It's great to see the interest and curiosity of students when they come into the office. It's essential that engineering students coming from universities understand the opportunities available in the energy sector, as their skills will be so valuable in the future," said Ging. "As EirGrid work towards facilitating that eighty per cent of the electricity on our grid comes from renewable sources, we hope these engagements help inspire the engineers of tomorrow, who will make this happen. We look forward to welcoming more third-level students to the office and our converter stations throughout the year in similar visits." The visit also highlighted the importance of making technical information available to students, particularly those who will soon be stepping into roles where they will shape the future of energy and the environment. Garbhan Power, Chairperson of TCD Engineering Society said, "We had a fantastic day as a society, the enthusiastic and professional way EirGrid staff treated us with was genuinely inspiring and is a testament to the "can do" attitude of the organisation. I hope this visit can be the start of something in generating more interest and enthusiasm amongst students on work in the energy sector generally, and in renewable energy and EirGrid in particular." The visit comes just a week before the final of EirGrid's second annual CleanerGrid Competition, where third-level students from across the country will compete for the chance to win a top prize of €12,000 (€6,000 for the winning student team and €6,000 for the student's third-level institute). For this year's theme asks students to "Present your vision of what the growing energy sector will need to look like in 2050 to have sustainably achieved net-zero emissions". Finalists will present their innovations to industry experts including members of the EirGrid senior management team on Tuesday 25th March 2025. Greg questions Ed about his main job - teaching ‘American Studies' to Thai college students. Effectively, Ed's job and his side gig (the podcast) are opposites of each other, given that he is attempting to explain Thai society and culture to foreigners on the podcast.  Ed begins with America 101 - basic lessons about the U.S. that every Thai person should know, especially before traveling there. First, the U.S. is physically a VERY big country, but also quite diverse. The Northeast is quite different from the Midwest, which is in turn different from the South, which differs from the West Coast, etc. Hence, Ed notes that the U.S. is actually a difficult country to generalize about, and some of his students grapple with the concept. For instance, life in an urban city can be completely different from life in the suburbs or rural area, despite both being in the U.S. Second, the U.S. has a violent crime problem, and Thais should be very careful where and when they go somewhere, especially in cities. While the country overall is ‘safe' in the general sense, that's not true at all times and in all places. And last, health care in the U.S. is VERY expensive, and no one should travel there without health insurance. ‘Nuff said. Greg then asks Ed about cultural lessons, and Ed notes that often American culture is best explained as the reverse of Thai culture. The U.S. is individualistic, while Thailand is group-oriented. The U.S. is legalistic and ‘low context', while Thailand is ‘flexible' about the law and ‘high context.' And of course, Americans are more direct and engaging than Thais, who tend to be ‘shy' and hang back, especially with strangers.  No culture is inherently ‘better' or ‘worse' than any other, but that doesn't mean they are all the same. :) Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.

In Smart University: Student Surveillance in the Digital Age (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2024), Lindsay Weinberg evaluates how this latest era of tech solutions and systems in our schools impacts students' abilities to access opportunities and exercise autonomy on their campuses. Using historical and textual analysis of administrative discourses, university policies, conference proceedings, grant solicitations, news reports, tech industry marketing materials, and product demonstrations, Weinberg argues that these more recent transformations are best understood as part of a longer history of universities supporting the development of technologies that reproduce racial and economic injustice on their campuses and in their communities. Mentioned in this episode is this piece that Dr. Weinberg wrote in Inside Higher Ed:  Lindsay Weinberg is a clinical assistant professor and the Director of the Tech Justice Lab in the John Martinson Honors College at Purdue University. Dr. Michael LaMagna is the Information Literacy Program & Library Services Coordinator and Professor of Library Services at Delaware County Community College. Learn more about your ad choices. #371: 9 University Students Hijack A Japanese Plane to North Korea

There's this fascinating little town called ‘Little Japan.' It's a gated community with cookie-cutter houses, though they boast beautiful chandeliers and heated floors, and all of them have a matching set of priceless portraits hanging on their walls. The residents are nine Japanese families, hence the name, and they have their own private chefs, maids, even chauffeurs in black Mercedes. A small movie theater, a massive sauna house, and a grocery store where they never have to pay. The catch? If they ever want to leave the community ‘gates,' they must ask for permission from the Supreme Leader… The town itself is not even an hour outside of North Korea's capital. The families themselves are neither Japanese nor North Korean royalty, nor are they diplomats or even government officials either. They're a gang of hijackers. Hijackers who stole a plane and flew it into North Korea—and now the distinguished guests of the Kim regime were to become his secret weapon.
