Do you find it hard to actually apply English language teaching theory to your teaching? Often, research articles can feel distant, like the ideas are for a completely different world because you don't see how they apply to your teaching situation. At the same time, you recognize that academic research in English language teaching is important to know about and understand – for yourself and your students. That's why I've reviewed the book, Teaching English to Second Language Learners in Academic Contexts: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, for you. It's definitely a gold mine if you teach academic English, but it's also worth a read even if you're not. The authors themselves mention that this book can benefit teachers who are: ◼ looking to give new energy to their teaching, ◼ just starting out, and ◼ pre-service teachers. I was first introduced to Kim through her husband's YouTube videos on his Haxman channel. I then followed Kim on her own YouTube channel, and through the world wide web, became pretty endeared to her and her family. I was fortunate enough to have her as a guest on the podcast where we talked about homeschooling, homesteading, and ended up laughing... a lot! This episode was so much fun and I know will be a blessing for you to listen to!Looking to save money on quality, bulk foods? Today, I am joined by the masterminds behind Pennsylvania's Drive-In Super Monster-Rama and the April Ghoul's Drive-In Monster-Rama, both held annually at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, PA, George and Gene! We take a dive into a film that is post Night of the Living Dead, but still has its roots in Voodoo. We tackle the Blaxploitation flick, Sugar Hill, from 1974, starring Marki Bey and Robert Quarry. When nightclub owner Langston refuses to sell out to local mob boss Morgan, he is beaten to death by Morgan's thugs. His grief-stricken fiancee, Diana "Sugar" Hill, vows revenge for his murder and turns to aged voodoo authority Mama Maitresse. Together they conjure up the demonic spirit of Baron Samedi, who agrees to help Sugar. He raises an army of zombies and sets them upon Langston's killers. We've discussed Drive-In Theaters in the past, and while many indoor movie theaters have closed down because of Covid-19, the outdoor Drive-In Theater has not only thrived, but is experiencing a resurgence! This past weekend my wife and I had the good fortune to be able to attend the 2021 April Ghouls Drive-In Monster Rama at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. During the late 19th and early 20th Century, American business experimented with many kinds of relationships between the company and its employees. Ironically, the boldest attempts at improving the lives of workers were often followed by the most bitter labor disputes. Marc Hodak of NYU Stern will discuss several of these experiments, including Pullman, Vandergrift, and Hershey, to illustrate the lessons learned by the would-be reformers, and how they might inform the CSR movement today.
