As organizations grow in complexity and there is an increase in the visibility of corporate organization and interconnected processes, Value Streams have taken the center of the stage. Waseem Ahmed shares some key guidelines on how to get started with Value Stream Mapping for IT. He points out the importance of beginning with a strong service design and the need to keep a close eye on the continual improvement of the whole service lifecycle. Waseem Ahmed has a long history of system and service experiences working in different roles and companies. Amongst them, he operated as Virtualization Service Delivery Manager for American Airlines and Vice President of Production Operations Core Technology Infrastructure for Citi. He currently serves as the director of IT Service Management at BECU, a not-for-profit financial cooperative.

How do we visualize systems to improve product development? And where are the bounds of that system? Today I'm chatting with Rob O'Brien about process mapping, value stream mapping, and more. Rob is Principal Product Manager at Stride Consulting and has over ten years of product management experience that he brings to this conversation. Rob frames the debate for us by defining the 'socio-technical system' involving people, technology, and processes that all contribute to the overview of how we should see our product development systems.How do we include the engineers, the finance department, and other organizational leaders to ensure we are creating a system that can improve our products and services and ask the right questions that will ultimately improve the way we do things? There's a lot that can go wrong if we make assumptions about which part of our organization needs to be involved in process mapping. Rob shares the value of defining the bounds, asking those 'low-level questions,' and how to structure a two-day conference, say, whereby you are bringing in certain departments at key stages. Value stream mapping to improve product development is a favorite topic of mine and one that Rob provides much insight on. Value Stream Mapping is about understanding all the steps from the inception of an idea to putting something valuable in a customer's hands, and using that information to optimize the flow of value through the system. But, within a business, you will have many value streams and we need to understand how best to coordinate those streams to optimize the overall value generated by the company across multiple value streams. If your brain is wired for traditional project management, you could think of this as creating a system that optimizes a portfolio management level view of all the value streams in the org. The team Elly was working with had a very large number of items in progress (high WIP). This was also a result of the team being under a lot of pressure to deliver. The team was motivated to deliver, but was also feeling down because of the inability to deliver all they wanted, when they wanted. Elly started to help the team by understanding their context, and then trying to understand where the work was being held up. She started learning Value-Stream-Mapping, a technique that helped identify the bottlenecks, something she had learned about in the book The Goal by Goldratt.
