Value Stream Mapping Enhances Agile CapabilitiesValue Stream Management (VSM) is a systematic approach to improving the flow of value from a customer's request to the customer's hands. It focuses on optimizing the end-to-end process, from idea to delivery, to accelerate time-to-market, increase throughput, and enhance customer satisfaction. Key aspects of VSM:End-to-end focus:VSM considers the entire process, including all steps and touchpoints, from ideation to delivery. Flow optimization:VSM aims to remove bottlenecks, reduce waste, and improve the flow of work. Data-driven insights:VSM relies on data and analytics to understand the current state of the process, identify areas for improvement, and measure the impact of changes. Continuous improvement:VSM is an iterative process that involves ongoing monitoring, analysis, and optimization. Reduces lead time:By streamlining the process and eliminating waste, VSM can significantly reduce the time it takes to deliver value to customers. Increases throughput:Optimizing the flow of work can lead to higher throughput, meaning more value is delivered in a shorter period. Improves product quality:By identifying and addressing issues early in the process, VSM can help ensure higher product quality. Enhances customer satisfaction:Faster delivery, higher quality, and more reliable products lead to greater customer satisfaction. Enables business agility:VSM helps organizations become more agile and responsive to changes in the market. In essence, VSM is about maximizing the value delivered to customers by optimizing the end-to-end process, from customer request to customer value realizationHow to connect with AgileDad:- [website] https://www.agiledad.com/- [instagram] https://www.instagram.com/agile_coach/- [facebook] https://www.facebook.com/RealAgileDad/- [Linkedin] https://www.linkedin.com/in/leehenson/

In this episode, we discuss mistake-proofing in lean practices, exploring its significance in various industries. The conversation begins with a light-hearted discussion about the "five-timers club" and Mark's "ZERO hat" from the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, which symbolizes the goal of zero harm in healthcare. Karen shares her extensive background in quality improvement and lean management systems, emphasizing the importance of building quality at the source. Drawing on the teachings of Dr. W. Edwards Deming and the Toyota Production System, Karen and Mark discuss the psychological impact of striving for zero harm, debating whether it is an inspiring goal or potentially demotivating. The episode also explores real-world examples of organizations achieving zero harm and the cultural shifts required to reduce errors. Karen introduces the TKMG Academy and its comprehensive courses designed to enhance lean practices, including the new mistake-proofing course co-developed with Mark. Her passion for quality improvement and continuous learning shines through, offering listeners valuable insights into achieving operational excellence. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: Why is quality such a passion for you? Why did you want to add the mistake-proofing course to the TKMG Academy catalog? What are some common barriers to achieving zero harm in healthcare? How do you differentiate between mistakes and errors? How do you handle situations where the work system isn't at fault, but the individual continues to make mistakes? Can you tell us more about the "slow work" movement? What are your thoughts on final inspection versus quality at the source? How do you address the challenge of maintaining standards in training and process design? How do we visualize systems to improve product development? And where are the bounds of that system? Today I'm chatting with Rob O'Brien about process mapping, value stream mapping, and more. Rob is Principal Product Manager at Stride Consulting and has over ten years of product management experience that he brings to this conversation. Rob frames the debate for us by defining the 'socio-technical system' involving people, technology, and processes that all contribute to the overview of how we should see our product development systems. How do we include the engineers, the finance department, and other organizational leaders to ensure we are creating a system that can improve our products and services and ask the right questions that will ultimately improve the way we do things? There's a lot that can go wrong if we make assumptions about which part of our organization needs to be involved in process mapping. Rob shares the value of defining the bounds, asking those 'low-level questions,' and how to structure a two-day conference, say, whereby you are bringing in certain departments at key stages. Value stream mapping to improve product development is a favorite topic of mine and one that Rob provides much insight on. I trust you'll enjoy this conversation."I think the next biggest one (mistake), that actually feeds to that first mistake, is really thinking about and defining the bounds of what the system is in your world. So what do you mean by 'system' - and getting alignment on that?" ~ Rob O'BrienIn This Episode:- What do we mean by 'systems visualization?' - Where do we get it wrong when we build our product development systems?- How do we know if we've involved all the relevant stakeholders 'enough'?- The value of drilling down into some of the 'low-level questions' to ultimately save time- The importance of having clear definitions so you can go deeper on your processes- 'If you see something, say something - why it's important to speak up during the process- Understanding story mapping and other best practice value stream mapping approaches- How do we understand the specificity of what to capture? And more!Connect with Rob O'Brien:- Website - https://www.stridenyc.com/blog/author/rob-obrien- LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-o-brien-82865b25Connect with Debbie Madden:- Website - https://www.stride.build/- LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/debbiemadden1/- LinkedIn Page - https://www.linkedin.com/company/stride-build/

Derek Huether is back for this episode and we're focusing on Value Stream Management. Value Stream Mapping is about understanding all the steps from the inception of an idea to putting something valuable in a customer's hands, and using that information to optimize the flow of value through the system. But, within a business, you will have many value streams and we need to understand how best to coordinate those streams to optimize the overall value generated by the company across multiple value streams. If your brain is wired for traditional project management, you could think of this as creating a system that optimizes a portfolio management level view of all the value streams in the org. During the interview, Derek and I explore why Value Stream Management is so important, how it works, the connection to Value Stream Mapping, and how you can get started with it. The team Elly was working with had a very large number of items in progress (high WIP). This was also a result of the team being under a lot of pressure to deliver. The team was motivated to deliver, but was also feeling down because of the inability to deliver all they wanted, when they wanted. Elly started to help the team by understanding their context, and then trying to understand where the work was being held up. She started learning Value-Stream-Mapping, a technique that helped identify the bottlenecks, something she had learned about in the book The Goal by Goldratt. Through that research work, Elly found out some options to improve the flow of work for that team. Listen in to learn what those were, and what technique she used to help the team! In this segment, we talk about the concept of Shifting Left, and Extreme Programming. Featured Book of the Week: Nonviolent Communication by Rosenberger In Nonviolent Communication by Rosenberger, Elly found a book that helped her as a Scrum Master, but also in other aspects of her life. The book offers a model of communication that tries to focus on resolving conflicts, and helps us become more self-aware of how we communicate with others. In this segment, we also talk about the hand-brain model, and the two thinking/acting systems (System 1 and System 2) that Kahneman describes in the book Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow. How can Angela (the Agile Coach) quickly build healthy relationships with the teams she's supposed to help? What were the steps she followed to help the Breeze App team fight off the competition? Manage This - The Project Management Podcast

How is Agile relevant beyond IT? Alan Zucker explains how agile roots are in the Lean manufacturing movement as he shares about the application of agile practices for non-technology projects. He talks about agile as a mindset, the Gemba Walk, House of Lean, transparency in teams, value stream mapping, and much more. WENDY GROUNDS:  You're listening to Manage This.  My name is Wendy Grounds, and with me in the studio is Bill Yates.  This is the podcast about project management.  We are excited to bring our guest to you today.  This is actually someone we've had before. BILL YATES:  Yes. WENDY GROUNDS:  Alan Zucker is joining us.  He's a certified project management professional.  He's an Agile Foundation certificate holder, a Scrum Master, a Scaled Agilist, as well as a keynote speaker. BILL YATES:  We have a course that we are launching.  This one is called “Agile Beyond IT.”  It's a part of our self-paced training in InSite.  Alan created the “Fundamentals of Agile” course for us, and the feedback was always positive, and sometimes he'd get the comment, “I don't work in technology, so how does this apply to me?”  Well, that's something that he's dealt with a lot in some of the consulting and other training that he's done for organizations. For several years Alan's helped clients use agile principles and practices in diverse non-technology fields, everything from construction to not-for-profits.  These experiences are the basis for this class.  And he pulls some of the concepts from the agile principles and says, “Okay, here's the principle.  How can we apply this beyond IT?”  Very practical, great advice. Alan has got multiple agile certifications from PMI, the Scrum Alliance, Disciplined Agile, and Scaled Agile.  He's created courses for us.  He instructs for us.  He is in the classroom.  In fact, as we wrap up this session today, he's going to begin a four-day PMP prep class for us.  And we're delighted to have him with us. WENDY GROUNDS:  Hi, Alan.  Welcome to Manage This once again.  Thank you for joining us. ALAN ZUCKER:  Hi.  It's great to see you guys again. Agile Beyond IT WENDY GROUNDS:  Now, we've just mentioned that you have completed a course for us, “Agile Beyond IT.”  And we're very excited to publish this one.  It's an excellent course.  Could you give us a little bit of a background for this and why you picked that name for the course? ALAN ZUCKER:  Sure.  So a few years ago I created a “Fundamentals of Agile” course for Velociteach.  And it's been very popular.  But as we were looking at some of the comments that people left, people were saying, “Well, this was a really great course, but it was all about technology, and I'm in a non-technology area.  How can I use agile?”  So we had some conversations, and we put together a course for people that aren't in technology.  And it just so happened that around the same time I was thinking,
