In this episode I continue the discussion on transaction-based costing by looking at the relationship with Value Stream Teams. I start by defining value stream teams - cross-functional groups that work towards delivering value from customer request to service delivery. I explore how they fit into the software development landscape, leveraging principles of lean manufacturing for better efficiency. I recap the transactional cost mindset, comparing it with the traditional CapEx/ OpEx model - highlighting the benefits of a transaction-based approach for improving visibility and accountability for better decision making. I then discuss the importance of breaking down organizational silos - examining the significance of focusing on the end-to-end flow of value in software development, emphasizing how transaction-based costing helps optimize this flow for better financial outcomes. Lastly, I highlight how this approach can enhance agility and speed up time to market. ----- Find this episodes show notes at: https://red-folder.com/podcasts/176 Have an idea for an episode topic, or want to see what is coming up: https://red-folder.com/podcasts/roadmap

It's so interesting to me, how social media platforms and industry groups can facilitate new friendships and enhance networking. We all hear that it is possible, though when you take a step back, how many relationships have you grown this way? It takes deliberate effort and an openness to reach out to others. This is how I met Sejal Amin, the current CTO of Shutterstock. By commenting and contributing to LinkedIn conversations on the importance of value streams for modern software delivery, we followed one another and eventually, agreed to connect. What I didn't know at the time was that Sejal is an influential member of the value stream management consortium (VSMC). What is a Value Stream? A value stream is the sequence of activities necessary to deliver a product, service or experience to a customer, internal or external. Value streams cut across and connect siloed business capabilities. For those in the software design and delivery realm, you may see a natural alignment to the concepts of DevSecOps and the ability to deliver value to the end user. This is how I learned about applying value streams to software; as an umbrella to DevSecOps flow. In October of 2022, the Value Stream Management Consortium held their first conference in Las Vegas. They chose the time and place carefully to dovetail with the yearly DevOps Enterprise Summit. There were nearly 100 folks gathered to discuss the importance and advance the topic and I happened to walk in the door nearly last. I had taken a wrong turn when I walked into Bally's Hotel and Convention area. As I walked into the main conference room, I was greeted by multiple folks I had been chatting with on social platforms and even through an occasional zoom call.A fireball of a woman walked up to me and said, “I finally get to meet you, Trac! I'm a fan girl!” I was surprised and warmed by the welcome. Her name was Sejal. We took our seats to kick start the day's sessions. As the morning unfolded, and the experts shared their topics, I was stunned and excited to find out that Sejal was Sejal Amin, the CTO of Shutterstock who is leading their adoption of generative artificial intelligence. We share a love of technology and a love of building teams. We also share one other attribute: we have lived our entire lives in the states where we were born. I'm Pennsylvaina born and bred. Sejal Amin has lived her entire life in New Jersey. Sejal is first generation US born. Her family immigrated to the US from India during the early 1970s.
Managing work processes across an organization can be a challenge. Shared responsibilities and bottlenecks can cause confusion, stress, and delays. Caterina Palmiotto: Lessons from an Agile Transformation in a Manufacturing Company Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. In this episode, Caterina discusses a large-scale Agile transformation she was involved in at a manufacturing company. The transformation was initiated after a successful pilot with a few software development teams. The company adopted a top-down approach, hiring many Agile coaches and implementing a model that combined the Spotify Model and a big-bang change. Despite its success, the transformation was risky due to its size, and Caterina suggests starting the Agile adoption with a single Value Stream and measuring the impact on the business. In this case, the company's culture was also key in integrating the many different backgrounds and expectations from the different regional offices. The success factors Caterina identified were: team coaching, focus on effective communication, and constant respect for each other. About Caterina Palmiotto Caterina started as a software developer but soon realized that she was passionate about team dynamics and communication, and embraced agility from the moment she saw it. Caterina believes a team can be more than the sum of its parts and that growing the right culture is essential. When people are surrounded by good examples they will be motivated to do their best. So the first step is doing your best to be a good example of the culture you want to nurture. You can link with Caterina Palmiotto on LinkedIn.

Derek Huether is back for this episode and we're focusing on Value Stream Management. Value Stream Mapping is about understanding all the steps from the inception of an idea to putting something valuable in a customer's hands, and using that information to optimize the flow of value through the system. But, within a business, you will have many value streams and we need to understand how best to coordinate those streams to optimize the overall value generated by the company across multiple value streams. If your brain is wired for traditional project management, you could think of this as creating a system that optimizes a portfolio management level view of all the value streams in the org. During the interview, Derek and I explore why Value Stream Management is so important, how it works, the connection to Value Stream Mapping, and how you can get started with it. In between running the Value Stream and ART Identification Workshop and actually launching an ART lies an informal process to determine what people should be involved where. And when that informal process is rushed, it can lead to less than optimal outcomes. At least that's what SPCT Marshall Guillory experienced as he worked with organizations at that point in their SAFe journey. In today's episode, Marshall joins us to discuss the importance of team formation and self-selection.
One of the common denominators among the most successful startups is that they are solving a problem that needs solving. Allstacks is on a mission to disrupt the value stream management category. This category of business looks at how people in an organization work and then map this by using machine learning to understand what may happen in the future. The value stream intelligence market, where the Allstacks platform is focused, helps engineering teams predict and quantify team productivity, thus predicting outcomes. There are 25 million developers globally, which is expected to double in the next 10 years. This makes the market for Allstacks and platforms like it immense. This massive market is very attractive to investors because any company that employs software engineers really needs this problem solved. In this conversation, Carol and Hersh talk about all this plus Hersh's journey from IBM to where he is now and his discovery of the importance of doing work that makes a real impact for him and the people he employs. We look at who the Allstacks ideal client is, which tends to be companies with a pressing need to get their product out the door, company size (250-10K employees), marketing strategies, hiring strategies, culture, and the very low turnover they have experienced. Welcome to episode 46 of the Enterprise Excellence Podcast. It is such a pleasure to have Dr Peter Hines back on the show with us today. Peter rightfully was our first ever guest on the Podcast. Peter has dedicated his career to researching and writing on how organisations do and can achieve sustainable journeys of excellence. Peter has recently been working on what he calls the People Value Stream. Todays episode is focused on this new area of work and I am looking forward to learning more. Let's get into the episode. Peter thank you for joining us again today. Proudly brought to you in association with S A Partners, a world-leading business transformation consultancy. Two Minute Tip It's the same idea that many years ago, Lean developed, which was to pin an order on your back and walk yourself through the ordering system. In the people value stream, it would be to pin a career on your back and walk your way through the system. For instance, pretend you're a new recruit. Walk the stream of being employed and arriving for the first day. See how easy it is and how you are welcomed and see whether the systems are actually in place. Peter supposes this could be taking a moment of truth. So when you come in the door, this happens, and that happens, but does it just work? Or does it not work? So think about the flow. Think about the new employee or graduate coming in. What are they going to face? That will help you to think about the employee journeys.Key Takeaways There were two key takeaways for me from these two episodes: 1. The power of focusing on the people value stream, the employee journey. 2. The foundation of mental and physical wellness. Employees are critical to an organisations success. We focus so heavily on improving the value stream for the products and services we make but often the journey for the employees making them is broken, lacks flow, delivers low value. Peters approach with the people value stream gets an organisation cross functionally working together to make this important journey visible, identify challenges, breaks in flow and potential experience improvement areas. Enhance your employees journey and they will enhance your customers. The second key takeaway for me is the foundation physical and mental wellness plays for an employees journey which is so similar to the importance of quality and safety for an operational excellence journey. By improving the systems and culture to create a foundation of physical and mental safety a platform is created to build and improve the rest of an employees journey.Quotes 12:06min So one is thinking about people coming new into the organisation. And, you know, the sort of Generation X and Zed and you know, millennials, is their expectations from a job are quite different from perhaps people in their sort of 40s or 50s, or whatever. They're expecting much more sort of instant gratification. They're expecting a much more fun environment, they're expecting a sort of blend of work and social.LinksPeter Hines LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/peter-hines-16669bb1People Value Stream Website: www.peoplevaluestream.com Brad is proud to support many Australian businesses. Value streams and Agile
Dr. Eric Dickson, CEO at UMass Memorial Health Care, and John Toussaint, Executive Chairman of the Board at Catalysis. We have invited them both to help us discuss the difference between continuous improvement and new care model development. Both methodologies are important for healthcare systems to utilize in order to remain competitive and relevant in the future. "We need both evolution and revolution. Right now we have great processes for evolution – continuous improvement of a value stream, which in some cases (as John mentioned) allows us to do the wrong thing more and more efficiently over time. So we get twice as good at doing the wrong thing. Sometimes that locks you into keeping it the same way. We need good processes to look for that revolution piece – that new breakthrough. It is something that I am looking forward to learning more about overtime." - Eric Dickson
